Good afternoon. Im gia vang. Welcome to nbc bay area news at forge 8 30. We are talking to realtors with an update on the wildfires in hawaii also. We are also checking other stories this friday. This includes getting the green light for driverless taxes operating 24 7 it in San Francisco. Whats next . Were digging into the details. Also, outside lands is here. Whats different . Who is headlining . Our robert handa is at Golden Gate Park. Well check in with him in the crowds. Whats next and whats in store for this weekend . We are tracking a warmup so you know what to expect. Lets begin with hawaii, where the death toll is now at 89 after wildfires ravaged parts of maui. That number, expected to rise, as rescuers continue their work are dozens more have been hurt. Tourists are being encouraged to leave the island as fires continue to burn. Yesterday, nearly 15,000 tourists left malley. Take a look at this video. Heres the harbor in the hard hit town of lahaina, an area dense with and cultural history. Lahaina, once the capital of the hawaiian, before the Hawaiian Islands became a state. The fire is now 80 contained, but much of the town has been reduced to ash. Among the places destroyed, a bar called the dirty is among the burning buildings that you see right here. The gofundme has been set up to support the staff there. One of the coowners is from the central valley. From the sky, you can see how widespread the devastation is in lahaina. Buildings, raised. Cars, abandoned. In addition to locals, thousands of tourists are also leaving the island with a stream of buses taking them to the maui airport to find flight. We were able to see, up close, firsthand, the devastation, everything we saw the day before was so lush and beautiful. It is just completely gone now. People from robmayeda were allowed to return to check on their homes today. Still, sitting at the heart of the town, a charred banyan tree. Its been there for 150 years. Some are hopeful of the fact that it is still standing, a symbol of the resilience of the town. And we have just got an updated number, 67. That is how many have died in the fires in malley so far. Again, thats just coming into our newsroom with 57 people now dead. For those people coming home after the fires, the losses go so much deeper than just the buildings. Nbcs mcgill aligarh spoke with one lahaina family. They were in the bay area when the fire swept through town. They stayed safe, their daughter says, by getting in the ocean. They fear their dog was packed killed in the fire. They had anything packed up, and when the fire came, they lost everything. Also, his fathers ashes. I just wanted a picture of it, and i have something. Its the only thing i have now. Wildfire is the second deadliest in modern u. S. History at this point, its hard to tell how many people are still missing. Even as the fires near containment, recovery is just starting. In the process, that can take years. As we have seen the devastating images come in from maui, many of us are asking how can i help. That is workable realtors in the bay area thought too, but theyre already jumping into action. They got practice too. Damian trujillo is working on this for us. Damian, what are the local Real Estate Agents doing . Reporter yeah. They have a vast Network Across the country. There, together with the foundation. This is Keller Williams realty. They are taking proceeds to sell homes here, in Silicon Valley and across the country to benefit the victims of the disaster there, in hawaii. Its kind of personal for them. One of the Kayla Williams agents, alan constantino, is missing. And so, a lot of agents right now are donating part of the proceeds to fit those victims, the survivors and their families for those who may have died in this disaster there, in malley, and these agents are contributing, not only, sometimes part of the proceeds, but sometimes that, therefore commission from selling homes. So, were talking thousands of dollars here have raised, theyre hoping to raise, with millions of dollars for that. Again, this vast network of Kayla Williams agents, fanned out from kostocoast and on the island. Damian, you were saying, they jumped into action before when . Reporter i was at the Hurricane Harbor in houston, and those agents were there. They actually had a convention scheduled there, in houston, but right after the hurricanes arrived, those agents were headed there for the convention, detoured, then started helping out, so they had about 25,000 agents on the ground there, with sledgehammers, doing some Interpretation Services for some of the victims there. And so, they have that vast experience. Again, that foundation, the endowment they have, nationally, it helps them kornet these efforts. Theyre used to shipping out the truckload and a School Supplies and food for these disaster areas. But the Hawaiian Islands, they have to figure out how theyre going to get those supplies and that food, either by cargo, cargo ships, or by air. Its not as easy as they had it before. All right, damian, you never think about realtors jumping into action in Something Like this, but theres always a connection. Thank you so much, damian. Well watch for your full story at 6 00. Reporter thank you. On her website, we booked a guide on how you can help with donations. Go to nbcbayarea. Com, click on maui donations with the trending bar for the list of verified organizations. They have got the green light, but when will they take it . Two bay area Vehicle Companies have been granted permission to have a driverless taxi service in San Francisco. The California PublicUtilities Commission made the move yesterday, allowing crews and taxis to operate 24 7 across the county and part of san mateo. The ruling takes effect immediately, but its not clear when the companies will roll out expanded services. Currently, the Companys Services are invite only. The rides are free. Neither company has responded to our request for more information on a wider rollout. We talked to had mixed reactions to the robo taxi expansion. I think im more on board with it. I think its an improvement. Terrifying. Yeah. The other night, i was driving in the fog, and didnt really know what to do. San francisco Public Safety agencies also raised concerns about dozens of reports of driverless vehicles freezing and blocking fire trucks and ambulances. Also, driving through close streets into active crime scenes. The companies have defended their vehicles, saying, with moons millions of miles long, they have had relatively few issues. Okay, theres a big Party Happening on Golden Gate Park this weekend outside land, that for the 15th year. Talking music, food, plenty of people. Joined the Music Festival that is already underway with robert handa. Robert, what is the live like out there right now . Reporter well, right now i would say, the vibe is kind of energetically mellow. The rubino took the stage a little while ago, and she has kind of a soft sound. That sort of set the tone for the atmosphere here. People didnt really start arriving here, though, until late or midafternoon. So, really, things are just kind of getting started, but so far, weve seen it be pretty active. People are walking around, talking, and everybody seems to be having a good time. I asked a few youngsters how things work, and they said, its dope. So, i assume thats either a discussion of the atmosphere or maybe one of the many reasons why it is mellow right now. , robert, any problems or issues for people going to the festival but they should know about . Reporter well, you know, when things are so mellow or the like this, things are, you know, pretty quiet right now. Still, pretty early. Dont forget, Kendrick Lamarr doesnt even take the stage until about 8 45. Right now, people are just sort of getting, you know, some food, drink, visiting and things like that. So far, no real big problems. Securitys been kind of tight, but not impotently so. People have to go through a metal detector. Theyre restricting large backpacks, but they are allowing people to bring in small, transparent bags. So, you can also tell, by the eating areas, things are going very smoothly there, and thats usually a pretty good indication about the atmosphere, how smoothly things are going. All right. You mentioned an lamarr, helena tonight. Anyone else . No . Reporter theyre excited to see a lot of different artists. I can say,i know all the different artistpeople tell me about, but certainly, Kendrick Lamarr is a big attraction for tonight. Monterey and foo fighters, headliners, and other groups are the headliners for this weekend. Everybody im talking to seems pretty excited. One thing you have to remember, though, they have multiple stages, and sometimes, the artists play simultaneously. Sometimes, you have to choose whether you want to watch one artist for the entire performance or whether you want to try to jump and move around at the different stages. So, pretty much, they have to make that decision, but otherwise, everybody is pretty excited. Im mostly excited about the foo fighters. Then again, im the only person here, in the sports garden. Robert handa, thank you for that dope report from outside San Francisco. We were going to check back in with you at 6 00. All right. Did you can tell us more, cynthia. So many people are going to outside lands. One of the biggest festivals in the year for San Francisco. Looking at San Francisco behind us, little bit of a cluster . Yeah. It is our summer, for anybody new to town, and you not only have to worry about what robert was saying about, you know, going across the stages, wearing comfortable shoes, but also bringing a jacket, because these conditions only get cooler as the night goes on. Well go, 65 are now in the city, and a very busy night, as we can tell, over the traffic over the golden gate bridge. What else is busy this afternoon . Satellite and radar. So, listen up. As this swarms over the sierra, if you have any plans to head to yosemite, lake tahoe this weekend, these conditions will continue, and well keep satellite and radar up to see whats going on. Right now, seeing some of those storms moving over bear valley, kirkwood, heading closer to south lake tahoe. Some of that hail, right there, that you see in purple, also reaching about 1 2 an inch. Be careful with the conditions if you are driving up to 80, 50, as they can change very quickly. I want to do staying put in san jose with the jazz festival going on with biddable conditions will continue as we go through the afternoon. Typical start to our saturday with the fog that should push on , closer, hugging the coastline through the middle parts of our saturday, and we are getting ready for a very warm weekend ahead. Tomorrow, well do upper66 in downtown San Francisco and the 90s come onto the board like over in concord and fairfield, 92 there, and some 90s through the santa clara valley. As we enter the peak of hurricane season, forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now say theres even a greater chance of an active atlantic hurricane season. Back with us now, cynthia, are there connections between our changing planet that you are watching, and what this may mean now for community up and down the east coast . Lets start with this, gia. We have been telling you, el nino is starting to strengthen as we go on into the fall. I would normally tell you that this will bring down hurricane activity for the eastern u. S. , but were in a complete different field now because of Climate Change. So, some of the hottest Ocean Temperatures right now, cracking 100 degrees in south florida. Historically, our oceans have stored about 90 of the extra heat that, and have added to the Planning System because of Greenhouse Gases since the industrial revolution. Now, this could be a massive fuel for hurricanes. You are changing the physics. Hurricanes need warm ocean water to feed their engine, if you will. They evaporate water off the surface of the ocean when the ocean is hotter, when the scene surface is hotter. You can evaporate the water with a long greater ease. The end result is that were changing the speed limit on hurricanes. So, Climate Change is not letting these storms, gia,. Morant, push the deadly storm surge further inland, and intensify those storms rather quickly, like in the case of hurricane in almost a year ago now. Okay. Are there any storms forming right now . Whats the update for noaa . Nothing in the next seven days for the atlantic, but noaa come up with this update the other day , including the fact is you just discussed. Theyre predicting 6 to 11 hurricanes with 2 to 5 of them becoming a category 3 or stronger. Cynthia, anything else forecasters are watching . What should people prepare for this season . This season, it will be a very important thing, gia, for everyone to Pay Attention to the forecast, to evacuation orders, and even more so, some scientists tell us that the hurricane warning can be making people go to bed they can, its a category wanted, flooding, not too bad, but they could be waking up to a category 4 or 5 in the morning the way these storms are evolving. The behavior of these are different than sort of the people who have gone through 20 or 30. Thank you for keeping us updated on that, cinthia pimentel. 8, back well on long island s sure. You can see rescuers trying to figure out what killed it. This whale is the third well to wash ashore in long island this year. Getting a College Education at an affordable price.
