Lot of walking, and people make a lot of illegal left turns where we are. There are signs all over the place. No left turns. I dont know if people would honor it. I would be against it. I know its maybe a safety issue, but i think it creates a traffic problem. Cars get all backed up. Reporter prestons effort lines up with a local campaign urging citywide no turn on red policy. More than 50 intersections in the tenderloin already have the restrictions. These have been very successful with pilot and in the tenderloin in my district and it has been really successful in preventing drivers from having conflicts and collisions with pedestrians and cyclists. Reporter preston says there was an 80 reduction in close calls after the new rule wasput in place. He says its critical to prioritize Pedestrian Safety particularly for seniors, people with disabilities and children who navigate the citys notoriously busy streets. We have a vision zero plan. We are supposed to end traffic fatalities by 2024. The numbers have been going up not down. And so we have to implement these policies. This is one that is very low cost. Its proven to work. Reporter just last month, a child was hit and killed in a city crosswalk. The sfmta says its committed to vision zero and the expansion of no turn on red saying in a Statement Today in that they are ensuring the policies prioritize the city, businesses and high pedestrian areas where safety risks are the highest. We are still reviewing the details of the resolution and appreciate the supervisors commitment to safer streets. If approved, prestons resolution would push the mta to come back with a plan to expand the rule within 120 days. Christie smith, nbc bay area news. In an emergency you cannot only call but text 911. Sometimes its safer than calling such as in a Domestic Violence situation or a kidnapping. But as investigative candace wynn found out there is a major problem. What did you find . Text no 911 has only been available here in california for a couple of years. So whether you are deaf or in a lifeordeath situation, or you need to call for help silently, it may be your only option. We found it doesnt work as well as calling 911. A lot of people dont realize when they send a text message to 911, 911 does in the necessarily know exactly where they are located. Without knowing the location, nothing else can happen. What if im texting 911, does that dispatcher get the same geolocation information as quickly . Absolutely not. As you heard, in an emergency your location is the most important piece of information a dispatcher needs to get First Responders to you quickly. When our Investigative Unit learned about this problem, we spoke to experts nationwide and took the issue to officials in sacramento. We also spoke to a woman who got tired of waiting for the government to fix issue and started working on her own solutions. That is coming up in our full investigation tonight at 11 00. With the Investigative Unit, candace wynn, nbc bay area news. Thank you. Its a big night in politics. What happens tonight will shape the immediate future of the president ial race for the republicans. In less than 30 minutes, the second reason debate starts in southern california. Search candidates take the stage down at the Ronald Reagan president ial library in simi valley. The frontrunner, former President Trump, will not be there. Instead, he will be talking to an auto workers in michigan who are currently on strike. Among those trying to gain traction, Florida Governor ron desantis and former South Carolina governor nikki haley. Joining us from washington, d. C. , is nbcs kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. As we head into this debate now, just off the top of your head, two big things that you are looking for tonight . Raj, so good to be with you. Ill be looking for a couple of big things tonight. I think the first one, if i have to boil it down to two, will governor ron desantis, who was the candidate to beat former president donald trump, will he have a breakout moment . Remember what happened during the first debate. He sort of hung back a little bit. He didnt really get into the fray when the other candidates were mixing it up. Will we see a shift in strategy . I have been talking to folks who are familiar with his planning for the debate tonight, and i can tell you they are signaling we may see him start to sharp on his tone, try to get into the freya little bit more to try to create that contrast with the other candidates. The other thing i will be looking for is the trump factor. If former President Trump is not going to be there. He is going to be in michigan with the auto workers who are, of course, on strike. He is having his own counterprogramming event. To what extent will he be front and center on the stage . Remember in the first debate, vivek ramaswamy, he is the businessman, the relative newcomer, he really seized the spotlight in talking to a number of the campaigns. I can tell you that they want to try to keep the focus on former President Trump. Will they be successful at that . If i could squeeze if one more, will former u. N. Ambassador nikki haley build on momentum we saw in the first debates. She had a strong showing. Her poll numbers went up. What will she do tonight to try to capitalize on that momentum . You talked about governor desantis, nikki haley, donald trump who wont be there. You havent mentioned mike pence. Is he the forgotten person in this race . I think its too soon to say that. But i do think that this is going to be a big test for him. Look, we are seeing his campaign put out some sharp statements already about some of the proposals by former president donald trump, for example, that 10 tariff that he is proposing. He has taken some sharp aims at trumps comments to me on meet the press in which the former president would not say if he supported a national ban on abortion. So i think you are going to see that issue of abortion potentially be front and center as it relates to trump and i expect his former Vice President had will really try to use that as an issue to gain some ground in this race. Final question for you. Do you expect fireworks tonight . Everyone playing offense . Or do you expect everyone to behave . Im expecting fireworks. I hope we see some fireworks. Just talking to the campaigns, i think they know that each of these candidates, including governor chris christie, by the way, who is someone we would expect to see some fireworks from, his goal, i am told, based on those close to him, is going to be to keep the focus on former President Trump and try to draw that contrast with the former president. Ill also be watching closely for senator scott budman. A lot of people came away from the first diablo saying he is nice guy. His supporters want to see him be tough, not just nice. We will be looking for the fireworks. It should be interesting. Kristen welker from nbcs meet the press. See you sunday morning, by the way. Thanks for your time. And we will see kristin tonight for ourpeal coverage of thisepublican debate. Our coverage begins at 8 00 streaming on nbc news now. Reporter Artificial Intelligence in stores, possibly bringing real savings home to you. In petaluma, chris kamura oh, nbc bay area news. Thats fascinating to see that. I know. That technology is impressive. And then the next question, can they, if they see this, then enforcing that is the next concern for so many of the stores here. I know. Do you have security stop this person . There are so many risks. We need other its a different conversation. Yeah. Its hard to see. We heard from somebody yesterday if one of our reports, they were even scared to go into the store because its happening so much. Wow. It is scary zero. Lets talk weather. So nice compared to what we went through last week with the smoke. We have some rain chances coming our way. I wanted to start off tonight with a look at our rain futurecast. You can see by saturdays forecast rain chances are not just going to be here in the bay area, but through a good portion of california. Again, saturday reintroducing that possibility of rainfall and even, check it out, right here thats white and pink, thats rain snow mix, even some snow accumulations expected for the sierra. More looks coming up in about two minutes here. So hang tight. I do want to take it right into tomorrow mornings forecast first. Chilly out there. Now that we are in fall, Mother Nature is right on time here. We have more 50s coming back. 54 through the south bay. A cool, refreshing air as you step out the door to get off to work, the kids to school. 55 in the east bay. To the north bay jacket weather and 52 just a little bit of patchy fog right at the immediate coastline. Temperatures through tomorrow stay really, really nice. We will warm up through the afternoon, but we are right about near average. That leaves us with 84 concord e 82 morgan hill, napa 83, downtown San Francisco right here at 71. Now, if you are doing any traveling, i wanted to show you the travel trouble spots. We could get into more rain in seattle and portland. Also some storms over chicago and detroit and some of those thunderstorms as well in orlando. Most of the heat here over phoenix with 102, also some hot weather in Oklahoma City at 94 and dallas 96. There is no way at home we are going to see any chance of heat coming our way through this weekend. Thats from that developing storm system we have been talking about. There are two important things. We have been following closely the past 24 hours, the first is it now looks like the storm system will develop over the pacific. So that will allow those rain chances to increase by saturday and sunday. The second thing we have also started to notice today is now what looks like this is going to linger into sundays forecast. Rain chances both on saturday and also on sunday. But as i have been mentioning as well, it doesnt look like a washout all weekend long. So i still think you will be able to get stuff done. Vul to watch out for these popup thunderstorms. So here it is. 8 00 p. M. On friday, rain at north and also off to the west. As we head through saturday morning decent chance for us to get in on some of this rainfall. Then as we head through saturday afternoon we will see the possibility of some popup thunderstorms even into the early evening. Sunday it may swing back around right there into sunday afternoon for a few more showers. Rainfall totals trace amounts to a 0. 25 inch for most of the bay area. The way the storm is setting up we actually may get a little bit higher amounts with the south bay,. 25 to. 05 inch. Not only rainfall, but sierra snow. If you are headed to the sierra, we may get a one inch in kirkwood, Mammoth Lakes four inches, lone pine one inch. Interesting weekend with that weather. The sevenday forecast in San Francisco 60s are staying with us and across the inland valleys we are going to dip down to 70 on saturday with a little wind. Its going to feel kinda chilly. So time to get the pumpkin, right . Its a big uturn from today to this weekend. Those pumpkin patches will be busy. Its time that time again . I refuse to get its not october first. I kneel people have decorations out, but christmas decorations. Oh, gosh. Thanks, jeff. Up next, the boss is forced to cancel. Almost a week ago. The next game four days away. This sunday the Arizona Cardinals come to down, the same cardinals who beat the cowboys. The niners coming off that impressive win against the new york giants last week. Today Kyle Shanahan giving the cardinals a lot of respect. Be careful of this game. He addressed his own situation. His contract extension with the niners. Doing it before this season even started i think meant a lot to me. Shows you the people that were with, we believe in each other, whether we were 03, 30. We like where we live and the people we work with and they are committed to giving us a chance to go for it every single year. Kids are in high school now. Built a new house on the peninsula. He will be here, we think, for a while. With the management and other key pieces locked in, could the niners win not just one super bowl, multiple super bowls . Is. Between talent, finances and management, this team is built to win three consecutive super bowls. Overreaction . No. A team built to win is quite different than actually winning. So were making no predictions here about the future. But we can say that the 49ers are built to win now and for the foreseeable future. Quarterback brock purdy is the 47th highest paid player on the team. And that allowed general manager john lynch and his staff to stack a roster with highly paid star power at nearly every other position on both sides of the ball. And it will be the same thing next year as the nfl rules prevent purdys representation and the 49ers from reworking his contract until after the 2024 season. Ceo jed york signed lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan to multiyear contract extensions. Hiring those two were franchise altering decisions. You cant say that they are the top gm head coach pairing in the nfl until they win a super bowl and then we can have that conversation. But the smarts, leadership, culture, and stability that lynch and shanahan brought to the organization have enabled the 49ers to reach status of yearly contender. They are popular inside the building. Specifically and notably, inside the locker room, as well as with a fan base that grew accustomed to organizational dysfunction before their arrivals. They are placed themselves in a position with the Upper Echelon of the nfl and it doesnt appear as if they are going away anytime soon. Okay. So the pieces are in place like matt said. They may not win a super bowl, but they are built to win multiple super bowls. Key nuances there. You were shocked. It is surprising. This her looking so good. Yeah.
