I think that my three predecessors have set the model as to what should be done saying once its declared to be safe and i think barack said once fauci says its clear, thats my measure. Obviously its important to communicate to the American People its safe. Its safe to do this. Reporter we also heard from Vice President elect harris. Because of the covid numbers fluctuating and now really going up, schools have opened and had to close again. She talked about how the Biden Harris Administration will approach that. Every parent wants their kid to go back to school, every teacher wants to educate those children, every Community Benefits from those children getting an education. The bay area includes monterey and santa cruz counties. The governor says some regions could get the shutdown in just a day or two. We have no choice, frankly. We tried to press lightly on the brake, on that emergency brake. I think theyre pressing a little bit hard now because we cannot keep up so far with what were preventing which is overflooding the capacity of the hospitals to care for patients. If thats the case ill probably have to lay off most of my people again, and its christmastime. Its no fun for them or anybody. Situations seem dire. These Small Businesses arent the problem. Outdoor dining isnt the issue. Its the people acting a fool out there that arent taking care of themselves and the people close to them. Reporter take a look at your tv screen. Watching not only the movies but Something Else going on in the forecast. Lets talk about what to expect because were starting out chilly this morning and this is the same weather that shapes up to be a pleasant day but then well start to see more clouds moving in tomorrow and there may be spotty light sprinkles moving in for the north bay between tomorrow night and sunday morning. After that we have a high fire danger that will be increasing due to some high winds and we know its been so dry out there, but weve gotten a lot of sunshine. If you have solar panels around the bay area you should be able to generate all of your home energy with your solar panels and the amount of Carbon Dioxide were not putting in the atmosphere like planting 21,000 trees across the state. Tomorrow more clouds coming in. Youll get about 87 of your Home Energy Savings and sunday about 89 . So as we look at our temperatures today, its going to be very nice and comfortable. After a cold morning temperatures will reach into the upper 60s for today. Then going into tomorrow we talk about the clouds moving in. There will be a cold front approaching. It doesnt look to bring us a lot of rain but spotty showers late saturday night and then it moves through. A lot of that rain just dries up. Something that comes ahead of some high winds that we may see between sunday night and monday. Taking a look at our wind speed forecast it does show especially in the north bay we could see the winds kicking up over 30 miles an hour and then calming down shortly thereafter. It will be a time well have to watch because we are in an extreme drought right now here in the north bay and so the vegetation is very dry. You add in a high wind and low humidity, and we will have the concern of the red flag warning possible early next week and then maybe even again on thursday. So a couple of things to watch for even though our weather is mostly dry. Vianey, how is it looking right now for the commute . The overall bay area is doing okay. However, if you have to take highway 17, you may want to head out now in both directions because there is a crash that is starting to cause some heavy delays right after alma bridge, the slow lane is blocked. And as you know when one side of the road slows down the other one does as well. So definitely want to head out now. It appears the majority of the states are following guidelines adopted by the cdc. These deadlines come as the numbers continue to rise, the milestone of 14 million covid cases. Dr. Anthony fauci sat down with Savannah Guthrie to talk about those numbers and the surge were seeing now. The surge is expected to continue as the numbers dont include the folks gathering over the thanksgiving holiday. Take a listen. Maybe a little bit of a blip, savannah, but we dont expect to see the full brunt of it between two or three weeks following the thanksgiving. I think we have not yet seen the postthanksgiving peak. The numbers in and of themselves are alarming and then you realize that it is likely well see more of the surge as we get two to three weeks past the thanksgiving day holiday. Reporter dr. The big question is, are people listening . Kris sanchez is live for us in san jose with what to expect. Kris . Reporter hi there, marcus and laura. Two things came up. Do the shelter orders even work and the other is will our elected leaders even follow their own advice . This comes a week after several of our elected leaders, london breed, sam liccardo and governor gavin newsom had to apologize for attending private dinners with people who dont live in their households. While the governor painted to data to validate his shelter order there was no data speak to go whether the shelter order worked despite several questions by reporters. The decision to be closed for maybe two or three months so well call it the new hibernation. Well be closed during winter. Reporter i like it, the new hibernation rather than lockdown. We did see over thanksgiving repeated advice from our elected leaders from the cdc to stay home and not gather really didnt work. People went about their business and had the holiday that they wanted. Kris, you look at it and you have the two mayors and the governor not necessarily following the rules they ask people to follow. We have two of the biggest holidays where it centers around people coming together. So have they talked about what theyre expecting from people throughout the bay area for christmas and new years eve . Reporter they keep reiterating the same point. The advice hasnt changed and the tsa had one of its biggest days in its 18year history on the sunday after thanksgiving. Thats just air travel, not the people who gathered locally or who traveled by car. And what we havent seen yet is the effect of that thanksgiving day travel on our hospitalization and case rates. We know that likely there will be a lot of people who are getting sick over the next couple of days as they start to develop symptoms. And thats when they can use up the icu beds and the lockdown. Well wait and see. Thanks so much, kris. Well this is hard to believe but were also 47 days away from inauguration day. Preparations under way for president elect joe biden, his big event, theyre well under way. It wont really look like anything weve seen before. President trump plans to skip the ceremony, so a display of peaceful transition of power will not really be front and center. President elect biden also says he will ask americans to wear masks during his first 100 days in office. Scott mcgrew, you suspect well be wearing those masks far longer than that. Even the inventor of the Pfizer Vaccine doesnt think things will get back to normal until late 2021. So 100 days into the Biden Administration is only april 30th, mid spring. The president doesnt have the authority to create a nationwide mask mandate. Hes starting with the simple ask. He says masks should not be political, theyre just there to save lives. Biden says hell ask murthy to return as u. S. Surgeon general. He was appointed by president obama but served under President Trump for a short time and says dr. Fauci will continue his work on the new Coronavirus Team as chief medical adviser. The house and senate have agreed on a defense bill that completely ignores President Trumps threats to veto it, demanding lawmakers add in new rules for Internet Companies that have nothing to do with defense, but they didnt. And then Congress Went a step further restricting the president s ability to remove u. S. Troops from strategic locations like germany and korea. The bill has been agreed upon by democrats and republicans, but they havent yet voted on it. If passed the president promises he will veto it. President trump held a mostly maskless event for College Coach lou holtz awarding the 83yearold holtz with the president ial medal of freedom. The president praised holtz and then speaking with reporters cast doubt about his own attorney general bill barr who recently said he saw no evidence of widespread fraud in the president ial election. Do you still have confidence in bill barr . Ask me that in a number of weeks from now. They should be looking at all of this fraud. This is not civil. He thought it was civil. This is not civil this is criminal stuff this is very bad criminal stuff. President trump will travel to georgia to support the senate races for current senators Kelly Loeffler and perdue.
