The unions representing more than 1000 1080 employees saying 99 of their members voted to strike. These are emergency dispatch workers, san jose airport that, workers at animal shelters and the zoo, even folks who do not work for the city can be impacted if you are in need of permits or inspections for nutrition services. The contract expired at the end of june and so far the union has not reached a new agreement with the city. At todays rally Union Officials push for more negotiations. You cannot generate revenue without a functioning planning department. You cannot keep libraries and parks open without employees and you cannot keep people safe without sufficient emergency personnel. We call on the mayor and the council to not ignore the needs of their workers. You will recall last may that oakland unified students were out of school for over a week while the teachers went on strike. Now the teachers in the district finally came to an agreement on higher salaries for educators, and socalled common good changes that include a Reparations Task force, and more say from parents and teachers. It is the first of the year. So, i dont want to put words in the students and families mount that i do know for some of our teachers that we recently hired, the increase in salary did make it more feasible. There have been many years where we blocked teachers, not because they did not want to teach in oakland, but they could not make the math work with the high cost of living. I am kind of jealous, because they got all this new stuff you forget we did not get to have none of this. So, i like the changes. I like everything they have done.
