Bay area restaurants feeling the pinch like never before. The latest hurdle, a propane shortage for all those outdoor heaters. Restaurants in six bay area counties are banned from serving customers indoors. Thats these counties in purple. You can see them there, in addition to San Francisco, which made its own decision to move restaurants to outdoors only. Lets bring in nbc bay areas Marianne Favro in santa clara for us with the new challenges. Marianne. Reporter im here at mission city grill in santa clara where people are just starting to sit down for dinner. Now, this restaurant has just added this patio covering, and they also just put up these heaters as well. But at lunchtime, they couldnt put them up because it was just too windy. Paul eats at mission city grill in santa clara almost every day. But now that the county is back in the purple tier, hes forced to eat outside, even on a wet and windy day. A little bit chilly. Reporter the restaurant coowner says he was expecting the restrictions, just not so soon. So, staff had to scramble to put up this tent just yesterday. The county says they did it right. Outdoor restaurant tents are only supposed to have two sides to allow for plenty of airflow. What is not flowing are the catering jobs booked for upcoming business meetings. When they went into the purple tier i had the phone call and basically said they have to cancel because all the meetings have been cancelled so we have to cancel the catering job. Reporter and the hits keep coming. Patio heaters are in short supply and Restaurant Owners are having a hard time getting propane to fuel them. For the first time ever, this Ace Hardware Store in los gatos is limiting how much propane each person can buy. We have a restaurant who wanted to get 27 bottles of propane. We limit our sales to one bottle per person per day. Here at mission city grill, without indoor dining, the restaurant is down nine tables. Were going to lose a lot of our, you know, capacity due to not having indoor, but were going to do the best we can. Reporter a pandemic serving up new challenges to struggling restaurants. Restaurants are also paying a lot more for operational costs. For example, a lot of Restaurant Owners i talked with said they have to pay as much as 240 a day just for the propane to run those patio heaters that keep you warm. Reporting live in santa clara, Marianne Favro, nbc bay area news. Thank you, marianne. Just when you thought you wouldnt see again empty stores, they are back, back in the bay area, especially for paper goods, cleaning supplies, targets, walmarts, costcos, other chains have temporarily sold out. They said theres no shortage of products, just that people are starting to load up on them concerned about a possible lockdown. Most of these stores though are limiting one per customer. Safety concerns are also hitting manufacturers. Absolutely for sure any business any loistics business right now or any Manufacturing Business is struggling to make sure that they dont get their people sick. And thats slowing down the adjustment as well. Manufacturers and stores insist theres no shortage of the products. They say theres no need to horde them, but again they are limiting to one per customer. Jessica, weve been talking a lot about the surge of cases, what about the surge of hospital patients. Take a look. October 18th there were 87 Covid Patients in Santa Clara County hospitals. Lets go to november 15th, just a couple days ago, 145 patients. That is concerning for doctors. In San Francisco now, a similar trend. October 18th, 17 patients. November 15th, 39 patients. Hospitals in both counties are expecting to see these numbers continue to rise as case numbers soar. All right, thank you, raj. With the hospital numbers rising, doctors say the next two weebs are critical. They say everyday decisions will determine if this surge gets out of control or somehow becomes manageable. That includes thanksgiving plans. Janelle wang joins us with insight as to what we can all do. Jessica, weve heard the advice. Hang out with your household only over the thanksgiving holiday. But that is extremely hard for many of us. We are eight months into this pandemic and we just want to spend time with our family and our loved ones. But pediatric Infectious Disease physician at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center says thanksgiving is her biggest fear right now. She sees Covid Patients and knows getting together inside with people from outside your household is a superspreader, and shes extremely concerned hospitals will be over capacity after the holiday. I again, i would really twice about coming for thanksgiving. I understand that Everyone Wants to be together and they want family to be together. But as ive said previously, we really need to do a risk assess nmt your household. You have to see who the high risk people are in your house and decide is it worth while. I understand everyones tired of covid and they just want to get together and see family. But again if you want to have thanksgiving 2021, we have to be cautious in thanksgiving 2020. But if family is coming in, what can you do to make it as safe as possible . Take a look at this. Of course wear a mask and wash your hands as much as possible. But you can also have it outside. Of course keep your distance. Try to keep your gathering short, under two hours. If you are coming in from out of town, like a college kid, drive solo. Dont come back with friends. Get tested before you come to the bay area. And after you arrive here, hang out and quarantine with your family only and get tested within three to seven days after you arrive. And dont go hugging or kissing your grandparents. Keep your distance from grandpa and grandma. So, again, once you get here, quarantine yourself. Dont go mingle outside with other friends and family. And if its too cold to hang outside for thanksgiving, one idea is to have your tables outside spread out one household per tables. The best thing is to do thanksgiving virtually, and im trying to look at an upside of that. We can look at it this way, jessica and raj, this will hopefully be our only thanksgiving do this virtually. Thats true. Try and remain optimistic, but its hard with the situation. Thanks janelle. Symbols that i evacuated with reporter they arent exactly sure what final form this project will take, just that it needs to happen now. Those stories are critical to the historical record and to understanding this place where we live. When they bring their objects in and start talking, the flood gates open. And its about far more than whatever objects. Reporter thats because they are stories not just of a fire. Theyre of lives split into parts, the before and after, and what People Choose to carry with them from one to the other. Nbc bay area news. That was nice. So many of our communities and neighbors are going through this. Thats a great story. All right, jessica. Jeff is here. What do we ask him about . Lets bring in the microclimate forecast, we are e tracking a winter storm warning in effect until 6 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Weve had about one storm per week dumping about 6 inches to a foot of snow each time theyre across the higher elevations. That has brought us up to 24 inches at sierra at tahoe. Were going to be adding to that as we head through tonight and tomorrow as well. Look at the rainfall totals. This is where we have really seen things peak up there close to an inch at mt. St. Helena,. 94. 34 there in East San Jose foothills. Where are we right now . I wanted to show you storm ranger mobile doppler radar. Bulk of the rain is in the east bay, peninsula and south bay. Its getting the roads wet. If you have to head out to the grocery store, watch out for that. You can see from concord to san ramon, we have the rainfall thats continuing to track through the south. As we maybe a little bit more off towards the south youll see over san mateo were finding those showers, and i do think that would continue here off towards the staff into stanford, also palo alto as we head to the next 35 to 45 minutes. Its been slow going to san jose, just trace amounts of. 05 of an inch. Thats because were getting rain shadow, a lot of elevations taking the moisture and not leaving much. Well pick up a little more tonight in san jose, but dont look for totals at half inch or inch at the rate were going. Well see the storm system move to the south and beginning to break up. By storm i think there will be enough instability to have spotty chances for rain from 7 00 in the morning right through about 1 00 in the afternoon and a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm. And then well begin to clear on out as we head through wednesday night. Rainfall totals additional, doesnt look too high. I think well be at about. 05 of an inch to close to. 2 of an inch with best totals in the north bay. Sierra snow tonight and into tomorrow, a foot on average near king vail. Kirkwood could get up to 20 inches. Well have to watch out for thick ground fog. And then for the upcoming weekend, sunshine and 60s. And for the inland valleys well stay with the 60s next couple of days with the ground fog possible thursday morning. Look at the morning lows down back into the 30s.
