First time in a week, again falsely claiming that he won the 2020 election, despite setbacks in two crucial states. Big farmer ran, millions of dollars of negative advertisements run against me during the campaign, which i won by the way. The president still refusing to help president elect joe bidens transition of power, even as georgias republican governor certifies the Election Results, and Top Republicans in michigan saying they have no information that would change the outcome. All of this as donald trump jr. Says he too has tested positive for covid. You may have seen it by now, but apparently i got the ronna. On the run, a terrifying scene in wisconsin after someone opened fire inside a mall injuring at least eight people. Everybody started screaming, and like i saw a lot of people running. Police rushing to the scene, but unable to catch the gunman. This morning the desperate search to finded shooter. All that, plus double, double traffic . Colorados first ever in and out burger location opens with a line stretching for nearly two miles, the wait for the west coast eatery more than 12 hours, but hopefully everyone got their burger fix today, saturday november 21st, 2020. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with peter alexander, Kristen Welker and dylan dreyer. Welcome to today, and thank you so much for joining us on this saturday morning. Peter and dylan, its great to see both of you. I dont know about you guys, im excited for thanksgiving turkey, but boy, in and out sounds pretty good. Its never too early to talk in and out. Dylan, i feel like youd be a fan. Are you kidding . I absolutely love inandout. I think it would save time if you were in colorado and drove to california. Thats the way to do it. We will have more on that in just a a bit. We do want to get to our top stories. The Coronavirus Crisis getting worse by the day. The numbers are staggering. On friday the u. S. 6,000 cases, ever in a single day. And in the past week there have been nearly 1. 2 million cases, the worst since the pandemic began. But there is promising news this morning in the battle against covid. Pfizer, the First Company out of the gates, officially seeking emergency fda authorization for its vaccine. Weve got it all covered, starting with nbcs kathy park outside pfizer headquarters in new york. Kathy, good morning to you. Reporter hey, kristen, good morning to you. Yeah, this is a Major Development for pfizer and if all goes as planned, a vaccine rollout could happen as soon as next month for those at highest risk. Now its up to federal regulators to make a speedy decision based on the data. This morning, a big breakthrough in the race for a coronavirus vaccine. Pfizer and its german partner biontech becoming the First Companies to seek emergency use authorization for their covid19 vaccine, believed to be 95 effective. We have operated at extraordinary speed in our Clinical Development program, while always maintaining our focus on safety. Reporter evacuation mean maker moderna is expected to follow suit soon, but this fast track for approval still needs to cross fda hurdles. An independent Advisory Panel is set to convene to examine data on tens of thousands of trial participants and two months of safety followups. After authorization, pfizer says distribution can happen within hours. We expect to produce globally up to 50 million doses in 2020 and up to 1. 3 billion doses by the end of 2021. Reporter but before those doses can reach the public, the cdc will recommend who should get them first. The National Academy of medicine developed a plan for a possible rollout starting with Health Care Workers. The general public likely wont get access until the spring or summer. Despite promising vaccine news on the horizon, cases continue to soar to dangerous new highs. Californias monthlong curfew taking effect today. All nonessential activities suspended past 10 00 p. M. And with infections and hospitalizations surging throughout the midwest, governors in illinois, kentucky and minnesota are tightening restrictions on businesses and gatherings right before the holiday, as travelers across the country rush to get tested before heading home. But still, experts warn that its important to weigh the risks. Do you really want to get a crowd of 10, 15, 20 people, many of whom are coming in from places where they have gone from crowded airports to planes, getting into the house . A critical question as this crisis deepens. Back on the vaccine front, many Health Experts say theyre confident in the vaccine vetting process, there is still some worry among americans. According to a recent gallup poll, 42 said they would not get the vaccine, which is down from 50 last month. Kathy park starting us off in new york this morning. Thank you. Lets bring in nbc News Public Health analyst dr. Vin gupta, associate professor at the university of washington medical school. Dr. Gupta, good morning. The arrival of a vaccine or maybe more is a welcome dose of good news at the end of this long year. I guess the question is how soon before it puts a real dent in this pandemic . And should we change our routine once it arrives . Good morning, peter. So the question thats on the tip of all of our tongues here in Public Health, the answer here is that the vaccine is providing us mediumterm relief. I think the sense that theres a light at the end of the tunnel. But that tunnel is going to extend out, we think, until the end of q2 2021, so beginning of summertime 2021. Thats when i think we can start hopefully to see vaccination rates of this vaccine being in the 60 to 70 range, which is that number that we need to hit to start saying, okay, if this vaccine works, if a set of vaccines work and we can distribute it, thats when we can start to talk about normalcy, hopefully having a mid to late summer feeling of, okay, if youre a family and want to plan a vacation, you can do that safely. Were still talking about six, seven months ahead. Dr. Gupta, weve got to talk about thanksgiving. A lot of families finalizing their plans this weekend and talking about adding one more Family Member, one more person to the table. What is the risk in that . Kristen, youre touching on a really critical point here, that drivers of this virus at this moment we think now are congregations inside individual homes, inviting a few extra people into your home that you dont normally live with. So adding that extra person who you may not have seen, who may not have gotten tested, who may be asymptomatic with covid19, its that phenomenon that were worried about across the country. And this notion that it wont happen to you, it might happen to somebody else, thats what were trying to guard against here, that uncertainty. Thats why the cdc and its why every Public Health official is saying please dont travel and please limit who you have over to dinner to just the people that youre actually living wi. Don invte individuals that you dont actually live with into your home right now, its just too dangous. Dr. Vin gupta, we appreciate upper expertise and all your help throughout this. We wishou a very good holiday. Thanks for your time this morning. Thank you. And now the news that another Family Member of the trump family has tested positive for covid19. And while a person close to the president tells nbc news mr. Trump knows he lost, the white house remains publicly dug in. I believe President Trump will have a second term. Reporter this morning, 23 of the 35 legal challenges by the president and local republicans have already been denied, dismissed, settled or withdrawn according to an nbc news count. This as georgias governor certified Election Results there late friday, after a hand count, biden winning the state by 12,284 votes. Two runoff races there on january 5th will decide control of the senate, drawing Vice President pence to campaign in the state, hoping to keep the president s base engaged. On stimulus spending there needs to be Emergency Assistance and aid during the lame duck session to help families move forward. Reporter and on the need for communication with federal agencies. This isnt a game, who gets to talk to whom. Our anyoinability to start our review process has real impacts on families across the country. Reporter bidens transition hamstrung, as covid19 cases rise and frustration mounts. Biden is growing impatient with the waiting game. So too are congressional democrats, demanding a briefing from the gsa on whats holding up certification of the election. Others urging bidens team to take it to court. I think if president elect biden were to go to court, a court would quickly say yes, this is becoming really a travesty and its time for us to speak up about it. Reporter biden advisers say legal action is still an option, but concerns remain that it could back fire, lengthening the Holding Pattern and on lingering lawsuits from the Trump Campaign, bidens top lawyer on offense. The harm is real. There is no chance whatsoever that donald trump can be successful in what it is that he is trying to do. While the president and his allies are ripping at the fabric of the democracy in any way they can, the fabric is not tearing, its holding firm. Reporter and while the Transition Team waits, staffing continues. Speculation hitting a fevered pitch as biden teased that he settled on a pick to lead the treasury department. Kohls we are back this morning with a new normal. Of course typically this time of year millions would be getting ready for a busy week of travel around thanksgiving. But of course as cases of the coronavirus soar across the country, the cdc is now advising against it. Thats right. Even still there are people who will choose to or have to fly, and airports are already beginning to get busier and busier. So nbc news investigative and consumer correspondent vicky nguyen is here with the risks to consider before taking that flight. Break it down for us. Good morning. Hey, good morning, kristen and peter. Yes, in the midst of this pandemic, americans are being asked to stay home. But that may not be a choice for you if youre a College Student who has to get off campus or maybe you have to go somewhere to care for a loved one. This morning we put together a risk checklist for questions to ask and things to consider doing before you take off. The rush to get home for the holidays usually takes place around thanksgiving, but like much of 2020, things are different. Aaa projects travel by automobile will fall 4 . Thanksgiving air travel volume will be down by nearly half. While experts are asking us to stay local, there are people who will travel longer distances. Whats your advice when it comes specifically to flying and air travel . Were still in a phase where travelers need to look carefully at their reasons for travel and not travel unless its very urgent. If you are going to fly, consider this risk checklist. Your destination. Is it a hot spot, and do people there generally wear masks as recommended by the cdc . Where will you stay . Who will you interact with . And what is your plan if you or someone in your Group Contracts coronavirus . Will you be required to quarantine at your destination or when you come home . If you decide to fly, make sure to plan ahead, especially if youre traveling with kids. Wear clothes with a lot of pockets. You want room to stash those snacks and of course keep a pocket open for your i. D. And your phone for quick access and dont forget to bring extra masks. Remember, tsa is now allowing up to 12 ounces of Hand Sanitizer per person, so even a big bottle like this is allowed. And you want to keep your disinfectant wipes in an outside pocket so theyre easy to get to. I like these little bottles of Hand Sanitizer that you can clip onto a belt loop or attach to your bag for easy access. At the airport maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet from others. Once onboard, wipe down all the surfaces you might touch, including the tray, the screen and seat belt buckle. As for your seat, is there one thats considered safest . Dr. Wu says choose a window seat because youre less likely to come in contact with passengers and crew walking the aisles. What about breathing the air in an airplane cabin . The good news is that our modern aircraft have very efficient and effective air filtration systems. That, however, does not eliminate the risk of somebody immediately around you. Wash hands with soap and water once you land, and keep that mask on until youre out of the airport. Ways to reduce your risk as youre making your way home for the holidays. And by the way, you might want to even pack a full meal because a lot of airport restaurants are closed. When it comes to face shields or goggles, theres no definitive evidence on whether you should wear them, but in the past dr. Anthony fauci has said eye protection is a good idea. My last tip, if you can book a nonstop flight. They might be more expensive but it will save you the risk of exposure at a second airport during a layover and that can help bring your coronavirus risk down. Peter and kristen. As always, you have such fantastic tips. Vicky nguyen, thanks so much. Great to see you on this saturday and i always feel a little safer with those eye goggles on. Watching vicky its like gogo gadget jacket. Shes got pockets everywhere. How does she find these things . Shes amazing. She was all geared up. Dylan, another check of the forecast. Youre like that as a mom with two boys running around. Im sure youve got the pockets everywhere. I do think its a mom thing. Its incredible where you can pull things out of. Lets take a look at whats going on across the country because it is the weekend, after all, and we are going to see most of our unsettled weather right in the middle of the country back through the planes into the midwest where we do have a frontal system producing a chilly rain today. Its only going to be in the 40s. Even some upper 30s across the u. P. Of michigan. Were also looking at sunshine across the northeast, temperatures in the mid60s in new york city down into d. C. , so it is going to be mild in the midatlantic. Also nice and warm and sunny across the gulf coast. In the northwest were getting a break from those series of storms making their way into the Pacific Northwest, although alaska is in the middle of a snowstorm that could produce in some areas up to 50 inches of snow. The next storm moves into the Pacific Northwest tomorrow. The rain in the plains will move over into the eastern great lakes and it will be cold in the interior northeast, so that could produce some snow, especially in some of the higher and were waking up to a gorgeous sunrise over san jose. Mostly clear skies but chilly tell temperatures to start our morning. San jose right now at 39 degrees. Morgan hill, 33. And those 30s will eventually warm up quite nicely into the mid 60s throughout the bay area.
