Westbound interstate 80 between vallejo and hercules actually reopened hours earlier than when caltrans anticipated the work to be done. First, meteorologist kari hall is tracking the forecast. Yesterday turned out to be quite a lovely day. It was nice, and its going to continue for the next few days, not many changes as we go into the rest of the week. So people are heading back to work, back to school. You can even see more cars out there in walnut creek. So as we are starting out, our temperatures are in the upper 50s. It is mostly clear and well see more sunshine today. Well be in the upper 60s by 10 00 and upper 70s by noon. The warming trend slows down as we go into the afternoon. So expect it to reach into the upper 80s in concord, while in napa today the High Temperature will reach 77 degrees, 80 in san jose, and low 80s for much of the north bay. Well talk about the rest of the week coming up. Mike, the traffic news is not breaking. Look at this right here, they just reopened i80 yesterday, in fact, so it was not 104 hours. I think it was closer to 96 hours. They laid down new concrete, did some landscaping work and major slowdowns for some folks coming from the north bay into the east bay in Contra Costa County for much of the weekend. But it cleared yesterday evening just about 5 00, between 4 00 and 5 00 yesterday, everything cleared up. We had a smooth drive across the carquinez bridge. Folks may have been jammed up at the benicia bridge after the reopening because they had plans to take the split and continued down, and this ended up being clear later in the evening yesterday. No problem this morning, a smooth drive, as well as the rest of Contra Costa County, despite a crash on the shoulder near alhambra. Theres a blip developing just past the toll plaza so ill doublecheck on that. Meanwhile, the rest of the bay moves smoothly. Fremont, we had a history there. Ill handled it over to you. The Community Seems welcoming so far, i know theres some dangerous stuff happening, but hopefully it doesnt continue to taint oakland as a bad, dangerous place. We did ask opd if they have a description of the gunman, but they havent told us if they have one yet. Police say this is an active investigation and they are encouraging anyone who might have seen something, anything, to call opd. To berkeley, police are investigating a violent carjacking that happened outside the campus on dwight way at shaddock. It happened just about 24 hours ago. The exodus is under way for people at burning man where the prolonged celebration finally culminated with the celebratory burning of the man. [ cheers and applause ] there he goes late last night. The festival finally came full circle for burners who waited out the rain and muddy mess in the black rock desert, following the few challenging days weve been reporting on. They finally celebrated the fiery event, which had already been twice postponed. Organizers are encouraging festival goers to wait until this morning to leave now that the main gates have reopened. But some did not wait around once the gates reopened yesterday. Traffic extended for hours into the night. This is my camp, weve been breaking down. The camp behind me is totally empty and gone. Some camps are still kind of doing business as usual, but most people are breaking down to some degree. Created a different kind of challenge and adventure, so i think our team was just ready to, like, stick it and go strong. We survived. We stayed positive. Good spirits. The strand ba. 286 has popped up in 11 countries, including here in the u. S. It sparked worldwide fears because it looks radically different than any other variant that weve seen. Many scientists even claim this current strain could be just as bad as omicron. But two new studies suggest our immune systems are actually better able to fight this strain than any other variant seen so far, meaning fewer infections and less hospitalizations. Now, the first lady tested positive for covid back in 2021, at the time she was prescribed the antiviral paxlovid and told to stay away from others for at least five days, kris. And that part hasnt changed, that advice. Thank you so much, brie. Crews are in the midst of a massive cleanup effort in the San Joaquin River delta after fuel spilled from a sinking tugboat. Its happening near Bethel Island in Contra Costa County. Coast guard teams responded yesterday morning and spent the day deploying containment booms. Its not clear how much fuel spilled, but for perspective, the tugboat that sank can hold 1,000 gallons of diesel and 600 gallons of oil at full capacity. It is 5 07 now. As we look live outside in san jose, it is really clear out there this morning. It felt almost like fall. Yes, its been nice, and especially with the breeze picking up in the afternoon to the evening hours and the temperature starts to drop. We were only in the 70s yesterday for much of the afternoon in san jose, and weve seen 70s and low 80s elsewhere. Take a look at morgan hill and the trend well have for the morning. Light jacket weather. Were in the mid50s right now, and its mostly clear. Morgan hill will be one of the warmer spots, reaching into the mid80s, while oakland today will see a high of 75. Novato reaching 82 and San Francisco in the upper 60s. Thanks so much. Just shy of 5 17 right now. New this morning, new findings on who benefits most from the highest earning college degrees, and some may argue its the same old story. Nearly four in five graduates with the most lucrative and high paying bachelors degrees are men, according to researchers at bank rate. They find those majoring in the female dominated fields earn significantly less than fields that are male dominated. Despite recent progress in closing the gender gap. The top 20 lucrative degrees are in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, all have an average salary above 100,000. I see you looking at that. I have a senior. Luckily, shes interested in math. And shes good at math. Shes good at math. Same as her little sister. Im just thinking about your daughters. Time is definitely on the side of the Rolling Stones, yes, it is. I added that in. Taylor swift, beyonce. Dial back the clock. Is it going to be stones or jimmy doing the stones . He can do it. He really can. Kari hall for us with a look at the weather, now that everyone is kind of headed back to work. Back to school, back to work. Its time to get back to business. And were going to keep the same nice weather we had over the weekend. Were taking a look at a cloudy start in San Francisco this morning. Were going to see the fog kind of linger throughout much of the morning and temperatures Holding Steady in the upper 50s now. Well be in the low 60s as we go throughout the rest of today. And then as we take a look at our valley temperatures, just maybe a degree or two warmer than it was yesterday. Martinez headed for 83 degrees and well see in Mountain View a high of 77 degrees. Well bring it up, also, a couple of degrees for san jose, up to 80 degrees, and 84 in san martin and in los gatos. About the same in santa rosa as well. Now, tomorrow were going to see temperatures cooling off a bit for those inland valleys, so temperatures still going up and down, a stronger breeze and more fog at the coastline will help keep temperatures a little lower than we usually see for early september. And then on thursday its really not changing that much. Lets take a look at livermore and see whats ahead. So were going to have some mild weather through at least the first part of the weekend. By sunday, we do see it getting just a couple of degrees warmer, but thats not a drastic change there, and well bring it back down for the middle to end of next week. So taking a look at our sevenday forecast, we are going to see temperatures up just a bit for the weekend, but overall its not too much of a major change. It looks pretty good as we settle into this pattern for also San Francisco as well. Mike, youve been tracking a crash. Whats the update . The good news, no injuries, and its off to the right shoulder. As youre traveling south, countercommute on 101, a crash is over on the shoulder, activity heading that way. The morning commute will build in about 10 to 15 minutes, but we might see a slower build because some folks might be out of town. There was a report of a wrongway driver, which raises all sorts of alerts, but everything is moving smoothly on the shoulder. Still some conversation going on with whoever was driving that vehicle on south 85. Over here, a crash highway 4, still on the grid at alhambra. It should be cleared at any second. But there is a bay area sports dynasty that people might not know about. Yeah, espn just recognized them in a list of the best High School Football teams of all time. Pressure, throws. Not going to get in. Dropped at the 3. Ranked at the very top ever, concords de la salle team, the spartans that year beat long beach on national tv in what was called the game of the century, and it was all in the midst of a record 151 game winning streak from 1992 to 2004. Maurice jones drew starred on that team and he is now back at de la salle coaching after a nice career in the nfl. I think they got it right. I think it was the best team ever. I think they changed the landscape of High School Football. That was when teams started traveling all over the place, first time seeing number one versus number two nationally televised. The 2003 team also ranked on the list. They are 15th. And the spartans may have missed out on more because the author says he followed a strict, quote, two teams per school limit. So maybe they could have gotten more. Those tickets are more affordable than the niners and that game is probably more exciting. Oh. Next, top stories were following, include a welcome surprise for bay area commuters. Things are all clear on the carquinez bridge ahead of the caltrans deadline, well ahead of it, too. The difference you can expect if your commute takes you down interstate 80 from the north bay. Thousands of people will begin their exodus from the muddy mess that was burning man. We are going to take a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall, tracking what we can expect as were inching toward true fall. We had nice, cool weather over the weekend and it will continue to be at least a couple of degrees below what we typically see for early september. In oakland, it is a busy start to this Tuesday Morning and were seeing a few clouds here and there. Its right now 60 degrees. We may come down another degree or two as we go into the next few hours, but eventually it will clear out and shape up to be a really nice day as we head for the mid70s. Well see a couple of degrees warmer in spots like livermore reaching 85 degrees, 84 in santa rosa, Half Moon Bay will reach into the mid60s. Mike says so far its a light tuesday commute. It is, and we expect that coming off of a holiday weekend. Were looking at the crash at the bottom of the screen that is over on the shoulder, south 101, that should be cleared about the grid any second. Mild slowing for 84. Northbound 101 should change from green to yellow just above where it says san jose, just north of the 280 680 interchange. Emeryville, weve been seeing more traffic. No slowing on the sensors, but for traffic and taillights. More headlights at the bay bridge toll plaza. Those lights should turn on at about 5 35 or 5 40. New overnight, Caltrain Service is expected to be back to normal after a train struck and killed someone last night near the redwood city station. So far, we dont have a lot of details. A exodus is officially under way at burning man. Those who literally stuck it out in the mud are joining those who decided to leave early after a weekend deluge of rain that left them stranded in the black rock desert. Today in the bays bob redell is live for us. I actually had to ask our producers, because i thought this exodus was last night, but getting out of there is still a big challenge this morning. Reporter correct. So yesterday the organizers of burning man, kira and kris, they were starting to let people leave. Last night the organizers tweeted out the wait time to get out of the burning man camp area was seven hours and counting. That was last night, so theyre urging people or recommending them to wait until later last night or until tomorrow, which a lot of people are going to be doing. Around 70,000 socalled burners were told to shelter in place over the weekend and conserve food and water as it began to rain and turn the desert camp sites into a muddy mess. The ground has started to dry out and driving is now possible, but getting out is slow. Sausalito resident anastasia left yesterday, as soon as the gates reopened. She went straight to a car wash after being stuck on the road with thousands of burners for hours. They told us how to behave and there were people responsible for keeping the spirit. It created a different kind of challenge and adventure, so i think our team was just ready to, like, stick it and go strong. We survived. We stayed positive. Reporter some burners told us that they wanted to see the burning man sculpture burn down, an annual ritual. That happened last night. It had been postponed twice because of the mud and rain. Others are waiting for their gear to dry out before they leave. Also, Law Enforcement is still investigating the death of one festival goer who was a 32yearold man. The cause is under investigation, but organizers say it was not storm related. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you very much, bob. Investigators are calling it a homicide and possible dumping of a body, but its not believed to be tied to that robbery. A gradual warming trend for us as we keep some of the same weather weve had recently. Dublin reaching 82, 82 in novato and 75 in san mateo, and well see a high of 89 in fairfield. Well talk about the rest of the week coming up. Mike, youve got an update on the big weekend closure. It might not be a surprise, but it was at the time when caltrans shut down westbound interstate 80, it wrapped up 12 hours early. It was set to wrap up early this morning at 5 00 a. M. Workers started repaving the road last thursday night, closed that westbound bridge for most of the weekend. Drivers say they do notice the difference. The road seems less lumpy, not as lumpy as it was before. There seemed like some potholes and they fixed them. I havent been here in a long time and i noticed it was smoother, so i could drive faster. Dont tell chp. Well take less lumpy and faster. Caltrans says it knows the project caused inconveniences for many people over the weekend, but one spokesman called it shortterm pain for longterm gain. Lets get out to the roadways. We do have a little slowing approaching the carquinez bridge, but that is standard. We also see the bridge out of vallejo for westbound 37. Now, after it reopened early, you would think everything would be great, but yesterday evening after the reopening we did see later in the evening a lot of traffic to the benicia bridge because i think folks had prepared for the closure and planned their route down here. Thank you for following us on friday and thursday. Follow us online as well because i did tweet out that information or xd it out. A little bit of slowing for the bay bridge. Were seeing more traffic approaching the toll plaza as the metering lights are activated at this time pretty much every day. We see that even after a threeday holiday.
