Good tuesday morning. Thank you so much for starting it with us. Im kira klapper. Im kris sanchez. Marcus and laura have the morning off. Mike, you get back from your Holiday Weekend just in time to deliver great news for viewers. I like to stay away from the bad news. Westbound interstate 80 between vallejo and hercules opened hours earlier than expected. Caltrans was pacing that work to be ready for this mornings commute. They did it in less time than that. Mike is going to talk about that in a few minutes. We want to check in with meteorologist kari hall, who is tracking the forecast as well. I am thoroughly enjoying it. I love this weather. It has been nice. I like the cooler weather, especially in the inland valleys. Were starting out clear and its foggy in San Francisco. So were going to go above the fog, taking a look from our sutro tower camera, to enjoy that sunrise this morning. Youre not seeing it much in the city right now. Its going to be partly to mostly cloudy to start out, and as we go throughout the day, that sunshine will be back for a little while before the fog rolls right back in. So taking a look at those temperatures, well reach into the upper 60s today, 75 in san mateo, and 77 in hayward. Moving over toward concord, it will be a little bit warmer, reaching 87 degrees and 85 today in morgan hill. So well get a look at whats ahead coming up in a few minutes. Mike, youve got the news thats probably not new to you if youre commuting. Not breaking news if youve been following this. The closure of i80, the carquinez bridge westbound from vallejo toward hercules reopened 12 hours early, as we just told you. They got done with the paving work. Youre going to notice better landscaping. They were able to take care of a number of things. This was traffic as it was reinstated across the span. This morning we see green sensors, a nice, easy drive. The slowing is on the approach, similar area as approaching 780, but this happens every week, same thing for highway 37, getting through vallejo and out of vallejo are an issue because of the volume of traffic. More slowing through richmond because of the volume of traffic and the bay bridge toll plaza with more slowing across the span. Nothing going on but volume. I keep talking about the volume of traffic but it will be lighter overall as we see folks returning from vacation. Were looking at the bay bridge where the backup had formed on schedule, and it is filling in lanes. Nothing dramatic or for the rest of the bay. Mild build for the trivalley. A little through hayward and union city. Developing this morning in oakland, an innocent bystander was shot while on a walk near snow park not far from lake merritt. So far, police are offering new details other than the woman was struck by a stray bullet. She is now in critical condition. Neighbors say they often saw her on the trail and now theyre worried about what this means for their community. The Community Seems welcoming so far. I know theres some dangerous stuff happening, but hopefully it doesnt continue to taint oakland as, like, a bad, dangerous place. We did ask opd if they have a description of the gunman, but they havent told us whether they have one yet. They do say this is an active investigation and theyre encouraging anyone who might have seen something to call opd. Were going to take you to berkeley now, where police are investigating a violent carjacking that happened outside alta bates campus on dwight way at shaddock. It happened just about 24 hours ago. The Armed Robbers targeted a 64yearold nurse. She was not injured but her car was later found abandoned in oakland. The exodus is now under way for attendees who really got more than they bargained for at this years burning man. Not in a good way. Late last night it came full circle for burners who waited out that muddy mess in the Black Rock Desert. [ cheers and applause ] there it goes, following a few challenging days. They finally celebrated the burning of the man, which had already been twice postponed. The gates in and out of black rock city are now open, but as today organizers are encouraging attendees to wait as long as they can to leave. Kris and kira, were here at what is known as the gate, the main entrance into and out of burning man. Less than 24 hours ago this road behind me was partially covered in mud. As you can see, thousands of festival goers are making their way out, leaving a burning man they wont soon forget. This is my camp. Weve been breaking down. The camp behind me is totally empty and gone. Some camps are still kind of doing business as usual, but most people are breaking down to some degree. Reporter authorities have identified that person who died, the next of kin has been notified. It could take weeks before a cause of death is known, but festival organizers and the Sheriffs Department say theres no connection it was connected to the weather. Thank you so much, liz. Developing this morning in washington, first lady dr. Jill biden has covid for the second time since her husband became president. Today in the bays brie jackson is live in d. C. Brie, a lot of people are getting covid again, this last surge. Whats the white house saying . Reporter yeah, thats right. Good morning, kris. So the white house says that the first ladys symptoms are mild and shell be staying at the biden home in delaware. President biden has tested negative. The president will continue to test regularly. No word if his travel schedule will be affected by this. Dr. Jill bidens diagnosis comes as new Research Reveals the latest covid mutation may be far less contagious than originally feared. The strain ba. 286 has popped up in 11 countries, including here in the u. S. It sparked worldwide fears because it looks radically different than any other variant weve seen so far. Many scientists even claim that this current strain could be just as bad as omicron, but two new studies suggest our immune systems are better able to fight this strain than other variants so far, meaning fewer infections and less hospitalizations. Now, the first lady first tested positive for covid19 back in 2021. At the time she was prescribed the antiviral paxlovid and told to stay away from others for five days. We know that those others include the president. A lot of families going through the same kind of temporary separation. Thank you, brie. It is almost 6 08 right now. Crews are now in the midst of a massive cleanup effort in the San Joaquin River delta after fuel spilled from a sinking tugboat. Its happening near Bethel Island in Contra Costa County. Coast guard teams responded yesterday morning and spent the whole day deploying containment booms. Its not clear how much fuel spilled, but for perspective, the tugboat that sank can hold 1,000 gallons of diesel and 600 gallons of oil at full capacity. Not good for the environment. Lets take a live look at San Francisco this morning, and a nice, cool blanket of air, clouds overhead. Its making things really comfortable, especially for sleeping. Its so funny, you love this cooldown, kari does, mike does. But i think a lot of people in San Francisco are sick of it by now. Thats true. I was talking about that with ginger. Head across the bay. Youll get some sunshine. Were going to see more of that sunny sky as we head into the afternoon and were keeping the comfortable weather. Take a look at san jose. Were starting out at 8 00 in the morning at 60 degrees and only headed up to about 80 today. Its going to be perfect for those outdoor activities, as people are heading back to work and school. 82 for a high today in dublin and oakland reaching 75. Well see some low 80s for much of the north bay. Novato reaching 82 degrees. And tomorrow may be even slightly cooler. You know what that means, San Francisco. Its not clear, but its moving and Holding Steady because the volume seems to be a bit lighter. We see your typical distribution for the slower spots, but theyre not as slow as they typically are at this time on a tuesday. Were looking at a smooth drive. Those who literally stuck it out in the mud are now joining those who decided to leave early from that weekend deluge of rain that left them stranded in the Black Rock Desert. Today in the bays bob redell is live for us this morning. We kind of saw for ourselves that getting out of there is still a big challenge, even though the gates opened more than 12 hours ago now. Reporter correct. Good morning. Yes, we have seen live pictures within the past few moments of a long line of vehicles trying to leave burning man. You might recall that those gates, as you mentioned, did open yesterday, but last night the organizers tweeted out, it is at least a seven hour wait trying to get out, so your better bet is to wait until today, which a number of people are clearing doing. Youll recall over the weekend around 70,000 socalled burners were told to shelter in place and conserve food and water as it began to rain. All right, were having a little trouble with bobs microphone, but as he said, people are finally able to make their way out. Usually it takes about eight hours to leave the Black Rock Desert. Because of the mess, it is taking people a lot longer. We did talk with a resident from sausalito named anastasia, who left yesterday as soon as the gates reopened. She said she went straight to the car wash, she was stuck on the road with thousands of burners for hours. They told us how to behave and there were rangers responsible for kind of keeping the spirit. It created a different kind of challenge and adventure, so i think our team was just ready to, like, stick it and go strong. We survived. We stayed positive. They kept talking about positivity. It makes a difference. Burners, some of them, told us they wanted to see the whole burning man sculpture, the centerpiece of the festival burn down, which is an annual ritual. It was supposed to happen last night. Others waiting for their gear to dry out. Law enforcement is still investigating, though, the death of one person. The cause is still under investigation. Organizers say its not related to the storm, but well have to wait and see what Law Enforcement finds out. Well hear from bob in our 7 00 hour. 6 35 now, and new overnight, Caltrain Service is expected to be back to normal this morning after a train struck and killed someone last night near the redwood city station. We dont have a lot of details on the person who died, but when we find out, well let you know. We have new video that shows Armed Robbers terrorizing cashiers at an oakland 7eleven near lake merritt. Police say the robbers got away with 10,000 in tobacco products. Yesterday police discovered a man deceased on the sidewalk just steps from that same store. Investigators are calling it a homicide and possible dumping of a body, but they do not believe it was tied to the robbery. In the aftermath of the maui firestorm, people in one neighborhood are praising the heroic action of one man who stopped to help even as he was stuck trying to evacuate. Its right there in the bushes. What . The fire, its in the bushes now, that man and his wife were leaving lahaina and they saw flames in front of a neighbors home, so the man jumped into action, using a hose to put out that fire, and that home was saved. The couple says they never received any official alerts about the fire. I havent personally heard of a single notification that anybody received in all of my social network period. Out of how many people do you think youve talked to . Hundreds. Now, the Emergency Response is still under investigation but the owner of the home that was saved said he only figured out what happened when he saw that video later on social media. He does say he plans to put that couple in his will. I love that. Here locally, a headsup for commuters in the north bay, beginning today crews begin work on a massive renovation project on highway 12. The hooker creek bridge is being replaced due to degradation and erosion from the creek water running below it. As a result, highway 12 between madrone will be closed. A similar project recently was completed on the nearby sonoma creek bridge. That replacement project is expected to last at least 30 days. A bit of a surprise for commuters who travel between vallejo and martinez, the caltrans shutdown of westbound interstate 80 wrapped 12 hours early. It was originally set to reopen this morning for the commute. Workers started repaving the road last thursday night. Caltrans says it knows the project caused inconveniences for many people over the long Holiday Weekend, but one spokesman called it shortterm pain for longterm gain. 12 hours early is great. Excellent. New this morning, good news in the north bay as well. Sonoma water districts two main reservoirs are at their highest combined storage levels since 1985. Two years ago lake mendocino and sonoma were barely half full. That, of course, changed after all of the rain we got in the winter. The Agency Points out the reservoirs are also at their highest storage levels ever for this time of year. Very good news. A live look outside now in san jose, where that cooler weather is still with us. Yesterday turned out to be quite lovely, a cool morning, we saw some sunshine. Lets check in with meteorologist kari hall to see what we will have today. A lot of people returning to real life today. Yes, back to work, back to school. Were keeping still that nice weather we had over the Holiday Weekend. That continues today. As we take a live look outside in oakland, its a partly cloudy to mostly cloudy start to the day and well see it clearing out around 9 00 to 10 00. Temperatures right now in the upper 50s, but we are going to head for some sunshine today, reaching 75 degrees, and in hayward expect a high of 77, and 84 in san martin. It will be about the same in santa rosa. Well get a look ahead in a few minutes. Mike, you see a delay coming into los gatos. We have northbound 17 coming into los gatos slow because of a crash. There are actually two separate crashes im hearing about, both involving a single car in the same area approaching that santa cruz offramp. It affects folks coming off the summit. Southbound hasnt seen any slowing, but it will be a distraction with the activity. Just a note if youre heading south down toward the santa cruz area. Meantime, the rest of the commute shows build around coleman and oakland road. Typical builds for the trivalley, slowing for 580 and 680 around the dublin interchange. Ill track that for incidents. We do know about this, coming up later today. 6 40, a game at the coliseum. When we have games in the evening hours, we tend to see slowing as you approach the offramps. A note for after work if youre working today. We see the same patterns we typically do, but a lighter volume overall. Thank you, mike. Making lifesaving schools more accessible in one community. You might be wondering why this is even an issue as you wake up. Its because dr. Jill biden, the first lady, tested positive like so many other people have. The difference is now the devices will be linked via gps technology. Theyll take the guesswork out of finding one and making sure theyre working properly. We on the back end will be able to tell where all the aeds are at any given time, make sure that they do selftests every day, theyll alert if theres an issue, if theres a battery or charge issue, well receive an alert. To continue educating the public, Campbell Police will work with the kyle j. Taylor foundation to host a free Heart Screening event next month. The Foundation Honors a West Valley College student who died unexpectedly at age 18 of sudden cardiac arrest.
