Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Hi, everybody, good morning. Welcome to today. Good to have you with us. You see the tree . Yeah, it arrived on saturday. Were happy to see it here. We do have a lot to get to this morning, including that spectacular launch by spacex and nasa. It went off without a hitch. There was an issue that had to be addressed a few hours before flight. Tom costello will have details in a live report coming up. We are also looking forward to speaking live this morning with dr. Anthony fauci and theres a lot to talk about. Breaking news just out. Another vaccine candidate showing great promise. Lets get right to nbc National CorrespondentMiguel Almaguer who has the information for us. Miguel, the company is moderna. Tell us about it. Reporter yeah, thats good news thats welcomed on the heels of so much loss. The cdc predicts up to 35,000 more deaths by december, the nation now surpassing 11 million cases. As you mentioned, signs of progress breaking just now. Pharmaceutical Company Moderna announcing early results of its vaccine trial. This morning another potential breakthrough in the battle against covid, a vaccine developed by moderna showing a 94. 5 efficacy rate in a trial with 30,000 participants. The companys president telling us the first doses could be rolled out as soon as december, if the fda authorizes it for emergency use. What does this mean for americans at home . It means some hope that we are going to beat this thing. Were going to beat it sooner rather than later. Reporter moderna says the independent committee analyzing its data did not report any significant safety concerns, clearing a major hurdle. The nations top Infectious Disease doctor says he hopes the promise of vaccines motivates americans to fully embrace Public Health measures. People are worn out about this, but weve got to hang in there a bit longer. Reporter covid cases are still skyrocketing across the u. S. A million new infections added in the last week alone. We are in a very dangerous period. The most dangerous Public Health period since 1918. Reporter state and local Health Officials are responding with new restrictions. Washington state now banning Indoor Service at bars and restaurants, and closing gyms and similar businesses for four weeks. Colorado hitting a Record Number of singleday cases and hospitalizations, as its governor warns against holiday gatherings. Its a very important caution for people not to play russian roulette over thanksgiving. You wouldnt do it with a gun, and you shouldnt do it with a virus. Reporter chicagos mayor issuing a 30day stayathome advisory. Residents are only to go out for essential needs. While in minnesota, sundays obituary section of the startribune was 10 1 2 pages, a grim symbol of a pandemic season growing darker by the day. One big difference between the Moderna Vaccine and one developed by pfizer that also reported very promising results, moderna says its vaccine doesnt need to be kept at extremely low temperatures to remain stable. That could help with shipping and distribution. And that brings us to dr. Anthony fauci, director of National Institutes allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the governments Coronavirus Task force. Dr. Fauci, good morning to you. Youve got to be pleased about these early results from moderna showing their vaccine candidate to be 94. 5 effective. Do you anticipate that it will get emergency use approval from the fda, and how soon . Well, we all anticipate it will i dont want to get ahead of the fda. But the data are striking, savannah, theyre really quite impressive 94. 5 efficacy there were 95 events 5 of them in the Vaccine Group and 90 of them in the placebo group. That is really quite impressive and really is something that foretells an impact on this outbreak together with a vaccine that you know just last week was shown to be comparably effective with the pfizer. So now we have two vaccines that are really quite effective so i think this is a really strong step forward to where we want to be about getting control of this outbreak. And i wont hold you to it because i recognize that its the fda that determines emergency use approval, but the general timeline you and i have been talking about timelines since going back to march what do you think the timeline is for these vaccine candidates to be available . Shots in the arm yeah, what i think is going to happen is its going to be all hands on deck. Everybody will do it correctly, theyre not going to cut any corners but do it quickly. We project by the end of december that there will be doses of Vaccines Available for individuals in the higher risk category from both companies we hope and this is something were looking forward to. And real quickly, there are other companies that are obviously in stage three clinical trials. Do you anticipate that we could end up with three, four, five efficacious vaccines i think thats quite conceivable that will occur. One of the things thats common about these vaccines, the platforms are different, but the moderna and the pfizer ones are similar, but the other types of vaccine platforms are using whats called the spike protein of the coronavirus. Something that has been researched very intensively right in our own group at the nih at the Vaccine Research center to put it in the kind of confirmation that is optimum to induce a good immune response. Virtually all of the other vaccines rely on that spike protein. So to me that gives me hope that more than these two will also be effective. I knew i was in trouble when i got into spike protein, so lets talk about how this could work were obviously in the middle of a transition between the Trump Administration and the Incoming Biden Administration how concerned are you that the white house has still not green lighted the transition so that folks on your side of things can be talking to the Incoming Biden Administration well, savannah, obviously its something were concerned about. As you know, ive served in six administrations so ive seen a number of transitions. And i know that transitions are very important to get a smooth, essentially as i use the metaphor, essentially passing a baton without stopping running you just want things to go very smoothly so hopefully well see that soon transitions are important. Well, and in particular just to put a fine point on it, is it, boy, it would be nice to have a smooth transition or is it particularly critical we just talked about this timeline, december, january, where vaccines are going to be stood up people are going to need to get these vaccines that is the very transition. The doctor in charge for the Trump Administration says he hopes and he does not want to see that process disrupted in any way. I totally agree with him very much so. I mean the virus is not going to stop and call a timeout while things change. The virus is just going to keep going. The process is just going to keep going this is something that just is now going in the very, very strong right direction the vaccines are effective we want to get it approved as quickly as we possibly can we want to get doses to people starting in december then we want to really get the ball rolling as we get into january, february and march. We want a smooth process with that the way you do that is by essentially having the two groups speak to each other and exchange information. You mentioned the Vaccine Research is going in the right direction. The virus is going in the wrong direction. We just had 145,000 cases daily. Thats the sevenday daily average. 1,100 deaths, thats the daily average. Is this the dark winter that you and others have warned about im afraid that it can be but we can do something about it, savannah i keep saying that over and over yes, its a very serious situation. We know that this covid fatigue that people are just tired of the kinds of restrictions, but there are fundamental things that we talk about all the time that ive discussed with you many times the physical distancing, the washing of hands, the universal wearing of masking, the staying away from crowds if we do that uniformly throughout the country, we dont have to accept major surges. We can blunt them. And then with the vaccine, as i use it i say help is on the way. It certainly is. But the fact that help is on the way should spur us even more to double down on some of the Public Health measures, to be able to use the combination of a vaccine and Public Health measures to turn this thing around we can do it i know you yourself have not advised a national lockdown. There are individual cities and states who are implementing stricter measures. Dr. Scott atlas, who is the white house advisor to the president on the coronavirus tweeted last night, the only way this stops is if people rise up. You get what you accept. Freedommatters. Step up. And then he had to add another tweet to say, oh, hey, i wasnt talking about violence what do you think of that message . You know, i totally disagree with it. I made no secret of that i dont want to say anything against dr. Atlas as a person but i totally disagree with the stand he takes i just do, period. Dr. Fauci, thank you very much we appreciate your time this morning. Take care. Thank you good to be with you. Thank you all right, its now 12 minutes after the hour look whos back in studio 1a craig melvin has the latest on the election fallout for us. Good morning. Hey, good to see you guys you mentioned the transition with dr. Fauci a few moments ago. Today president elect joe biden expected to focus on his vision for the nations economy this as President Trump briefly took a first step toward admitting he actually lost the election while still not conceding, though. Geoff bennett has the very latest from both camps geoff, good morning to you. Reporter craig, good morning. More than a week after joe biden won the election, President Trump is still refusing to concede the race, even tweeting overnight in all caps, i won the election which of course is not the case. But all of it means that the biden team is still locked out of Critical Data and resources meant to ensure a smooth transition this morning joe bidens president ial transition pushing forward, despite the Trump Administrations roadblocks. The president elect and future vp set to deliver remarks today focused on the countrys economic recovery. As bidens new chief of staff raises warnings about the dangers of delaying the pandemic planning. People making plans to implement that vaccine, our experts need to talk to those people as soon as possible so Nothing Drops in this change of power. Reporter on sunday the president seemingly acknowledged his loss for the first time with two words in a tweet he won backtracking roughly 90 minutes later writing in another tweet i concede nothing. Donald trumps twitter feed doesnt make joe biden president or not president the American People did that. Reporter all of it following violent clashes in the Nations Capital over the election results. Trump supporters rejecting the outcome of the race, echoing the president s false claims of fraud. More than 20 people were arrested in what started as relatively peaceful demonstrations, with thousands rallying for President Trump. Were never going to accept joe biden as the president of the united states. Reporter but the calls for mr. Trump to concede are growing, on both sides of the aisle. Joe biden is the president elect, and that transition for the countrys sake, its important for a normal transition to start the idea that he continues to tell his supporters that the only reason he may have lost this election is because of fraud is an absolutely disgraceful, unamerican thing to do. Reporter former president barack obama weighing in too when your time is up, then it is your job to put the Country First and think beyond your own ego and your own interests and your own disappointments my advice to President Trump is if you want at this late stage in the game to be remembered as somebody who put Country First, its time for you to do the same thing. Reporter now, even as joe biden projects calm and confidence as it relates to these delays, im told the view within the campaign is that the longer it goes, the worse it gets and it could endanger a future federal response to the Coronavirus Crisis craig. Geoff bennett for us in wilmington thank you. Let us get a first check of the forecast and that child weather that struck in the northeast overnight. Good morning, dylan. Did you hear it last night . Yes the rain coming down, the wind that was out there we saw gusts about 40 to 60 Miles Per Hour we had a Tornado Warning for new york city itself and that is on average typical about once a year but certainly never in november. We had significant flooding out in western pennsylvania. We also had just lots of wind damage reports as those winds were very, very gusty. It was a wild evening. We picked up more than 287 reports of wind damage as this cold front moved to the east you can see most of them around ohio, pennsylvania, new york and several of those in the philadelphia new york city area. Its still going to be windy today and much colder than yesterday too so its going to be very, very brisk. Temperatures will be on the colder side along with those winds, up to 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour so youll want to bundle up. Also keep in mind that colder northwest wind crosses over the very unfrozen great lakes right now and lakeeffect snow will start to kick in, especially in the Higher Elevations off of lake erie and lake ontario we could see 2 to 4 inches of snow but some areas just south of watertown where the elevation is a little bit higher, we could see 5 to 6 inches of that lakeeffect snow thats a look at the weather across the country well get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. Were tracking our next round of rain set to move in tomorrow. But were also clear and also very warm for today. The crew of spacex spaceship resilience is safely in orbit this morning after last nights earthrumbling liftoff from the Kennedy Space center. The mission marks a big turning point for nasa as private Companies Take over the job of taking astronauts into space. Nbcs tom costello is there for us. Youve seen a lot of liftoffs, tom. How does this size up . Cool, aweinspiring, chest pounding, it never gets old. Its really phenomenal. And we have a little bit of concern before liftoff because they thought they had a problem with the seal around the hatch, but they resolved that very quickly. And so now with this mission, nasa and spacex hand in glove. Nasa is very much back in the full Space Operations business. By the way, this is the biggest launch in nine years. Ignition, liftoff. Roaring off one of the most historic launch pads at the Kennedy Space center, nasas very future in the hands of spacex. Roger, 1 alpha. God speed resilience. A spaceship dubbed resilience accelerating into the night sky and making a bee line up the east coast. In a series of decimal precise maneuvers for which spacex has become notorious. Station pressure confirmed. And you see that stage separation has confirmed. There goes that mvac engine. Stage two. The crew is now on their way to the International Space station. Guiding the first stage tage rocket booster onto a ship in the Atlantic Ocean so it can be used again. And i believe weve had touchdown on the drone ship. Inside the spaceship, four astronauts mike hopkins, pilot victor glover, Mission SpecialistShannon Walker and a japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi headed for a sixmonth mission on the space station. That was one heck of a ride there was a lot of smiles. But just hours after the adrenaline surge of launch, all four were told to get some rest. Just part of the job. These folks know what theyre doing. Theyre very experienced they know that they have got to get their rest. All four covidfree after quarantining for two weeks though spacex founder elon musk was not allowed at the space center after he contracted covid. Nasa is now relying on spacex and eventually boeing to safeguard the lives of american astronauts headed for the space station, while nasa focuses on returning to the moon and one day mars the stakes could not be higher. Make no mistake, when youre flying into space, theres always risk and we will always be diligent. This morning after yet another engineering tour de force, this crew of four is headed for a latenight rendezvous with the space station. About 11 15 p. M. Or so east coast time we did have a little bit of a concern just after about two hours after launch when nasa tweeted out that they were having a problem with the heaters onboard inside that spaceship, the propellants were not working properly, not heating things up properly nasa said theyre troubleshooting to heat the fuel onboard the crew dragon. Temperatures remain stable, crew remains safe they trouble shot the whole thing and found out they were functioning properly, so no issues so thats good news. You wouldnt want to be up there freezing without your heaters working but everything working pretty well right now. There was one other unexpected thing we were hearing about, an extra passenger who snuck onboard. Yoda, a baby yoda made a trip you know, nasa has this custom right now or the astronauts do where they bring up some sort of a stuffed animal as their zero g indicator. So baby yoda from the disney movie was the choice for these astronauts you know, back in the summer, the two astronauts on the test mission, they did the same thing. They brought up a dinosaur that their kids loved so baby yoda now is the fifth member of this crew headed for the space station. Tom doesnt sound all that familiar from baby yoda. Its actually a child from the show mandalorian and it is a show that i highly recommend. I didnt say it i didnt say it because i thought im going to butcher it. Im just going to say baby yoda and the moms will pick it up. Youve got to check it out. Al rokers head is exploding right now. Hes super excited. Thank you so much. That was fun. And theres one airline thats starting something new, designed to keep flights covidfree nbcs Gabe Gutierrez is at Newark Liberty international airport. Gabe, good morning. Reporter craig, good morning. Here at newark, united will be offering select flights to london where everyone on board from passengers to crew will be required to test negative for coronavirus before takeoff its the latest move the Airline Industry hopes will take off, free rapid covid tests, part of a fourweek trial. Starting today on select united flights from newark to london, all passengers over the age of 2 will be required to take the test before boarding flight crews also tested the airline has set up a special onsite testing facility near the departure gate anyone whos positive wont be allowed to board those who decline to be tested will be rebooked onto other flights. Masks will still be required on the plane. Testing is a way where we can both be safe and still open up the world economy. For now those arriving in the uk will still be required to quarantine for 14 days, even with a negative test the airline hopes it will help pave the way for more safe travel corridors on some major routes, both domestically and internationally. The goal is to shore up Consumer Confidence that you are on a plane with everyone whos negative, but also to provide data to the u. S. This breaking news on the coronavirus, and its good news on the vaccine front. A second major drug maker, moderna, says its potential vaccine appears to be extremely effective. Nbc National CorrespondentMiguel Almaguer joins us with the latest on this breaking news. Miguel, good morning. Savannah, good morning. There is certainly good news and that is welcome news. In a trial with 30,000 participants, moderna says their vaccine could be rolled out as early as december if the fda authorizes it for emergency use. As you mentioned, moderna says its vaccine is 94. 5 effective. An independent company analyzing its data did not report any significant safety concerns. It comes after drug maker pfizer said its vaccine was about 90 effective. The big difference between the two, moderna says its vaccine does not need to be refrigerated at extremely low temperatures. This is a major breakthrough in getting the nation vaccinated. Whats what dr. Fauci told savannah just a while ago. Now we have two vaccines that are quite effective so i think this is a strong step forward to where we want to be getting control of this outbreak. Reporter that comes on the heels of so much loss. Were going to talk with kim in just a moment but first nbcs kathy park with the back story reporter this morning, a big breakthrough in Major League Baseball the Miami Marlins naming kim ng the teams next general manager. Theres a big wave of girls and women who want to work in baseball, and now its easy to turn to someone and say you will not have to be the first, this is who you can look forward. Reporter an historic trial blazing a trail for others to follow kathy park, nbc news, new york. Savannah and i are beaming. Lets say good morning to the history maker herself, general manager ng good morning, its great to see you. Good morning. Thanks so much for having me today. We loved watching that piece about you. Will you just tell us, i know this has been a long time coming, but the moment you learned that this job was yours. The moment, the second i actually didnt believe it i was in utter disbelief i generally play things fairly close to the vest, and derek jeter, we were on zoom, looked at me and he said, you can at least smile. He said you kind of started but then you stopped at that point i think i got a little bit overwhelmed just in terms of, you know, realizing it had been so many years in the making and it was finally here its been a long road i was reading about your history. I thought about this young lady in 1990 walking in as an intern to the Chicago White sox and what she would think to see you now. Are you letting yourself reflect back on this decadeslong journey youve had in baseball i will say it was hard not to on friday. As soon as i heard, i was really sort of off to the races my minding was just racing with what i had to get done but friday was really a day of reflection after it was announced, because i got just so many emails and text messages, overwhelming support and love and congratulations. So i did allow myself friday to feel that. But its just been a tremendous 72 hours well, youre getting love from everywhere. I saw Michelle Obama tweet, Trisha Yearwood tweet. Youre getting them from everywhere i was struck by something thath. Joe torre said back in 2015. That was five years ago. This is what he said about you. I always talk her up at owners meetings, he said. At some point Somebody Just has to ignore the fact that shes a woman and just make a baseball decision if they do that, then i think she will get an opportunity somewhere. So i guess my question is, is this all about just patience because i would imagine after you have applied for several gm jobs and not gotten them that some people might have just thrown up their arms and said, look, this isnt for me. So was it patience or what kind of just kept you going yeah, absolutely it was patience and perseverance. After the first handful of times, you do, you get a little bit dejected and its hard its hard because Everybody Knows whats going on in your life and that you, quote, failed again. But i think theres no other choice but to keep going on and to keep pushing through. Ive always said if it never happened, i wouldnt ever look at my career as a failure, absolutely the opposite. I think ive had a great career and this is icing on the cake. Look at you now i actually think thats a more valuable lesson that you could teach, that persistence and resilience here it has all worked out well be cheering for you. Were really, really honored by your presence. Thanks for being with us. Way to go, kim. Thank you so much appreciate it. Lets get a check of the weather from dylan i bet youre inspired. Oh, i loved just hearing her talk, it was awesome absolutely inspiring we have some wild weather from yesterday thats finally calming down well lose the rain across the northeast but with windy conditions sticking around, lakeeff good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. We have dry weather today, but we will see that storm system moving in tomorrow. Starting out first in the north bay, bring something rain. Quick round of some heavy rain for parts of the north bay. As it continues to make its way across the bay area tomorrow afternoon, a lot of the heavier rain will fall a little lighter for parts of the east bay as well as the south bay. Then as we go through the forecast, mostly our temperatures reaching from the 70s to the 60s for the rest of the week. And thats and thats your latest forecast back over to you guys. Thank you, dylan. Now to todays Holiday Consumer thanksgiving just ten short days away we want to help you get ready for whats going to be a holiday unlike any other. Thats because the cdc recently advised that small household gatherings are an important contributor to the rise in covid19 cases and some states are actually limiting how many people you can have in your home. So how can you celebrate safely here to break things down and answer your questions, our dynamic duo oh, no, its a trio dr. John, lets start with you everybody wants to know, should we even get together for thanksgiving this year, even if its just extended family, grandma, grandpa, uncle, aunt, is that okay you want to be extra careful this thanksgiving. The safest way to celebrate is just with members of your own household. The next level of safety is those in your quarantine bubble. Those associated with in the last couple of months and anybody beyond that, you want to make sure they are starting to quarantining right now outside of your bubble. When they come over they wear masks and have social distancing. Then when they come over, they wear masks and social distance one area of concern, if you have anybody in the house thats elderly or with medical conditions that put them at increased risk, then you want to double down on those masks and social distancing. Its extremely important. Our next question comes from robin on facebook. Shes selfquarantining until thanksgiving but has an important question lets listen. Do you think it would be beneficial for us to do a test prior to thanksgiving dinner what do you say, dr. John savannah, this is kind of a yes no answer. Remember, it only gives you a snapshot of whats happening that day you could test negative tomorrow and test positive tomorrow but if you quarantine the appropriate time period, thats 14 days. If you can quarantine the full time and get tested and get the test results before you go to thanksgiving dinner, that will give you some assurance that you dont have coronavirus you still want to wear masks, social distance and remember you want to be quarantining beginning today if youre going for that special holiday. No extended family, just your immediate family how do you make sure that is safe couple of things you want to do if youre traveling, make sure you limit interactions if its a short distance, going by car can be the best way if you go by airplane, airplanes are fairly safe but the airports before and after are concerning so wear a mask, social distance and clean your hands if youre with people outside your own household, you want to wear masks, social distance. Except during meal time. During meal time you want it outside instead of inside if you can. If you can go to the garage, open the garage door if its warm enough and have the table in there, its not the fanciest environment but its one of the safer environments if you cant go outside because of weather. And instead of a kids table this year, remember nobody wanted to be at the kids table, make it Little Family tables so all the tables are own family hubs and make sure those tables are social distanced remember, youre taking your mask off to eat and thats a time period things can happen. With the cdc guidance in mind, a lot of our thanksgiving celebrations will be virtual vicky nguyen has ideas for that. But lets start with the virtual stuff, vick. We have actually a question from michael on facebook. Hes got a pointed question. Take a look. My wife and i have hosted thanksgiving for the last 24 years. This year we plan on doing it by zoom how can we make it feel as normal as possible good for you, michael, 24 years, thats fantastic. Its a question im asking an millions of americans are asking as well. First figure out how many people wanting to join you virtually. If its a big number, keep in mind these big video calls can feel tedious so bear with me but i have an idea its thanksgiving in shifts. So you do appetizers with one family then connect with another over a toast, maybe a third at dessert time that way you feel like youre having quality time and its not everybody all at once. We know thanksgiving is about food so maybe if you have a signature dish, share the recipe this year, make something somebody else would make and if you can, drop off a dish at a nearby relatives house and leave it at the door remember if youre doing it with family or a friendsgiving, its a chance to remember what were thankful for, our friends, our family and hopefully our health. A lot of people get invited and dont want to go but dont know how to say no so whats the way to back out of that . Be polite, be firm and be honest about it. Youre never going to have a better excuse to get out of thanksgiving an a worldwide pandemic if you just dont want to get together in person, do the 10 minute, 15 minute zoom if youre not sad about celebrating solo, let your introvert flag fly this is your year. This is your year. And one last thing. Right outside of my house theres one of those city mds. The lines for tests are out the door and down the street so what should we know if were waiting for those. Call ahead and see if you can get an appointment also on that call ask what is it going to cost me most Health Insurance does cover this testing but you want to know that ahead of time. If you dont have Health Insurance, go to one of the public sites remember what dr. John torres was saying, do you really need a test its just a snapshot in time it is not a cureall for everything else. Two tests, the rapid one gives you a result right away but you could get a false negative the pcr is the Gold Standard but results take a few days. Lets turn to nbcs Senior Business correspondent, stephanie ruhle. Steph, the holidays, one of those times a lot of families use it as a time to give back. It seems this would be the perfect year to give back to some local mom and pop restaurants. Absolutely. This is the year where you might want to consider not cooking at home you know, weve done so much cooking, make this the year you order. Were seeing a Record Number of local restaurants and Grocery Stores offering a full thanksgiving meal. All you need to do is order. But this is important. If you can, pick it up yourself. A lot of very popular Delivery Services are charging those restaurants 15 to 30 , so if you can pick it up, go that direction. Plus, how about bakeries make this the year youre not making your own apple or pumpkin pie. Call your local bakery so they know how much supplies they need and try to order help those businesses. Speaking of businesses, food banks, food pantries, again a lot of folks like to go and volunteer at those places. You might not be able to go in person, but you can still give go to feedingamerica. Org or foodpantries. Org to find out about your local spots they may need a monetary donation or have a Shopping List for you. Think boxed stuffing, canned vegetables we talked about people not traveling. Look around your neighborhood. If you have older people or singles that are going to be alone, send an extra meal their way. Great tips. Steph, thank you thanks to dr. John and thanks to vicky nguyen as well. Just ahead, hoda has got a mustsee interview with Matthew Mcconaughey. Yeah, we had a real nice conversation about his powerful new memoirs some childhood drama that shaped him and also about giving back after this good morning to you. Its 8 26. Im marcus washington. Asking the mayor to allow him to hire more prosecutors to keep up with the case load, especially when it comes to criminal cases. City departments right now are in hiring freeze and have been so ever since the revenues took a nosedive in the spring. Lets get a look at that forecast for you today. And some nice weather for us today, kari. Its going to be beautiful today. And were starting out mild. Well reach into the mid70s. But then by tomorrow, well be tracking some rain so lets go through the timeline. Well start to see some showers moving into the north bay by late morning and continuing to move from north to south into tomorrow afternoon. A lot of it turning to much lighter by wednesday morning. So were going to see this moving through fairly quickly. The rest of the forecast is dry. But it will be much cooler for the rest of the week once that cold front moves through. And well have some nice and quiet weather leading into the weekend. Marcus . Thanks, kari. Ill have another local news update coming up in 30 minutes. Ill see you then. By harnessing californias abundant wind and solar energy, we have the power to take on climate change. Use less from 4 to 9 pm to keep california golden. Stuffing is going to take it. Just ahead guys, also, i cant wait to share a conversation i had with oscar winner Matthew Mcconaughey his fans are getting to know him in a whole new way he has his memoir out. It is called green lights. He shared some real personal stories from his past and helped him on his way. Plus you know whos here, the pioneer woman herself, ree drummond, and she has us buzzing this morning, because she is going to share what she believes is to be the absolute best sandwich that shes ever made. This weve got to see. Looking forward. I see some hoagies there. Whats coming up on the third hour, d. Charles and diana themselves. We will catch up with the stars of the crowns new season. Cant wait for that. And tomorrow on today, three words, all we need dolly parton love. Look forward. First, dyl, lets get a check of the weather. This week is starting off pretty windy in the northeast. We had that yesterday, thats the way the weekend ended and now were starting off with the wind and enough cold air to make lakeeffect snow kick in its stormy in the Pacific Northwest with rain and mountain snow we could see several inches in the Higher Elevations. In the middle of the week well see warmer weather begin to move into the middle of the country, temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Colder in the northeast as we see highs across Northern New England below freezing highs only in the upper 20s. Then we finish off the week with a lot of sunshine except for the western great lakes, we could see spotty showers it warms up along the east coast and falllike temperature goes into the west coast with more wet and snowy weather in the Pacific Northwest. Thats a look at the wea good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. As we take a look at our high temperatures for today, get out there and enjoy it. Were going to have well above normal temperatures today reaching into the upper 60s near the coast and upper 70s for the inland areas. As we go through the rest of the forecast, were going to see some rain moving in starting tomorrow in the morning for parts of the north bay and then moving out by wednesday. Well have some much cooler weather by the end of the week as the sunshine returns. And that continues into the weekend. And thats your latest forecast craig. It feels like a good time for some popstart. Lets do it well start with last nights peoples Choice Awards featuring two mega stars accepting honors. Tyler perry was named this years peoples champion he had a very moving speech about pushing forward through lifes challenges. Had i given up when i was homeless, when i was sleeping in my car, when i was hungry, had i given up, these people that you see on this screen would not be part of my dreams. They are people who are tied into your dream and your destiny and you are worthy of getting to your goal. Keep digging dont stop. How great is he he matches the background. Its beautiful. Heres the thing i love about tyler perry, he has brought so many people with him, pulled them up on a ladder. And his whole studio that you went and visited you also saw Jennifer Lopez who received the other special award. She was named the peoples icon of 2020 and reflected on whats been a tough year and how her approach to life is reflected in her career i approach my work and my career the same way that i approach my life i lead with love, i feel with my heart and i always try to speak with truth in telling stories, singing songs, and performing. I do so with the purpose of bringing a little happiness, creating beauty and inspiring others to do the same. Love. Love her cup congratulates toter how about that . Big congratulates to tyler perry and Jennifer Lopez. It is time once again for another foodrelated bracket challenge. Friends, if you thought our halloween candy bracket divided americans, and it did, just wait this morning we are launching our sidesgiving bracket challenge. Before i begin on the 16 sides, i want to mention that turkey is not listed, because turkey is the protein, and it is the main. Gravy gets the pass. We know him as an oscar winner, a philanthropist, proud dad of three, husband but hes sharing details about his life and is also giving back this Holiday Season in a special way. Matthew mcconaughey is one of the biggest names in hollywood the Academy Awardwinning actor who is known for his signature catch phrase all right, all right, all right. How you doing . Is now adding author to his resume with his bestselling new memoir green light. This book, matthew, is i dont know what i expected, but i didnt expect everything from poems to prayers to stories, inspiration to such brutal truth in it. You had journals over the years and out this game . Yeah, ive been keeping them for 36 years i was thinking, i should go see if i should write something, if theres a book in there. It was jarring when you start the book i dont know what i was expecting your household to be like, but when i started reading the initial stories of what was a real violent day between your mom and dad, how they were physically fighting. Your mom broke your dads nose they end us kissing and you said the love was real. It was bloody sometimes, but never in question. Were you not scared as a kid witnessing all this stuff that was going on around you . My mother has read the book and said every one of those you told are true on me and your father but i wish you would have added some more of the times when we were sitting around hugging and having a great time, which was 99 of the time. My mom and dad were divorced twice, married three times if that was inverted, the love would not have won, they would have been divorced three times i tell those violent stories because im like, oh, its being tested, it could break in hindsight, it never had a chance of breaking when you look back as grownup as those moments because i think it would be tough for any kid. Do you see those and look and say those i dont know what you call it but would you call it abuse no. Im not in denial of what happened what i saw was not abuse my mom said thats what i needed to communicate my mom, whos 88 whos in the other room would come in and go im the one who started every one of those fights. Jim was the peaceful one going, katie, can we just talk . Despite his parents complicated relationship, one of his greatest aspirations was off camera. Every little boy and girl has a dream. I dream of being a firefighter or astronaut, and you say that your dream as a kid was being a dad. Was that because you looked at your dad and said, yeah, man, thats what i want to be. The men he would introduce me to, you look them in the eye, handshake, good to meet you, sir. One day he introduced me to three of his friends oh, it hit me, everybody im saying sir to, the common denominator is theyre all fathers. That means you made it oh, thats success, thats how you got called a sir. If youre a dad if youre a dad, youre called a sir. In 1993 his dad died from a heart attack mcconaughey was five days into shooting dazed and confused when he received the news. It was a film that turned Matthew Mcconaughey into a household name. What did you lose that day . I lost i lost my hero, i lost my crutch i lost a man that i now today would love and dearly miss sharing a script with, talking about a character, what do you think of this, pop, what do you think about this you lose your father, you lose a loved one, that can be some of the greatest sobering periods in peoples life. What do you think your dad would think of the man youve become i think hed be proud of me i think his favorite thing hed love what ive done in my career another thing ive really missed is him with my kids. Him getting to know camilla. Matthew met his wife Camilla Alves in 2006. They married six years later and have three beautiful children together, levi, vita and livingston. Meeting her, you describe her floating. Everything i wrote, that was what came through my mind. It only took five seconds. She only moved right to left in four to five seconds i remembered it very clearly the beautiful thing is that all those things that i wrote down now that are in the book about that four seconds of that vision i saw, that was an impression. Every single thing that i saw in that impression has turned out when i got into closer inspection and gotten to know her well, turned out to be true. Dont you love when your First Impression is right . Yes. Mcconaughey here. Mcconaughey is also giving back this season honoring Community Heroes and thanking them for all the good they have done for their cities in a partnership with wild turkey, where he serves as creative director. We started a give Thanks Initiative where we could go in, shine a light on somebody whos given back to their own communities thats not looking for a spotlight. But calling them the local legends and thats who were saying thank you to. As i read your ten goals in life that you wrote back in 1992, they were become a father, find and keep the woman for me, keep my relationship with god, chase my best self, be an egotistical utilitarian, take more risks, stay close to mom and family, win an oscar for best actor. Right boom. You did it, man. I wrote that in 1992. And that still flabbergasts me now to go, wait, so subconsciously you must have really those must have been really good goals because you have gone on and you are on the way to achieving them still this many years later man. Right didnt you learn so much about the guy . He is a deep well that is a book i would really like to read because hes such a complex character and he seems like hes been so raw and honest, which is all you can really ask for a memoir. And he talked about in raising his kids now, because i asked him a little bit if he was concerned about what happened when he was a child. He said, no, he makes a conscious effort to care for his wife and care for his kids. Hearing him talk about what he saw in that house growing up is revealing. He starts the book that way its chapter 1, page 1 so yeah, hes the whole package. Wow. And we thought we knew Matthew Mcconaughey. Thank you. There is a lot more of that interview if you want to see it and the full sitdown on our website later this week. Coming up next, someone else that we love who has an incredible life story as well, well talk to the pioneer woman ree drummond about welcoming into what she is calling a bonus kid into her family and we have been teasing this all morng, been teasing this all morng, ladiines theres no bad time to start at amazon. Ree drummond is always cooking up good eats for her very hungry family but recently she swapped her spatula for a pen and wrote a bunch of fine new essays for her new book. It is called frontier follies, adventures of motherhood from the middle of nowhere. Ree is joining us from her ranch in oklahoma, and it is to great to see you. How are you . Hi, hoda and savannah, how are you this morning good morning. There is so much to get to in this beautiful book that youve written, but i think the thing thats grabbing all the headlines that stood out to us is you have a foster child and his name is jamar. And you just sort of revealed the fact that he was part of your family. I guess it was partly because jamar was like, hey, what about me youre okay to talk about me tell us a little bit about him well, jamar is my foster son. Hes been living with us for over a year and a half as i write in the book, my husband and i never really set out to become foster parents, but jamars circumstances kind of presented themselves and hes just a fullon member of our family now, i have a cooking show and other little elements of public life and because of rules and regulations with the state agencies, i wasnt able to share about jamar. Also, i felt very protective of him when he first came to live with us, so i didnt want to just thrust him out there. But after a while, you know, jamar was like, okay i feel like im being hidden from the world i was like i know. So he turned 18. I did write about him in the book i shared the essay with him before the book was published to make sure he was okay with it. But yeah, life is interesting. You just never know whats going to kind of come your way and its been its been an amazing experience you know, lots of little bumps in the road, but the same is true with my own teenage son. We see the picture. He seems to just complete your family, ree. We love him he really does in so many wonderful ways he and my younger son, todd, who is 16, are actually just the best of friends. And then jamar and bryce are also more like peers and they play football together and so but yeah two or three years ago if someone had told me i would be a foster mother, i couldnt have predicted how that would have unfolded but its been wonderful. Well, were excited to read the rest of your book and also excited what weve been teasing all day, like the best sandwich ever, apparently what are the ingredients well, i have to say in the book i say its the best sandwich i made during quarantine so basically so i have had to specify that but during the quarantine i had all of these bodies in my house for a while when it first started unfolding. My two older daughters, one of my daughters boyfriends, jamar, my two sons, my husband. So i had to make like big bulky recipes. So this is basically chuck roast and you cook it until it completely falls apart then i put it on a toasted bun, very buttery toasted bun and top it with provolone cheese put it under the broiler and melt the cheese. And then the kicker is i caramelize onions and put it on top of the finished sandwich so during the last few months, another development that happened in our family is that my daughter, alexs boyfriend proposed to her. And i think its because of this sandwich i mean shes a wonderful person, but mauricio, my future soninlaw, specifically said this is the best sandwich i have ever eaten and its one of those things if you can see inside this pot, its an enormous amount of meat, so you can just put this on, cook it, slap some rolls on a cutting board and tell everybody to dig in and help themselves. The perfect pandemic sandwich. Theres a lot of goodness going on in that house of yours. Ree, thank you for being with us this morning her book is called frontier follies, it is out tomorrow and you can preorder at today. Com shop to get the recipe, go to today. Com food.
