We are catching a break for some spots as the rain is tapering off and what we expect as we head into late morning and into the afternoon. We are still seeing some activity here and there. Green on the radar as well as snow that continues for the sierra. Look at storm ranger. Our mobile doppler radar. The red scan you see around the bay area, we are seeing rain in parts of the north bay as we get a closer look and moving through northern napa county and northeastern Sonoma County and moving off towards the east as youre still seeing some pockets of some heavy rain in that area. Then as we move elsewhere across the bay area, we are seeing some spotty showers. Marin county, as well as San Francisco, a chance of light rain and then we are going to see rain chances continuing. As we see the clouds, at any time rain and then rain taerper off and the dry weather returns tomorrow through the end of the week. We will see dryer weather our way and talk about that and much more coming up. Major news from pfizer this morning. The drug company says that its vaccine is 95 effective. This is up from the original estimate of 90 . More exciting news in the fight to end the covid pandemic is something created right here in the bay area. The fda just approving the first athome rapid results test created by a bay area company. Nbc bay area news kris sanchez is joining us for this midday live. What does this mean for all of us . Reporter it means we might not have to go outside of our home to get a covid test. I know it makes people nervous to go somewhere where there might have been covid to find out if they have covid. The test should be widely available next spring and cost less than 50. The first fully athome rapid test got emergency fda approval. It is a molecular test is more sensitive than the antigen test you can get at home right now. A patient can administer that test within two minutes the company says and results within on 30 minutes and no need to send that sample for a lab. The test is available to patients here first. It will roll out widely spring of 2021. The testing is one part of the fight and vaccine is the other. Pfizer will ask for fda approval for their vaccine the company says is 95 effective with no serious side effects and effective for older people too who we know have been so vulnerable. The company says it can make 50 million doses to start this year, more in 2021. Two days ago ago, moderna developed a vaccine equally as effective but could be more widely available because it does not require that subzero storiage listorage like pfizers vaccine. Health care workers are first in line for the vaccine and rest of us will have to wait a couple of months and nice news its coming from the bay area. Kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. Doctors are saying the next two weeks could be critical in slowing the covid19 surge across the bay area. State Health Offices say about 12 of cases will become hospitalizations within the next two or three weeks. There are concerns that the Health Care System could become overwhelmed. Santa clara county hospital had 87 Covid Patients in mid october. Now there are 151. In San Francisco, a similar trend on october 18th, 17 Covid Patients were hospitalized. There are now 39. Infectious disease physician at Stanford Health care says luckily hospitals are not overwhelmed like in other states we are seeing. We have capacity now. We have medications. We have ppe. And but things can change very quickly. She says if everyone wore the masks, social distance while around others outside of their home there would be very few cases in about a month. Right now, Health Care Workers in the south bay are asking for the publics health. They urgently need ppe. The medical Valley Foundation had a News Conference asking for donations. Leaders say the donations are needed more than ever as that surge worsens. So far, the Valley Medical Foundation has supplied millions of personal protective equipment to Santa Clara Countys three Public Hospitals and other health care organizations. Governor newsom hinting to High School Sports and most practices resume less than a month. Now the High School Sports season is slated to january and the governor gavin newsom may have to press pause on this. They say no competitions until the state issues new guidance. The building behind me burrows hall wrapped up ten minutes ago and moved to the second hall a little further down the campus. A spokesperson tells me this process has been years in the making and public raised concern a few years back and following formal review where we are now, the removal of the names from these buildings. So for a little background. Brothers john and joseph came to berkeley from the south and slave owning families. They used scientific language to promote racist items. The other name sake served as uc president in the early 1900s and according to the university wrote, quote, the white or european races above all others the great historical race. Not the first time a building lost its name here. Bolt hall at the Berkeley School of law was renamed because of the racist writing of its name sake john henry bolt. A 19th century attorney. This is about removing historic ties and names to these people. The folks behind it say it will strengthen inclusion and belonging. What is happening today is very important for the university and very important for our campus community, particularly for members of our community who are from the black communities and from communities with color. While names only be symbolic those symbols have importance in weight. When y havou a building named for somebody who racist that interfered with peoples ability to feel a sense of belonging and failed to connect the values of the institution. Two fatal crashes as you know of the boeing 737 max and in both cases, the pilots unfamiliarity with some of the special changes in that particular model were listed as contributing factors in the crashes.
