Reporter these are photos he captured of five dead sturgeons, three weeks away from the peak bloom last year that killed hundreds of dead fish in the bay. He helped document it. The specific algae has been around for 20 years but last year was the first sizable bloom with major impact. Seeing the sturgeon, thats like watching redwoods burn. Reporter he said hes seen the mack of this years algae bloom predominantly in this area and thinks sturgeon and other fish like bass were pushed into area. We might be talked about localized events. Reporter he said it could cause the bloom to balloon. The ocean is under assault. Including here. Reporter we also learned that treated waste water is a huge contributor to blooms in the bay. Tonight a juror who sat on the trial of a San Jose State University athletic trainer accused of sexually abusing female athletes is talking about why the case ended in a mistrial. That juror spoke exclusively with nbc bay area about why they couldnt reach a verdict and why he says one juror in particular is to blame. Reporter well, the allegations against the trainer, scott shaw, go back many years and come from many different athletes in various sports. In fact, San Jose University has paid out millions of dollars to about 30 alleged victim to settle lawsuits. So the mistrial stunned the athletes, legal experts, and jurors. This man, who asked us not to show or identify him was one of the jurors in the federal criminal case against trainer scott shaw who faced six misdemeanor counts of inappropriately touching female athletes under the guise of athletic treatment. Eight student athletes testified that shaw touched or offended them. Shaw pled not guilty. The jury voted overwhelmingly for guilty, but deadlocked on five of the charges 102 and 111 on the other. The juror we talked to says one juror influenced another to go along with her from the start, creating conflicts in the jury room right away. She just made it clear that she would not budge. And we sent our first note to judge freeman within an hour of our first deliberation. It was obvious that she was digging in and she was not going anywhere. Reporter did she say why . Yeah. She said she didnt trust the witnesses and she didnt believe them. Reporter the legal analyst steven clark said that type of conduct is significant. When the u. S.
