Just restrictions start tomorrow and halting indoor dings in counties and bars and nightclubs close and gyms have to operate at 10 capacity. A look at the bay area cases countybycounty. Yesterday, Santa Clara County led the way. Overall, the bay area has passed 130,000 confirmed cases. In the meantime, more than 80 of states are now experiencing a surge in cases with more than 11 million confirmed across the nation. At 11 00, more than 1 million children in the u. S. Have been diagnosed with covid19 according to new data released by the american economics of pediatrics and Childrens Hospital association. There were nearly 112,000 new cases reported in children last week alone. Big news the fight against covid19. Moderna says that it has a vaccine 94. 5 effective. This is after pfizer revealed their vaccine that 90 effectivity. We are hear now on what is next with these vaccines and Cierra Johnson is live with more on the vaccines and what dr. Fauci is saying. Reporter good morning. That update from moderna is, in fact, promising. What some in the pharmaceutical world and calling it a gamechanger. There are now two potential vaccines from two drugmakers both with high efficacy rates and both in the late stage trials. Dr. Anthony fauci has live on today show this morning to talk about that race for a vaccine. Covid fatigue and how the transition at the white house impacts how the nation gets ahold of there virus. Dr. Fauci said he served in six different administrations and seen a number of transfers of pour and emphasized a smooth transfer of power is critical and he mentioned several viable vaccines from several drugmakers available to consumers with the two vaccines. With the discussions of vaccines, dr. Fauci warned we werent there yet. And that the next few months are critical because that virus is not slowing down. Take a listen. The virus is not going to stop and call a timeout while things change. The virus is just going to keep going. The process is just going to keep going. This is something that just now going into very, very strong right direction. The vaccines are effective. We want to get it approved as quickly as we possibly can and get doses to people starting in december and we want to really get the ball rolling as we get into january, february, and march. We want to smooth a process for that and the way you do that is by essentially having the two groups speak to each other and exchange information. Reporter this update on another vaccine comes at a crucial time as the nation hits an unfortunate milestone. The u. S. Has now passed 11 million cases and comes as many cities and states tighten their restrictions. The goal at this point is to slow the spread as the nation enters the holiday season. Where does california stand in regards to cases . Covid hospitalizations right now have reached 3600 as of saturday. That number reflects a surge in cases the week before, 2900, that is 27 increase from the week before. The last time we hit those numbers was on september 1st. Turning back to vaccines for a moment. Its worth highlighting that there are two big differences in the vaccines. One of the biggest being how moderna is stored. Moderna vaccine can be stored 36 to 46 degrees fahrenheit and equivalent to a standard refrigerator and wouldnt require subzero refridge radiati refrigerator. Race for a vaccine. Uk Health Secretary says that britain is working closely with pfizer. He says that if pfizers vaccine is declared safe and effective the country could be ready december 1st to give it to the most atrisk group and the rest of the rollout likely take place in early 2021. We are seeing that happening. At the same time, that we are watching the storm system that will be moving in. We get a look where it is now, we can see the system is really drawing a lot of moisture from the pacific and moving into the pacific northwest. This will be moving fairly quickly through the bay area and we are expecting the timing to start by tomorrow morning in the north bay and then moving through parts of the south bay and east bay during the afternoon. We are going to see a pretty wet tuesday on tap and moving out on wednesday, we will talk about how much rain we may measure as this system moves through. What you can expect as that rain moves in, ill have more on that coming up in the micro climate forecast. Turning to the president ial transition. President trumps former chief of staff says the president is putting america in danger by not allowing joe biden to prepare his presidency. Scott mcgrew, i know mr. Biden is not able to get the information he needs to make that transition as smoothly as possible. Thats right. It could have very serious ramifications. Remember the 9 11 report said the delay in president george w. Bush transition after the 2000 election could have been a factor how unprepared we were for the september 11th attacks. We are under attack right now from a pandemic. More americans died this past weekend, just yesterday, than died on september 11th. John kelly, the former chief of staff said, quote. Biden and harris can prepare on their own but the idea behind our peaceful transition of power is that one president helps another. President trumps own National Security adviser this morning said it appears to him biden won. He is the National Security adviser speaking at an Online Security conference. Obrien compared this past election to bush gore. That is not a solid comparison. Bush gore was essentially a tie. One state was contested but take a look. The 2020 election is nowhere near a tie. President trump lost. Right now, its hard for so many families dealing with the pandemic whether youre laid off or just experiencing hard times. The need is so great right now, its really simple for a lot of people who can to really donate and be a part of this. Talk about how people with come to safeway and how easy it is youre making it for them to help out. Here at safeway, there is an opportunity for any customers or others in the community to come and donate and it makes a financial contribution to the food banks of the bay area. And, again, its such a critical time right now. Its a huge relief and help to our food banks around the bay area. I know a lot of people you go in, you have a tear sheet and you can just give it to the person at the register and say, you know, i want to donate or you can tell them when you get there, that way it doesnt make it hard for people to donate if they want to so its a great way if youre out there it really is simple to do. We want to talk about the food banks that are a part of this. Talk to me about how many people you all help in a given year and how that is different this year. Speaking for the food banks in contra costa, we have seen an increased need in our community. We are serving over a hundred thousand more clients every month at our Distribution Sites. Just before the pandemic, we were serving about 178,000 clients per month. W we are now at over 280,000 per month and that is over 100,000 more per month and translates into 65 more food distributed every month versus last year. When you talk about food distributions, i know a lot of times you have people come and volunteer and bag the food. How are you doing that this year during the pandemic and if people are interested in helping, how can they do that . Im so glad you asked that. We absolutely need volunteers throughout the bay area. We have an increased need in sorting produce, helping with supplemental emergency boxes. And out at our volunteer Distribution Sites we need help as well. We have certainly implemented all of the social distancing practices, masks, lots of hand washing and everything we can to have the safety protocols that will keep our volunteers and clients safe. But then by tomorrow, that is all about to change as a cold front moves through. We will see some rain moving from northtosouth. The rest of the week, our temperatures impact to more normal weather as we are going to see that sunshine returning but i wanted to take you to what is happening right now with this mainly hurricane heading toward nicaragua once again. It is really heart breaking to see this happening. A category 5 hurricane headed into Central America. We know just a couple of weeks ago this was hit by a category 4 hurricane that was eta. This is slowly making its way off towards the west and right now, it has wind speeds 160 Miles Per Hour we are expecting this to make landfall later today, breaking so many records and setting a lot of history here. So this is something we will be watching here at home. While we are seeing some sunshine here as we take a live look outside in dublin, the temperature right now at 63 degrees. We have a light wind but we have had some winds picking up, especially for parts of the coastline moving over toward the east bay and because we are getting ready for some changes over the next 24 hours as this cold front starts to move in. Rain still well to the north of us but go through the time line what you can expect here. The computer models are robust with how much rain we could see out of this system. Look at the 8 00 hour tomorrow morning, this is while a lot of people are heading out to work. We are starting to see bright reds here indicating some heavier rain and there may be some pockets of really high winds and heavy rain. Just briefly. Then the system continues to move its way to the south. By noon, we will see it moving in the san francisco, parts of the peninsula and over toward the east bay and approaching the south bay. By the evening, we are seeing a lot of the heavier rain clearing out but there still looks to be lingering showers back behind that main initial line of showers moving through with a cold front. Even into wednesday morning, we are still seeing some lingering rain and we will be moving through so that will add on top of the rainfall totals that we could see which, of course, at this point, it is needed because we are in an streextreme drough. Rainfall totals across the bay area could reach from a quarter inch of rain not so much in san jose but there could be up to threequarters inch of rain or more in parts of the north bay so that would be great. We are looking at pretty decent snowfall totals in parts of the sierra up to 21 inches of snow in kingvale. So great for the resorts.
