Did you catch the game last night right here on nbc bay area . A stunning statement from the 49ers. Theyre certainly looking like one of the best, if not the best team in football, after really showing dallas how its done on nbc sunday night football. Many 49er legends attended last night. The two teams at the top of their game started the season, but only one team ended the game looking that way. The 49ers rolled, with George Kittle scoring three touchdowns. The niners took it 4210. The niners have now started 50 for only the third time in franchise history. Consistency is really helpful. It feels like everyone is on a mission, like the mindset is where it needs to be. Everyone is so detailed in what they do, the play calls are great. All ive got to do is go out and do my job. How about this . After the game, 49ers defensive star nick bosa threw his gloves to some lucky young fans in the stands. The niners next sunday head to cleveland to face the browns. Got to celebrate all those wins. A win weatherwise, not too bad today. Meteorologist rob mayeda is in for kari. If you take the celebration outside, in some places you might need an umbrella. Yes, certainly on the north coast. Speaking of walnut creek, weve got clouds, no rain just yet. 60 degrees. Once we pass lunchtime, well see a chance of showers. Cooler afternoon as well, only near 70 today in walnut creek. You can see why. Weve got cloud cover through the day, and approaching lunchtime the showers will be mainly in areas north of San Francisco, then near walnut creek, into the south bay later afternoon and evening. Were likely to see light rain at times. 65 in San Francisco, 67 in oakland. And the sevenday forecast looking relatively mild, as we warm up slightly wednesday and thursday, with more clouds heading into the weekend. The sevenday, saving you money on your airconditioning bills. Now lets save you money with your gas tank. A treat for folks, were all under 5, at least for these three spots. Livermore leads the entire state with 4. 59 at diamond gas and mart on south front road just off 580. Costcos got a shipment of 4. 99 in place. Solano county, sams club at 4. 98 on helen power drive in vacaville. Thats farther north. Were going over toward the east, where folks are coming out of the altamont pass. About the same amount of slowing. No problems. From the top of the screen, vasco does slow near dalton, around the bend, and we approach 580. Its just 21 minutes from marsh creek road to 580 itself. Notice at the top, highway 4 from the antioch bridge over to 242, no problem. Most of that slowing in concord with brake tapping. Back over to you. Thanks, mike. 6 11 this morning. Fighting for a refund after a vacation literally turns into a disaster. So at 6 25 this morning, our Consumer Team is going to help one south bay family struggling to get their money back following the deadly maui firestorm. The situation in israel causing a lot of misinformation online. Well have that. Lets go out to the futures this morning. We are expecting some down arrows, and indeed were getting them. And saying goodbye to self checkout. The reason more and more Grocery Stores are good monday morning. Look at livermore, 57 degrees, cooler changes in the daytime forecast today. Highs near 70, and a chance of some light rain moving forward into the afternoon. This is highway 101, moving north on 101. A smooth drive through san jose. A nice, easy build. Were looking at the bay bridge, where theres a bit of a build. It looks a little differently than you might expect for monday. Good morning. Very happy monday to you. The markets open this morning, despite the Indigenous People columbus day holiday. Obviously you know all about the crisis in israel. Thats driven oil prices up as we worry about a wider war, and in sometimes of crisis money flows into safe investments, one of which is u. S. Government bonds, which brings down interest rates. Pepsicola reports its profits this week. It has a snack division, fritolay. Its going to be interesting if pepsi talks about ozempic, because more ozempic, fewer cheetos. More satellites released this weekend, two satellites, trying to catch up with starlink, which has thousands of internet satellites in orbit. This is another launch from starlink over the weekend. These happen so routinely, we rarely report on them that much. Wall street thinking about israel, but also that blockbuster jobs report friday. The Labor Department absolutely floored economists, reporting more than double the new jobs expected. 336,000. Economists looking for 170,000. If you poll americans, a vast majority will tell you the economy is weakening. If you look at the economic numbers, thats just not the case. Employment is up, inflation is down. A lot of warnings this morning about misinformation online, particularly on the site we used to call twitter. Experts warning socalled verified accounts are spreading absolutely wrong, sometimes fake news about the situation in the middle east. Over the weekend, elon musk went on twitter to suggest two accounts to follow for more information about the war, and one of them has a history of posting antisemitic content. Meeting here with musk and is raily Prime Minister netanyahu last month. Netanyahu asked musk to roll back antisemitism in twitter. Musk has since posted to x asking users to please stick as close to the truth as possible, which i would say just tell the truth. But close to the truth is maybe the best you can hope. Interesting. Thanks, scott. So selfcheckout maybe in some cases may be easier, but there are signs some retail chains may be ready to reconsider. New Research Shows selfcheckouts are causing stores more problems, increased theft and technical issues. Costco is already making changes to selfcheckout, asking employees to check membership cards in those lines to halt disallowed card sharing. Walmarts in new mexico are getting rid of selfcheckout altogether. Most shoppers agree selfcheckout versus human checkout depends on the situation. If you couldnt use them anymore . I would just find it annoying if the lines were too long. So you only care about efficiency . I only care about speed. That data compiled by the National Retail federation indicates a majority of money lost comes from selfcheckout and employee theft. This next story is not exactly what i thought it would be when i first saw it. Trending, its october, but in portlands oregon zoo its crocktober. The zoo getting the animals into the holiday spirit. Over the weekend, zookeepers treated one of their crocodiles to a pumpkin. In true crocodile fashion, it hunted and attacked the orange gourd before devouring it. Rough. Just shows how strong they are. The pumpkins . I thought it was going to crush him [ laughter ] maybe it will start feeling like fall weatherwise. Temperatures not in the 90s anymore, were going to see 60s and 70s. Our pumpkins are going to cook on the porch. Theyll be a little refrigerated. Drizzle and low clouds. Drizzle in San Francisco, 58 degrees. Walnut creek and livermore, were seeing numbers in the upper 50s there, too. Theres a live look at dublin and pleasanton. 57 degrees. San jose, also some cloudy skies to start, 60. The radar and satellite, weve got clouds over the bay area, but the rain producing showers, were talking more than just drizzle coming down now around the Mendocino County coast. That is the line well be watching moving south as we approach lunchtime. Notice, morning through midday, areas south of San Francisco not really seeing a whole lot. Most of the showers up in the north bay, then by the afternoon and towards the evening commute, highway 17 or along the coast, youll see light rain at times, and some Cool Temperatures. And notice the progression of the rain. Who has the most . Its the coastline here, marin county, northwestern Sonoma County. Not much at all, we expect, around san jose or the trivalley. 71 degrees in san jose, we should see mid60s San Francisco, upper 60s and low 70s inland around the trivalley. One more chance for showers showing up right around tomorrow afternoon, then some clearing skies, the warmest days of the week will be wednesday and thursday. Then eyes on the skies for the weekend. Youre going to hear a lot about this this week, the annual Solar Eclipse peaking at 9 00 a. M. On saturday. Here is the issue. We could see clouds around the bay area. Right now tracking clearer skies just to the south. As we move forward, out of shower chances by tuesday. Well see a few more 80s for the second half of the week, watching clouds heading into the weekend. Another check of the bay bridge commute with mike. No 80s near. Things are moving pretty smoothly. Were at speed for the most part, mild backup, despite the metering lights being activated about 5 40. The earlier incident cleared, good recovery. A smoother build, nothing dramatic. Its lighter than we normally expect at 6 21. A build here richmond toward san rafael, across west 580. Highway 37 holding pretty steady out of vallejo. Concord Holding Steady highway 4. 242 shows blips. We have more build coming through contra costa county. Walnut creek, 24 over toward the caldecott tunnel, and 680 through danville, san ramon toward the interchange, still operates smoothly. The build for 880 through hayward, nothing dramatic. Thanks, mike. Next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. They book a beach resort, then they end up in an evacuation shelter. How, and why arent they getting their money back . Nbc bay area responds to a south bay family fighting a travel agent. Consumer investigator chris chmura found a lesson for everyone. Good morning. Long story short, these viewers were visiting maui recently, when the firestorm swept through. They wanted to fly home immediately, but hit a surprise roadblock, all because they booked their trip with a travel agency. When we were officially evacuated and were, like, okay, lets just go home, i called united and i said, can you change our flight, like as soon as you can. And they said, were sorry, we cant touch this flight because it was booked through an agency. United confirmed that restriction for us. They hit a second roadblock, their travel agent was closed for the day, so the family wound up spending a night in an evacuation shelter. Coming up tonight at 11 00, well dive deeper into vacation packages. There are pros, there are cons, and questions you might want to ask if youre not booking a trip directly with a hotel or airline in case your trip goes sideways. Nate contacted us online. Leaders now ordering a full siege of gaza, after the weekend terror attacks by hamas. And that war in israel and gaza unfolding thousands of miles away, but it is hitting very close to home for bay area communities. Ahead, well tell you how both sides to the conflict are reacting here, a conflict thats breaking right now at 6 30, israel escalates strikes in gaza, with a number of confirmed dead on both sides surging past 1,000. And bay area demonstrators on both sides making their voices heard. Were live this morning with reaction here to the violence overseas. As soon as today, workers at Walgreens Stores may walk off the job. If you have a prescription to pick up, take note. The labor conflict that may make this a week of disruptions for shoppers. This is today in the bay. Good morning to you. Thanks for joining us. Im laura garcia. Im marcus washington. Its a busy morning here. We want to get you started with a live look this morning at Half Moon Bay. This is where the annual pumpkin weighoff will be. Our bob redell, who is there right now live is going to have more on them celebrating 50 years of those massive pumpkins. They have certainly grown. Our forecast is changing as well. Rob mayeda is in for kari this morning. Could the rain get in the way for the weighoff . May have some drizzle for the morning. Later today well see the chances of rain dropping out of the north bay and moving south as we head toward the afternoon. Big impact on temperatures today. Were only talking highs in the 60s and 70s as we switch to the satellite radar view. You can see the rain around Mendocino County now, just starting to enter northwestern Sonoma County. As we track this hourbyhour, notice how most of the chances for seeing more than just drizzle is going to be north of San Francisco through about lunchtime, and then in the afternoon and evening a few spotty showers pushing south. So Half Moon Bay today, speaking of that, only 62 today. 65 in San Francisco, 71 in san jose, and it looks like a mild week ahead, a few more showers tomorrow, then trending warmer as we approach wednesday and thursday. Back to you. Thank you very much. 6 31 right now. This is breaking news, a live look right now in gaza city. Its become very active within the last few moments. Israel continues its allout air assault. This morning at least 1,200 deaths are now confirmed on both sides of what is now the war between israel and gaza. Israeli Ground Troops have yet to enter gaza, but it seems to be an inevitability, with israeli tanks now amassing at the border, at the same time Israeli Forces have yet to stabilize the situation within israels borders, following a largescale hamas Terror Strike over the weekend. Were just learning nine americans are now listed among the dead in israel. U. S. Leaders still expecting that number to climb. Now, the identities of those victims have not yet been made public. The u. S. Military already responding as well, with ships and aircraft now moving closer to israel, as a show of support. Military sources telling nbc its assist will not likely be fully in place for several days. Right now plans are on the table to possibly assist in the evacuation of americans from israel if needed. Sentiment over the war in the middle east already front and center right here in the bay area. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab is live in San Francisco. I know over the weekend both sides gathering. Reporter that is correct, marcus and laura. In different ways, though. There was a propalestinian protest at the israeli consulate yesterday in San Francisco, there was also a vigil at a south bay synagogue, also taking place last night. Now, at both, people who support israel or those who support the propalestinian plight, they both were sharing that they share concern and worry over their loved ones who are caught in the middle of this violence. Propalestinian demonstrators marched through the financial district yesterday in protest. They made it to the israeli consulate, over what they call israels settlement in the west bank and occupation of the gaza strip. Protesters say the recent attacks by hamas are retaliation for conditions in gaza, and increased military assaults on palestinians. Now, those protesters were met by a Smaller Group of israel supporters who denounced the attacks by the terrorist group hamas. There were heightened exchanges between the two sides. At one point Water Bottles and eggs were reportedly thrown, but sfpd kept the two sides separated and weve not learned of injuries from the altercations there. This man, gaza native, says he has many friends and family members in gaza. At this point he does not know how they are doing after israels counterattacks. The same fear echoed in the south bay at this vigil, as more than 100 people tried to find comfort through song and prayer. Dozens attended a vigil there to show support for the people of israel. The Deputy Council general of israel to the Pacific Northwest con determined the hamas attacks, saying the terrorists have been brutal towards families, the elderly and infants. He, too, has been overcome with worry. He says his father and other relatives in israel are now in hiding, and he is scared what will happen if they are found by terrorists. Many of them have been in safe rooms for many long hours. We are communicating with them. My grandmother is 101. My father is there, i have cousins who live not far, so i am stressed, cannot sleep. Its hard to eat, hard to focus on anything. Reporter it is really a heartbreaking commonality that is shared by both sides here. Its the possibility of human lives being lost in the aftermath of this violence, which we continue to see is claiming lives by the hour. Back to you. I was just telling marcus, i have a friend who returned from israel on monday and her daughter and grandchild are still there. Scary. Exactly. Thank you for the very latest. This happened nearly one year ago in brentwood city when investigators say two cars were driving at high speeds down el camino real, and cameras show the car driven by an unidentified juvenile plowing into another car, killing a mother and father. Their 7yearold twin daughters sitting in the back seat survived. The juvenile defendant is in court today for a transfer hearing. Now, the other defendant, a 24yearold, kyle harrison, has already entered a not guilty plea. New this morning, pharmacy workers at some Walgreens Stores are vowing to walk out this week. An organizer tells cnn pharmacists and other staffers are upset over poor working conditions and the struggle to keep up with increasing responsibilities. The company did issue a statement saying it acknowledges worker concerns, but its still not clear which walgreens locations will be affected by the walkout. Its also possible the impact at some stores may be felt for the next three days. Well, maybe tonight is someones lucky night, because 1. 5 billion is on the line in tonights powerball drawing. In saturday nights drawing someone in San Francisco did pick all five numbers, not including the powerball. That was from market and post street. That ticket worth 1. 3 million. Not too bad. Go ahead, sorry. No, no, no. If you want to push your luck, tonights drawing is at 8 00. I think you might have a good chance. Northern california has been faring very well. San francisco sold one, bell grove did and vacaville. At least you get 1. 2 or something. Maybe well hit the big one. If you want to see a little bit of light rain in your forecast, odds are a little better than winning. Very true. Thats a safer bet. As you head outside, in San Francisco weve got drizzle ongoing and youre starting to see a little of that across the golden gate bridge. A little misty skies there around the golden gate bridge. You can see it from the headlights. Here is a look at more drizzle in todays forecast, odds looking good for that north of San Francisco through lunchtime, and then a few showers south, not as much as the north bay is going to see around the peninsula and south bay toward the evening. Highs 60s from San Francisco to oakland, 71 in san jose, and a mild looking forecast, after the shower chances clear out after tomorrow evening, we should see numbers climbing closer to 80 degrees approaching thursday. For a check of the morning commute, here is mike. Were going to compare toll plazas. We have the bay bridge toll plaza. I like this one better right now. Look how light the traffic is. Even though the metering lights are on. To the north, richmond to san rafael, the buildup off of the eastshore freeway, things are fine. Then as you approach the toll plaza and head across the span, its been consistently slow. Its not bad. Look how great the Richmond Drive is down the eastshore freeway. Lighter traffic right now around the bay. Weve talked about this being a bank holiday for many, so that could be a factor. There will be a concert at the coliseum. Over to you. Coming up, washingtons reaction to the attack on israel. And honoring a culinary giant. Coming up, how the bay area is remembering celebrity chef michael chiarella. Im bob redell, here for the 50th annual good morning to you. San jose, cloudy skies, 60 degrees right now. We should see temperatures approaching the low 70s today and a chance of light rain showers by midafternoon and evening. Rob, we have most of the people driving across the san mateo bridge, one person or one car, at least, stuck in the service lane. Fortunately that lane is there, keeping the rest of traffic moving smoothly. We see if thats having any impact on the approach coming out of the hayward area. It is 6 43 right now. The white house in Constant Contact this morning with the israeli government. Scott mcgrew, President Biden is promising support to israel, whatever it needs. The exact line was all appropriate means of support. America will not get involved in the shooting, but we do supply the f16s, the battle tanks and Financial Support. Here is the president over the weekend. I personally am going to remain in close contact with Prime Minister netanyahu, as this situation continues to develop. Let there be no mistake, the United States stands with the state of israel. [ speaking in a nonenglish language ] now, if you dont speak hebrew, you heard biden several times. Netanyahu praising biden and the United States for its support. Most of congress stepped up in front of microphones to say they support israel and will help in any way, but congress cannot take action. There is no speaker of the house. Congress cannot do anything until it has one. That stoked more anger at matt gaetz, the florida congressman who initiated the dismissal of Kevin Mccarthy from the speakers chair. There is a world crisis, crises, and the american legislative branch is in disarray. Texas republican mike mccall, head of the Foreign Affairs committee in the house, asking, what kind of message are we sending our adversaries, when we cannot govern, when were dysfunctional, when doe dont even have a speaker of the house . The other thing to match, those who say we must watch israel, our democratic ally, fighting invasion, but who dont support ukraine, our democratic ally, fighting invasion . Now, that became an issue over the weekend on the campaign trail as former Vice President mike pence pointed out, many running for nomination are doing just that. Ron desantis saying that it was a territorial dispute was wrong. When Vivek Ramaswamy said we had no National Interest in ukraine, he questioned whether they would use American Military force to defend israel just a few short weeks ago. Now we wake up and irans agents are gauging an unprecedented attack on israel. And of course donald trump saying that our support in ukraine is unsustainable, the criticisms hes levelled at Prime Minister netanyahu. To me, it all serves to embolden the enemies of israel, the enemies of freedom. There is talk on capitol hill of writing a giant funding bill for ukraine to the tune of 100 billion, enough to fund ukrainians for the next year and, frankly, shock the russians. Republican senator Lindsey Graham leading the way on that. Well certainly see what happens. Thank you, scott. 6 46 right now. Bay area food lovers are mourning the death of celebrity chef Michael Chiarello who died wine country over the weekend from an allergic reaction. He may recognize him from the food network where he had a show and competed on the iron chef. He was born just north of chico, but spent most of his career in napa. He became chef of the year from food wine magazine in 1985. His family released a statement saying his legacy will live on in his food. Relatives say he was being treated for an allergic reaction over the weekend in napa, and he died from anaphylactic shock. The today show will have more on his life and legacy coming up at 7 00 right after today in the bay. Happening today, a return of an annual fall tradition, that competition for the worlds heaviest pumpkin. Today in the bays bob redell is live in Half Moon Bay for this years Great Pumpkin weighoff. Youve been going for almost a quarter of a century out there. This event is a big milestone. Reporter it is. Ive been coming here on and off since 2000, not every year, but a number of years. This is the 50th annual Half Moon Bay pumpkin weighoff. The current world record is 2,703 pound, the north american record was set by this man, from minnesota, who set the record last year with his win at Half Moon Bay. Good morning to you. Good morning. This is your entry for this year . Yes. 2,560 last year. Whats this taping at . This one tapes around 2,400. But when they get to be this size, they can go quite a bit heavy or small. Is it conceivable . 2,700, probably not conceivable . Very conceivable. It is . Very conceivable. Are you sandbagging . I dont know. Its one of those things where, it would be nothing to put 300 or 400 pounds on this. The sound it produces maybe has some indication. Its a brick. Yeah, its solid. Do you have a technique thats different than the other growers or is it you live in minnesota . I do a lot of things different, i throw a lot of water and fertilizer at it, i bury a lot of vines. Ive got a huge plant that supports this. This thing is over 2,000 square feet for a plant. Wow. And when did you cut it . Yesterday morning. People dont know, once you cut it, it starts losing water weight, and you dont want that, obviously. Thats when we rallied here. Youve looked at your competition. Yeah. The other pumpkins we showed earlier. What do you think . So the other big one is from last years team. Nick and ron. If they win, more power to them. I love the camaraderie. Good luck to you. Im assuming your weighin is probably not going to happen until 11 00 or noon. Thats the stage up there where the scale is at, and i think once the sun comes up, theyll start weighing the small ones. Perspective, when this first started in 74, the winning pumpkin was like 130 pounds. When i first came out in 2000, the winning pumpkin was like high 900s. I was here when they crossed over 1,000, which was a milestone. Theyve since crossed a ton. 2,703 is the world record, 2,560 the north american record from that man we just spoke with. Whats in that fertilizer . [ laughter ] pumpkin pie all around this holiday season. The seeds are whats golden. Very cool. Were in our own Pumpkin Patch here.
