Youre looking right now at saddle rack road. That is also shut down. Parts of park moore are shut down. In other words, a giant square has been closed off as Police Officers tell us theyre trying to locate and arrest a suspect in that shooting that you referred to. Also a lot of traffic in this area is being diverted. A lot of people trying to get not only to work but even to their homes have been told they just cant do it. Heres the latest that we heard from the sjpd sergeant just a few minutes ago. We believe the suspect is contained, however, the suspect is not yet in custody. This is an active scene. We are asking media, anybody thats in the area, please avoid the area, including helicopters, vehicle traffic, pedestrian traffic. Reporter thats the message. We are quite a distance away from this part of the scene. They are directing a lot of traffic away from the san carlos, meridian, park moor area. A large square has been cordoned off as Police Officers continue to try to get this suspect in custody. That is the latest we know from here. Laura and kris, back to you in the studio. Thank you very much, scott. You heard stay away from that area. The area were talking about, lets check in with mike inouye right now. Youre monitoring what were seeing. All that activity around that pretty big complex around oconnor park. For folks unfamiliar with the exact neighborhood, let me show you silicon valley, the san jose section. Were looking at north 87. Your eye gets drawn to that section of red. Thats where theyre doing roadwork continuing from yesterday. We draw your attention a little farther north of 280. This is where the Police Activity is. Youll notice san carlos, major roadway, scott mentioned park moor as well. The entire stretch of smer not accessible between those two to major roadways. It includes a car park and businesses in the area. Were looking at race street as one option, lincoln over here. I talked to folks at palermo, a restaurant in the area, and they suggest coming over from bird or the barack obama boulevard side, because there is a lot of activity on auzerais avenue. We talked about the freeway as well. For a period of time i believe they had the offramp at meridian closed down. They talked about reopening that, but race street has remained clear. The traffic has kind of cleared up again, so i think everything is accessible. Again, once you get to park moor, you have to find a detour around meridian and auzerais avenue. Back to you. From san jose to the city by the bay this morning, it is the first day back at school for an estimated 50,000 students who attend san jose unified schools rather San Francisco unified schools. Its not just the students who are looking to hit the ground running. Nbc bay areas Ginger Conejero saab joining us live at cobb elementary in San Francisco, where the superintendent spoke this morning. Ginger, the district is trying to address some really key issues this school year. Reporter thats right, laura and kris. Superintendent matt wayne was here at cobb elementary a few hours ago to welcome students and their families as well as teachers back into the classrooms this new school year. He did speak primarily about addressing the Teacher Shortage at San Francisco schools. There are currently about 3,500 teachers across sfusd. They need more, and thats why superintendent wayne, in his second year in the position, said the district is currently onboarding new staff and teachers even as the school year starts. He says he spent much of last year listening and learning about what the district needs. This time around hes ready to focus on getting teachers in and keeping them in San Francisco classrooms. When you work in San Francisco, theres great professional development opportunities. The you work in some of our schools, theres additional sty stipends and great partnerships. Thats a bit of a pitch that the district is making. Sfusd has been clowe lowe cal art shortages. The district has filled about 76 of over 600 classroom vacancies. That number has gone up. Last year it filled 464 classroom vacancies, and the year before there were about 350 vacancies. But parents that we spoke this morning here at cobb say the districts problems have not trickled down to affect their sons experience at school. Honestly at cobb i didnt get a sense of that type of feel because theres always someone available to step in and to guide my kids. Reporter thats been the sentiment, parents happy to send their kids back to school this morning, also feeling hopeful that the district can address certain problems, much like the Teacher Shortage, also improving math and english literacy skills, and also improving that system that pays teachers. That was an issue. He has confidence that the right changes are being made. In San Francisco, Ginger Conejero saab, nbc bay area news. I think we can all agree we just want our kids to excel. Yeah, yeah. Get the teachers paid on time. Thank you, ginger. Everybody having kind of a similar forecast for back to school. Very nice and sunny. The kids are out there on the playground, having a good time. I love that. And were going to have more great weather for getting outside, especially in San Francisco, as temperatures stay cool as a layer of fog drapes over the golden gate bridge. Elsewhere, it is mostly sunny and 70 degrees. Well see temperatures here Holding Steady as we go into the rest of the afternoon. And also a breezy wind. So lets talk about whats next. For the valleys, the high heat continues, well see temperatures today headed for the upper 90s and a few spots reaching 100 degrees. There will also continue to be an elevated fire danger due to the threat of some lightning strikes. Well see that potential as we go into the rest of today. But temperatures are already heating up in the valleys, and we could possibly see some storms, so ill be tracking that in the forecast. Well talk more about it coming up in a few minutes. Thank you very much. So, with the start of school in San Francisco, a really terrible way to remind folks to Pay Attention on the roads. Last night a4yearold little girl was in a stroller when she and her father were hit by an suv in a crosswalk near oracle park. It was at 4th and king streets. The little girl did not survive. Her father was taken to the hospital with lifethreatening injuries. The driver is cooperating with the investigation. And new at 11 00, police on the peninsula are in t middle of a death investigation. Investigators say the body of a man was found along waverly street in downtown palo alto. We know that discovery was made around 6 30 this morning. We are still waiting hours later for word on what led to his death. Now to the very latest on the recovery in maui. More than 106 people are now confirmed dead. So far, crews have looked through 25 of the burned areas. Hundreds are still missing. Officials expect to identify up to 20 new victims a day. At least three lawsuits have been filed against Hawaiian Electric aling turning off the power lines could have saved lives. The utility is far is not commenting. Coroners, pathologists, an xray, Lab Technicians are on the island now assisting. Loved ones are being asked to get their cheeks swabbed for dna, then those samples would be compared to the dna of the victim. For many families, the wait for answers is agonizing. I love you, grandma. I hope youre at peace. We go slow, methodical, were thorough, and then respectful. These are somebodys family. Very heartbreaking. This midday, the lahaina bypass road reopened to all motorists. Access is limited for west maui residents first, then First Responders and maui employees. For many, its the first time theyre going home in a week. The mayor urges everyone to use caution while returning. We have a list of verified organizations that are collecting donations on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. Just click on the how to help maui link. Youll find it there in our trending bar. President biden and first lady dr. Jill biden will meet with survivors and First Responders in maui on monday. Some of the president s political opponents have criticized biden for what they claim is a delay in his response. We asked scott mcgrew to take a deeper look. The good news is we have all kinds of Historical Records on what president s do and when they do it. As far as hawaii, remember, a lot of the federal governments response there is entirely automatic. Washington learned a lot from the double disaster of katrina, both the disastrous floods and the disastrous response. The mayor of lahaina declared a local emergency at 9 45 on a tuesday night, the First Federal disaster workers arriving about 18 hours later. The maui fire occurred while biden was on vacation with his family in delaware. But the white house says he stayed in contact with fema and other agencies. Biden declared maui a disaster and thus eligible for federal aid less than 48 hours after the height of the fire. Looking back at past disasters and past president s, thats about standard. President trump declared a disaster in puerto rico seven days after Hurricane Maria made landfall there, declared the campfire that destroyed paradise a disaster four days later. President obama declared Hurricane Sandy a disaster eight days after, and baton rouge flooding three days after. You do have to be a little careful judging the time line of hurricane relief. Do you start from the first moment it makes landfall or the middle or when the storm finally clears . If its when the storm finally clears, then the past two president s disaster declarations were before the whole thing was even over. President s of any party have to be careful about when they show up to a disaster or a tragedy as well. Video here of the bidens visiting the site of that collapsed condominium in florida in 2021. A significant number of First Responders have to be reassigned to the president instead of helping people that are there to help. And every president is aware of that. But not going into a disaster is also a mistake. President george bush said allowing this photograph of him flying over new orleans after Hurricane Katrina was one of the biggest mistakes of his presidency. He had been on vacation but cut it short to return to washington with a flyover on the way. President bush wrote in his book, decision points, that photo of me hovering over the damage suggested i was detached from the suffering on the ground. That was not how i felt. But once that impression was formed, i couldnt change it. We mentioned biden was on vacation at the time of the maui fire. Bush, katrina, obama was on vacation at the time of the baton rouge disaster. I showed you just a few of the disasters president s have to deal with. There are hundreds of them. According to fema, there had been 34 major disaster declarations so far this year, 34. Were 32 weeks into the year, so looking at the data and the calendar, its less about vacations, more about the sheer number of disasters president s deal with. Back to you. Which is very tragic. Thank you, scott. We continue to follow breaking news out of downtown san jose this midday. A Police Officer was shot while responding to a family disturbance. We dont know that officers condition at this hour. Heres some live pictures from the scene this morning. Well continue to bring you breaking news updates during this newscast as soon as they come in. Happening now, crews in the northern most part of the state have their hands full. Evacuations are in effect as the head fire continues to burn in siskiyou county. This is time lapse video from a wildfire camera of the fire that started around 4 30 yesterday afternoon south of the community of hamburg. Several shelters are now open as a result of those evacuations. At least 2,700 acres have scorched, but the good news is the rate of speed has decreased. No word yet on any containment. This morning, another wildfire, the ash fire, broke out caused by lightning, and that triggered an evacuation and has burned nearly 15 acres in the long gulch area overnight also in siskiyou county. No word on containment. In just a few moments one of the east bay wine regions will have the blessings of the greats in hopes for a good harvest. Its looking like it should be a good year thanks to recent winter rains. As bob redell reports, the good news will come as the first harvest since the drought actually ended. Well have more on that coming up a little bit later in our evening newscast as well. That blessing is going to get under way at the bottom of the hour. Meteorologist kari hall, though, is showing us what the weather will be like in livermore all day. Yeah. We are going to see temperature s still remaining hot for livermore, and over the next several days well see temperatures dropping for the next several days. It looks really nice but also lower humidity, which is key, and how it feels out there. Weve had some really muggy conditions as this area of low pressure is spinning off the coast and its drawing in monsoon moisture that has triggered showers and thunderstorms over the sierra for the past few days. Weve also seen some lightning strikes, which enhances our fire danger, and that is of high concern over these next several days. As we take a look at whats happening in the tropics, there are three Tropical Storms in the pacific, and now we have Tropical Storm hillary. This is what were going to be talking a lot about over the next few days. Right now it has just developed, and will most likely strengthen over the next few days as it moves to the westnorthwest. This is expected to become a major category 3 hurricane as it moves closer to baja, california. But then as it moves over some cooler water, well most likely weaken, but look at the track. It will be moving up baja, california, and possibly into Southern California for the weekend. If that does happen, we are expecting the potential of some of the remnants of that and the rain spreading into Southern California, and once again, the thunderstorm chances will continue. But also the models bring that farther north into the bay area with the potential of some rain as we go toward next late monday night into tuesday. And then it moves to the north by wednesday. So, this could be a rainmaker and possibly even produce some lightning. We could see more rain for today. This is a look at the Short Term Forecast after those storms moved through the sierra, across the sacramento valley. We could see quite a bit of that in the north bay as we go toward early tomorrow morning. So a lot of concerns here as we also deal with some hot temperatures and more of the cooler weather moving in for the weekend. Back to you guys. All right. Were excited for cooler weather. Back to nbc bay areas bob redell. Were talking about the east bay wine regions for the annual blessing of the grapes. Reporter brent amos, the winemaker here in livermore, when i asked what this years harvest looks like, he says the 2023 vintage is looking very promising for a number of reasons. Our historic winter storms saturated the soils. The vines grew a little sooner as a result, which means healthier plants. He didnt have to water until a good two to three months later than usual with about 20 to 30 less water overall. There is a little less fruit on the vines he says this year because of the mild spring and a couple of rainy periods in the middle of the bloom. The upside, those looser clusters of grapes are less prone to mold and mildew. Over the past several years, the drought has forced winemakers like brent to harvest the food earlier to avoid the heat. Brent anticipates this years harvest to start in two to three weeks from now, which historically is along a more normal time frame. Its that goldilocks thing. It has to be just right. So far this year has been just right. We have the mild start, but then weve had these heat spells that havent been extreme for the most part. Theyve been early enough in the development of the grapes that we really havent seen much in the way of sunburn or really any negative issues from that. They just serve to cause minor stress on the vines, but in a good way. Reporter brent expects to harvest the last of his 17 varietials in late october, early november, some of which you can see on this driveby shot on his winery. He points out a lot can happen between now and then, but in terms of weather, he anticipates more of the same. Were talking about mini heat waves. A rabbi, a presbyterian pastor, will be blessing the grapes in about 20 to 30 minutes from now at the las positas vineyards. Log onto the website at lvwyandotte organize. In livermore, bob redell, nbc bay area news. Happening now, for the first time the california state park system is getting a little bigger. Castle rock state park in the Santa Cruz Mountains is expanding. The state park system purchased Six Properties from a nonprofit, expanding the park by 222 acres. That includes forest lands and ridge tops as well as a recently built a entranceway and main hub for the park. That deal worth 4 million.
