As we take a look at the marine layer, those morning clouds covering san jose right now, were seeing that extending all across the bay area. But when we start out cloudy, we know its going to be a cooler day and well be in the low 60s for the start and continuing to stay in the 60s through about 9 00, then starting to see the sky clearing out as we go into this afternoon. Take a look at our afternoon highs. Once again, back into the upper 70s and low 80s for much of the south, and for the east bay were headed for 85 in antioch, oakland will be in the upper 60s. Along the coastline, low 60s for Half Moon Bay, with some upper 70s for other parts of the peninsula. So were going to talk more about this coming up. Cinthia is tracking this mornings commute. The trivalley drive times, it will take about 26 minutes to get from grant line to 680, about 11 from 580 to vargas road. Former President Trump is facing a new indictment, and this is the third one. He calls this one fake as well. Federal prosecutors say former President Trump tried multiple strategies to remain president , even after he knew he lost the election. Today in the bays drew petrimoulx says mr. Trump is fighting back by comparing prosecutors to nazis as he continues his run for the white house. Covid cases once again rising across the bay area, and doctors say they are seeing more positive tests, along with increased hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Ginger, how does this recent kind of increase look compared to the other ones weve seen . Reporter well, kris, the numbers show there is an increase in different markers, but it is being characterized as a swell rather than a tsunami, which is a bit reassuring, more reassuring than weve heard in years past when weve heard of an increase in numbers. According to San Francisco citys Public Health website, the current sevenday average of new cases in the city is 38 as of july 24th. Now, that average was in the high 20s mid july and it crept up in the third week. Infectious disease expert dr. Peter chinhong says in terms of the number of cases were seeing now, it is far lower than what we saw in the last three years. But omicron and its subvariants are still around. He says carry on with your life and be careful. In terms of the pattern over the last few months, we dont expect there to be huge changes, but rather just very incremental changes, so that the vaccine in september should be a really good match. Reporter speaking of vaccines, dr. Peter suggests if you are immunocompromised or older, have a conversation with your doctor about whether or not you need to get boosted, have a paxlovid plan and know if you have drug interactions, also carry around a mask and use it when you feel like its needed. Now, a new vaccine will be out in september as dr. Peter mentioned. If you are relatively healthy, you can wait until september to get that booster. If you are immunocompromised or older, you may want to consider getting the vaccine thats out now. Oakland police are investigating a dog napping that ended with a teenager shot. It happened monday night at 11 00 on hunter avenue. Mercury news reports two men and a 17yearold had arranged a deal to sell two french bulldogs worth more than 3,000 each. Thats when three armed suspects approached the group, stole the dogs and robbed the victims. The suspects then opened fire, hitting the 17yearold. The victim will be okay. Police have not released any information on the wanted suspects. Police departments across the bay area gathered for National Night out with the community. Officers were out in the east bay, peninsula, and the south bay. In antioch organizers say neighbors were most concerned about a rise in crime and the Police Departments text messaging scandal, which involves a number of officers accused of exchanging racist and homophobic messages. At this event in oakland at an Apartment Building in the laurel district, police shared Crime Prevention tips, hoping to raise awareness, along with strengthening relationships within the community. The organizer has been a National Night out participant to help get events going, she says theyve become more popular over the years. As you take a look at the sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen youll see that this weather will not last. Were headed for 82 in walnut creek today, while in oakland well see highs in the upper 60s, and low 60s for daly city, san mateo reaching 70 degrees, and 76 in redwood city. In San Francisco, upper 50s from the Marina District to the outer sunset, and then for the mission district, reaching 64 degrees. For the north bay, it will be 80 in sonoma, with low 90s still in clear lake, and then low 60s near the coastline. Overall were still seeing this surge in humidity, but some dryer air is starting to come in. There still will be the chance of that monsoon moisture, but as dryer air comes in, were going to see rain chances going down just to our south and east. Were also going to see temperatures going up, High Pressure will be building, well see a change in our weather pattern, and, unfortunately, well go from nice and mild to very hot for the weekend. Concord reaching 102 degrees this upcoming sunday, so make sure you put that in your weekend outdoor plans, its going to be hot in the valleys. An investigation is now under way to find out what led to a child ending up unresponsive in a pool at a south bay high school. It happened during a Summer Program at Harker School in san jose on monday. A nurse found the student and performed cpr until paramedics arrived. The school released a statement reading in part, we continue to send our thoughts and prayers to the family and are focusing on their needs and respecting their privacy. Former President Donald Trump is facing a new indictment, all related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. This is the first time in u. S. History a former president has been charged with trying to win over an election. Prosecutors say he tried multiple strategies to remain president even after he knew he lost the election. Trumps attorney is speaking with today shows Savannah Guthrie. He argues this is the first time the First Amendment has been used to criminalize speech. He says the indictment is about the former president s conduct, not about speech. He can speak all day. Of course, you can take action in the political sphere. For example, lets say somebody opposes a law in congress. Do a filibuster. Thats political speech, political action. Theres nothing wrong with that. What we have, we have something that no one else realizes there is something wrong with sending fake electors, trying to go around the law. These were alternate electors, which john kennedy did in 1960. It was an exact protocol that was followed previously. Different situation and the indictment alleges that some of these alternative electors werent even aware, they thought this would only come up if there were a legitimate dispute in court. Absolutely. And what President Trump had was an actual opinion of counsel that his request to Vice President pence was completely lawful and completely constitutional. We brought you live breaking coverage of the story yesterday morning. The massive fire started around 6 00 yesterday in the morning, and the flames caused part of that building to collapse. The heat was so intense, it also cracked windows across the street. Around 140 firefighters worked to keep the flames from spreading to the rest of the block. Eight people, though, are now out of their homes and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. After nearly four months on the picket lines, hollywood writers are seeing some progress in their strike. In the east bay were going from upper 50s in Pleasant Hill to seeing those temperatures in the mid60s at 11 00. At noon, it is at a very comfortable 71 degrees. We will see a few clouds here and there, but overall its going to be much cooler than we typically see and clearing out for the afternoon. After the death of actor and bay area native angus cloud, social media is reopening conversations about mental health. Cloud was found dead in his oakland home this week. He was known for his breakout role on euphoria. Cloud had been battling suicidal thoughts since returning home from ireland where his father was laid to rest just a week ago. The cause of death has not been released. Now social media users say his unexpected death is prompting people to check in on their loved ones. New this morning, a former dancer for lizzo is speaking out and accusing the pop star of Sexual Harassment and creating a hostile work environment. Three former dancers filed a lawsuit yesterday claiming lizzo pressured one of them in touch a nude performer at an Amsterdam Club and called attention to a dancers weight game. One said lizzos public image pushes positivivity but behind closed doors its a different story. I believe lizzo believes shes doing good and i believe that a lot of people are taking good from what shes doing, but in close quarters with her on a daily basis it tends to be very intense and very unforgiving. Stanford doctors are hopeful theyve found a breakthrough way to treat cancer. They believe they can treat cancer by turning it against itself. The head of the research team, dr. Gerald crabtree, came up with the idea while walking in the redwoods near his home. Suddenly it occurred to me over the past 40 years one of the major accomplishments in Cancer Research was the identification of cancer drivers. These genes that when mutated, they drive the cancer proliferation. The doctor does warn the treatment is a long way from being widely used, but if developed it has a potential to treat many kinds of cancer. New this morning, with many bay area schools set to start in the next couple of weeks, sleep experts are warning now is the time to get kids back on schedule. As we know, it is not uncommon for kids on summer break to stretch the boundaries of bedtime. Im not tired yet the scientists have found one week is about the ideal time to start getting everybody back on their normal schedule. One sleep doctor we talked with said the best way to get the right amount of sleep is to establish that routine. It really should be a time that we put screens away, where we brush our teeth, wash our face, do a bath if we need to, then book, and then bed. Sometimes it can be coloring, reading, depending upon the age of the child, puzzles. Something to put a buffer between active day and dimming the lights. Studies have found that sleep deprived kids actually tend to be more hyper and have bigger emotional outbursts. There are no magic numbers, but the doctor we talked with recommends that teens get nine and a half hours of sleep, while younger kids get as much as 11. We are now approaching the peak of the meteor shower that doesnt happen until august 11th, but between now and then you may see a little bit of something.
