Common sense media tracked the android phones of about 200 kids ages 11 to 17 to see what theyre actually doing 97 of them use their phones during school hours. Almost 60 use them between midnight and 5 00 a. M. On School Nights heres the most striking headline more than half the kids got 237 notifications or more every day, with some receiving more than 4,500. Researchers say snapchat and discord, apps kids use for messaging sent the most notifications. The Business Model of social media platforms is to keep them on the platform so they can sell you ads. Its really an arms race for your attention reporter not all notifications are created equal. But like the kids in the study, her top social media app is tiktok what is it about tiktok that you love i think that feeling of indulgence when you are going through the video. Reporter i know a lot of moms if their kids sat down and told them what they were doing would have that feeling. Nbc news reached out to social Media Companies highlighted in the report tiktok says it sets a 60minute daily screen time limit on teen accounts under 18, but teens can enter a pass code to continue watching snapchat and discord pointed out that their notifications are similar to text alerts on snapchat users have to opt in for notifications both platforms say the number of notifications can be adjusted. Meta, instagram and facebooks Parent Company says it has tools specifically designed to help teens limit their time and minimize notifications teens are automatically sent a take a break message after a certain amount of time common sense did find many kids are trying to set limits she has a time limit on her favorite apps, but that doesnt always work. I know the pass word to it, so i can get by the limit. When you reach the limit, do you find yourself putting in the pass word . All the time. All the freaking time. Reporter why is that, do you think . Maybe, i think most of the time im not done watching a video and im really invested. Or i just want more time on my phone. Reporter she admits her understanding of social media is limited, making conversations about what apps her daughter uses challenging it is difficult because the new generation knows lots more about these cell phones than my generation does. Reporter many parents are with her on that so common sense is offering questions and talking points to help parents start the conversation, like which apps take upmost of their time . What draws them in and begin with admitting how you use your phone. Its really up to you as a parent to be having an on going and i would say a nonjudge mental discussion with your kids, but also talking about the positive things they can get from interaction on screens because that is the life kids are living i mean, theres so much there to unpack. This is the issue of our time in terms of teens and growing up and what these phones and devices are doing that their developing brains. Youve covered ate long time what stood out to you . The big thing what i learned is that every kid is different right . So every phone they looked at had a different pattern. Some kids are really into gaming some kids are really into social media. And other kids are putting i had no idea, putting their phone on all night long, like on youtube videos, for white noise. And they sleep through it but they have their phone on literally all night. The way that maybe we would put the tv on in the background, some people do. I feel like were all relying on companies to tell our kids to stop using the phone like they should put up an alert. But i feel like i mean, we talk about parents having discussions, meaningful discussions. I know maybe you feel like gave my kid the phone now its too late to say, wait, wait, wait, now you cant use that you cant use that. The mom in the piece, she doesnt understand the apps. So many parents dont understand what theyre doing here is what common sensz says, keep the phones out of the bedroom if you can make that a rule have a phone free dinner time or social time with your kids when ever you possibly can. And we have these questions, we mentioned in the piece, actual questions like a huge list of questions that parents can ask to start the conversation with their kids we put that up on today. Com because i know i learned from reading those actual questions that can prompt a really open conversation. Its really complicated because hoda is right. Hopefully the companies will do better and send the alerts and password protection. Its about parenting its a call to action for all of us its really hard because we ourselves are addicted to phones. How many notifications do we get in a day. Like hoda said the kids already have the phone how do you unring the bell the cat is out of the bag. We have to just get together with grace and humility and say, we have to try we have to try yeah. One thing is setting up Parental Controls before you even give the phone. I think thats a really good tip. I want to say, though, to their credit, in the study, most of the kids are trying. They know. This generation is much more savvy is what the researchers said they actually understand theyre using their phones too much. And theyre trying you saw armeda traying to put limits the oh thing were talking these kids have the smart phones the flip phone for safety. Those were a different issue we have little kids. I have a 9yearold girl my 6yearold, theyre begging me for a phone i joke about it now. Oh, when you get a job when youre 18 when youre 21 but pretty soon the drum beat will grow louder and louder and so much pressure to have these fifth, sixth grader. Once you give them the phone, its over. You lost them. We wonder, too. Theyre brains are developing until theyre in their 20s. Yeah. So we were just talking about a study on a childs brain because we dont know. Its almost like these are all experiments walking around, staring at phones and many years later were going to say, oh my gosh, what happened to these kids. When i first started reporting on this, probably ten years ago, there wasnt Much Research lately there has been a growing body of research to show, not all of it is conclusive, but there is an impact obviously yeah. With phone use, on mental health, on development. Its dra mat toik say this, i have this feeling, 10, 15 years science is going to show us, handing them phones, teenage girls, without access was like giving them a pack of cigarettes its as severe as that and consequential as that. No. Hour you slice them, thats it. You slice them. Once they cook, they soften up you like them meaty. I love them meaty. So you mind them and i will make stuffing. The stuffing is just ricotta grandma used to love ricotta she loved the fresh cheeses. It could be in dessert, main meal, anywhere. Appetizer you can eat it hot you can eat it room temperature. Great in mozzarella. Its one of the favorite in restaurants, too they love it they love it we sell as much as we have we put some egg, just one egg. Parsely. And this is a stuffing you can make manicota with that. Mix that well. Easy. How does it taste, guys youre eating it. Because the ricotta when it cooks it sort of solidifies. Vegetable canola. Is this a twice cooked situation. It is now you have to finish you have to make the sauce simple sauce you can use a jar sauce. But here we have plum tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, garlic, oil, basel and saute it in a pan and layer baking pan like this. I know you can make a sauce or sunday sauce and put a thousand things in it and braise for 18 hours or simple, easy tomato sauce the tomatoes are great now. This is the season garlic and oil, cut them in half, crush them. Sunday salsa. Okay. Youre doing okay i like this style. Chef, im here to help. All right what do you need . You want me to run your laundry over car around. After we finish, we clean up. Absolutely now take a little sauce and you saw how right there, you see it. So line a little of the sauce on top of it. Okay. Line it up here. This beautiful sauce here. You see how simple. You can make this in advance and bake it in the oven. Or you can make it in the pan like that. So take it in the pan. If you want to freeze or is that a terrible idea. Ricotta doesnt freeze well. Why did you say that . Is it terrible to do zucchini instead of eggplant . Why not. Some people, like me, like zucchini more than eggplant for some reason. You do. You do people are afraid of zucchini. We arent afraid.
