As students head back to school for the start of another year, many districts nationwide are scrambling to find qualified teachers for every classroom some 51,000 teachers quit in may of this year impacting kids and their families to get a letter from the school, he doesnt have a teacher. But he may have one before school starts. Reporter teachers qualified in math, science and special ed are in short supply. Were losing 300,000 teachers a year, and were not getting enough people coming in to the profession. Reporter concerns over School Safety are a factor, along with postpandemic burnout. They were part of the worlds first domino heart transplant in infants at New York Presbyterian Hospital we are going to meet these precious babies and their parents in just a moment but first, how one heart became gold for these two families. We found out i was pregnant for the first time it was so exciting we were overjoyed. Reporter samantha and andres of roosevelt, new jersey, were college sweethearts. Sam a teacher and andres a Police Officer were preparing for the birth of their first daughter brooklyn when doctors noticed something wrong with the babys heart. It was very heart hard you just dont like imagine that when you find out that youre pregnant reporter baby brooklyn had an extremely rare condition. Instead of two heart valves pumping blood to the rest of the body, she only had one they learned that after brooklyns birth she would need a partial heart transplant to survive. It was terrifying they gave us a lot of information that we didnt quite understand reporter and one state away, in new york, nicole, herself a nurse, and james were doting parents with their newborn baby girl mia when at ten days old, nicole noticed something off. She did this fast breathing i saw it and i couldnt unsee it i kept telling her to doctor after doctor everyone kept telling me it was fine. Reporter nicole knew something was not fine. Call it a mothers intuition soon her fears were confirmed. I realized she was in heart failure. Reporter they were told mia would also need a heart transplant to survive. Each baby found their way into the care of new york presbyterian Morgan Stanley childrens hospital, where they were both in a race against time for a new heart. Having days where you feel like it is never going to come, it is the hardest part. Reporter seven months into ththe agonizining wait, ththe fy got ththe call thehey were waiag for. The timing was actually very serendipitous. I received a donor offer for mia at about 2 00 in the morning. I was sleeping. Nicole grabs me like, james, james, dr. Lee is on the phone we found a donor. Reporter in an incredible twist, the family also got a call. The next morning we reviewed brooklyns case. I said im doing a heart transplant tonight and mias valves actually work perfectly maybe we should do this as a domino. Reporter a heart domino had never been done before in babies. A domino transplant is when one patient is both the recipient of a transplant and also becomes the donor for another transplant. Reporter so mia would get a heart transplant allowing her to donate the working valve from her old heart to brooklyn. They did not hesitate to offer mias valves to brooklyn a few hours later, we were on the turnpike heading up north and she was in surgery reporter after nine grueling hours, the medical team had great news both surgeries were a success. The momoment they t told us the heart t was implananted in r and was working g well, i dont think therere is really anything that can describe it. Reporter soon the families were a able to meeeet. Words cantt explain h how we apprereciate you u guys. Reporter a and two weeeeks later, both mia and brooklyn were headed home mia with a new heart, and brooklyn with a part of mias. If you think about it, they got such incredible news and they were able to think of somebody else in that moment with. One of the nurses said that brooklyn will always have a piece of mias heart it makes it feel like we waited so long for a reason my goodness so joining us now, we have nicole and james, along with baby mia, who has been talking all morning. And thank you all for coming in this morning so is this the first time you guys have been reunited in a while then yes, yes. How does it feel . I feel like you guys are forever family, forever linked. Yeah. It is amazing i feel like, you know, it is an honor to be in the same space with people who have been through a similar struggle its amazing seeing them again and, nicole, james, was there any hesitation and you as well. I didnt mean to leave you out, mia. Was there any hesitation when the doctors said, you know what, wed like to use part of mias heart to help another child. No. There was no hesitation at all. Never. We had waited so long for that gift so be able to give to somebody else was just it made the moment that much more special. Dr. Richmond, ive learned so much this is the first time a domino heart transplant had ever been done in babies can you explain why this is such an important medical breakthrough . Yeah. The valve transplant part, using the valves from mia to get to brooklyn really changes the treatment for children with severe valve disease normally that life is multiple open heart surgeries. As they get older. As they get older because the valves dont grow with them. But now with freshly transplanted valves, they should grow with brooklyn and the future really save these children from multiple, multiple surgeries. Wow and here is the thing, samantha, andres, when you get that call, they call and they say we want to try something on brooklyn that weve never tried before what did you think in that moment yeah. At first, we were kind of overwhelmed, like absolutely not. But once we talked to her cardiologist and her previous surgeon, we had so much trust in them, and we knew that if they were saying that this was the right thing to do, you know, we should just go for it. And mia is 11 months now, right . And brooklyn is how old . Almost 6 months. How is she doing . Shes doing well. Clearly you could see she has quite the personality on her but, yeah, shes been doing really well. We have been home for almost three months now or just about three months post transplant, and shes just thriving at home. Were very happy and how is brooklyn yes, same shes doing amazing. The reality is, as we sit here and have this conversation, we wouldnt be here had it not been for the heartbreaking loss of another family who lost a little one what would you say to that family who sacrificed that original heart for this domino effect they are probably the strongest people that we have ever known. Yeah. I think theyre just remarkable that faced with such a serious time where they lost something and to give to someone else is just unbelievable. Very grateful very selfless. And to be able to choose life in such a time of darkness is heroic we have first birthdays coming up. We do. Any jubilees planned . We have a lot to celebrate. We didnt know what the first birthday would look like, but this is the best Case Scenario were home were doing well. By the way, we have a shot.
