We begin with a flurry of new announcements in the past five hours that affect millions of people here in the bay area. San francisco and san mateo counties slid back into the most restrictive tier. You can see here every county is in the purple tier except for marin county, which is one tier away in red. This is why restrictions are tightening. This shows the average number of cases in the bay area. The newest numbers all the way on the right, nearly as high as our summer surge. But this time hospitals are also dealing with the beginning of the flu season. The situation facing hospitaling in the south bay is so serious, that it led to a rare weekend News Conference from county leaders who announced further restrictions. Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro is in san jose with us for more on this serious message from the countys top doctors. Reporter its definitely concerning, at a press conference here, the Public Health officer announced that the covid cases are spiking. There were 760 reported today alone, and to give you perspective, that is the highest single day number since this pandemic began. Now, because of that, that is why county Health Officer dr. Sarah cody issued a quarantine order. If you travel more than 150 miles away from the county, you need to get home by midnight sunday or you will be required to quarantine for 14 days. There are also new restrictions on how many people can gather indoors, retail stores, indoor malls and other facilities will be limited to 10 capacity. Grocery stores, pharmacies and drugstores can still remain at 25 capacity. Dr. Cody says the restrictions are needed because we are now at a critical crossroads. What we do or what we dont do starting today may mean a matter of life and death for many living in our county. Reporter she also announced that all Recreational Activities that involve physical contact will temporarily be prohibited. That means the San Francisco 49ers, san jose state and stanford cannot play games in the county. Also, hotels will only be allowed to be open for essential travel and for people who need somewhere to stay during quarantine. And card rooms are now temporarily closed. Again, these new restrictions go into effect at midnight on sunday. And they will remain in effect until december 21st, and they could be extended even longer if theres a need. That means that for those teams, they will not be able to play games or have practices where they have direct contact within the county. We have been in touch with and will continue to be in touch with all of the affected parties, including sports teams. That was the announcement from county leaders. No practice, no games at levi stadium. At the 49ers put out a statement saying oh whats ahead for the 49ers . They play in l. A. Tomorrow, expected to return before the quarantine takes effect. And the biggest impact they have to have an upcoming home game at levi stadium, that wont be allowed to take place there. So they are set to travel to dallas the day before these current restrictions could expire. Heres a closer look at the fire situation in santa clara county. In the last 24 hours, 760 new cases reported. 215 more cases than the record set yesterday. A Record Number of people are also hospitalized with the virus. Its 239. 59 of those from yesterday alone and 71 of those are patients in the icu. Not just the south bay starting tomorrow, new rules take effect in San Francisco and san mateo counties. Now that the counties are in the purple or the most restrictive tier, the businesses on the left must move everything outdoors. Its restaurants, wineries, gyms, museums, and zoos, card rooms and places of worship. Its worth noting that San Francisco had already banned indoor dining. On the right, you see businesses that are allowed to stay open indoors. Thats retail shops and malls. They must remain at 25 capacity. Hair salons, barbershops and other services can also stay indoors. These restrictions take effect tomorrow, but counties in the purple tier are subject to a statewide curfew. Since San Francisco and san mateo counties were added, the curfew wont take effect there until monday at 10 00 p. M. As San Francisco slides into the purple tier, the observation wheel at Golden Gate Park has closed. Ticketholders can reschedule reservations at a later date. The museum of modern art is also temporarily closing. Tickets bought in advance will be refunded. Not just the bay area, lets take a look at where things stand statewide. This is where we were, this is last week. 41 counties in purple, 11 in red, 4 in orange, and two counties in the yellow. But lets take a look at where we are today. A purple wave, 51 out of our 58 counties in that most restrictive tier. Thats 88 of the state. Six counties in red, one in orange, no counties in the yellow. A surge in bay area covid cases is putting a strain on local testing sites. This is what it looked like in fremont earlier today, as people lined up to get tested. Were learning many bay area sites are booked out for a week or two in advance, believe it or not. Some only offering appointments to essential workers, people exposed to the virus or people with symptoms. No rain and clear skies, its still feeling like fall. Yeah, it does. It feels maybe a bit more like september or october. The days quickly reverse once the sun goes down, cooling quickly. So yes, morning temperatures with most of our valleys in the 30s, that part still feels a lot like late november. In terms of the rain aspect, thats getting challenging to track down any of those chances. A closer look at that is coming up in our forecast. Lets show you around the bay area right now and what youll see outside are more clear skies. Theres a pretty view. San francisco also a little bit chilly. 59 degrees, 60s a it will earlier. Notice the wind and hazy skies were seeing. More on the air quality changes were now beginning to see in about a minute. Right now, 59 degrees in walnut creek. We had an east wind at times, bringing a little bit of smoke into Contra Costa County from areas around sacramento and solano counties, so thats having a localized impact on your air quality. Theres thats wind through the pass into the trivalley. In san jose, 57 degrees. Thats a pretty view looking south with the airplane approach to san jose airport. And yes, air quality is a little bit of an issue. Livermore, as we see the temperatures cooling quickly into the evening hours, clear skies, light wind, that allows the temperatures to drop off. But with High Pressure settling in over the region, without any wind to push out some of the wood burning smoke that we get as our temperatures get cool, some of the wood burning fireplaces add more pollution, and without wind to push it out, all bay area locations in the moderate range. Well have to watch these numbers around the east bay and south bay because we may see some spare the air alerts due to the smoke pollution adding up around the bay area. For the morning, chilly temperatures, coldest places, north bay value i why is, low 30s around santa rosa, including morgan hill to the south. Our afternoon recovery in terms of temperatures, look at santa rosa and morgan hill, two of the coldest for the morning. The clear skies and try air works in the opposite direction with the sunshine, the temperatures can rebound pretty good. Not much in the way of clouds as we see clear skies right now. In the longrange forecast, still keeps that 40i7 centered right off to the west of california. Thats more of an august and septemberlike pattern. Instead of that ridge heading a you have to the north of hawaii, its still anchored on the west coast. So our longterm rain projections, its supposed to be fall. Were in the first week of december now, all the way through the 9th. Still not seeing any rain in the forecast. So if you happen to like chilly mornings, sunny afternoons, youll love the sevenday forecast. Cooling as we go through the week. We should see a return of a north wind into tuesday, not quite as strong as last week. But no rain in the forecast. And actually heading towards next weekend, a few areas could be getting closer to 70 degrees. So not very decemberlike. At some point, we really need that rain to break through.
