Its time for all of us to leave work behind for a while and focus on what matters most and that includes my writers they write hundreds hundreds of jokes every day just to get to the 10 or 12 we use in the monologue. Seth last time i saw you was backstage at your broadway show, which was fantastic. Was that something looking back at it, can you believe now you did it was that ever something you thought you were going to do we did 236 of them, so, it took 14 months about five days of five nights a week. And i loved every night of it, you know it wasnt something i thought id do because it happened by accident you know, i was two weeks before president obama was leaving the white house, he asked me to come down and play so i said, i dont want to bring the band too much noise ill go down by myself with my Acoustic Guitar and ill read something from my book and ill sing a song. So thats i spent a couple of hours in my studio, and i worked up about 90 minutes of songs i went down and played in the east room and to just a couple hundred people but it was basically 90 minutes of the broadway play, you know and so he came up to me afterwards and he said, gee, you know, im glad you did that for us, but that should be a show. So i said, its good president ial advice, you know . [ laughter ] seth is it true he takes a cut . He took 15 . Unfortunately, it was true. Thats true. [ laughter ] seth i dont know if remember this. But we were lucky enough i brought my mom to see the show and we went backstage. And you were being very gracious with your time and i was cognizant of the fact you were a busy guy and wonderfully patty stepped in and said before they leave, bruce you have to take a picture with seths mom and this photo is celebrated in our house. [ laughter ] [ audience aws ] she looks great seth she looks wonderful, doesnt she look good . Fabulous. [ applause ] seth the thing the joke, my brother and i always say is weve never seen her look that happy in a picture with our dad. [ laughter ] ive never seen a photo of her where her eyes arent rolling. [ laughter ] this is this album, these are, obviously soul songs that mean something to you. Yeah. Just a lot of stuff that i liked. And it was during the lockdown, so i made a couple of records. Made a record called western stars and i made a film with it made a record called letter to you with the e street band and i made a film with that. cause you couldnt go out on the road so, still sitting there with no schedule in front of me. So i said, well, id like to let me do something ive never done before. Let me do something thats centered on my voice than just singing. From the greatest vocal music, in my opinion, of all time is gospel music and then soul music. All the singers came from the church so i just dug into my collection of my favorite singers jerry butler and david ruffin from the temptations, levi stubs from the four tops, william bell and i just started to go through music that i found that i had a good range for and fit my voice pretty well. And i made one record. I threw it out and then i finally focused on the soul the idea of making a cohesive soul music record and thats what we did i really i did it for myself. It was a lot of fun. I hope people enjoy it seth you know theres a great sam moore from sam and dave is on a couple of the songs i know youve sung with him in the past yeah. Seth on stage, in concert. You dont you have sort of given this gift to people. You know, you did a song with jack antonov obviously, you mean a lot to him. He gets to sing with you whats it like for you when you get to sing with somebody that meant a lot to you in your early days well, sam and dave were gigantic in my musical development, cause what most people dont understand, sam moore was an incredible band mate and i used to go see sam and dave when they played the satellite lounge in fort dix, new jersey, the fast lane in asbury park. These are 200, 300seat clubs. And this was in the late 70s. They were not i dont know if sam was speaking to dave at the time they werent getting along, but they were still incredible, you know so incredible that one night i stood in the back of a tiny club that was only half full. And i knew i was seeing some of the greatest music in the United States that very moment and i just cried, you know that just over how good they were just cause they were so good. And so ive known sam for about 30 years and weve sung together on a few things and hes a great guy, and probably our greatest living soul singer right now. Seth and is it a quick yes when you call up sam and say, do you want to be on the new album . Yes, sam is game to sing. He still loves singing hes 86 but still loves to sing. Seth you cant 86 when you listen to him. No, no, hes got his voice is sustained beautifully so hes wonderful. Seth and youre going back on tour as well . E street band seth e street band coming back on the road seth unbelievable. February 1st. [ cheers and applause seth now are you i you know, i am always every time ive been lucky enough to see you live, you know i cannot believe the energy that goes into that show, not just from you but from the entire e street band when you have february 1st in the future, are you already thinking about it . Are you thinking like, weve got to get into show shape right now . Yeah. Seth yeah . [ laughter ] its the thing with show shape is almost no matter what you do, you are still going to wake up the next morning after that first show feeling that youve been beaten with a baseball bat [ laughter ] every single thing is going to hurt you every muscle and bone in your body, your voice is going to feel like it will never sing again. And then you play the second night. Eh, its not so bad. [ laughter ] seth id have to think you got to just stick with it, right . Yeah, by the time youre three or four nights in, your body adapts and you get used to being constantly tired because you are. And so i live with fatigue for about a year and a half. Your immune system drops so you gotta get used to getting a little more regularly sick just because of the to the degree that youre pushing your body but its still the greatest [ bleep ] thing in the world [ cheers and applause seth i mean obviously, it sounds like you stayed busy and you realized that, you know, there was an opportunity with the pandemic to do other things. But i imagine from you the entire e street band from top to bottom, everybody must be just so excited to be well weve been six years. So its a long time. Seth yeah. And you know, i mean, it takes us two seconds to come back with each other but, yes, its been weve been off for a long time, so looking forward to it. Seth were going to take a quick commercial break but i you dont know this either, but i do want to tell you something. One more thing about my mom, which is we our first not our first dance, but the mother son dance at our wedding, she always wanted to do she wanted us to dance to a Bruce Springsteen song and so the band had to learn it. And the song was for you. From asbury, you know, from your first album. And my wife pointed out thats a crazy song that your mom wanted you to sing a song where the lyrics are, i came for you, for you. Shes like, why would you do that on a day where youre seriously here for me . [ laughter ] she goes, i think its a very aggressive song for your mom to have picked. Get this. Im the guy that wrote it. [ laughter ] so i know exactly what youre talking about, you know . Um, at first they didnt know any Bruce Springsteen music for a very, very, very long time seth how do you keep it from them strangers would come up to us, and i used to always have this thing id tell them id say, look, my job im barney for adults, all right . [ laughter ] and thats why people keep coming up to us. And then eventually, one of my children came home from like kindergarten and said, dad, what is tenth avenue freezeout . [ light laughter ] and i said, well, its a song that dad wrote. He said, play it for me. Got my guitar, and i started play it for real. [ laughter ] okay and i played him the song. And i said he got it. And then totally ignored that part of my life for most of the rest of my life. To this day, you know, they get a kick out of it sometimes, but for the most part, there is i always say no child wants to see 50,000 people cheer their parents. [ laughter ] you may want to see 50,000 people boo your parents. [ laughter ] i mean, that would be fun. That would be interesting. But who wants to see 50,000 people cheer their parents no kid does. No kid so we have a very peaceful coexistence where they pretend it never happened. [ laughter ] and, you know, they got they picked their own heroes. They dont need me so theyre doing fine. Seth there you go. But they have in you i know youre a grandfather congratulations. I am. Seth and this is you is this the son who just had yes, he is. Seth this is a lovely photo of you and your son. And i really keeping it together there, bruce. Seth ive had people looking down their nose recently at the marshmallows and the sweet potato, but youre holding firm on this . Totally seth all right, thats totally and canned cranberry sauce seth yeah, absolutely. [ cheers and applause i dont want to see i dont want to see any real cranberries in that cranberry sauce. [ laughter ] seth yeah. I want it coming out of the can, slice by slice, i can put it on my chicken seth absolutely. I feel like it was not a thing that was made for the organic version. No. Seth it was made to exist in a can and anything outside of it its a great day. We have a lot of fun usually family most of the family tries to get together and, you know, i mean, its this bizarre day. Its revolves around eating, you know its just kind of weird, you know [ laughter ] but its good. Seth youre also part of this tour is going internationally. Youre going to be in europe and i remember once, years and years ago, i saw you in holland. And i thought the most interesting thing and it must be fascinating for you is when people sing along to your songs which are, in many cases, these real slice of americana songs, with thick european accents. Oh, yeah. Seth and i remember you doing hungry heart and hearing a bunch of dutch people being like i got a wife and ki in Baltimore Jack [ laughter ] well, you know, first of all, its a shock to me that when i started scrubbing away in my little bedroom in freehold, that if i could ever imagine that thousands of miles away were people who do not speak or understand english are going to sing your music, and that youre going to go out and youre going to be greeted with that . I mean, its still completely it still blows my mind you know, its a wonderful thing. So we have incredible fans in europe where we have our biggest audience twothirds of our audience is in europe seth thats unbelievable much bigger than our audience in the United States seth thats its just theyre theyre a deeply involved and committed audience that is always there, year after year after year its pretty amazing. Can i just do an impression [ laughter ] you want to leave the conversation seth this is really you know, this is a triumphant this was Opening Night and yes, Opening Night of my girlfriends boyfriend. Seth and this is just me and john hodgman and were so proud of you and you just look great in this picture right there. This is [ laughter ] seth and for some reason, the photo is taken behind the photographers. [ laughter ] and youre just like teasing me and holding up my hands. This would never be used in any kind of magazine or anything who would ever use this photo . This is the fact that you used it here is an incredible breakthrough this is also you you know, i obviously came to see your show there were other people backstage who also came to see your show. Paul rudd came to see your show. And you have some people have sort of mentioned that you might look a little like paul rudd over the years people go, you look like paul rudd and sometimes dial it back and go, you look like paul rudd hes a little better looking. [ laughter ] you know what i mean and then they go, like, hes antman hasnt helped you know what i mean gotten hes buff, you know . Seth it could have gone either way you could have been antman. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Could have been me could have been him. Then a few years ago, i did my last show which is called the new one at the ahmanson theater in los angeles and a reviewer came and the reviewer wrote in the Los Angeles Times if this becomes a film, it must star paul rudd. Im an actor also [ laughter ] im i make film also. [ applause ] a cursory a cursory look at my wikipedia would tell you enough to know seth yeah. You know . Maybe dont mention another person who is roughly the same age and does the same thing for the same anyway seth now is this staged, this photo, or is this just proof of how much you look like paul rudd . [ light laughter ] isnt that nice seth thats a great photo. Our photographer amelio did that its a trick shot. Because i said to paul, he came to the show. And i go, i get this comparison all the time and i think it would be funny for my instagram if i said when im feeling down about myself, i imagine im paul rudd. And then, he was like, yeah. So we each stood in the same spot and then we photoshopped seth its very well done its fun, right seth its very well done so your show is so funny, which is what ive come to expect from you. Whats a little different is this show is about some serious bad health diagnoses youve got from the doctor. So when youre going through that, because from the very first time you see a doctor in the telling of the show, you have very funny observations is that happening in realtime . When youre getting bad news, are you also like, oh, but also, thats going to be fun to talk about and this over here . Everything in my life all the time is like, oh, that could be good. You know what i mean i fell down subway steps a few years ago and literally, i fell down the steps, i broke my shoulder im lying on the floor people are blowing past me like, you need help no good. [ laughter ] you know what i mean and youre laughing because youve been one of these pigs and i want you pigs to know, we on the floor are aware you do not wish to help but literally, im lying on the floor thinking, this could be pretty good material. You know what i mean im always thinking that and then with this show, i talk about it hi, i have type two diabetes i had Bladder Cancer i have a serious sleep walking disorder sometimes, im on the stage and i am thinking, like, wow, thats a lot of stuff. This guys got it rough. And then im like, this guy is me. [ laughter ] so, yeah, its a weird its kind of the inverse of that where sometimes im like, oh, maybe have i revealed too much, but then ultimately like people come to the show i talk about, like, the darkest things about my own experience, the saddest things i make jokes of them i talk about death its a lot about death and people feel better afterwards and, like, its honestly like performing all these years, my fifth show, its the one that makes me feel like like im doing a thing thats helping a little bit seth yeah. I felt that way. I mean, it is a again, i want to stress its very funny from start to finish, but there are moments where you sort of you talk to us about when you were taking stock of your life. I think its a really helpful thing to be there listening to i have more to ask you about, especially how the ymca has responded to the show so far oh yes. And not too give to much away from the show, but in the title, a pool is referenced and you started to going to the ymca to sort of help yourself get healthier. Yeah, and it was funny, because a few years ago, i was workshopping the show in new york and a lot of the administration of the ymca started coming to the show and i talk about how theres a lot of urine in the pool and, like thats like the main thing i talk about with the ymca literally, i say like there was a study where these scientists studied 200,000gallon pool and concluded that theres 20 gallons of pure urine in it and i said, its too much. [ laughter ] percentagewise, its not that much, but if you picture it, its a full tank of gas. Like thats a ford f150 full of urine. That will get you to pittsburgh. [ laughter ] and the ymca folks came to the show loved the show came back again. Theyre probably the most consistent repeat customers of the show which goes to show you, and im sure youve experienced this with this show and snl over the years, people like being made fun of. Seth yeah, well they just like hearing their own name. I think theyre just like, this is great. You like a lot of comedians because youve been workshopping this show for years during the pandemic a lot of avenues werent open obviously. Indoor spaces. What were some of the outdoor spaces you were lucky enough to perform at oh, my gosh i was in all kinds of yards and Hotel Parking lots at one point, there was a train at one point there was a racetrack in jersey where i think mulaney and i were doing a show one night john mulaney and it was actually the moment my agent Mike Berkowitz was there and watched my hour and he was like, i think this should be a broadway show. Which doesnt happen at the racetrack that often seth yeah. But the reason why was because because of the pandemic, everyone was inside for so long that a lot of the people at these shows werent even fans of me and john or even comedy they were just like somethings happening down the road you know what i mean and they just showed up and it was like kids were like 10, people were 90 and they all really liked this material my agent mike was like, i think this could appeal to a wide swath of people. And you even saw it last night our friend mike brought his kids who are 12 and 14. And they seemed to like the show seth it was fun. You know, over the course of the night, i really did enjoy looking around and i do think this is a very special week, right. A lot of families are together yeah. Seth and so, this was a thing they were confident that all ages would enjoy, and it seems like trying to be like, its fun for all ages. But it really was. And i think that was a cool thing about the show theres this funny thing. Like, last week, there was a kid in the third row and i go, like, hey, how old are you . Sometimes if someone is really young, i like to call out, like this might not be appropriate for you. Like my last show, i might the new one on netflix, in the taping, theres a young kid. I just want you to know that im not inappropriate. You just have bad parents. [ laughter ] seth yeah. So last week, there was a kid who was seemed really young, like in the third row. I go, how old are you . And he goes, 13 and i was just like, i dont think so. [ laughter ] then i was like, am i like carding this kid . Like he thinks im the bouncer at the comedy show like, get out of here youre seven years old get out of here. But, no, its not fun for all ages but truthfully, i think 12 and up is like its fun because its like it ends up its a conversation starter. Seth yeah. I think it really is and i also i think were about to embark on our time at thanksgiving which everybody could use, i think, a few conversation starters at thanksgiving and maybe some advice and you do some have very helpful advice for thanksgiving. Heres my advice. I was thinking about relationships and marriage and how i think this can apply to thanksgiving which is, i think in a marriage, and you ive been married 14 years and youve been about the same . Seth nine. Never mind. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] weve both been married about a decade seth yeah, yeah. And i found that in a marriage, you got to always remember that you cant predict the weather. You never know how its going to go always bring a raincoat and an umbrella because otherwise, youre just going to be like, im soaked why am i soaked . You know, and thats how i feel about thanksgiving youre going to be with your family some of them youre not going to like so bring an umbrella [ laughter ] an emotional umbrella. Seth not a physical one to stick them with. Like an emotional one. Thats my advice for thanksgiving seth thats very good advice other advice that i would give everybody is go see the show its wonderful its always so nice to have you here thank you so much.
