Our scott budman will be filling us in on which stores are actually going to be shutting down. Also, will the Government Shutdown ground the blue angels . The question a lot of people have today. Our ian cull is in San Francisco talking to the leaders of fleet week, and hes getting answers. And theres a new contender in the race to lead San Francisco. The Levis Strauss heir launching his campaign to run for mayor. President biden arichg in the bay area just about 60 minutes ago this is his third visit to the bay area this year alone. The president and air force one touched down at Moffett Field at 3 20 this afternoon. The president then ascended the stairs from air force one, and he even stopped to talk, take some pictures of people waiting for his arrival on the tarmac, even a selfie with his family before going inside the Nasa Ames Research Center at Moffett Field. Next, he is headed for atherton, one of the richest cities in america, for a private fundraiser. The event is being held and tickets range from 500 to 1,000. We will have a report live next with more on the president s plans in the bay area including a meeting with some big names in tech before he leaves tomorrow. New at 4 30, another major retailer is Closing Stores in the bay area because of crime, and this time it is target. The locations are in San Francisco, oakland, and pittsburg. Lets bring in scott budman. Scott, you broke the news today on social media when you first heard about this. Tell us about the store closures. The latest one is plaguing the bay area. An overall Strong Economy but hit hard by crime and concern not only for the stores themselves but for employees and those around it. Thats what target is citing. Three stores of the nine the target is closing are here in the bay area, and thats really getting tough for the bay area. Theres where they are. One on folsom street, oakland and pittsburg. Target has a lot of stores around the country and a lot in the bay area. Thats almost what makes this hurt even more is that theyre really pin pointing these areas that are struggling with crime especially on the retail level. And, once again, another body blow to the bay area economy. Target is not mincing words, right . Target said crime is killing business. Weve heard that from places like whole foods and other stores, and nordstroms, that specifically said its not the Business Climate although the Business Climate is struggling when it comes to malls and Retail Stores but they are saying its because of the safety of their customers and their staff, and thats why theyre pulling out. And that gets to the heart of the issue in the bay area, that has a Strong Economy and a lot of people working, et cetera, et cetera, but there are crime problems. And retail theft is a huge crime problem. Its hitting American Business to the tune of billions of dollars a year, and it is something you cannot refute, even local politician that is are really trying to fight against this admit there is a problem, and it hasnt gotten much better in the last whole year. I know you got to speak with the San Francisco supervisors, is that what he was telling you. This is aaron peskin. He represents a lot of frustrated voices. Here is what he had to say this afternoon. Theres no question that San Francisco and other urban areas have an organized retail theft problem that needs to be addressed by Law Enforcement. And there is no question that San Francisco needs to retain and recruit additional Law Enforcement officers. And thats why this hurts, audrey, because the stores are saying its not being addressed fast enough, so were going to take care of it on our own and protect those who work for us and protect those who shop with us and just leave town. Wow, okay. Scott, thanks so much. You bet. We do have our Jodi Hernandez talking to shoppers in pittsburg about targets closing, and shes going to have our full report at 5 30. Thank you for that preview. Appreciate it. Okay, well, this story comes at the same time our Response Team is looking into stores using technology to fight back against retail crime. We showed you this before. A Grocery Store in petaluma let us see how new ai is watching. Its actually 36 security cameras around the clock, the unblinking computer looks for telltale signs that someone is sealing. Chris chmura even tests out the technology, and youre going to want to watch his story at 11 00. Well show you what happened when the computer tried to catch chris in the act. All right, it is a case that hasnt been solved for nearly 40 years, but today investigators released more details on the arrest of a man accused of killing a child in solano county. So back in 1987, 6yearold Jeremy Stoner was kidnapped near his home in vallejo. He was found dead days later. Prosecutors charged shawn melton. He was tried twice but never convicted and died as the only suspect. But last year investigators retested dna from stoners autopsy and not only did it lead to the arrest of a new suspect, fred cain iii, it proved meltons innocence. He died without being able to be here to know hes exonerated. I think its really important that we are exonerating him here today, and the importance of dna in exonerating him. Cant bring jeremy back. Its absolutely horrible what the family has gone through for the last 37 years, but hopefully this will bring a slight bit of comfort. Cain was arrested in oregon. He is expected to arrive here in the next few days to face charges. Big Name Challenger entered the race for San Francisco mayor today, daniel lurie, billionaire philanthropist and heir to the levis fortune. He announced his candidacy at a kickoff event in the Potrero Hills enabled. He has run a highprofile Community Improvement organization for more than 15 years. During his Campaign Kickoff event here, he did criticize mayor london breeds response to the citys fentanyl epidemic and what he called a delay in dealing with the citys homeless encampments. He also pledged to hire more Police Officers if elected. Lurie says its time to bring an outside perspective to city hall. People are tired of the politics of the day where people are just finger pointing and making excuses. They want things done, and i will get things done. Lurie becomes the second challenger to mayor london breed. Current district 11 announced his intentions to run earlier this summer. The looming Government Shutdown this weekend is expected to have a wideranging impact. It would Close National parks in our area and could impact San Franciscos fleet week. The marquee event is set to sail in San Francisco. Ian cull talked about the fallout for potential businesses. What are you learning . Whats the outlook here . There is significant concern about how the shutdown would affect fleet week. No hard and fast answers here, but we do know the weeklong event was canceled ten years ago for the same reason, from the parade of ships to the navy blue angels, all it have is now in jeopardy. While the navy says the ships will arrive, a shutdown would mean no public boat tours and the angels wouldnt fly, and that would hurt the bottom line of local businesses like r. J. s market off the embarcadero. The general manager there says fleet week crowds bring in an extra 10 to 20 in business every day of the event. It would be devastating with covid and now the economy that would hurt a lot of people, and it would hurt its a domino effect. It hurts the hotels, the restaurant industry, the starbucks guys, it hurts us, all the little guys. Theres a lot of people up in the air right now. Obviously it will impact event staffers, the staff members, right . What are they telling you. For now they say theyre still moving full steam ahead, excited about it. They also warn that they will not know the full effect of the Government Shutdown until after it happens, and thats if it actually happens. They released a statement saying San Francisco fleet week is standing by to take guidance from the navy and other military partners. Currently our staff are continuing, planning as usual for the greatest fleet week ever. Well make adjustments as needed as we receive guidance, and the executive director expects it to come from the military tomorrow. Well dig deeper into his comments at 6 00. Thank you for that preview. See you at 6 00. Where do we stand with the Government Shutdown looming . Time is running out obviously before saturdays deadline, and House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy finds himself in a tough spot, as you can imagine, between hardright republicans unwilling to vote and democrats who want him out of a leadership role. Shreks swamp available on airbnb, shakira facing tax evasion, alicia keys trademarks welcome back. New data is out showing the impacts of Climate Change on some of the coldest places on the planet, sea ice regions in the arctic and antarctica. Meteorologist rob mayeda took a closer look at the numbers for us. Rob, its really eye opening when we look at antarctica. Jumping off the charts when we look at some of those numbers, first the arctic did drop to its sixth lowest and within the last 17 years this is the lowest in the area. The yellow outline versus where it is today, the sixth lowest in 45 years, at the more extreme end of the scale, you see the reduction away from those averages. The lowest in 45 years and the first time its been below 14 million square miles, literally off the charts this is this year. The average is up here in the gray bar. More of these shifting below that average but this year especially has gone well below that average as the egss and the air warm up. People wonder why, why do you think this trend is increasing . Part is tied to fossil fuel emissions, trapping heat around the planet. It does tie into a positive feedback loop. When you see the decline in the sea ice, this is like what we refer to as the earths ability to reflect away that incoming sun light. When you look at the sea ice to where it used to be versus where it is now, more of that sun light now is warming the land masses, warming the oceans, so that attacks inland and tide water glaciers which leads us into that cycle of increased warming with warming oceans and longer melt periods. Its happening more frequently and more extreme moving through the next couple of decades. Were talking about sea ice loft far away from the bay area but probably has an impact here. And its the key driver of sea level rise. Living in a coastal and bay climate is important. That is one of the driving factors. Green land, too, another region losing a lot of sea ice, leads to that rise in sea levels and as the processes continue, San Francisco will see a threefoot rise. Every day becomes like a king tide and you begin to see king tides even higher than that. Goodness. Okay. Eye opening for sure. Rob, thanks so much. Its been three years since the california Climate Action core launched. As a part of the states comprehensive strategy to address the crisis, volunteers along with the Governors Office created the countrys first state level corps. Why . To empower everyone concerned about the impacts of Climate Change to take meaningful action. Thousands of volunteers have been working since 2020. Last week President Biden announced 20,000 Young Americans will train several more states launching a Climate Action corps modeling the work california started. The long shot of this is that those 20,000 will not just get supported while theyre doing this work. Theyll have the job training they need. Theyll be eligible to jump into the workforce. But if they want to go to college, were talking about grants of up to 7,000.
