The u. S. Senate resumes this week, after a monthlong recess. And at the top of the agenda, avoiding a Government Shutdown. Were live in washington with the push to beat the looming deadline. This is today in the bay. Good morning to you on this wednesday. The team all back together this morning. Im marcus washington. Im laura garcia. Well check on the morning commute with mike in just a moment. But lets check the forecast with kari. It starts with jacket weather and ends up with short sleeve weather and its going to be really nice once again. As we take a look at santa rosa, starting out mostly cloudy, temperatures in the mid50s. Look at the trend as we go into late morning. Were going to see it clearing out and slowly warming up. Lets go around the bay with a live look outside in san jose, where its going to be a nice 84 degrees, in millbrae expect it to reach up to 72 degrees, in concord in the upper 80s. You can see the range in temperatures. This is about normal for this time of year around the bay area and well see this hang out with us for a little while longer, with a slight warmup for the weekend. Well talk about that in a few minutes. Mike, youre starting with the south bay commute. I am. We expect to see this, the first burst of traffic starting to ease up a little bit. By about 6 15, they should be back at speed. But as school returned, we see a different Traffic Volume kicking in, especially after 7 00 a. M. Even now, ive been watching for the last week and a half and were watching more slowing, more traffic feeding in and continuing toward morgan hill. That will continue to feed the south bay. We will see more traffic building, maybe a little earlier than in the summer months. Over here, southbound 880 still shows a slower drive past 238, toward a street. A couple of crashes, but they are recovering as the volume builds out of the rest of the east bay. Back to you. Thank you very much. Moving you forward on this coming fall season, which always brings a little bit more than just Pumpkin Spice lattes and cozy sweaters. It is also the time when we see the spread of respiratory bugs start to pick up. Right, when kids go back to school. Bob redell joins us now. Some experts argue now is the time to take action. Reporter correct. The American LungAssociation Says vaccination, marcus and laura, is especially important, especially for anyone with an underlying condition like asthma, copd, Heart Disease, diabetes or advanced age. 90 of people who ended up in the hospital last year had an underlying condition like one of those i just mentioned. Black americans are twice as likely to be hospitalized, and sadly, as many as 58,000 people died from the flu last year. The doctor youre about to hear from encourages getting all vaccines available, whether its the flu, covid or rsv shot. The public has this thought that vaccinations protect you from infections. They dont protect you from infections. Vaccinations protect you from severe disease. What people need to understand is that what causes severe disease, those symptoms, stuffy nose, achiness, cough, shortness of breath, its actually the immune systems response to the environment. The immune systems response to the presence of a virus. Reporter with regards to covid, fortunately most people will not die from that virus anymore, but there is a high risk of getting long covid, which can lead to months of not feeling well, brain fog, shortness of breath. Additionally, you can miss work or big events like a wedding as a result. Now, for the first time there will be three different vaccines against covid, rsv and the flu. If your last shot was four to six months ago, keep in mind your immunity could be waning, and that new covid booster, by the way, will likely be ready in a few weeks. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you. Continuing coverage this morning, classes are canceled today at oakland skyline high school. This is following gunfire that led to a lengthy campus lockdown yesterday. No one was injured and the district is telling us several people were later taken into custody. Students say the shots were fired near the school theatre. Parents are calling for metal detectors. The district so far not commenting on that, but says that it is now considering possible security enhancements. An unusual south bay crime ring cracked, according to san jose police. Seven people, including six juveniles, are now in custody, accused of using stolen cars for largescale smashandgrab robberies. Police say it happened at least two dozen times over the past half year. They released security video showing some cases targeting local smoke shops and say oftentimes the same type of cars are used, all late model kias or hyundais with a flaw allowing you to turn them on with nothing more than a usb cable. Months ago, those automakers created a free fix for the issue. An oakland restaurant is facing reality and going the extra mile following a recent string of car breakins. This weekend it opened a secured lot to protect customers cars. We told you about nidas backyard, theyve hired security and its already making a difference. And new overnight, a new round of Russian Missile strikes on kyiv and the southern ukrainian region of odesa. This happened ahead of the arrival of u. S. Secretary of state blinken. Now, ukraines military says at least one person died in the air strikes, and a river port sustained heavy damage. Blinkens visit this morning marks the first trip to kyiv by a top u. S. Official since ukraines counteroffensive began. And a live look at capitol hill. This is where the u. S. Senate is getting back to work. This is following the monthlong recess. House lawmakers return next week. Now, senators have their work cut out for them. Topping their agenda, avoiding a Government Shutdown before the end of the month. Senate leaders are already calling for action. Among them, minority leader mitch mcconnell, who will be back on the floor, despite recent health scares. Today in the bays brie jackson is live for us in washington tracking the latest developments. Good morning, brie. Reporter good morning, marcus. Yeah, there was a long list of things that lawmakers need to tackle now that theyre back on capitol hill. But that battle over funding the federal government comes as fema is running low on money following multiple natural disasters that weve seen so far. The senate is back in session, and lawmakers are already racing the clock. Democrats and republicans all must get on the same page about keeping the government open and avoiding a pointless shutdown. Reporter the u. S. Government will shut down at midnight on september 30th if Congress Fails to pass a spending bill. Divisions over Disaster Relief funding and aid for ukraine remain. We need to continue to invest in americas Defense Industrial base to support our partners in todays fight, and to help our forces deter tomorrows threats. Reporter some far right republicans are push to go attach conditions, including an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Another concern is Senate Minority leader Mitch Mcconnells health. He appeared to freeze for the second time in recent months. I assure you, it was a busy and productive month for me and my staff back in the commonwealth. Reporter a physician ruled out the possibility mcconnell experienced a stroke. Some Senate Republicans stood by their leader, others expressed doubt. That doesnt mean its incapacitating, doesnt mean he cant serve. It means that somebody ought to wake up and say, wow, this looks like a seizure. Lets just move forward hoping that, you know, hes in a good spot. Reporter the house does not return to capitol hill until next week, so Congress Must act fast to reach a deal to avoid a Government Shutdown. And the white house, as well as leaders of both chambers, have said that they would support a shortterm measure in order to keep the government running, marcus. Brie jackson in washington this morning, thank you. There is outage outrage from People Living in the east bay who have had a string of recent blackouts. Executives got an earful last night from people in danville frustrated by some 40 Power Outages since may. The utility blames it partly on recent work on two local substations which wrapped up last week and say power line safety settings designed to prevent fires are preventing electrical transmission. Town leaders say that doesnt cut it. All these technical things, people are, like, i really dont care, i just want my electricity. Local schools are feeling it as well. School leaders say the district lost thousands of dollars in food over the weekend due to the most recent string of outages. Its 6 09 on your wednesday morning. On the roadways, more traffic is building. The san jose slowing cleared right on schedule at the bottom of the screen. Ive circled slowing for 880 southbound approaching a street, slow again. Another tow truck has arrived. I think three were called to the scene of an earlier crash. Thats a bad time for slowing. The federal stipends going to hundreds of thousands of american daycares is running out this month. Now, we have talked about this before, but its worth sounding the alarm bell again. It was money offered through the covid era American Rescue plan, 25 billion to encourage daycares to stay open, keep daycare workers at work. That will not be renewed. In a perfect world, as we are more or less through covid, you dont need the money. But its turning out a lot of daycares are saying they do. Now, if youre at home thinking to yourself, im not getting daycare money from the government, it doesnt afghanistan me, its the daycare. So cali wilson said her husband laid it out, giving her ample time to prepare. Im putting in my two weeks notice. I will no longer be available for work on sundays 10 00 a. M. To 10 00 p. Hopefully you have time to get out and enjoy. It will be slightly warmer for the afternoon, and some spots like the south bay with milpitas reaching 86 degrees, and about the same in gilroy today. And for the east bay, vallejo reaching 77, and in fremont reaching 86 degrees, 88 in livermore. And then for the coast its another cool day with Half Moon Bay at 66, and 79 in redwood city. In San Francisco, downtown upper 60s, and then for the north bay were headed for the low 80s for napa up to santa rosa. Weve been keeping an eye on the tropics. Here is a look at a new system that has rapidly developed in the overnight hours. This is hurricane jova that will continue to move to the westnorthwest. This is expected to become a major category 4 hurricane, but the good news is it stays in the pacific and weakens. Were not expecting this to have an impact close to home. Were seeing the lows pass to the north of us that are giving the Pacific Northwest rain and cooler temperatures and helping to give us seasonable weather with the ocean breeze that keeps our temperatures moderated. In between those systems, our temperatures go up. Take a look at napa, going from low to mid80s to briefly hitting 90 degrees. Once we see the ocean breeze return, we go back to the upper 70s. Were seeing in our sevenday forecast there will be a warm weekend ahead, with upper 80s and low 90s inland. Not seeing a major spike in temperatures. San francisco is still going to be nice and cool, with low 70s there. Mike, something is going on for i580. We see this mild build at the toll plaza. We may have an issue. There is a disabled vehicle off the eastshore freeway, going away from the bay bridge and over toward 580 and the bridge itself. We saw the build on the span, and i didnt hear about any incidents. Still tracking why that tow truck did head west across the area. Were seeing a slow down jut recovery, the second crash being addressed. I believe the last of the trucks should be clearing from a street. The build for vasco, still under a half hour for the drive toward 580. Back to you. 6 22. So what can we expect as we step out this morning . More sunshine, cool weather, and then it warms up and it becomes a very pleasant afternoon. Some of the same weather we had some yesterday continues today. Lets get a live look outside in dublin right now, where we are seeing our temperatures in the upper 50s. Its a cool morning and whatever clouds that were seeing now will be clearing out by 8 00. The rest of the day is sunny and a gradual warming trend, as we keep it nice and mild with low 80s. There will be spots in the upper 80s in the trivalley into the interior east bay. But most of us in the 60s and 70s today. Well talk more about that and whats ahead. Mike takes us to the nimitz. You showed us 580, which was moving well. This is 880 southbound, volume is building heading to the south bay. This is when things start to build up. Nothing dramatic. Yesterday started in the late morning, really toward midmorning when things started to clear from an earlier crash. 880 southbound, another crash this morning, nothing like yesterdays crash around the mission boulevard transition. Northbound side, we do have a disabled vehicle. Thats about it. But there is reason for early slowing just south of the dumbarton bridge. Heading to the san mateo bridge, south 880 still slows past two earlier crashes. Activity in the slow lane. In the south bay, things are building once again. Developing at this hour, the search for a gunman who shot at a motorist either on or near interstate 280 in san bruno, where authorities eventually found the victim. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us near the scene. What have you learned . Reporter laura, the last update from the chp is that they really dont believe this is a situation involving a freeway shooting like weve seen in other parts around the bay area. They believe that this shooting was motivated by road rage. And maybe the reason they know that is because the victim in this one did survive, though he was shot twice. He was able to talk with officers from his hospital bed. Chp said the 50yearold man took two bullets, one to the shoulder, one to the back of his head near the Crystal Springs offramp in burlingame. The driver continued on 280 south where officers found him and his car. At this point, officers are still searching for the suspect that has commuters feeling unnerved. I feel like this has been happening a lot more, not necessarily in san bruno, but around the area. Ive heard in san mateo and just everywhere. Super concerning. I mean, i would say i still feel safe, but things are definitely taking a downturn. Reporter you might have been diverted off of 280 yesterday because several lanes were closed for that investigation, as officers canvassed the area for shell casings, stray bullets, any other evidence they might be able to find between burlingame and san bruno. Those lanes are once again open this morning, so no trouble for you if youre driving through. However, the chp says if you saw something in this area, they would like to talk to you. In san bruno, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Thanks for the latest, kris. Keeping an eye on two Bay Area Court hearings happening today. One of them on the peninsula involving a florida woman accused of practicing medicine without a license. Also killing a Kim Kardashian lookalike. Vivian gomez is due back in court today. Authorities say she flew to sfo in april and then in nearby burlingame performed an illegal silicone injection. Gomez faces charges, including involuntary manslaughter. Also in court, a south bay man accused in the deadly stabbing of his grandmother and 6yearold nephew. Authorities discovered the victim on a welfare check one month ago in their home on park more avenue in san jose. The suspect, Nathan Edwards addison, is in court today for a hearing on his mental health. Both sides claiming victory after a federal Appeals Court denied San Franciscos request to lift an injunction keeping city crews are clearing most homeless camps. The threejudge panel says the denial comes, in part, to both sides agreeing a person is not involuntarily homeless, even if they refuse shelter or access to shelter. The supervisor tells the chronicle the text of the decision will make it easier for the city to conduct encampment sweeps because the request does not apply to those refusing shelter or access to a bed or tent on the street. Homeless advocates say the city failed to meet the standards to lift the injunction and they fully expect any new plan to remain on hold. New information this morning about what led to the death of a man during Severe Weather at burning man. Event organizers first reported the death was not connected to the storms. Medical examiners identified that man as 32yearold leon reese from truckee and they believe he died from drug intoxication. Reese died last friday when organizers were First Closing the festival gates due to torrential rain and mud. Burning man grounds are still in the process of clearing out. The festival officials came to a close last night in what organizers called the burning of the temple of the heart. Many burners began their exodus well before that. So last night organizers tweeted wait times to leave were running about four hours, but thats down from about seven hours on monday. The rain and mud over the weekend led to a lot of delays, closures, and even a shelter in place, leaving many attendees to stay longer than anticipated. It turns out theyre leaving behind a whole lot. Check out the garbage piling up. Some of it caked in mud. Organizers always ask everyone to take all their belongings with them and, quote, leave no trace, but theres clearly nothing happening here. 6 37 on your wednesday morning. Taking a live look outside overlooking san jose. A clear look out there. Kari has a look at our temperatures today. How are we doing . It starts out nice and mild. Our usual start with some upper 50s and low 60s, and as you head out the door around the bay area, its about 59 degrees for much of the peninsula down to the south bay. Then we take a look at our school day forecast for morgan hill with a few clouds overhead. Dropoff time, it will be 56 degrees. By the time you pick them up, their jacket is hopefully in their backpack, if not on the playground. Were going to have warm temperatures. As we take a look around the bay, headed for 84 degrees in san jose, millbrae reaching 72 degrees for an afternoon high, mild there, but sunny and warm in concord with highs in the upper 80s. Well talk about whats ahead coming up. Mike says the commute is flowing. Its smooth. Its flowing slowing. The san mateo bridge, typical timing, about 6 30, 6 40, we see a big burst of traffic. Not a lot of brake lights, but a slow crawl across the bridge. That shows up for our slowing sensors as well and thats the typical build heading to the peninsula. Everything is right on pace. Lets get a look ahead, potentially through the south bay you might need to know about this. Over at s. A. P. Center, were looking toward the don juan concert tonight at 8 00 p. M. And that may mean traffic. As you get over to 87, we always warn about folks walking across the main roadways. Over here in palo alto, were looking at the inspection of some trail here, the trail will be affected, a lot of folks do head here for a midmorning walk. Some folks will see that just after youre watching this this morning. Toward the east bay, the coliseum, a midday game, 12 37 first pitch. We know after the game gets out that will mesh in with the evening commute. That may mean additional slowing for you. So prepare for that if youre traveling through oakland. Right now, out of oakland, a smooth drive. Just the traditional build at the bay bridge. Hov lanes move smoothly. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Slowing the effects of deforestation. This was something his helicopter was not designed to do. The rescue helicopter was not coming. Instead, lieutenant taylor received a direct order, return to base. Here is a live look outside in San Francisco, where now we can see the clouds are up a little bit higher. Thats still going to provide some cooling, even into the inland areas. Take a look at pleasant hill. As youre heading to work, its about 60 degrees. It clears out quickly, and throughout the day were enjoying sunshine and also mild weather. As we zoom into the south bay, here is a look at where were headed this afternoon. In East San Jose expect it to reach 87 degrees, and 85 in cupertino. For the east bay, were headed for 88 in some of our warmest spots like antioch and livermore, while in oakland the High Temperature will be 74 degrees. A breezy wind and reaching 64 in daly city, palo alto will see a high of 83 degrees, and mostly 60s for San Francisco, where we will see some sunshine, especially by the afternoon. This is a bad time to have the crash on 680 south heading toward the walnut creek interchange. Seeing the slower drive develop on 242. The crash 680 around main street, and also concern because in the crash detail, the first report says there are two vehicles involved, but someone is out of the car Walking Around in lanes and thats always a big concern because the crash is in the middle of south 680. If youve been to the area, you know there are a number of lanes and things get crowded as you head toward 24. Were tracking that. Right now this drive out of pittsburg on highway 4 down 680 off of 242, that drive time is now over 45 minutes, so that really ramped up over the last few minutes. Kirker pass and bailey still cutting through about 25 minutes. A shorter drive, but lots of surface street traffic. As we look over here, the rest of the east bay moves smoothly and out of the east bay and north bay, highway 37, the carquinez bridge move smoothly. We have a gradual slowdown, more of a build than weve seen through the summer months, from 580 and central down to the berkeley curve. Its a steady slower drive. Nothing dramatic. The rest of the east bay shows a smooth drive. 680, as weve been seeing, shows a slower drivethru pleasanton and toward sunol. There may be a fender bender toward the dublin interchange. Ill monitor that. The earlier crash, 880 southbound, still on the reports, we still have them on the shoulder blocking one slow lane. Nothing dramatic for the nimitz southbound. Look at the northbound routes through the south bay. North 101, north 87 and even 85 showing much more slowing than we typically see. But this is a wednesday. We expect a bigger commute and we do see the volume building. All morning ive been seeing slower drive sensors focused toward morgan hill. Back to you.
