This is a live update for you this morning on the interstate 80 closure and the time line on when things are expected to reopen. Plus, the exodus out of burning man in the nevada desert is still mired in mud. But we now know when tens of thousands of people may be able to leave black rock city. Thanks for joining us on this labor day monday. Im kris sanchez. Marcus and laura are off. Today may not be quite the holiday some bay area travelers had in mind as they had to labor through an extended shutdown on interstate 80 impacting one of the bay areas major arteries. Bob redell is live for us with an update from caltrans. Is the road going to reopen for tomorrows postlabor day commute . Reporter according to caltrans, yes, it is. Good morning to you, kris. I did speak with caltrans a couple of hours ago, and they tell us that westbound 80 that is shut down right now at 780 and vallejo to carquinez behind me to highway 4 in hercules will reopen at 5 00 Tuesday Morning in time for workers trying to get back to sf for their jobs after this long Labor Day Holiday weekend. This is new video this morning of the roughly threemile stretch of westbound 80 that was shut down. Workers right now, theyre waiting for the concrete to finish curing, but you can see the concrete is poured, and then they will restripe the roads. Thursday night workers took out the old road all the way down to the dirt, according to caltrans, and installed new rebar, concrete, and asphalt. Caltrans says this facelift will add 40 years to the life span of this stretch of westbound 80. The state chose to shut down the road over labor day because data showed westbound traffic is traditionally lighter over this holiday. We wanted to compress over 106 nightly work in four days. So, again, we thank the motorists and the public for being so patient with us. This is just a shortterm pain for a longterm gain. Reporter the owner of the dead fish restaurant not far from where im standing in crockett, is not happy about the closure of westbound 80. Labor day weekend is his third or fourth busiest weekend of the year. He says it will be his worst since customers from the east canceled or didnt show up for their reservations. Caltrans says businesses that do lose money directly from this work can apply for relief from the state, which is what the gm of dead fish says hell most likely do. Now, during the shutdown, caltrans says they also used this as an opportunity to fix the lights on the suspension bridge behind me since that was part of the shutdown. And they also did some repaving and vegetation work further north along 80 in vallejo. Live in crockett, bob redell, nbc bay area news. Good they were able to keep their promise and open on time. Thanks, bob. New this midday, tens of thousands of people at the burning manifest value are being asked to stay put in the muddy desert just a little bit longer. Nbc bay areas Ginger Conejero saab joins us now. Ginger, some people stim trying to leave despite the fact they were asked to stay. Thats right, kris. If everything were to have stayed on schedule, today would have been the official end to burning man, the eightday festival in black rock city. Now, because of the rains and their impact on the festival, the official exodus will start at noon, but organizers are asking burners to push delaying or push their departure until tomorrow. Thats because organizers say the roads remain too muddy and wet for a large number of vehicles to safely navigate out of the event. As mentioned, the exodus will start in less than an hour at noon today. Some people are taking that suggestion, while others seen here are opting to end their burning man experience, walking out of black rock city. They are not alone. Some people left as early as this weekend after forecasted rains made for muddy and wet conditions throughout the desert. You can see just how sticky the mud is. It was on vehicles, tires, and on this mans shoes. There was a shelterinplace order over the weekend, and people were instructed not to drive their vehicles simply because of how thick the mud is. The main gates in and out of black rock city were closed and things were hold including the symbolic burning of the man and the temple which had been rituals to the annual event. That beenburning is set for ton. We spoke with the ceo of burning man, marianne goodell, yesterday, and she says the current weather conditions will not end the event, including burning the man in the temple. Its a matter of how many people will be around to see it when it happens. This is not ending the burning man event by any stretch. It just makes us stronger. Its kind of part of the challenge and the ritual to actually, you know, be in the middle of extreme weather and work our way out of it gracefully. While patience and grace is needed for getting out of those conditions, the president has been briefed on the situation in the desert. The National Guard is not coming in so far, but according to goodell, they have been among the Government Agencies standing by to offer support. So, kris, you know, the focus really today and possibly tomorrow and the next coming days will be the exodus, which stretches for miles and miles. On a good day. Right. Under normal circumstances. Because the road is a twolane road. So, you know, goodell, the ceo, is looking to make that process just as smooth given the added challenge. This is a lot of people, and this does, like, sprout out of the desert, so these folks kind of prepared for it, just not for this length of time. For folks who have not been, show them the lay of the land. A lot of people may be asking how big is black rock city pop heres some perspective for you. Its four square miles. Its kind of made of semicircles here, and this is the innermost street. Its also called the esplanade. Thats pla nad to the man, which is part of the ritual burning, at about 2,500 feet, which is less than half a mile, but it extend far beyond that inner circle. It continues on. So people are kind of walking out. But its not a short walk. No. The next biggest city is gurlock. Its several miles to get out to the gates that were closed, and then if you take a look at where black rock city is in relation to the next city, thats more than 15 miles. People have been walking to the gates, hoping to get a ride. Some people, even celebrities like chris rock, theyve been able to hitch a ride back to the city. No ones going to say no to that. If youre a regular person, you might not get there. Right. There are not a lot of vehicles going in to take them back. Thats right. Theyve been sheltering in place. Like the ceo says, this is kind of part of the, you know, the overall spirit of burning man, which is a community of people who are really there to help each other. So that is really put to the test and giving extra challenges this year. They wont forget this one. No, they wont. Absolutely not. All right. We wont either. Ill tell you, the Car Wash Companies are very excited about this. Lets go to meteorologist kari hall to continue our team coverage. They knew this was coming, they just didnt know how bad it was going to be. Yeah. Its hard to tell what the impacts will be, but they knew that there would be some storms coming through, and were seeing this surge of monsoonal moisture being drawn in by an upperlevel low. Look how active it was over the past 24 hours with all of the rain and storms that moved through here in the last few loops. We can see in the past few hours it has been fairly quiet as that storm continues to move away. But one more loop of that, you can see just how much heavy rain they had as it continued to move on in. And once again, that storm system is moving away. So lets talk about temperature conditions and what well see overhead in the sky. Were going to see some clearing for today. Temperatures, though, only in the low 70s. So that doesnt give the mud that much of a chance to really dry out. Gradually, it will be warming up over the next few days into the upper 70s, and then low 80s on wednesday. This may take a few days to really get this under way. But well look at some much Better Weather conditions over the next few days. We have some sad neutral zone news from the rock world this morning. Staying in pennsylvania, President Biden celebrated labor day with the men and women of labor, speaking with Union Workers in philadelphia. Scott mcgrew says union votes are crucial to the president s reelection efforts. Both democrats and republicans are battling for that working man and working womans vote. A few years ago, a union member would have been guaranteed to vote democratic and his boss probably voted republican. But that trend has really disappeared. Biden has positioned himself as a proUnion President. He claims the most proUnion President in history. He met with workers this morning as part of the labor day celebration. Let me tell you what were celebrating. Were celebrating jobs, goodpaying job, jobs you can raise a family on, union jobs. Wall street didnt build america. The middle class built america. And unions built the middle class. Now, President Biden himself has not been in a union as far as we can find. He went straight into law out of college and law school. But other president s certainly have been. Ronald reagan was Union President as head of the Screen Actors Guild in the late 40s and early 50s. Unions have had a brilliant resurgence lately. U. P. S. Workers just negotiated a new contract. That means drivers will earn 175,000 in pay and benefits a few years from now. Even starbucks locations are unionizing. 20 an hour for baristas and more dependable schedules as well. The big challenge for President Biden, both in that speech in pennsylvania and in general, is convincing americans the economy is getting better, because it is by all standard metrics, but americans dont seem to feel that way. A brandnew wall street journal poll, for instance, finds 75 of americans think inflation is getting worse. In fact, kris, its getting better. Lowest rate in two years. It kind of is whatever you feel like at home, right. September is childhood bay area family is hoping to ne make a difference in the lives of young patients. According to the natna pediatric cancer foundation, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. Cancer is now the number cause of death by dea among children. But because of their experience, hiss parents started the enzo and me pediatric cancer foundation. The goal is to fund pediatric Cancer Research to find better treatments and cures for children. His parents tell us how hard that experience was. For most parents, this is one of their worst night mares, so lets come together and try to eliminate that from the reality. Annually, about 11. 5 million years of life is lost to pediatric cancer. Children are losing 11. 5 million years of life. Taking a live look outside right now, a little more foggy in the city, a little more sunny in san jose, and mild and nice, kind of all the way around, kari. That fog is helping to cool us off. We get that breeze coming off of the fog. I know, its been really harsh in San Francisco, but the rest of us are enjoying the cooler weather. Were also getting more sunshine today as we take a live look outside in dublin where we are continuing to see that sun right now. And over the weekend, we had a partly to mostly cloudy sky, that fog lingering in San Francisco. Busy travel day. Weve been watching those flights coming in and out, and we know a lot of people are traveling this afternoon. San jose is bright and sunny. Its beautiful. The temperature is at a comfortable 73 degrees. Were only headed for the upper 70s today, so even with the sunshine, were keeping the cool weather like what we had over the weekend, and there will only be some slight warming as we go through the next few days. Take a look at our temperatures for this afternoon. Cupertino reaching up to 80 degrees. Well see some low 80s in morgan hill, and East San Jose reaching 81 degrees. Some mid80s over toward concord, 85 in antioch, and martinez will see a high of 81 degrees. Hayward in the upper 70s. Now, were going to see also mid to upper 70s up and down the peninsula, but where that fog is still continuing to stay overhead, its in the 60s. Were seeing that in San Francisco as well. Downtown starting to see some peaks of sunshine there. And well reach up to 66 degrees anywhere from 83 in santa rosa to 73 in mill valley. Along the coastline, were still seeing temperatures there in the upper 50s. So, as we go through the week, there will be a slight warming trend ahead. But for the weekend, we are going to see this trough approaching the pacific northwest. That could bring them some more rain but also bring back some cooler temperatures for the bay area starting early next week. So, well see a spike in temperatures for some of our inland areas as we look at walnut creek. But for the most part we stay in the 80s, going from low 80s through friday to upper 80s for the weekend. Then were going back down, so not any major changes here, just a gradual warming trend as we go through the weekend. If youre looking forward to some warm erp weather, youll get that saturday and sunday. San francisco also will warm up just a little bit going from upper 60s to a partly cloudy sky and highs in the mid70s for the weekend. Kris . Thank you, kari.
