History. 75,000 Kaiser Permanente workers walking off the job yesterday after their contract expired. Their demands are better pay and a Major Staffing increase. This comes as major businesses and even the Government Operations are facing work stoppages. The autoworker strike is about to enter its fourth week and Congress Remains at a standstill during a search for a new speaker of the house. We have it all covered. Well start with nbcs tom costello. Hes at a kaiser facility in d. C. Hey, tom. Good morning. Reporter yeah, good morning to you. So both kaiser and the unions say they have been involved in these long negotiations, six months already. They still havent come to an agreement. They both admit they are still not at prepandemic staffing. They admit the staff is burned out right now, overworked. The union says theyre underpaid. So as this goes down right now, many kaiser families find that they simply cannot get certain procedures done, elective procedures. Reporter this morning, a big union is turning up the heat on Kaiser Permanente, the countrys largest not for profit healthcare provider. Tens of thousands of workers walking off the job for three days as contract talks stall. From virginia these people got into healthcare because they wanted to take care of patients. And theyre just stretched too thin. Reporter to denver everybody is getting depressed. Everybody is quitting because they cant handle it. You know, its a lot of work. Reporter to sacramento. We are here because they have been dealing with a short staffing crisis caused by kaiser executives for months, if not years. Reporter on strike, pharmacists, optometrists, vocational nurses, xray and Lab Technicians demanding more pay to offset inflation and more staff. They say kaiser patients, 13 million of them, can sometimes wait months for a primary care appointment and hours waiting in an e. R. People are just plain worn out. Covid was a nightmare for three years ago. And were still not done. Reporter most doctors and rns are not on strike. Were committed to addressing the staffing crisis. But were equally committed to addressing affordability crisis. Thats the issue thats at the table. Reporter kaiser says hospitals and e. R. S will remain open during the strike, but some elective procedures may be postponed. Just heart breaking to get the news yesterday that its been cancelled. When it was already rescheduled once. Tiffany youngs 17 month old son caden was supposed to have tubes placed in his ears today to relieve chronic ear infections and severe pain. Now thats been postponed until december. Hes just in pain. And its just horrible to see him. I know its a minor surgery, but to a parent and seeing your baby hit his ears and crying, you know, its heart breaking. You want this whole thing to get resolved. So this is a threeday strike, tom. Any chance we may see another wave of walkouts if they dont get to a deal soon . Reporter i think so. I mean, listen, the union is saying that this threeday strike is really a demonstration of strength to show kaiser that the union is, in fact, united. And they say, if they dont reach an agreement by some time in november, they could call a longer strike, potentially ten days that would really have an affect as well on patients and staff and the hospitals. After this weeks historic vote to oust kevin mccarthy. Well, this morning theres a lot of uncertainty surrounding that answer. Nbcs Garrett Haake is our senior capitol hill correspondent. Hes on it. So far two candidates have publicly declared theyre running for the job. Setting up yet another battle within the Republican Party over who should lead them and the house going forward. This morning, congress frozen and fractured as a leaderless Republican Party searches for a new speaker. After an eightmember faction forced the removal of kevin mccarthy. The office of speaker of the house of the United States house of representatives is hereby declared vacant. Reporter now the gop majority scrambling to select his replacement. Judiciary Committee Chairman jim jordan becoming the first declared candidate. I feel like i can unite reporter hell face off against louisianas steve scalise, currently the number two House Republican who survived a gunshot wound in 2017 and is currently battling cancer. This is really important that we get this right. So we can get back to work. Reporter rank and file republicans still furious at the eight members who joined with all democrats to depose mccarthy. Especially his chief antagonist, floridas matt gaetz. What happened yesterday is literally going to put the American Government to a halt until we find a speaker. The problem is that he didnt have credibility on either side of the aisle. He would tell conservatives one thing, moderates another and democrats something else. So faced with a surge in illegal crossings, the Biden Administration has announced it is waiving more than two dozen federal laws to add on to the border wall in southern texas. Nbc senior White House Correspondent Gabe Gutierrez has the latest. Gabe, tell us what we know about this reversal. Reporter hi, hoda, good morning. This is a striking acknowledge that changes are needed to stem the migrant influx at the southern border. Waiving 26 federal laws such as the Clean Air Act and the Safe Water Drinking act to allow border wall construction in star county, texas. This is a major reversal for President Biden who during the 2020 campaign vowed that not another foot of wall would be constructed under his administration. The president also issued a proclamation in 2021 stating that building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution. Its a waste of money. That diverts attention from general threats to our homeland security. In a statement overnight, customs and Border Protection says funds for this project were appropriated by congress in 2019 and that dhs is required to use them for their appropriated purpose, hoda. Pritzker, a staunch ally, called the migrant influx untenable and calling out the federal governments lack of intervention and coordination at the border. The white house says its provided 46 million in funding for migrants to illinois, but the Governors Office told me that is not nearly enough. Meanwhile, new york city officials have been sounding the alarm for the better part of a year and are now asking a court to suspend its right to shelter law, which requires migrants to have a place to stay. A search is unfolding right here in new york after the fatal stabbing of a brooklyn man and beloved community activist. In fact, Surveillance Video captured the terrifying attack and according to police, that video has now led them to a potential suspect. Nbcs Stephanie Gosk is following this for us. Steph, good morning. Reporter hey, good morning, craig. Ryan carson was coming back from a wedding with his girlfriend when a random encounter with a man on the street turned deadly. Carson, a dedicated public advocate, was stabbed three times, including once in the heart. We want to warn you, the video youre about to see is pretty difficult to watch. This morning, new York City Police are searching for a killer, responsible for the brutal stabbing of 32yearold public advocate, ryan carson. New Surveillance Video obtained by wnbc in new york shows the deadly confrontation as it unfolded early monday morning. The suspect seen wearing a black hoodie, walking near carson and his girlfriend as they sat on a bus stop bench started kicking scooters parked on the sidewalk nearby. According to police, carson attempted to deescalate the situation, but the man in the hoodie threatened to kill him and pulled a knife. Ill kill you [ bleep ]. Chill, chill, chill. Appearing to run, carson stumbled. Thats when police say the attacker stabbed him three times. As mr. Carson laid dying on the sidewalk, the male with the knife kicks him in the chest, threatens to stab the woman companion. Reporter police say they have a person of interest in the murder. We have received several leads in regards to this case and have developed a suspect. Reporter adding that prior to the stabbing the suspect was agitated with this woman who they believe is his girlfriend. According to police, she apologized to the couple after arriving to the scene. The Biden Administration canceling an additional 9 billion in debt just days after repayments started up again for the first time in three years. Nbcs vicky nguyen is here to explain all this. Break it all down. So who does this impact, vick . Good morning, hoda. The president made this announcement yesterday, 125,000 americans will see 9 billion in Student Loan Debt relief. You might be wondering, where does this 9 billion suddenly come from . Well the Education Department says, look, this is in the system. These are from fixes to a broken loan system. Meaning some of these people may have already been paying for 20 years on time, due this relief and never knew they were. Lets break down the number. 5 billion of the 9 billion will go to 53,000 workers or so these are Public Service workers. Think firefighters who have ten years of service the next 2. 8 billion goes to people who are already enrolled in incomedriven Repayment Programs meaning you have a certain income, you have a certain number of family members, your payment might be 0 already and then the final 1. 2 billion goes to 22,000 people with permanent disabilities, think veterans and this comes right in time this may not have been a coincidence because those repayments started on sunday. Uhhuh. We remember there was a Supreme Court case that struck down a larger forgiveness of student debt that the administration was trying to push through this is something totally separate from that so, repayments started i think it was on sunday yes. Whats the word on the street how are people handling it what does the administration say . Big picture in june, the Supreme Court said you dont have the authority to give people 20,000 back in student loans. So thats not going to happen. The reality is 45 million americans carry student debt in some form or fashion a total of 1. 3 trillion in debt on average, people are carrying 20 to 25,000 each so repayment looks like a 200 to 300 payment per month that people are coming up with. Nbc news talked to a lot of folks in this position saying with inflation, where do i get that money from. Is it my gas bill . Is it my grocery bill . Do i take on an extra job . So this plan yesterday certainly helps that 125,000 folks. Whats next any chance there would be even more relief for some of these borrowers or is this the end of the road the president said this continues to be a priority for him. Its Something Big that he campaigned on. Next week a bunch of state attorneys generals will be meeting along with borrowers and student loan servicers to try to come up with more plans. In june, President Biden announced a 12month onramp Repayment Program which is basically what it sounds like. Giving grace to borrowers that if you are getting back into the flow of things, that you wont be at risk of default. That you wont see your Credit Scores affected. Right now, you should also look into the save plan as well as the Higher Education act those are other avenues the administration is exploring. Like, just seeing jocelyn go down, its so sad to see a teammate get injured, but i knew i had an Important Role on the team, so i had to warm up in the back gym and be ready for anything, so it happened really fast i had to switch my mindset really quickly and get ready to compete. Sky, what does it feel like World Champion anybody who knows anything about your sport knows how hard all of you have worked inside the gym, hour after hour, day after day since you were little kids what does it mean to have that medal around your neck its such a surreal and great feeling to have. As a team, we worked so hard not only while were here but back home, just day in and day out. The up and downs so to finally get the medal around your neck and knowing that all the work has paid off is just such an amazing feeling, such a blessed feeling to have wow, you know, simone isnt with you guys, because shes going to be competing in the individual events. But i would imagine, having her is like just having kind of a warm blanket so when something goes wrong, like happened at this meet, simone probably had some words of wisdom. Nbcs tom costello joins us now with the very latest hey, tom, good morning reporter hey, hoda, 75,000 Kaiser Permanente workers have walked off the job, and this is a list we have optometrists, we have pharmacists, xray technicians, Lab Technicians, some vocational nurses, some of the people who help keep, in fact, the e. R. S and the o. R. s clean. Not doctors, not rns kaiser says the hospitals and the e. R. S remain open. 13 million kaiser patients rely on kaiser. However, right now, because of the strike, many of them are finding that their elected procedures are, in fact, being postponed or delayed by a month or even longer the employees want more pay. They say that inflation is biting into their standard of living and their current paychecks, and they want more staff. Both the union and kaiser admit that they simply dont have enough staff theyre not back at prepandemic staffing levels. They have a high burnout rate because of the stress, so theyre asking for more staff, also asking for more pay thats the Sticking Point right now. This is a threeday strike really, a show of force on the part of the union. And the union says, if they dont achieve something with the company pretty quickly with kaiser, then in november, they could go on strike again that could be a much longer strike, and it all depends on whether they make any progress the company says, kaiser says they have made progress, they have made concessions, but they are still right now stuck on pay, as their biggest issue. Theyre impacting so many different aspects of our health from gut health to Mental Health and everything in between and this starts as early as 13, as early as puberty and when were not paying attention to whats happening through these five major hormone shifts, were really doing ourselves a disservice we know from 13 to 19, we assume its puberty, we assume there needs to be hormone chaos. Simply not true. Theres a lot everyone can do to balance their hormones that moves you into your 20s, where everyone is busting it, working super hard and that only perpetuates the hormone imbalances and finally, as women hit their 30s, their earlytomid30s, theyre starting families, usually, and thats when they actually first start to think about this, what im saying, is a little late. I want you guys to start earlier when were having this conversation i think often, you have things that are going on in your life, and you think to yourself, i didnt get sleep because i was worried about work or, my hair is feeling funky because i didnt eat enough broccoli you dont associate it initially with some kind of hormone imbalance. So many people think that they need to power through like, im having this random symptom, so im going to power through it everything from energy shifts, mood shifts, not sleeping through the night, changes in your weight in either direction, not being able to focus, these are things that are actually connected to hormones. And we dont want to dismiss them, we really want to get to the bottom of it lets pretend, you say, okay, it is a hormone shift. Im 13, im 30, im 56, whatever 70. All of those shifts and you think, what can i do i thought this was just part of growing pains, basically heres the good news. When we take eastern medicine and western medicine and merge it together, we have this expanded powerful tool box to really answer all of our needs and we move through that tool box until we get the answers that work for us it starts with simple things first, get your hormones checked, understand whats happening. You ask your doctor, can i get a hormone check . Absolutely. And all women should be doing this, at least once a year get your hormones checked. Then, where do i start next . Lets start with food. Really eliminating sugar, eliminating alcohol for older women. All of these things really impact hormones. Moving on from there, increasing healthy fats so many people are fatphobic. But we need fat to build hormones so olive oil, omega3 fats, adding in fiber to help metabolize hormones really effectively. And sleep. We need to talk about sleep. Ideally, we are sleeping between 10 00 p. M. And 5 00 a. M. , which is a very eastern medicine concept that helps to balance hormones and we should be doing it maybe five out of seven nights a week. If were not doing that, were signing up for a lot of hormone shifts and hormone imbalances along the way. And i think the last one, which is also equally important, scheduling me time, scheduling your joy, really finding what lights you up. All of that plays into this hormone equation when we look at this east west tool box. And if none of thats working, we need to move through and decide what medications or hormones are going to work for you. Quickly, you mentioned gut health thats interesting like, gut health is directly related to your hormones it is so related to your hormones we can get into all the science of it. The science is catching up to what eastern medicine has always known, gut is ground zero. We have to balance the gut to take care of our hormones effectively. We are roasting these chili peppers. If you dont want to roast them, buy them from a can. These are awesome. I usually roast them, put them in a bag, steam them, peel them and then add them in really delicious, so easy. So first dish were making is called what . Chili rerkllano casserole. This is so much easier everyone loves a casserole. I love a onepot meal look, im busy. Theres a yolk in there theres a yolk in there. So what a joke, yolk . This is the first time wow thats a first maybe it wasnt that good we all missed it. Everybody missed it so 12 eggs come on, everyone focus lets make some food heavy cream were putting heavy cream, a little salt, a little pepper, boom, done were moving on. I have some tomatoes what were going to do is do some layering. Were going to build well, thats a spoon lets use a spoon and not my finger those are the chilies that you roasted . These are the chillies that i roasted. Again, you can just use chilis from a can add that a little bit of cheese what kind of cheese you got this is a monterrey jack, super delicious, easy, and layer all of that how long will we bake that . Once we layer, well move in and take this excuse me, im going to need this well then pour all of this all over and bake this at 350 for about 45 minutes thats pretty easy. I could actually do that. We move on, we have this delicious casserole. A little bit of that chilly taste. With nachos or something. This Fried Chicken youre about to make here Fried Chicken this is my favorite. She travels with her own honey. She walked i brought the honey from the ranch for you guys we have to hear every step, because this crust is other worldly. Its so good. Were going to brine this chicken. The thing about Fried Chicken is you want that moisture in the chicken, that flavor i make a brine i put some lemon juice, water, salt, a little bit of what is this rose mary and a whole bunch i literally just throw in those how long do you brine your chicken. Well, i want to say about two hours or overnight sometimes i love to just do it overnight because then you need to think about it. And its ready in the morning. All right so this is the chicken. Here is the brine all ready to go we pour that in. Let that sit for, you know, as long as you. Should the brine be cool before you pour it. Make sure you get it nice and cold and let it brine. Thats great. Now this looks like it might be part of the secret. This is insane. Whats this seasoning so we have all sorts of really delicious seasonings. Theres chili powder, paprika, salt, pepper, its very simple, though but the secret really is, this is the place where a double dip is a good thing. This is a double dip situation. Dredge twice. I dredge twice. How is it so crunchy. Is that milk or butter milk. Throw it in and then you go back again. You go back in. Its a double dip and that is good we got 30 seconds left. Okay great.
