We are going to have a really nice day, but a little bit windy. Were starting out clear as we await the suns arrival with a live look in san jose and the winds at times gusting up to 30 Miles Per Hour and even more in some of the upper elevations by tomorrow and the next few mornings well have some Frosty Valley temperatures and still no rain in the forecasts even as we head into next week. If youre planning to have thanksgiving dinner outside in san jose, temperatures reach into the mid 60s. As you head out on the roads, we are going to see overall a smooth commute for you. And we havent seen any big backups. Ill see whats happening right there on 580 as you come through the Altamont Pass and another update in a few minutes. Now to the covid19 pandemic and there are just jaw dropping numbers statewide. California just reported a Record Number of cases. More than 18,000 yesterday alone. And the Positivity Rate continues to climb. Currently at 5. 9 . A few weeks ago it was at 3. 8 . Hospitalizations also are up 88 over the last two weeks. A new report also reveals a devastating toll that covid19 has taken on Front Line Health Care workers. The report was released by the National Nurses united. The data finds that california is leading in covid19 infection rates for Health Care Workers. The golden state reporting nearly 36,000 cases. And starting this morning, there will be extra enforcement of the rules in Santa Clara County. Today in the baythom jensen looking and people breaking the rules, thom. Thats right. Good morning and happy thanksgiving, marcus. To you and everybody at home. The firefighters will be out. Theyre concerned about those numbers that kira was just talking about. Health officials are, as well. Santa clara county not immune from those numbers and also saying a Record Number of cases, a Record Number of hospitalizations. They will be out in places like san pedro square where we are and other places looking for violators. Many Health Officials concerned about this weekend fearing that it could become a mother of all superspreader events as people are desperate to get together for those traditional thanksgiving holiday dinners and other gatherings. Santa clara county officials are waving the red flag because theyve got those Record Number of new cases. The Record Number of hospitalizations that we talked about and very few critical beds left. Theyre really running out of options. We cant depend on our county next to us because they are under the same stress and strain. They cant provide us with beds in their counties. So, we are on our own. And our hospitals are hurting. Everybodys hurting. Here are what some of the Enforcement Teams will be looking for. Grocery stores here in Santa Clara County now limited to just 50 of capacity and Retail Stores that are so busy during the black fridaylimited to a qu 25 of their normal capacity and customers also have to wear masks and social distance. Businesses could face fines up to 1,000 and those Enforcement Teams, added Enforcement Teams plan to be out at least a minimum through this holiday weekend. A live look at sfo, pardon me, right now as some planes are taxiing, getting ready to take off. And last night we saw people coming and going in big numbers at Oakland International airport. Since friday, the tsa has screened nearly 5 Million People across the u. S. Thats half the number of travelers from last year but the crowds have increased substantially since the pandemic began. With this increased travel with all this mixing of populations from one location to another, family to family, we are literally pouring gasoline on the fire that is already burning very hot. Everythings shut down there so just to get her back here and have us all together was worth it. But its just a nerve racking time. California Health Officials are concerned about a surge in covid19 cases. Some travelers we spoke with say theyre not letting that stop them. We know 2020 has been a challenging year but still local organizations are helping to help those in need to have a thanksgiving meal. Glide in the city still plans to hand out thousands of those meals safely. Cierra johnson is live in San Francisco this morning with a look at how theyre setting things up differently this year to keep it covid safe. Cierra, happy thanksgiving. Were typically the only ones up at this hour, but right now i can tell you the 300 block of ellis is very busy with volunteers and with workers from glide setting up what you can see behind me. Now, i love updating folks on what happened since our last hit. You can see there are the table cloths going on the tables in these three tents that will also food for more than 2,300 people. The meals begin being served at 9 00 and runs until 1 00 and things are a little different. The organizers tell me they typically eat inside of the Building Family style, but this is going to be different. What youre looking at now is video from last year and its important to note that is why theyre not Wearing Masks and kind of gives you a sense of what things typically look like. This week one family per table to ensure that social distancing. Out here also a lot of signage that reminds people to use that social distancing. 2020, as we know, very difficult year for a lot of folks. So this, the way just to save thanksgiving for a lot of people and get that warm meal and have camaraderie with folks. Back out here, you can see they are moving the fences around and theyre putting those table cloths out to prepare for the meal that kicks off in about three hours. Theres also another feature that is pretty new this year. The virtual aspect of this dinner. At 9 30 on glide social media as well as their youtube pages. Music in a virtual celebration for folks that arent able to make it down here. If you did need a meal and in the city, their caravan driving around and delivering meals to some of those folks on the street and in the encampment. Theyre really working to make sure that everyone that needs to be fed here in the city receives a meal. So, it is a lot of energy really right now. Across the bay, the open mutual aid will contribute ppe and 1,000 meals at Planet Fitness along mcarthur boulevard. That begins at 11 00 a. M. At noon the samaritan house in san mateo will hold a drive through thanksgiving dinner. And heres an easy way you can help if youd like to help those in need. Our nourishing neighbors food drive. The holiday tradition is undergoing a different change because of covid, of course. Its being reimagined as a drivethrough experience at history park. We are going to take this timeline through noon and show you the Miles Per Hour and the wind gusts that well see and at noon in napa, 32mileperhour gusts and concord still at 31mileperhour gusts and livermore 26. Also windy in San Francisco and the wind starts to relax just a little bit this evening. But its still going to be breezy as those temperatures cool off and were heading down into some calmer winds tonight. But if you have solar panels and youll be at home for today, youll be able to generate all the electricity you use if you use a normal amount. If you have the solar panels powered up today youre avoiding the amount of Carbon Dioxide in tons 1,400 per day across the bay area. So, we are looking at a lot of sunshine to help power those solar panels and we do have more sun in the forecast going into the next several days. In fact, the one chance of rain i was hoping for on monday, it looks like that rain dries up before it reaches the bay area. So, we are going to continue on with still cold fronts moving through and no rain associated with them and well just at times have the winds picking up and we do, at this point, really need the rain. Hopefully well get some in december. But were going to see our temperatures staying in the 60s heading from now through at least next wednesday. So every time i walk by the playground and i see it empty, its like i forget what my job is. Reporter james job for the past seven years has been custodian at holly oak elementary in san jose. He says nothing has felt quite right around here since the day the kids went home in the spring and didnt return. James, of course, cant bring them back. But he could, he decided, do the next best thing. Yeah. Im going to make my own. Reporter now to understand just what james means. Theres something you have to understand about james. He is much more than holly oaks custodian. He is something of an artist in reside resident. All over from the tree in the library to the flag in the cafeteria to scalloptuulptures mosaics all over campus. The inspiration for james latest project, though, came from a painting he bought at a flee market. When i saw that picture, it reminded me of the playground during recess. In the fight against covid19 extra enforcement on rules of Santa Clara County. This as Health Officials battle a surge in cases and the stress on hospitals. Thom jensen is in hospitals where covid19 Enforcement Teams will be joined by firefighters looking for people violating health orders. Thom, you said businesses could get tickets up to 1,000. Thats right, good morning. Happy thanksgiving to both of you. Yes, they will be out in places like this. San pedro square where we are this morning around Santa Clara County and the normal Enforcement Teams that were already established joined by firefighters to try to help them with this effort over the holiday weekend. Heres a few of the things that they will be looking for. These new rules. As far as stores go, et cetera, limited to 50 as far as Grocery Stores right now and Retail Stores. During the black friday holiday weekend, thanksgiving weekend. Theyre going to be limited to a quarter of their normal capaci y capacity. 25 . Customers will have to wear masks and social distance. As crews have time when theyre out, theyre checking on businesses to ensure capacity issues that they see an issue and we report right up to the chain to ensure that Compliance Officer is notified. This weekend especially theres so much talk about the thanksgiving weekend and the possible surge because of the holiday weekend, but weve already got a surge going on. Record number of cases and Record Number of hospitalizations and stress on those hospital beds, icu beds just a few left in santa clara and the surge is very prevalent right now and Enforcement Teams out this weekend trying to make sure people follow the rules and be out a minimum this weekend. As you said, fines for businesses up to 1,000. Were live in san jose, thom jensen, today in the bay. Thanks, thom. Public Health Officials plead with people to not have large family gatherings. Santa clara county is in the midst of a third wave of infections and this is likely the worst so far. This is quickly stretching the countys medical resources. Just yesterday 68 icu beds were available during the morning countywide. By the afternoon, 20 people sent to the icus leaving only 48 beds available. Its troubling and quickly dwindling number for the county that have more than 2 million residents. All the way from gilroy to Mountain View to palo alto, saratoga, los gatos and here in the east side of gilroy. We have collectively very few number of beds. The highest spike we have in the county. Every day there are now over 500 new cases diagnosed. Now the only thing that will help right now is really the public taking action to help flat on the curve. County leaders are asking people to call family members instead of going over for thanksgiving dinner and take other precautions like wearing those masks and keep social distance from people who do not live inioini your household. Lets look closer at the numbers. This is a graph showing the daily new cases in Santa Clara County. Look at july. The county reported 386 cases in one day. This was july 15th. That was the height of the summer surge. Look where we are right now. 532 new cases on november 17th. Thats a record high for the county. It shows the cases are continuing to trend upward. Now, to l. A. County, marcus, where all Outdoor Dining is now shut down for at least three weeks. Many Restaurant Owners are worried that another closure will force them to close for good. And across the county, something different. The Supreme Court is blocking the attempt to limit attendance in houses of worship. This is happening in new york state in churches and areas hard hit by the virus. Now to the latest on the president ial transition. President elect joe biden addressed the nation offering hope during challenging time. We can and we will beat this virus. Americas not going to lose this war. Well get our lives back. So far president elect biden has remained quiet on two Key Administration posts which are secretary of defense and attorney general. President trump has granted a full pardon to his former National Security adviser Michael Flynn who twice pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi during the russia investigation. Flynn was fired in 2017 for lying about his contacts with the russian ambassador. Earlier this year, he asked to withdraw his guilty plea. The Justice Department had tried to drop the case, but a judge had not signed off on it leaving flynn in legal uncertainty. Well, 2020 has been challenging year, but many local organizations are still working to help those in need have a thanksgiving meal. I am glad they were able to put the centerpieces on top of the tablecloths because it is pretty windy here in the city and i dont know if you can hear, but were doing a little audio test and little music in the background from when these folks actually begin to gather. Ill step out of the way so you can see exactly what folks are walking in to when they begin to serve those meals at 9 00 a. M. You can see the tables are separated six feet apart with a few chairs around and thats because one table per household. Thats, of course, to keep everyone contained and safe. Now this tradition usually takes place inside of the glide building, but right now they have the three tents set up outside for 2,300 people. I believe we have idyoio video last year. Thousands of folks here will receive meals and for those who cant make it to the city to sit down and eat that warm meal, the caravans will be driving around the city to drop off those boxed meals for the folks in the encampments and on the street. And for many, you know, regardless of what your situation is, this is an important time. Theyre really just trying to make sure that everyone has a meal. Take a listen to why some people visit glide and how the organizers plan because we dont have that sound, but, again, back out here live, folks preparing. Theres been a lot of folks Walking Around and setting it up really hear the music now. Some sort of wind chime. Very soothing for the families to get together and enjoy the meal. Spoke with nbc Senior Correspondent Stephanie Ruhle who says anyone buying a gift this year needs to get it done sooner rather than later. This is not the year for lastminute shopping. I know we say it every year, but, honestly, this year you cant. Even if you can go into some stores in person, they have a lot less supplies. A, because many of their vendors are on delay and they dont want their stores filled up with items you cant sell. You cant go out and pick up lastminute items but from a safety perspectperspective, tha applies, too. Americans plan to spend 15 less this year compared with last. Trending for you this morning, a new way to do your christmas shopping. So, instead of traveling to Louis Vuitton store, it will have to come to you. Lets head into the trivalley where we had some low 40s here. At least the commute is rolling pretty well and no issues with visibility and then well see all that sunshine helping to warm our temperatures into the low 60s for today. In fact, as we get a look at our highs across all of our microclimates, lets start in the north bay where well see a high in spots like ukiah reaching 63 degrees and napa 65. Looking at Half Moon Bay here were going to start out at 10 00 at 56 degrees and we should make it up to about 62 today but you will want to be very careful out there because we had some large breakers and today we could see some of those breakers especially on our northwest facing beaches up to 20 feet. And theyll be coming in every 15 to 17 seconds. So, some really dangerous conditions out there. If you will be along the coastline. So, be very careful. And normally you see the floats behind me and the band and all getting out and on to the parade route and just not the case because of the pandemic. The show must and is going on today. You cant go in or go out and they made sure everyone is tested and safe inside that environment for the parade today. Organizers sang and a lot of it will be prerecorded and still become live elements of the show, obviously. But wanted it to be as much as possible as it is every year. And watching from home, you wont really be able to tell the difference. And thats good. We need a tradition and this year its been so untraditional. Youre still going to see it and still have comfort and take comfort in knowing that were still going to deliver a little bit of life, a little bit of sense of sun when we havent really had so much this year. That is extra Enforcement Effort will include even firefighters will be out in places like this at san pedro square and others around Santa Clara County where you have shoppers and people out gathering during the hodays. The surge we have been hearing about in the covid19 cases. This here could be the mother of all superspreader events this weekend as families get together for this holiday traditions like the thanksgiving dinner and the shopping, et cetera. So they need this extra enforcement to make sure that this really doesnt get out of hand even more and blow up because of big crowds this weekend. So, heres some of what they will be looking for as far as out in the public. Grocery stores are now limited to just 50 capacity. Theyll be enforcing those capacity limits and Retail Stores so popular over the black Holiday Shopping weekend. They will be limited to just 25 capacity. And Enforcement Teams will also make sure that customers are also wearing their masks and practicing social distancing. Through this weekend and enforcing fines of up to 1,000 for businesses. California just reporting a Record Number of cases. More than 18,000 yesterday alone. Positivity rate continues to go up. Currently at 5. 9 . Now, two weeks ago it was just 3. 8 . Hospitalizations are up 88 . This is over the past two weeks. And a new report further reveals the devastating toll covid19 has taken on Front Line Health Care workers. It was also released by the National Nurses united and the data found that california is leading in covid19 infection rates among Health Care Workers nationwide. Golden state reportedly nearly 36,000 cases. Of course, 2020 has been a challenging year, but, still, many local organizations are working to help those in need have a nice, warm thanksgiving meal. Glide Memorial Church has plans to hand out thousands of meals safely. Cierra johnson is live in San Francisco this morning with how glide is pulling it off with social distancing in mind. Cierra. Goodern moi morning and happ thanksgiving. Those folks who will get the warm meals from glide will be doing so elfresco because they have three tents set up here in the 300 block. You can see things really coming together. Those Beautiful Center spepiece were donated by a member of the community. We already have the gourds chairs around the tables. The folks following that social distancing and doing everything they can to keep the visitors safe. Those tables spaced apart. The food will be served with gloves and Hand Sanitizer and in years past i believe we have video. It took place inside of the church. So things really different this year around. This time around, rather. 2,500 folks will receive meals inside of these tents from 9 00 until 1 00. Cycling through and for the folks that arent able to get to this location or simply just want to stay where they are, that van will be delivering 200 meals for folks in some of those camps and on the streets.
