And today if you read the new york law journal, they basically say they have no case against trump. But im here, stuck here, and i cant campaign i would rather be right now in iowa id rather be in new hampshire, South Carolina, or ohio, or a lot of other places, but im stuck here seth he sounds like every single married couple during lockdown id rather be in iowa, new hampshire, South Carolina or ohio right here. But im stuck here so, let me just sit here and drink this entire bottle of merlot while i watch tiger king for the third time. The interim speaker, a guy named patrick mchenry, a mccarthy ally, gavelled the house into recess, and as you can see, he was super pissed about it. The chair declares the house of recess subject to the call of the chair. [ laughter ] seth you do not expect that energy from a bow tie guy. [ laughter ] its like a dad trying to get the last piece of ikea furniture to fit goddamn it the wont fit into the so they adjourned the house and the reason they did that apparently was the tensions were so high over the vote to oust mccarthy, they were genuinely afraid there would be physical fighting if they didnt get the hell out of there. Do you agree with congressman mchenrys decision, hes the temporary speaker of the speaker pro tem to put a pause on the week to let tensions settle . Jake, ill be really candid i think if we had stayed together in the meeting last night, i think that you would have seen fists thrown and im not being dramatic when i say that there is a lot of raw emotions right now i think it was best to let folks go back home, decompress a little bit, and then come back together seth a week, only a week if someone at work did this in the middle of a meeting, id say, i think we feed had to take five [ laughter ] months ill see you guys in march [ laughter ] remember, this is the same gop caucus that already had a near fistfight on the floor of the house the first time they had to pick a speaker back in january you may recall that it took 15 votes the last time to elect mccarthy with the same group of hard liners holding out and demanding concessions. And as it dragged on, things got so bad, members of congress were lunging at each other, including one that had to be held back by his face its one thing to be held back by your arms or shoulders, but your face. [ laughter ] thats not how you hold back a congressman. Thats how you grab a cat thats about to barf on a white rug [ laughter ] i really doubt a week is enough time for everyone to chill out because they seemed really mad they same guy you just saw there garret graves was on the house floor tuesday yelling about the fact that his colleague matt gaetz, who instigated the push to bring down mccarthy was fundraising off the whole thing. I keep wondering what is going on are we redefining what conservative is . Whats going on in this country today . Whats going on in this body and all of a sudden, my phone keeps sending Text Messages. [ light laughter ] Text Messages saying, hey, give me money oh, look at that oh, look, give me money. I filed the motion to vacate. Using official actions, official actions, to raise money. Its disgusting. Its whats disgusting about washington seth even worse, during his speech, he got this text message. [ laughter ] and graves isnt the only one upset, throwing a minitantrum over the gop megatantrum in fact, the gop infighting has gotten so intense and so impersonal that republicans are starting to make salacious allegations about each other on television for example, heres a gop senator named Markwayne Mullin talking about matt gaetzs alleged gross behavior on cnn. Youve got to think about this guy. This is the guy that the media didnt give the time of day to after he was accused of sleeping with an underaged girl theres a reason why no one in the conference came and defended him because we had all seen the videos he was showing on the house floor that all of us had walked away of the girls that he had slept with he bragged about how he would crush e. D. Medicine and chase it with Energy Drinks so he could go all night seth not only does matt gaetz definitely look like the spokesman for an e. D. Medicineinfused energy drink, his name even has a z that you know is on the can [ laughter ] so he took e. D. Meds and chased it with an energy drink. That sounds like something Rudy Giuliani would do by accident boss, these tick tacks dont taste very minty uhoh. Everyone give me three inches of space. [ laughter ] but heres the especially infuriating thing. When this small band of gop hardliners voted to oust mccarthy, mccarthy could have, if he really wanted to keep his job, reached out to democrats to try to win their support you know, the same way he made concessions to the hardliners in his own caucus to get the job in the first place. He didnt do that. He dissed democrats, he told them to f off. So democrats voted against mccarthy for extremely obvious reasons and yet republicans have the gau to blame democrats for not voting for mccarthy and bailing them out i think today was a political decision by the democrats. Democrats just removed the republican speaker democrats basically turned on republicans and ousted Kevin Mccarthy every one of the democrats voted against mccarthy you had eight republicans that came together yesterday with 208 democrats, so effectively, this was a democrat eviction of Speaker Mccarthy seth are you out of your [ bleep minds . Democrats are in the minority. You constantly [ bleep ] on them, most of you claim they stole the election, but now you want them to bail you out while you accuse each other of downing viagra like pez and threaten to beat the [ bleep ] out of each other . [ light laughter ] heres a thought exercise. Lets imagine a world where the shoe was on the other foot and eight democrats were threatening to oust nancy pelosi you think republicans would come galloping in to vote for her and keep her as speaker for the good of the country in order to think that, youd have to be high on e. D. Meds and red bull and ready to bang harder than this guy [ bang ] [ laughter ] and, as if the gop conference couldnt become any more of a cluster [ bleep ], some republicans are floating the possibility of making trump the speaker since technically, it doesnt have to be a member of congress and when he was asked about it this week, he just didnt dismiss it out of hand a lot of people have been calling me about speaker all i can say is well do whatevers best for the country and for the Republican Party would you take the job . We have some great people we have some great, great people would you take the job . A lot of people have asked me about it but im leading by, like, 50 points for president. My focus is totally on that. If i can help them during the process, i would do it seth yes, tensions are high and republicans are near fisticuffs, so naturally, the person to calm things down is donald trump thats like trying to sooth a wild stallion with e. D. Medicine [ laughter ] seth the Republican Party is such a mess. Theyre asking for help from a guy whos in court for fraud because no one else is willing to help them out the gop is like a guy whos so desperate for a ride to the airport, he calls a friend whos under house arrest yeah, sure, i can give you a ride, but when my ankle bracelet goes off, youve got to run. [ laughter ] and now, its being reported that trump is planning to fly to d. C. Next week for the speaker election to help figure things out, which i am sure will go smoothly now to some breaking news we just got this donald trump may be about to weigh right into the middle of the fight over the next speaker of the house let me tell you a little bit about what we know this is being considered by trump. He has not been back to the capitol since before january 6th, but hes thinking about coming apparently maybe he thinks that he can somehow help unify the party at this time seth is it really a smart idea to go back to the capitol after what trump did on january 6th . I mean, im no legal expert, but if hed been indicted, im not sure youre supposed to go back to the scene of the crime. Hes like the guy that gets busted on to catch a predator, then goes to the same house a second time. Whoa, chris hanson again. What are the odds, man . What do you have in the bag . Same thing as last time mikes hard lemonade and twizzlers. [ laughter ] but apparently, trump might not just be going back to help he might be going to take the job himself. Political reporters state that trump is open to pitching himself as a speaker candidate according to a republican familiar with internal discussions. You know what, good. Let trump have a job that sucks where half the people in the room hate his guts and he cant do [ bleep ] hell be miserable by day two. Its all boring procedure and filing legislation and saying mindnumbing [ bleep ] like the gentleman from South Carolina is recognized he would hate it so much, hell actually want to go to prison. You guys celebrated your 11th anniversary. Congratulations. 11th anniverasy and congratulations to you seth thank you very much what did you guys do for the big 11 . Got rained out. Seth you got rained out. [ light laughter ] was it this it was this past friday seth oh, yeah. Thats a terrible day. [ laughter ] thats literally the skies sending an omen. That you should just let your ambition be dead seth yep [ light laughter ] and so, we did. We did we just kind of like repajamaed. Seth oh, thats nice i think when you repajama with someone, that means youve chosen the right mate. You know, i had a moment when i was curled up on his chest and we were watching, like, hour three of abbott elementary, and i was like, im so happy seth there you go. [ laughter ] this is the right guy for me. And i did have that thought. What did you guys do seth we it was september 1st. And we had a lovely dinner party where we all it was five couples and we all went around and talked about how we met, the day we met and unfortunately, the last person, the last guy who told the story made was way more romantic than the first four guys had been oh, no. Seth in a way that we all were like, can we go again . [ laughter ] actually, im going to change my answer. Seth i would love to change it i didnt realize we were allowed to talk like that. You and i met just for the first time just before he and i met, or got together seth oh, really . Because yeah, in october 2008, i hosted saturday night live for the first time seth yeah, i remember it well and then i went out to i remember it very well. It was one of the most exciting weeks of my life it still is. And then and then, i went out to l. A. To work on a movie, and thats when adam and i got closer and then, it was the north american premiere of rachel getting married, the Jonathan Demme film. Seth there you go. Jonathan demme, the great director and that month in my life was just crazy seth thats so fantastic the other thing i remember, the killers were the musical guest yes seth and that was a and that show also, i should note, was right after the last writers strike. That was oh, my gosh, i forgot about that part. Seth and so, we were so happy to be back at snl, and you were such an exceptional host and so, that was really special. It was just a it was just a banger of a show i remember start to finish but my parents were there and the killers were the musical guest. And my parents i introduced my parents to the killers, who were really nice as they walked away, my mom said really loud, and they definitely heard, i dont know why they call them the killers. They couldnt be nicer. [ laughter ] i was like, well, did you think they were murderers . [ laughter ] so, my mom came to one of my my little brother did standup for a while. Hes really funny. And my mom and dad went to one of his shows and one of the comics before him explained tinder to the audience and then in the pause that followed, because most people knew what tinder was but my mother didnt. You just hear my moms voice ring out, oh, thats awful [ laughter ] seth thats what you want to hear on stage as a comic so, this film this is a beautiful independent film you obviously, theres a sagaftra strike this is a film with a waiver that is given to some of the independent films that are not made under sort of the auspices of the struck companies. Is it nice to be able to come out and talk about sort of one of these smaller films that sometimes dont get the same amount of attention . Yeah, yeah. Its its amazing i mean, for a lot of reasons one, Rebecca Miller is our writer and our director. And i think shes been working on this project for close to a decade seth thats amazing. Its amazing. And she is the most brilliant, talented person. Shes not just a director and a writer, but shes also an artist shes a painter. And this is the the movie, the screenplay, is based on a short story that she wrote and then, adapted herself and transformed. Its all set in the world of opera but its also set in the world of tugboats. Seth thats which, i know, weve all seen that movie a million times seth thats such a bummer because i had that idea and now im like did you [ laughter ] oh no. Seth im like, do it. Do it before someone beats you to it. And you know, its that thing where i love going to i all kinds of movies. You know, im not just seth sure, same. But when i think that were at our best as an industry, and when i think were at our best like as an audience is when we have different options and im just really proud to be, i dont know, part of an independent offering thats totally original, thats a little bit like a french movie but without subtitles and in english. Seth thats very nice. [ laughter ] every time i watch a french movie, im like, couldnt you have done it couldnt you have made it easier for me . For me. For me seth now, i cant even look at my phone during this movie. How rude. Seth do you and you auditioned for Rebecca Miller years ago. I was a literal teenager. Seth wow and i auditioned for her a week before i met you. No, i auditioned seth i remember. You were always like, look, im so excited i just auditioned for rebecca miler. I was 19 years old, and she was making an incredible movie called the ballad of jack and rose. And i was going to vasser at the time, and i was taking a romantic poetry course and i remember going into the audition and you know how it is youre like one fish in a sea seth yes in an ocean of actresses. And i didnt know if i was going to get the part, but i just wanted to let her know what the screenplay had meant to me, because i really love her writing. And i just handed her a poem that reminded me of the screenplay that shed written. And so, when i met her, she was actually my last meeting before the pandemic kicked in seth oh, wow and i walked in, she goes, its really nice to meet you and i said, well, technically weve met. And i reminded her she didnt remember me hopefully my acting has improved since then but she did remember the poem. Seth oh, thats very sweet to have a poem remembered. Shes like, in all my years, no one had the nerve to hand me a poem. The nerve or the nerd [ laughter ] seth its a little i think its a combo of both when you give someone a poem. A nervy nerd. That seems like it seth youre also producer on this film. I am. Seth and im wondering, like, how, you know again, youre this wonderful actor and then you also have to bring that in and this is what i also love this is such a great new york cast, marisa tomei and Peter Dinklage this is a real east coast posse right here and do you ever as a producer go, hey, maybe a little bit more like this . Or do you what do you mean . Seth like do you ever give your actors, hey, i just want to remind you that im also you know oh, yeah. Seth okay, good. I have to [ laughter ] seth youve got to, right . You care about the product your names out there. Well, i just dont know that its been a complete experience unless ive crushed the spirit of the person im with thats just kind of [ laughter ] i am kidding i promise. [ laughter ] seth you should give all your notes from here on out via poem and just be like, i have something to say about your acting but i would like to read you this poem. Okay. And she takes him back to her tug boat and she reveals to him while disrobing that she is a sex and love addict. Seth oh, wow yes seth never tell your spouse to take a walk [ laughter ] you never know what might happen well, just when you feel really sorry for my character because she is successful in seducing him, you realize that i am actually in a secret relationship with god. Seth oh, well there you go so what i love about indy movies [ laughter ] did you enjoy playing a therapist . I did i did enjoy playing a therapist. I was really nervous about, like, you know, just getting it right and making sure it can be quite serious. But, yeah. Yeah, it felt like i could put a lot of things i learned to use seth yeah, that would be my fear if i ever played a therapist is that one of mine would go, is that me . [ light laughter ] you had a really a cool thing which is, again, we mentioned that youre a producer one of the things you have to do is reach out, try to find people to help you with your movie. Seth thats really incredible i know. Seth the day you find out that hes gonna do it, it just must be what a celebration. I mean it was kind of one of those moments that was so cool, you, like, expect everything to explode. But instead it goes quiet. You know what i mean like, its so impossible to imagine. Hes yeah hes so mythic in his way. Seth yes, and very sage. When you actually talk to him, he seems to have a very deep wisdom that not a lot of people have oh, my gosh i couldnt, i couldnt talk to him. [ light laughter ] i couldnt possibly do it. Seth yeah the first time i met him, he did music my first year on snl. And i just had to do that thing which is i had to just i had to say a thing to him that hes heard a hundred times. Just walk over and say, hey, i just wanna say and he was like, cool, how is the show going to be this week . And i just like, aah, and walked away. [ laughter ] i was like, well im not ready to have like a back and forth here this isnt conversation. This is me unburdening and running away as fast as i can. I just also love the way you so casually just said yeah, Bruce Springsteen was the musical guest the first week that i was on snl. Like you just dropped that so casually do you ever hear yourself . Seth it was my Second Season he was the first, yeah, yeah, yeah okay, got it, got it, got it. Seth i dont remember all the musical guests but i remember that and i remember the killers because theyre still on the lam [ laughter ] you had time on. I know you love broadway you are a theater kid true and true its true, its true. Seth have you managed to see stuff during this down time . Oh, i saw a few months ago now, but i saw my wonderful friend jessica chastain, like, levitate on stage in a dolls house. Did anybody here get to see it [ cheers and applause its like nothing ive ever seen she was she was everything. And then its so cool that david i mean, for so many reasons, its so cool that david byrne is here. But i cant wait to see here lies love. I got to see it at the public. During the first run of it and so im so excited to go see it just as soon as were done. Thank you seth im so happy youre here [ cheers and applause im glad to be here seth and i know every time youre here and its the way you get everywhere in new york city, you biked here today yeah. Its locked outside. Seth so you, david byrne, bike to 30 rock and then you just locked it outside yeah, yeah, yeah. [ light laughter ] seth how recognizable are you to people as david byrne on a bike most of the time, no, but somehow they know im coming to do this show seth yes, interesting. You wear a helmet, obviously you play it safe most of the time, yeah. Seth okay. Most of the time yeah, most. Seth have you is the biking a new thing or have you always been a new york city biker . Ive been doing it for a long time used to live on the Lower East Side back in the a long time ago. Cabs there were hardly any cabs down there. Seth got you hardly any cabs in soho it was like this weird, dangerous whatever seth so it was out of necessity that you were a biker. Yeah, it became really practical. Seth its become safer i think new york city has gotten a little bit better for bikers, but not entirely safe. Not entirely. I wouldnt go to a friend and say whos never done it and say, go ahead, just jump in there seth cause i know when you went on tour, you and your cast would bike in other cities there must be some American Cities where you go, oh, one day, wouldnt it be great if new york was like this . Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah austin has amazingly has incredible bike lanes. Portland, of course. Portlandia, lots of bike lanes [ light laughter ] seth they do so, congratulations, your second broadway show. Yes well, yes, it is seth as a guy that used to bike around the Lower East Side, did you ever think you would have two broadway shows . Yeah. [ light laughter ] seth so this is based on an album you did with fatboy slim its about Imelda Marcos, the wife of the former dictator in the philippines. Exactly seth and what made you first think this would be a good topic for music . [ light laughter ] just cried out to me, yes id been to way back in the day, id been to some discos, but i usually just went to see if there was a musical act performing and the acts who had club hits in those days would come into the disco, stand on a little platform, put in a tape that had their backing tracks of their song theyd just sing their two hits and theyd be gone and i thought, but what if they could do more . What if you could do a whole, you know, evening and tell a story that way while the audience is dancing . I like the idea of what if you can have an audience thats only half paying attention. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] somehow that appealed to me because i thought, theyll absorb it. Theyll absorb the story they dont have to be just paying attention every second. Put that in my back pocket and then years later, i read that Imelda Marcos loved going to clubs she had a mirror ball installed in her new york townhouse, which we dont all have. Seth no, we dont all have we all should. [ light laughter ] so, i googled that up and saw a video of her dancing under her home mirror ball with khashoggi, the arms dealer. Seth wow yeah, and i thought, she lives in this world that ive been thinking about if there could be a show that way and look who shes dancing with. Theres a story here. Seth so, it just clicks together like that this whole thing i can bring these two ideas together, these two things together, and lets see what happens. Lets see if theres a story seth and, again, im going to show a photo. This is a broadway theater here in new york city youve taken out all the seats so that the audience on the ground floor there in the orchestra area just sort of dances throughout the course of the show yes, so, we actually okay. If you dont want to dance, you dont have to, there are seats seth yes there are seats seth theres like nice balcony seats so you dont have to be with this but my dream came true and i could do a show where a good portion of the audience is able to dance seth yeah. It must make you so happy to see that this idea you had all those years ago is paying off. Its an entirely filipino cast that must to be an exciting thing to put together as well. Theyre, kind of, telling the story of their own country seth do you feel like obviously people who buy broadway tickets, they maybe arent expecting Something Like this do you feel like you prepared them enough for what theyre about to walk in for i hope so i hope when they go to buy the tickets, they read the thing that it says, if you buy a ticket on the dance floor, you will be standing for an hour and a half but youre not going to miss anything its all happening all around you. But if you want a seat, theres lots of ways to sit as well. Yeah i havent i go about once a week seth thats exciting and i usually go on the dance floor because i just i feel like im immersed. Im in it. Seth i feel like you are someone who has always seemed to be taken over by music and wanted to dance. I always wanted to. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] thats why we never play music during the interviews because were afraid youll just wander off. [ light laughter ] i always ask people like this, especially ones who had such long, iconic careers do you ever hear when youre in a cafe or in a car, do you ever hear your music, and what is your reaction when you hear songs of yours if i heard it sometimes Friends Point it out i dont notice seth really . I dont notice. I have it tuned out. Its like another part of my brain for musicians, they start to they listen to music in a different way. And my friend is like, david, david, david, listen to that do you know who that is . [ laughter ] seth this sounds like theyre giving you an alzheimers test [ laughter ] now, weve talked about this before, for my money, one of the best the greatest concert movie of all time. Stop making sense was just rereleased they were showing it in theaters [ cheers and applause remastered thank you seth and you went. You watched it oh ive watched it now, a few times during the opening it was a couple of weeks ago seth how many years had it been since youd seen it it had been at least 10 years, maybe 15, since is seen it projected on a screen and when it got reprinted from the negative and remixed and everything, i obviously went to a screening. And i thought, wow, this looks great, it sounds great but who is that guy . [ light laughter ] hes a very serious young man. Hes very intent is he having any fun and seth it is i will say because obviously ive met this era david byrne is who i met and you were not who i thought youd be based on that era david byrne. Who seemed like he had a sense of humor because there was something so theatrical about the film and the performance that, you know, look, giant suit thats really funny, you know what i mean . [ light laughter ] i feel like a serious guy doesnt wear a giant suit unless he knows theres something funny about it but were you having fun . I know it doesnt look but was your memory of it before you saw it do you think, oh, my god, that was so much fun to do . Yes, at the end as the show progresses, i do loosen up and im having fun and the music is just im carried away by it so, yes, i am having fun but im also like a lot of performers im thinking, what do i do next . What happens next . Where am i supposed to be . Whats going on . Yeah theres a little bit of that going on seth and was it different . Was there a heightened sense of that because you knew this time we were putting it on film obviously youve performed those songs before but did you know the whole time there are cameras here, this is the one for yeah, but then after a while you have to just, kind of, go with it. You have to go, were doing a show, im playing to the audience, not to the cameras yeah seth we did an episode based on this starring fred armisen. Fred wrote it, called final transmission. And did you know heres you guys and then heres fred and bill hader and theres maya rudolph. Theres bill hader did you know fred had a david byrne impression yes, i did. [ laughter ] but i i found out by accident i went to a fairly small Club Downtown to see a musical act at one point. And fred was the opening act and im there in the club and im watching him do me [ light laughter ] seth by the way, so doing comedy before a music show is one of the hardest things in the world. The only person ive seen do it well is fred because fred does he is a musician as well and so fred does exactly what a music crowd wants to see because a comedy if you went to a comedy club and did a david byrne impression, it might be a crazy bad idea. But you do a david byrne impression at a rock show, it might actually work. But he didnt know you were there . He did other things too, but he didnt know i was there im watching, im thinking, hes doing me. [ laughter ] and hes good at it. [ light laughter ] after the thing, he didnt know i was there. Seth yeah. He came out im still in the audience. He goes, david, im really sorry. I hope that didnt bother you too much. No, i said, it was amazing. Seth you should have told him, one of my friends called me and told me you were doing it and i came down to confront you. Well, fred is not alone. Were all such huge fans of yours. It was so cool to pay homage to that wonderful film and im so glad people can see it again and its just so lovely to have you here two broadway shows, youre finally making good.
