And as i say, im not a person that likes to take medications anyway. Im not going to take it until what i see what the results are from other people. Only then ill take it. As early as next month. Frontline workers should be getting the vaccine followed by Senior Citizens who live in retirement homes. I dont know when youre going to start putting up your festive decorations, kari. Im thinking of doing it this weekend. I need to dig all the bins out of the back of the closet and see what i have and maybe put some up this weekend. But its really hard to see this morning as we are talking about the low visibility and the fog and as we take a live look outside in walnut creek, were starting out cool with some mid 40s here. A calm wind and weve seen that fog kind of drifting around. So, as we check out san jose and the live view there, go across the bay and look at our high temperatures for this afternoon. Once it clears out, well see highs in the low 60s and some sunshine later today. Its going to be really nice. This is the kind of weather well see into thanksgiving when maybe a lot more people will be putting up those decorations. Well talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. Mike, how is it looking as drivers try to make it through the fog . Kari, kind of like what your house might look like if you put the lights up. What we can see of it from our camera tough visibility there and the map shows you the same thing. Remember, we have weather data on our traffic maps, as well. The rest of the bay shows a smooth drive and lower the speeds because we have many patches trivalley and north valley and how tough it is to see over there. Thanks so much, mike. The bay bridge toll plaza full because the metering lights are on. Notice the low clouds keeps getting tougher to see the end of the toll plaza here and the visibility across the span is tough. Look at san rafael, also. Our shot there shows why a fog advisory for not just the bay bridge but richmond to san rafael bridge as well as the Golden Gate Bridge. Lower those speeds. Regular beams. No high beams in the fog. Makes visibility worse. Goodern moi morning and ver thursday to you, as well. Firsttime jobless claims 742,000 americans filed for those claims last week. Marcus and laura, i got to thinking about what i said yesterday. 50 million doses by the end of the year. To put that in perspect sk, that is just the people in california and texas and nobody else. I mean, if thats how we distribute to put 50 million in some kind of perspective and i got to thinking about it and i check would pfizer on how theyre defining this idea of a dose. I thought it was the entire program. You need two doses of the Pfizer Vaccine, so, were talking about 25 million americans. That would be slightly more than half the population of california. And we have to remember, as well, it will be First Responders who will receive, first in line, basically, for the vaccine. It will be interesting to follow. Thank you so much. Blame it on the blanket. Thats right. Well, you know what, people need those blankets this morning. Thats what i was going to say. Some of these mornings, you want to be cud lae. If you dont have anyone, get a big blanket. I wonder if it smells like pizza. Thats cheesy. All right. Lets get to whats going on this morning as we check out our weather and were starting out with some really dense fog, especially in the trivalley, as well as parts of the north bay. Our current visibility down to a quarter of a mile, thats not much farther than your headlights. And so you want to slow down especially in some of our valleys where we are seeing quarter mile visibility in napa and santa rosa. Now, as we continue to monitor whats going on with climate change, looking at San Francisco over the winter months on average from 1970 to now and 2020, weve seen our average temperatures coming up over three degrees. That is huge. Meaning the average temperatures are three degrees warmer. Now, recently i had someone ask me on facebook, why dont we get as much fog as we used to in San Francisco and this could be the reason why. Cooler temperatures allow for that water in the air to condense and creates that fog. But if its going to be warming up, we could see less foggy days along the coastline, as well as San Francisco. Thats something to think about as our climate warms. Were looking at temperatures today only making it into the upper 50s for highs along the coastline and inland areas will reach into the low 60s and livermore, antioch reaching 62 degrees. You can see at the bottom of the screen, were not going to see a lot of changes here as we go into next week. In fact, all the storm systems that well see will stay well to the north of us. Were going to see some fog developing for the next several mornings and issues with air quality as we are going to see no more rain coming in. The showers that we had yesterday was pretty beneficial. It will be nice to see some more, but as we lead into thanksgiving, we are going to see a dry weather pattern setting up and its going to remain. Well have to watch those morning temperatures as we drop down into the mid 30s in the inland valleys while San Francisco will see temperatures in the upper 50s today and tomorrow and then some low 60s into the weekend as well as next weekend. It looks like it does hold for thanksgiving, as well. Lets head over to you, mike. The fog causing any crashes or issues on the roadway . Not necessarily causing the crashes, at least not from chp reports. But this is the issue. Our friends in the control room protect me from showing you bad stuff. But i have asked them to show you this not great camera shot in fremont because the fog just drifted across our camera and we can no longer see 880 just below the camera. So, thats a rooftop camera. Tough visibility. Now, look at the map. On the map ive circled where that camera is and it looks clear as far as that visibility chart goes. We do have the orange blob over farther north in the trivalley and indicating even tougher visibility. So, there you go. Just because its clear on the map doesnt mean it will be completely clear for your visibility. Now, as we look out to the trivalley, definitely tough to see and 84 is suffering those. Those speeds are slower coming through livermore and pleasanton as a result. Keep that in mind. Arrow shows you where kari and i show you the dublin camera which is having trouble showing. Back to you. Thanks so much. 6 2 1. Coming up next, nbc bay area responds. Two airlines one refund and zero success getting it. She has a look at of our forecast. This is the view in dublin and you can barely see anything. You want to slow it down as you make your way out the door. This dense fog not only in the trivalley but parts of the north bay and well still see dry weather returning to the forecast as we go into this afternoon. A lot more sunshine breaking out and unfortunately im not seeing any rain in the forecast as we goin go into the next week or so. High temperatures for today. Well reach into the low 60s for this afternoon and our seasonable weather coming back. Well talk more about this and what is coming up in a few minutes. Mike, were dealing with this dense fog for at least the next couple hours. Yeah, kari. Listen to karis forecast and talking about less than a quarter mile visibility at times and that is not far enough to give you good stopping distance in your headlight or any other view. Do slow those speeds down. Look at the bay bridge toll plaza. Of course, you slow it down because the metering lights are on and notice the clouds that fill in the rest of the shot. Clouds and fog on the span and look at the map. Fog advisories from chp, the bay bridge, Richmond Bridge as well as the Golden Gate Bridge all marked with hazardigns and in theorth bay a lot of orange highlighting ishere whe fog is the densest through the area coming in through novato and san rafael. The trivalley where the shift in the clouds does mean it will be tough in many patches. Ill call out Contra Costa County later. Breaking developments overnight in the search for a covid vaccine. Astrazeneca says phase two trials with a vaccine is working and theyre working on it with oxford university. Theyre considered a safe alternative. It creates an immune response from the virus, including in older adults over the age of 70. This is important as that age group tend to see the most severe cases of covid19 and those infections can lead to deaths. The testing did not assess the vaccines effectiveness something its phase three trials should reveal. Now, the progress is so much needed. Here in california, the state has more than 1 million cases with another nearly 10,000 just added. The Positivity Rate is also rising with a sevenday average at 5. 3 . Well, today in the bay chrkris sanchez is live in campl and digging deep into a possible strategy that some are taking to be safe this thanksgiving holiday. Kris, what are they doing . Well, you know, everybody is trying to figure it out for the first time because weve never been here before. But, i will tell you that here in campbell and one of the 17 testing sites for santa clara county. They will be testing today but you have to have an appointment and good luck getting one. People have been clamoring to get tests ever since things started getting a little more serious. People are not feeling well. They feel like they maybe have been exposed to somebody who tested positive or they want a negative test in order to feel better about getting together with family or friends for thanksgiving. But thanksgiving is a week away. Thats a long time, doctors say, and that negative could give you a false sense of security. Theres a lot of lag between testing and results and presumably a lab when you get the results and when you meet with your family members. Doctors remind us that with testing, timing is everything. The incubation period for covid19 is 14 days. So, someone who is infected today could feel fine and test negative for almost a week and have no symptoms and perhaps be contagious the whole time. Also some rapid tests have high higher positive rates. The advice is if youre getting a test for gathering, selfquarantine beforehand to limit your exposure. Even if you get the negative test youre hoping for, were all hoping for. Make sure if you gather, wear a mask and keep your social di distance. In campaign, kris sanchez, today in the bay. It really seems like timing is everything for this when you get the test, keeping the distance. I guess theyre even saying use paper plates. Have one person serve the food and you have to be so careful. Absolutely. And you know people are trying to do the right thing and more and more every day people are saying, you know what, the right thing is to just stay home and do it with the people that we live with. Thats what were doing. Thats right. Im zooming with my family. Thank you. Thanks, kris. 6 35 for you this morning. Theres no real relief in sight in terms of the pandemic. President trump is staying quiet on the Record Number of covid deaths in the United States which just reached more than 250,000. Many lawmakers have now left town for the thanksgiving break with no progress on a new covid relief bill. Scott mcgrew is watching washington for us this morning. I spoke with former Senior Adviser to president obama valerie jared. This is for our special tonight and this is what she had to say about the possible impact of the pandemic on black and brown communities. The isis if the Trump Administration continues to hold up the transition process. Take a listen. We could lose lives because of the lack of transparency. It is so vitally important. Days matter. So, after listening to that, scott, what information is not being shared between the outgoing and incoming administrations . Well, the biggest is obviously coronavirus. We worry about defense and intelligence and that kind of thing, but coronavirus is the big one that killing a quarter of a million americans at this point. We have gotten word that some scientists are actually talking to the incoming biden administration. Thats something that probably helps america, but, laura, is not really the system by which we would want to be going by. Well, President Trumps team is in pennsylvania now asking that the whole states vote be thrown out there and the decision as to who won left up to the state legislature. Scott mcgrew, that actually would disenfranchise nearly 7 million people, though. Yeah, it would. Its not going to happen, marcus, say the republicans on the Pennsylvania State legislature. But it was remarkable to see that the Trump Administration even asked for it. Right. The campaign filed an amended lawsuit in court asking that a judge order republicanled state legislature to instruct the electors that the people who really vote for the president should vote for President Trump instead of joe biden who won the state. Now, presumably, they would not ask for this if the legislature had a democratic majority. Rudy giuliani said the Trump Campaign will have a press conference at 9 00 a. M. Our time. We dont know what it is going to be about. We dont expect the president to be there. The last one at the four seasons landscaping company. This one that Republican National headquarters in washington. Well update you about it in our midday news. In michigan, the Election Officials i was telling you about yesterday in wayne county the ones that didnt want to certify votes but did. They want to change their minds and uncertify the vote. The two republican members of the wayne county board of canvassers say they were pressured into voting to certify. Now its not totally clear if there is a mechanism to uncertify a vote or undo such a vote. Thats the news on the election. There are other big issues. The biggest one being mark meadows the white house chief of staff says he cant guarantee the government wont shut down in december. Thats the deadline as the two sides bicker over the latest funding bill. Seven state governors including two republicans have written an oped in the Washington Post asking really pleading that you not have a big Family Gathering for thanksgiving. The governors of wisconsin, illinois, minnesota, indiana, kentucky, michigan and ohio ask you to picture the people around your table last year and then picture their faces laughing with you and watching football and even arguing with you about politics. As hard as it will be to not see them this thanksgiving, imagine how much harder it would be if their chairs are empty next year. Heres one of the authors the governor of wisconsin. Its time, folks. We do not get any do overs here. Enough games. We need you to join the cause. We have heard promising reports of vaccines on the horizon in the new year. We need to buckle down and get through this together. Good advice from the governor of wisconsin there. Now, scott, we were just looking at a new report that says 300 companies that received ppp funds now filed for bankruptcy. Washington still struggling to renew any new stimulus, as well. As youre reporting, they all went home. Were not going to get a st stimulus any time soon. The company had 23,000 people all collectively and couldnt make it without government help. Most of them in industries that you would expect hp hospitality is the big one. The Positive Side of this, laura, youre our optimist of the group is that there were millions of loans and 300 of them so far have gone bankrupt. Thats not bad. Yeah, certainly remains tough out there. Lawmakers, as we mentioned, home for the holidays, ales wes well. Thanks so much, scott. As i mentioned earlier for you, be sure to join us tonight for our allnew race in america episode seven. Yeah, weve been talking a lot about this. Valerie jarrett and more of that conversation for you tonight and make sure you join us. Its at 6 30. We really look forward to that. Rough news for warrior fans this morning. Before the season even starts, Klay Thompson is hurt again. Today in the bay Cierra Johnson at the chase center with a warriors update and includes new possible off the charts rookie were talking about here, cierra. Goodern moi morning. Yes, a ton of news out of one warriors way. The biggest as you mentioned Klay Thompsons injury to his lower leg and right now we dont know the extent of the injuries but the 30yearold guard is no stranger to injuries. He tore his left acl while playing against the Toronto Raptors in game six of the 2019 nba finals last june and then missed the entire remaining season recovering from that injury. And while we arent sure about his next season or really what the season would even look like because of covid, we know the team did make plans to resume games here at the chase center with a Live Audience and lower cumasapacity and Rapid Testing. We know San Francisco has rejected the teams plans to use Rapid Testing on everyone, including fans, staff and security. And a letter to the warriors front office, the department of Public Health thanked the team for planning ahead, but cited rising cases in denying their plans. But now for some good news from the warriors. The team has finally secured that muchneeded big man james wiseman. 71 comes to the bay area from memphis. The 19yearold was the top recruit coming out of high school and just really played three games with the tigers before preparing for the draft and leaving the team. So, theres a lot of uncertainty. A little bit of disappointment and a big guy coming to the bay area to help this team out and a season that right now is still a little in the air. Were live in San Francisco, Cierra Johnson for today in the bay. Yeah, little in the air but were always rooting them on. Thanks, cierra. We wish klay the best in his recovery. Cierra mentioned 71 tall. May not be breaking news for basketball, but for me thats like standing next to the salesforce tower. Last season the nba had 15 players that were taller than seven feet. The tallest was 75. He is on the boston celtics. When marcus and i would do public appearances together, i would have to bring out my highest heels. I call them the marcus heels. But even then i would pail in comparison. I cant imagine standing next to wiseman. With him it is three boxes and the heels. But, you know what, the bay area has a good reputation for big men from memphis joining teams here at nbc bay area. It works out. Another thing working out for us is the forecast for today. The rain has moved out, but the fog is sticking around for us, kari. Yeah, that moisture from the rain left on the ground and we are going to see low visibility for you this morning as youre getting ready to head out for work. I mean, check out the north bay, no novato. Visibility down to zero. You need to be really careful driving to work and in the trivalley, as well. Seeing really low visibility down to a quarter of a mile. We are seeing some fog at ocean beach this morning but i want to show you something due to climate change, we are seeing much warmer days in San Francisco, as well as across the country from 1970 to 2020, weve seen our average temperatures up over three degrees. That is huge and that could be the reason why we see a lot less fog than we used to back in the day. A lot of people remember that. All right, lets get a look at our temperatures for our highs today reaching into the upper 50s and low 60s. Overall, this is about normal. We are going to be in this weather pattern where we see dry conditions and Cool Temperatures and a lot of the rain staying to the north of us. So, if youre going to make some weekend plans and plan on some sunshine even into thanksgiving. Were not going to see any showers headed our way. Of course, desperately needed rain but were in now with some highs in the 60s and a lot of sunshine continuing at least into thanksgiving. Mike, how is it looking getting out the door into work this morning . Kari, the look is the problem. Fog. Dense fog in many spots. But look even our camera in san jose. 101 were typically clear for the view. Has had fog over the last 20 minutes. Clearing up now nicely as the sun starts to come up, but slowing on the map right there where ive circled north 101 just past 680. Lets zoom over towards the trivalley where we also have a good amount of fog and tougher visibility. You see the patch there in pleasanton and im circling the dublin interchange and our camera cant show you that because the visibility is really tough right now from the rooftop camera. A disabled vehicle right at the county line will be tougher to see. Allow about half an hour out of brentwood and slow those speeds there as well as across the bridges for fog. Back to you, marcus. Thanks, mike. Happening now for you, thousands of people are now homeless in honduras and nicaragua because of flood waters from hurricane iota. The second storm to battle Central America in two weeks killing at least 30 people. Next a quick look at the top stories including more hopeful news in the race for a vaccine. Another company now saying it is seeing encouraging results. The latest on a timeline and some of those potential obstacles. Youre watching today in the bay. Theres no bad time to start at amazon. Yeah, good morning to you, marcus and laura. Astrazeneca and university of oxford announced the Coronavirus Vaccine is safe and triggers a similar immune response in all adults. This according to preliminary results from a phase two trial that was published in the lancet medical journal. Pfizer the analysis of their vaccines have found that theyre 95 effective. Thats higher than initial results suggested. Those Companies Plan to submit an application for emergency use authorization within days. But those companies are figuring out how to ship tens of millions of doses across the nation and what has to be well below zero temperatures. Also how to convince skeptical citizens to take the vaccine. A vastajor my would have to be vaccinated achieveerd immunity and the review commission may help ease some of those concerns. I would just expect that review to be fairly quick and give us another layer of certainty to the results that have been presented earlier today. I dont trust it. So, thats just, and as i say, im not a person that likes to take medications anyways. Im not going to take it until i see what the result is from other people. As early as next month, front line workers could be getting the vaccine followed by Senior Citizens who live in retirement homes. But herd immunity depends on young people getting vaccinated and since front line workers and older people will get vaccinated first, younger people wont be offered until the spring. Bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you for that great info there. Did you notice all the fog behind bob redell out there in pleasanton this morning. It is hitting a lot of parts in the east bay, as well. There we go. Well take a live look. This is actually up in san rafael, as well. So, foggy conditions greeting many parts of the bay area this morning. Although im down here in the south bray and it looks kind of clear in my neck of the woods. Hopefully i can take the dog out for a walk in a little bit. No rain in sight, i understand. No rain in sight. But the rain we just had is leaving all of that moisture on the ground and what is causing that fog to develop this morning now that temperatures have cooled off. And all that moisture is condensing. As we look at what is ahead, well see temperatures in the low 60s and, yes, a lot of dry weather and sunshine and even extending into thanksgiving. How is it looking right now for the commute, mike . Kari, we have a very tough drive for visibility. The bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on and slowing traffic on the span because visibility is tough there. I want to show another shot which is a horrible shot to show but this is live tv and the conditions out in fremont mean we cant see the freeway from our rooftop cameras. So, laura, the south bay where you are is okay getting down there is tough at times because of fog through the trivalley. Yeah, my goodness. Almost looked like just a gray shot you put us there. Thanks so much. And thank you for joining us, as well. Take a look live for you this morning from chase center. Of course, everyone here rooting for Klay Thompson with that leg injury. Today show is coming up next for you. Have a great morning. Official sounds a new alarm. This is not crying wolf. This is the worst rate of rise in cases that weve seen in the pandemic. Schools once again shutting down, including in new york, the nations largest district, forcing millions of families to scramble. They need to close bars and restaurants before they close schools.
