Another cooler day on tap for us today. It will be nice to have cooler temperatures, which we dont always get during the month of august. Were starting out with temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s and its a bit of a milder start. I think it will be cooler the next several mornings. Santa rosa now the coolest spot at 51 degrees, but it is 60 in san jose. Then we take a look around the bay and our High Temperatures expected for this afternoon, in petaluma expect it to be a pleasant 75 degrees, a mix of sun and clouds, breezy winds and warm temperatures. Brentwood reaching 86 and the upper 70s for san jose. Mike, you have a couple of concerns for the east bay. One of them continues with the yellow arrow. Folks are familiar coming off the 880 overcrossing, as youre approaching the bay bridge you can choose to swing to the right. Theres a bus express lane. You can swing to the right oftentimes its a smoother drive off of that approach in the right lanes. Right now theres something going on in the mini toll plaza. Stick to these lanes just off to your left as youre approaching the toll plaza and the split because thats moving more smoothly. No incidents reported, but there must be going on perhaps with regard to the toll lanes themselves. Were watching that. Meanwhile, the rest of the bays approach toward the maze moves smoothly. Theres one more issue for oakland, a closure from eastbound 980 getting off at 17th. You cant exit because of a police investigation. For the latest, well hand it over to you. We are tracking that Death Investigation along that small stretch of roadway in oakland. This follows a vegetation fire along westbound i980 near the 17th offramp. It started around 1 30 with chp saying they saw a man setting the fire. First responders located a deceased burn victim who investigators say suffered head trauma. No word on if the person who set the fire was, or if this is also involving anyone else. There have been no arrests or the identity of that victim so far. The eastbound 17th street offramp remains closed as that investigation continues. Today the man accused of killing tech executive bob lee is going to be back in court. Yesterday new testimony and possible Defense Strategies were unveiled in the first day of nima momenis preliminary hearing. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab was in the courtroom yesterday, and is in San Francisco now awaiting day two of the hearing. Ginger, there was a surprising twist in one of the testimonies yesterday. Reporter thats right, laura. Specifically questions on crossexamination to one of the testimonies that happened yesterday. Four San Francisco Police Department investigators testified on the stand to an almost full courtroom, including the family of nima momeni and supporters of cashapp founder bob lee. Its the testimony from the last investigator who spoke about details about the party that happened on the final night of bob lees life. Surprisingly, momenis attorney asked questions indicating that momeni did not seem to have ill will against bob lee. The defense brought up another persons name. Lead investigator sfpd Sergeant Brent dittmer, one of the witnesses yesterday, said this other man is the one who momeni seemed to voice anger about because he allegedly had been giving momenis sister drugs and he may have had a romantic relationship with her. All the articles i read prior to me coming on indicated that they believed thatyent had maliinst bob lee for drugging and sexy assaulting or whatever it was, however you guys put it, his sister. And thats not the case. Thats not the evidence. Reporter now, other sfpd investigators took the stand, including one officer who testified to the stab wounds that bob lee had when he arrived on the scene. He was one of the officers that rendered aid. Day two of the preliminary hearing will start later this morning at 9 00 at the hall of justice. A family is in mourning after an east bay father of four tragically died at lake tahoe. Bill siu from concord drowned on saturday after a jet skiing accident on the east shore of lake tahoe. His wife tells us she and her husband were on the water when the weather took a bad turn. A wave knocked her husband off the jet ski and into the water. A nearby boat and First Responders attempted to save him, but he didnt make it. His wife says he was her soulmate, along with a disney enthusiast, who loved bringing magic home for his kids. Most recently he coached the Clayton Valley eagles, a team where his son played football. The team won the leagues championship in 2022. Many City Employees say they want to bring attention to the citys recruitment problems, as well as pay. Employees at city libraries and the airport are part of that union. Voting will run through friday and the strike could come as soon as next week. The city has offered a 5 pay raise in 2024 and weve reached out for a comment from the city. Weve not heard back. City leaders are also set to have a special closed session meeting tonight to decide what comes next. In cities like oakland todays celebration comes at a critical time when crime is surging. Last week oaklands naacp asked city leaders to declare a state of emergency. In that letter, the group said the problem comes from failed leadership at the city level. The president of oaklands Police Officers Association Says understaffing is to blame and city leaders need to do more. They are really overstretched and theyre really trying. What we really need is a dialogue of all the stakeholders, those in the criminal Justice System and the leaders of our city. And from a lot of them all weve heard is silence. Meteorologist kari hall is tracking that. A lot of folks are going to be out today with National Night out. Its going to be great weather and much cooler than we usually see to start out the month of august. Were starting out in the upper 50s in palo alto, its 59 degrees. We will see a slow warming trend throughout the morning and it will only be about 70 degrees at 1 00 this afternoon. Around the bay, expect it to mostly be in the 70s and 80s, some of our warmest spots inland reach up to 86 in brentwood, san jose upper 70s and petaluma at a comfortable 75 degrees. The weather wont stay like this for long. Were going to have some changes. Well talk about that ahead. Mike, youve been tracking a couple of incidents on the roads. The south bay is slower, we had an earlier crash that created backups. No big concerns, this is about the time we expect metering lights with traffic continuing to feed in out of san martin and morgan hill. Back at speed by the time you pass by cochran in the northbound direction. Approaching the carquinez bridge, still slow. The earlier crash did clear around highway 29 and theres a Ripple Effect and maybe some activity on the shoulder. Everything else looks pretty calm. The bay bridge toll plaza has an unusual backup for the hov lanes. I want to zoom into San Francisco where we have reports of a fire not far from the freeway. You guys have the latest news. We have breaking news were following this tuesday, a fire in San Franciscos hayes valley. Police got a call about a structure fire about 30 minutes ago. Look at the blaze and how it really took off. It happened on oak street and octavia. You can see from the video a few floors of the building just completely engulfed in flames. It appears to be actually a building under construction. The nearby homes had to be evacuated. We reached out to the San Francisco fire department. They are there at the scene. We dont know what caused the fire. Our own Ginger Conejero saab is heading to the scene as well. Shell join us with a live report. Quite the inferno that is burning right now in San Francisco. Criminals have broken into tens of thousands of cars over the past year, really throughout the bay area. But were now finding out a number of those breakins arent as random as you might think. Bob redell is joining us. Sometimes thieves are specifically targeting specific vehicles. Reporter you are correct. Many of these thieves are looking for your high tek devices. And even if theyre out of sight, hidden or locked in a trunk, our laptop, smartphones and tablets continue to emit a signal. Rob enderle says criminals now know how to track that signal. Just as easy as picking up a smartphone and look for a bluetooth signal, and if they see it, they can try figure out approximately where it is. I think thats good to know, to be aware, especially here. Reporter more sophisticated signal detectors like this one on your screen can better locate the source of the signal from your electronic device. These detectors are actually intended to locate surveillance equipment. Experts suggest you turn off your device to terminate the signal, or just take the device with you when you leave the vehicle. The robbery happened in San Franciscos Richmond District on friday in broad daylight. Officials say the thieves were not going after letters or packages, but the master keys or zip codes mailboxes. Neighbors say the thieves having access to those boxes is worse than losing mail. We dont have a whole lot here, but still we get checks, we get credit cards by mail, all kinds of things, just like everybody else. Obviously that will be a concern. There was a string of robberies in antioch earlier this year where thieves also went after the master key. So far, people in that neighborhood say the Postal Service has not issued any warnings or alerts. Meanwhile, postal carriers say that they really want help from police, who say officers are still working on the antioch robberies. 6 35. And happening today, the man who was arrested in connection with a cold case happened 26 years ago is expected to be in court today to make a plea. Richard Jeffrey Martinez is accused of sexually assaulting a 7yearold in sunnyvale. The alleged assault happened back in 1996. Police cracked the case earlier this year using a public database. For years sunnyvale investigators were unable to use dna evidence they recovered from the scene because it never matched anyone in that National Criminal database. New at 6 00, Sonoma County leaders are committing to hiring more people to prevent thieves from stealing calfresh or benefits from those who need it most. They estimate since june, more than 625,000 in benefits have been stolen. This is just in Sonoma County. Now, the majority of the theft is happening through electronic fraud. At the same time t county warns residents are seeing increased wait time. The Human Services Department Says they really hope to hire more than 30 people by the end of october to shorten the wait time. Thats august 11th through the 12th, where you can see 150 to 200 meteors if youre patient. Now were going to see today another rare sight, cooler than normal temperatures in the peninsula, expected to reach the low 70s. It will be mild, breezy with a mix of sun and clouds. The south bay reaching the upper 70s. In the trivalley, the low 80s and in the north bay expect it to reach about 83 today, while San Francisco stays in the mid60s. And, mike, youve been concerned about what you see at the bay bridge. Not the volume itself, but notice the volume is about mid parking lot, thats fine, great for a tuesday. Its these lanes, the hov lanes, theyre backed up well past the overcrossing. That basically never happens unless theres an incident going on just past the toll plaza, but shy of the metering lights. The times poll shows biden and trump tied at 43 . 43 of potential voters favor biden, 43 of potential voters favor trump. Theres a 3. 7 margin of error. Something to remember any time some reporter gives you percentages like that, 43 43, remind yourself, we dont elect president s that way, we elect them state by state. When you look at the race to 270, 270 being the number that youve got to get in the Electoral College to win the presidency, then the percentages are less important. It comes down to arizona and pennsylvania and georgia and a few other states. Three republican lawmakers say theyll launch an investigation into the plea deal between the trump prosecutor and hunter biden. The plea deal rejected by a judge. We are following breaking news right now out of San Francisco, a fire burning in hayes valley. Take a look at this. Police got a call around 4 00 this morning of the fouralarm fire. It was about 50 minutes ago, i should say. This is at oak street and octavia street, there are around 140 firefighters trying to battle those flames. A few of the floors of the building are engulfed in flames. Parts of that building collapsing. It appears to be a building under construction. San Francisco Fire Department is asking people to avoid that area and not drive over the water hose as they try to put out those flames. We do not know the cause of this fire just yet. We are also tracking a Death Investigation along a small stretch of roadway in oakland following a vegetation fire along 980 near the 17th street offramp. It started around 1 30 this morning. No word on if this was the person who they believe set the fire. No word of any arrests or the identity of the victim so far. Eastbound 17th street offramp remains closed as that investigation continues. Today is day two of a preliminary hearing for the suspect accused of stabbing tech executive bob lee back in april. During yesterdays hearing the defense tried to make a case the suspect, nima momeni, did not have any malice toward the victim, bob lee. Instead, momeni was angry at another man. The prosecutors reportedly also showed video of the night lee was murdered, including momeni spending time with lee half an hour before lees murder. Later today San Jose City employees will vote on whether or not to strike. Many City Employees say they want to bring attention to the citys recruitment problems, as well as pay. There are more than 4,500 employees in the union. Voting will run through friday and a strike could come as soon as next week. The city has offered a 5 pay raise in 2024.
