These are big numbers of people who are very interested in the democratic machinery. Butler was previously appointed to the university of california board of regents by thengovernor brown. She resigned from her position in 2021. She is current lay maryland voter, but the Governors Office says she owns a home in california and will switch her registration to there. Butler will become the first openlygay u. S. Senator from california, and the second black woman to represent the state in the senate. Butler is expected to be sworn in as early as this week and will serve until the next senator is elected. Kaiser also says it may need to reschedule certain nonurgent appointments and procedures and some outpatient pharmacies will be affected if there is a strike. And for the first time theyre speaking up and speaking out against the departments policies for nursing mothers, and they are demanding change. Nbc bay areas Ginger Conejero saab has been digging into the story for week. And she joins us tonight. These photos are from a Police Station in San Francisco, where officers who are new mothers have been nursing for years. One shows a lactation station inside a bathroom steps away from a toilet. The officers took these pictures to show conditions they say make for a very traumatic return to work. Sorry. Always makes me cry about what happened. Reporter shes a San Francisco police officer, concerned that if she shows her face when she talks about concerns for nursing mothers in the department she could face retaliation. Just the environment i was in was not great. Reporter and shes not alone. It was extremely stressful. Reporter i spoke with three differents of oers. I never really thought it would be so hard. Reporter who work at different Police Stations about what they faced when they returned from maternity leave. When they asked where they could pump breast milk they say they were directed to a locker room or coworkers office. Its almost like a culture if we ignore it, were not going to ask for it. I ended up using a room that a woman before me had used, and that was in the womens restroom in a stall, and it was literally five feet away from the toilet. Heres a picture of what shes talking about. Its dirty. Its small. Its cramped. Its uncomfortable. Reporter she says new moms have opted to pump here, because there is no accessible option that gives them privacy. It was disgusting. I felt bad, because here i am trying to make milk, make food for my baby, and im right next to a toilet where several other people use the bathroom. And it just, it made me feel bad, like i wasnt a good mom. Like i wasnt doing my best to sort of protect my baby, and that definitely affected my Mental Health negatively. Reporter others compromised privacy for a cleaner space. I basically had to pump in the locker room where i was walked i was walked in on, multiple times, and they didnt do it on purpose. They just, there was no, there s everyone has the code. Reporter but a cleaner space, even an office, was not necessarily the right solution. Although much better than pumping next to a toilet, was still, it presented challenges within itself. Reporter like constantly requesting to use ones office, sometimes a supervisors. Definitely affect bid ability to produce milk and engorgement and all the other issues that come with not being able to pump on my regular schedule or pump as often as i normally would. Reporter both state and federal laws have requirements. The location must have a place to sit, a surface to place a breast pump and refrigerator or other cooling device to store milk. I reached out to sfpd who said their representative was not able to answer our questions in person. Instead they sent us this statement, saying in part the sfpd is committed to providing private space for lactation at the workplace for ourgoes on tos have more ability to dedicate a permanent room for lactation. Other locations such as our smaller and older districtations district stations have limited space. I said they would buy these pods. But crickets. Reporter she says the department has ignored the issue for too long. We have, you know, locker rooms where youre setting up next to a toilet to lactate. I mean, thats disgusting. Lets not pull any punches, right . Thats just total bs. Reporter sfpd directed me to the existing lactation policy which says in part, employees have the right to request lactation accommodations. That policy is dated july 29, 2021, is effective for two years, meaning it would have expire d a couple months ago. It says the sfpd is committed to providing a supportive environment for breastfeeding employees. Anyone who feels they may be subject to Workplace Discrimination or harassment can make a formal complaint, which we investigate thoroughly. Sfpd says it has not received any formal complaint about officers lactation options, but their statement to us also made no mention of reviewing the Current Situation to see if it needs to make any changes.
