We will review the numbers. Youre watching today in the bay. Good morning, thank you for joining us. I am laura garcia. I am marcus washington. We are tracking the hot weather out there, and it could eventually well, kari, is this a heat wave or not . Yeah, a heat wave is how long it lasts and above average temperatures for two or more days, thats a heat wave. We are seeing that. As we head into the next couple of days, it will heat up in the afternoons and the mornings are nice and mild and thats when we get a break out there. San jose starting out in the upper 70s at 10 00. Were already starting to warm up by late morning. Then as we go through the day, look at that, we will be in the mid90s, reaching 95 degrees this afternoon. A lot of mid50s year across the bay area, and even heating up in San Francisco. Much of the peninsula in the 90s today. This is not even the peak of the heat. It gets hotter for tomorrow, especially with san martin hitting 100 degrees, and upper 90s in concord, fairfield and 99 in los gatos. We will talk more about the impacts in a couple minutes. Mike, you already have some impacts in the traffic. Yeah, southbound 680 before you get to highway 4 reports of a deer in lanes, a deer that was hit earlier. A warning as we come through the fall months, we will see a lot of reports like that especially in the Early Morning hours and in the hilly portions of the area. And south of sunol, we could see early slowing. We will continue to track that. The south bay peninsula and north bay peninsula moving well. Dianne feinstein, her service will be a private event, not public as promised before. Security is being cited. Heres a live look at city hall this morning. Thousands came to pay their respect in a public viewing there. The response so enormous, Visitation Hours were extended by one hour. Another iconic San Francisco mayor, willie brown, said feinstein would have loved the large turnout. They are responding with sparkles of joy just to be present to say goodbye. Former speaker and close friend, nancy pelosi, stopped by, as did mayor london breed. Each is expected to speak at her funeral today. And then this is day two of the Largest Health care strike in u. S. History. Today in the bays bob redell is live for us outside of the kaiser location in dublin. Talk to us about the progress of the negotiations. How is that going . Reporter good morning, marcus. Kaiser and the union that represents its worker are still meeting at the bargaining table, and according to kaiser they did come to an agreement on several proposals on late tuesday. We remain committed to reaching a new agreement that continues to provide our employees with marketleading wages, excellent benefits, income plans and professional development opportunities, end of quote. They started the strike yesterday, and more than half are located in california, and the rest are in oregon state, and the Washington State and washington, d. C. Area. The main issue is cost of living increases, they want more money and the lack of staffing. Both sides admit that kaiser which is the largest Nonprofit Health care provider in the country is not yet back to prepandemic staffing, and as a result workers complain patients have to wait weeks and even months for appointments. We are so short staffed. It does affect us, and it gives us burnout and its not safe for our patients. Reporter registered nurses and doctors are not involved in the strike and the hospitals and Emergency Rooms do remain open. Nonurgent appointments and elected proceeders might have to be or have been rescheduled because of the strike, and out patient pharmacies also closed. The strike in california is supposed to last three days, until 6 00 a. M. To 6 00 p. M. Through tomorrow, and hopefully both sides will come to some sort of agreement before then. Hopefully they can come together with some agreement to end it. Bob, thanks. In San Francisco, all clear and its 66 degrees in san mateo. We have temperatures ranging from low 70s in hayward, where we have more of a breeze picking up, those temperatures are slightly warmer there. Taking a look at concord, at 8 00 it will be 64, and then try to get any activities in before we hit the 90s. We are seeing gas prices rise out there, mike. The price increases that we have seen this year so far really have not impacted subscribers so much, and combined with a crackdown on password sharing it seems likely theres room to raise them further, and i expect this to continue in the future. We will see some cooler temperatures in the forecast for much of next week. Take a look at the inland forecast with our temperatures in the mid90s. The feels like is in the 90s and 100 degrees. On saturday its hot, but feels better for sunday. Then 70s in the forecast for next week. San francisco also heating up. Wouldnt be surprised to see 90s here, but rain in the forecast for monday and tuesday. Mike, what is happening on 680 . We have a couple crashes. I wanted to show you the traffic break in marin and thats clearing some of the sensors. Good news. 680, a couple crashes, and the first one still on the grid. Reports of a deer that was hit earlier, so that lane is still blocked. Another report hear, 680 southbound at 24, so at the walnut creek interchange, and i dont know if its the second report and somebody was confused about which interchange they were approaching, or if its a second one involving an animal as well. The rest of the bay, a smooth and easy drive. Theres a fire off 680 around alum rock and i am checking that report. Back to you. Thank you. Good morning to you. I am marcus washington. I am laura garcia. You will be really hot by this afternoon depending on where you are in the bay area. Usually we are talking about cozy, sweaters in the fall, but not today. Not today. We will have to give it a few days because we will have some of that eventually as we go through the forecast. This is where the season where we see the crazy shifts from extreme heat to nice and cool weather, and today its going to be heating up. We are going from mid50s right now, as you step out the door. We are seeing that in parts of the north bay. We are anywhere from 54 in sonoma to 72 to start in hayward. So temperatures are ranging quite a bit already this morning. There will be a heat advisory in all the areas shaded in orange, which includes the inner bay as well as San Francisco. We are looking at temperatures today that will reach into the upper 80s and even mid90s. A few of us, san martin, heading for the 90s. We will get a look at what is ahead for the weekend as temperatures start to come down. Now, mike, you have a new report out of the Altamont Pass . Yeah, 280 and 580 merge, and its around grant line road, pittsburgh 580, there are reports of some activity going on. Sounds like there could be a hazard, debris in the roadway. Just prepare for that. There may be more slowing out of tracy and i will continue to track that. The rest of the bay sensors show green for the most part, and coming across the carquinez bridge, highway 7, a slowing pattern is just starting. Thanks, mike. Its 5 33 right now. In a matter of hours, the final farewell for Dianne Feinstein. It will start at San Francisco city hall. And Ginger Conejero saab is outside city hall for us. There are important changes for anybody planning to head there, and they should know things are different. Reporter thats right, just in case people were planning to what was a public memorial here outside San Franciscos city hall, you need to take note, its no longer open to the public. That change was made last night because of security reasons, but, marcus and laura, if you can see behind me, there are still quite a number of chairs that have already been setup. 1,500 guests have been invited to the memorial set to take place this afternoon. I, myself, was here in the Late Afternoon hours from 4 30 this 6 00, and there was a line of people on van ness and mcallister, and i had to turn around because i was with my children. So many came to that pay respect to senator Dianne Feinstein, and it there were powerful images of Dianne Feinstein, and this one is of the late senator being carried out of city hall for the last time, and a place she was familiar with as president of the board of supervisors, and her leadership in the city began in the wake of the tragic assassination of mayor George Moscone and supervisor, harry milk. Reporter also yesterday the San Francisco gay men chorus contributed through songs where she lay in state, in the rotunda. And willie brown paid his respect and said the senator would have loved the large turnout. They are all here responding the way i think she would have liked them to have responded. Reporter former speaker of the house and close friend of senator feinstein, nancy pelosi as well as mayor london breed was present, too. There are a number of high profile speakers, including Vice President kamala harris, and Senate Majority leader, chuck schumer, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi and london breed. There will also be a taped message from President Joe Biden that will be played. Also expected to speak this afternoon at the memorial is the senators granddaughter who also works for the office of mayor london breed. She will give her personal note bidding farewell to her grandmother. We will carry that memorial starting here at 1 00 p. M. , onair and online. The big takeaway here is the memorial no longer public but you can catch it on the air and online. Thank you very much. Because of todays service, all services at city hall will be closed, and again the Memorial Service is scheduled for 1 00 p. M. , and you can watch it here on nbc bay area, or wherever you stream your content. Heres a look at kaiser in dublin. Nationwide some 75,000 kaiser medical assistants and xray and pharmacy techs are holding a strike. The main Sticking Point are wages and staffing levels. We are so short staffed. We keep telling them, we have been doing this since the pandemic three years ago, so it affects us and gives us burnout and its not safe for our patients. Kaiser says while a settlement instill not in reach it does have tentative agreements with the union including one on minimum wage. Also hospitals and Emergency Rooms remain open. Our bob redell will have an update coming up in 30 minutes. Walnut creek leaders are the latest to put zoom on hold at least when it comes to public hearings. Yesterday they announced the end to the practice of virtual Public Comment, which really took off during the pandemic. The problem, too much of it is filled with socalled zoom bombing tied to hate. The mayor said one zoom caller released personal information about a board member. They announced an address that was a private home. Residents can still watch the proceedings online, but Public Comment can only happen inperson. Sonoma county and el cerrito have done the same, and others are considering it. Vta Board Members will decide if 200 tiny homes should be built near a maintenance yard off zanker. The homes would be for those looking for just a steppingstone, and the state calls it the most viable option in san jose. Taking a live look in San Francisco where fleet week is up and running. If you are planning on attending some of this weeks events, meteorologist, kari hall, has a look at the forecast. The skies are going to cooperate. Yes, and it looks great for the first half of the weekend, but then things change quite a bit as we go from friday to monday. If you like the warmer weather, it will be in the mid80s for the air show on friday and good visibility, of course. Sunshine continues on saturday with upper 70s. A big drop in temperatures on sunday. If you like the cooler temperatures you may want to wait for the end of the weekend, but we are also going to be watching areas of fog. This weekend, the blues, brewsing and bbq will be happening in napa. If you are out there, wear sun screen and stay hydrated, and then maybe wrap up the weekend watching the cowboys came, and we are hoping for another win for the 49ers. We will see temperatures about 80 degrees throughout the game. If you want to just get away from it all and maybe go to the monterey and enjoy time by the waves, it will be in the mid70s on friday. Cooling off on sunday, if you are going all the way out of town to l. A. This weekend, it will be hot there for at least tomorrow with highs in the upper 80s, and then low 80s for the rest of the weekend. We will talk more about what we will see coming up in a few minutes. Mike has been tracking the commute with a couple hiccups here and there. Yeah, san jose, folks heading to the first meeting, typical slowing, nothing to be alarmed about. It will clear up over the next 40 minutes but it will kick in again over the next hour after that. Highway 4, and highway 37 typical, slower patterns and also down towards the carquinez bridge into berkeley out of richmond, a slower drive on west 80. No major backup getting into San Francisco. And then they are having the private funeral, and its a private event and you can stream it online because we will have it covered for you. You have to access on van ness on the other side, so keep that in mind. Also because of a band performing here for fleet week, its in the castro today, so there are a couple hours where its affected because of all the traffic around the embarcadero. Coming up here on today in the bay, a look at the new memorial in the south bay honoring their sacrifice. In washington still nobody in charge of the house of representatives. Thats not going to change soon. Also, mystery solved. Have you seen these weblike substances flying over the bay area . What exactly are they . We have the answer. We have the answer. We will see temperatures reaching in the low to mid90s. It will also be hot again tomorrow. We will talk about a cooldown in our full microclimate forecast. Yeah, that forecast is for napa, but keep Drinking Water as well. A typical pattern on this approach, and we will show you any hot spots in Contra Costa County where we see the biggest change. San jose now has a permanent tribute to its fallen officers. Last night the department unveiled its memorial honoring the sacrifice of those officers that died in the line of duty. During that ceremony, the 13 officers names were read aloud. He was an amazing man. He had oodels of integrity. The display has been in the works for more than eight years. Can you now see it for yourself at San Jose Police headquarters on mission street. A nice tribute there. Its 5 46 right now. President biden said hes planning a major address to show america and congress how important funding for ukraine really is. And scott is joining us. The worry is Congress Wont be able to get the troops over in russia. Yeah, to fight russia. Yeah, congress cant do anything, really, because it cant. It cant make a decision about anything overall until the house makes a decision on who will lead it as speaker. President biden made that announcement about ukraine as he announced new relief on Student Loans. Lets be clear, some of the same elected republicans were strongly opposed to the Student Loans forgiveness. Republicans blocked bidens attempt to give large swaths of Student Loans, and the Student Loan Relief program biden announced were programs already in place. And then no movement on picking a new speaker today. In fact, the house is not even meeting today. Back when mccarthy ran for speaker, he convinced maga republicans to vote for him by giving them the power to take away his job, motion to vacate is what they call it. And now the most republican senator says dont do that again. I have no advice to give to House Republicans except one, i hope whoever the next speaker is gets rid of the motion to vacate. I think it makes a speakers job impossible. And the American People expect us to have a functioning government. We do, indeed. The latest in dog news. Commander has left the white house. Reports say last week he bit another member of the secret service. The president s other dog, major, eventually was shown the door after too many bites in the past. The white house wont say where commander has been rehoused, marcus, only that hes not living at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. Thanks, scott. If you have seen Something Like this floating in the skies recently and you are wondering, what is it . We have an answer for you this morning. It could be silk from baby spiders called ballooning. It has been spotted everywhere, including from the video there in the south bay. The baby spiders have the silk when they are born and it has to do with wind and electric fields. The wind is dragging them and affects the directionality of where they are going. They can sense the electric fields. They have structures on their legs atuned to their electricity fields to respond to them. Its helping to set the mood ahead of halloween, so its interesting. They are everywhere. Ready . Cue the music. Yeah, were talking some football a matchup in the bay area and the rest of the football world is waiting for. The niners and the cowboys, the stories rivalry on sunday. In the early 80s, which catapulted the niners to their first super bowl title, and the niners eliminated the cowboys the last two seasons. We understand the history, the niners and the cowboys, and i am happy we have been able to make it a matchup that people can get excited about. Its a big game but its also you dont want to make it too big because its another regular season game. Okay. They are playing it cool. We can do it, too. Dont forget, the 49ers taking on the cowboys on sunday night football right here on bay area. Network coverage starts at 4 00 with kickoff at 5 20. Going to be a good game. Go to the church in the morning instead of the afternoon, maybe, that day. True. Halloween officially has a new mascot. I am not a jackolantern, my name is lewis. Is that not a jackolantern, its lewis. Its an 8foot light and sound pumpkin. Its sold at target for 180. But its already completely sold out so you cant get one. Videos of the viral decoration item is racking up millions of views online. Who is lewis . We still dont know. We know halloween is only 26 days away, so maybe you can make your own lewis costume. Yeah, its popular, and people can make one. Yeah, he says, im lewis. Hes, like, my name is not jack, its lewis. We have a Little Orange on the map here, not because of halloween but because we have a heat advisory in effect. Let me show you where all the areas are highlighted or are going to have high temperatures, but they are highlighted because we dont often see the high temperatures here. We will have highs near the high 80s and 100 degrees in parts of the south county for today. Even up and down the peninsula we are headed to the 90s for this afternoon. In gilroy, we start out nice and cool. Low 60s at 8 00. Its still pretty comfortable, but it does heat up fast as we head towards noon, reaching into the upper 80s and eventually into the mid and upper 90s for an afternoon high. For much of the south bay we are seeing mid90s for today. As we look at the 7day forecast at the bottom of the screen, it will be hot tomorrow and into saturday as well. 93 in walnut creek today, and hayward reaching 95 degrees. We are also going to reach into the low 90s for redwood city. 93 in san mateo. 86 in daly city. In San Francisco, we are going to hit 90 today in the mission district, and 91 downtown. For the north bay, 94 degrees in sonoma, napa, as well as novato. After today we are still dealing with the heat but we will start to see things breaking down and changing. By early next week we will see the High Pressure moving out of the way and even a chance of rain coming in as the trough dips across the region. Much cooler temperatures settling in. It does stay with us for quite a while. A slight warmup for the middle of next week, and then another chance of rain next weekend. How much could we see out of the first system coming in, and it looks like the north bay could see the rain between monday and tuesday, but it could be anywhere from quarter to half an inch of rain. That would be pretty significant. Most of us wont see it south of the north bay in the golden gate bridge. It will still be hot in the meantime. We have to be really careful under these conditions where a fire could start and spread quickly. All of the fires in this kind of weather setup, man made, so be careful out there. As we head towards the middle of the weekend, we are in the mid80s, and then back in the 70s for the start of next week. Temperatures are also heating up in San Francisco. Mike, do you have changes for the east bay commute . Yeah, predictable changes but changes nonetheless. We have filled in the lanes here, and getting into oakland and towards San Francisco, and there could be more folks because of fleet week and Dianne Feinsteins funeral, and now its a private funeral and you can watch it online with us as well. And theres an incident westbound on 80. Typical pattern through contra costa, and marin as well. Back to you. Thanks so much, mike. Happening now for you, the stage is set for what may become americas largest student union. How they have secured the right to form a union. The university has one week from today, thats next thursday, to respond to the announcement. Organizers are hoping to hold a vote as soon as january. We have a busy hour ahead of 6 00, including more coverage on the service of Dianne Feinstein. We will take you live to city hall for a look at what is on tap.
