Reporter in a joint show of support captain tony jones say their expanding efforts to get criminals off the streets including focusing on gangs. Today they announced the arrest of ten suspected gang members connected to carjackings, armed robberies, and car burglaries. They say those arrests led them to a dozen guns which now off the streets. We understand what the community is going through. We hear, you know, the cries for help from the community. Were taking it seriously and doing something about it. Reporter police say the ten suspects including one minor were arrested after a 2 1 2 week investigation and surveillance operation. Investigators say at least one of men arrested is connected to an attempted homicide. They also say the gangs are changing their m. O. The groups and gangs we have been focusing on traditionally are now involved in armed robberies and carjackings. So has begun to shift the focus. Reporter it comes as oakland is facing a 21 increase in Violent Crimes from last year, more than a 30 increase in robberies and burglaries, and 51 increase in vehicle thefts, triggering a brief protest by more than 200 businesses this week. The mayor says shes committed to cutting crime. The increase of Violent Crimes since 2020 is deeply concerning. It is unacceptable. And i know that as your mayor the buck stops with me. Reporter she says shes working with the governor and attorney general to address crime while promising to expand opd officers at the short staffed department and bring more Community Ambassadors on the street. We are bringing in the resources to our cities. And again, you will see more arrests for those people victimizing our business, or residents. Reporter all nine adults are facing weapons charges by the District Attorney and the charges for the minor are still pending while the opd says theyre reaching out to potential victims. A tragic end to the frantic effort to save a construction worker in San Francisco today after a trench he was working in collapsed. They started around 10 00 this morning on oak street. Firefighters quickly started working to rescue that worker who was buried under 8 feet of dirt and debris. They brought in an urban search and rescue dog to pinpoint his location. Crews used a massive vacuum to syphon out some of the dirt. After two hours they reached him, but paramedics and a doctor pronounced him dead. Tonight several agencies led by cal osha are trying to figure out exactly what went wrong. We want to make sure we know exactly what happened. We want to make sure Something Like this never happens again. We never want a construction accident. Safety is our number one priority. The citys Public Works Department says the man was part of a private construction crew working on one of the citys sewer upgrade projects. The San FranciscoPublic Utilities commission identified the company as darcy and hardy construction. They have not identified the worker who died. A wellknown hotel in san jose is being transformed into Affordable Housing. Today the grand reopening for the arena hotel has been totally revamped to be an Affordable Housing development for the formerly unhoused. 89 units will be available. A new resident of the complex spoke about her experience transiging off the streets. The first thing id like to touch upon is the availability and the humaneness of the staff and everyone here. Its like dealing with homelessness over a perd of a decade and not having any stable environment, here they dont make it very hard for you to adapt at all. The renovation was funded by measure e from the city of san jose and governor newsoms project home key. A fight for the rights of tenants in the east bay. A group called concord Tenant Coalition rallied outside to deliver more than a 1,000 signature tuesday the city council. Theyre asking for better protections for renters and also limits for rent hikes. We want every concord resident to have an affordable, stable, and dignified place to call home. We want a concord where housing is a human right and not a privilege reserved just for the wealthy. Now, the city council is reviewing tenant protection proposals and is set to vote on those proposals before the end of the year. Okay, San Franciscos iconic pier 39 is celebrating its 45th anniversary. Its long been a mustsee destination for visitors as we know, but theres been a lot of questions how its recovering from the pandemic and how its navigating the citys challenges. Now, the rainfall itself will be to the north and also to the west of us by tomorrow night. Then were going to get into some scattered rain chances here on saturday morning, and then were going to hold onto the spotty chances here even through saturday afternoon. So right now it does not look widespread for us, and then by sunday it looks like it positions itself more off to the east, so that would mean lower rain chances on sundays forecast the way we see it now. Overall trace amounts to about a quarter of an inch here for the bay area. So on that seven day forecast what youll see in San Francisco, a little bit of wind tomorrow. 15 to 30, best chance of some scattered rain on saturday, and then chances on sunday only 20 right now.
