For a fireworks display to celebrate the election of the countrys 46th president. And so now joe biden gets to work. His transition im told officially launches tomorrow, and weve also learned that he is set to sign a shoe of executive orders slew of executive orders aimed at overturning key parts of the trump agenda including the paris climate accords, reversing the part in the world health organization, ending the muslim travel ban. A Campaign Source says that joe biden is making good on his longstanding promises. Getting to work quickly. Geoff bennett in wilmington, delaware, thank you so much. President trump meanwhile vowing to fight the Election Results saying in a statement the election is, quote, far from over, claiming on twitter that he won the election. His legal team says it is ready to take its case to court. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is at the white house for us. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Like so many things in the trump era, tradition and typical practice are not in play. So no concession, and instead talk of heading to Court Tomorrow to litigate the voting process in a number of key states. For now, President Trump remains a fighter. President trumps motorcade passed by signs of his defeat saturday as reaction to the election outcome filled the streets. [ cheers ] the president , who had sought fresh air and perhaps solace on the golf course, returned to the white house where he found something to boast about on twitter. R. 71 million legal votes, the most ever for a sitting president. While he rounded that vote total upward, his tally is an achievement on its own. Hours earlier he tweeted a false claim in all caps i won this election by a lot. In philadelphia, trump ally Rudolph Giuliani argued that pennsylvania poll workers may not have separated ballots that arrived after election day. Hes not going to concede when at least 600,000 ballots are in question. Its not my job to determine if the ballots are right or not, its their job. Give us time to pursue them. Reporter former chief of staff Mick Mulvaney writes that voters need this election to be fully litigated, to resolve various questions republicans raised. But mulvaney adds, i have every expectation that mr. Trump will be, act, and speak like a great president should win or lose. And the Trump Campaign continues to send out fundraising appeals to raise money for this litigation. The fine print shows the money could be used to retire campaign debts. Now no states have officially certified their results as of now. But expect in the days to come republicans to put more pressure on the president to recognize the outcome. Willie . Kelly odonnell at the white house. Thank you. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Great to see you on this morning after joe biden became president elect. You and i have been talking about there campaign for what feels like an eternity, a year and a half at least on sunday gettogethers. Lets talk about what happens and what this vote says about the country. Joe biden got a Record Number of votes for a president ial candidate. But it was donald trump who got 70 million votes, the second most and in fact about seven million more than he got in 2016. So what did we learn this week about america with this vote . Reporter well, the biggest takeaway i had with this election was that it means that 2016 was not a fluke. Right. You know, that to me is the most important takeaway because i think there was a lot of questions about that, was 2016 an outlier, was it because of of the candidates that the public was responding to . I think its pretty clear thats not the case. That the divide that that donald trump exploited to become president is real, and it is bigger than donald trump, right. Which there were plenty of people that were arguing that at the time. But there was look, i think this election was going to be about whether there was going to be a repudiation of not just donald trump but of trumpism. And i think that the overwhelming evidence of the election is it was a repudiation of donald trump the man but not necessarily repudiation of donald trumpism. And joe biden spoke to that last night. Spoke to those 70 million voters, talking about healing the country. So do you expect, chuck, donald trump to concede . Of course hes been talking now for weeks and months about legal challenges, about the election being rigged. Those claims seem to be getting more thin and more thin by the day. Hes had a bunch of rejected lawsuits across different states. Yeah. So there are reports this morning that some people close to him are going to approach him and say it may be time to concede this election. Do you see that coming . I think hell do it in a way that wont ever feel like a concession to him. That hell acknowledge the results without acknowledging whether he thinks it was fair and square because thats just who he is. I mean, i do think we forget the very first election, willie, that he ever participated in as a candidate were the iowa caucuses. And do you know what he said after that night . That somehow there was cheating going on and thats why ted cruz won. The point is i dont think hes ever accepted a loss fair and square. Ive never played monopoly with him but wonder if hes ever accepted losing that. You know, so i think heres what i feel like we do know about him, though, willie, is that he doesnt like to walk away from the spotlight. Hes going to find a way to try to make himself relevant during this transition in different ways. And thats the part of this that i thinks a wild card, is an unknown, and in the middle of having now to deal with the virus without the election being in the way, ill be curious to see if there is any opportunity here to see some i dont know maybe a grownup response after all this so that we can all focus on covid right now. Yeah. I mean, joe biden signaled last night that he is going to focus on covid19 beginning tomorrow during this transition period. Hes going to put together a panel of scientists to look at the problem and to come up with new strategies. So lets look ahead to a Biden Administration. Its not until january 20th, of course, when hes sworn in. Hes already talking about reports of executive orders on things like immigration and the paris climate accords and getting back together with the world health organization. What do you think the early days of a Biden Administration look like . Look, i not hopefhonestlyo see whats in the Georgia Senate runoffs. I think a lot depends on which party does control the senate. I think a lot about whether its the personnel that the Vice President , now the president elect wants to have. I mean, it that makes a that is a huge difference. I mean, i think in his ambitions youre going to hear some of the same plans whether it is Mitch Mcconnell thats majority leader or chuck schumer. But in reality, how much of it is executive order driven and how much of it is an attempt to get major legislation done is still going to have a lot to do with what happens in those Georgia Senate runoffs. We wont know until early january. A lot to talk about. Thank you so much, my friend. We will get more on meet the press when chuck is joined by republican senator mitt romney of utah and democratic congressman jim clyburn of south carolina. Straight ahead, the highs and lows of the week, including the truly breathtaking moment when a whale surfaces and scoops up a couple of kayakers in its mouth. Well show you how this turned out. When kamala walks into the white house in january, again, shes bringing millions of families and women with her. So it is a good day. It is a good day not only for the United States but a good day for the world. Reporter all eyes now shifting from the campaign to the white house where the Vice President elect will continue to chart a course all her own. While i may be the first woman in this office, i will not be the last. [ cheers ] and morgan joins me now live. Its great to see you. So weve been talking this morning about the policy implications of a new biden harris administration. But the rise of Kamala Harris to the vice presidency, as you say, means something much more to many people in this country. What message does it send . Reporter thats right. Good morning. I mean, the people we have spoken to here on the ground really describe senator harris election as sort of this welcome reprieve from a very difficult summer of race relations. Whats interesting, willie, is that this moment really isnt just about her. Its also about the women who came before her and the women who helped lift her. Especially that Key Coalition of black women, women who share her identity, who were among the last to have full access to the ballot, who were often overlooked, but who also organized. They organized, and they helped flip key states like georgia, states that were crucial to allowing senator harris to really seize this moment and head to the white house. So a lot of people say this isnt just about the singular image of change. Its also about a more collective moment of progress. Willie . So true. And so important if you go back even further into south carolina. You can make the case the black women saved joe bidens campaign all the way back during that primary. Morgan, great report. I cant wait until i see you back in the studio. Hopefully thats sometime soon. Thanks so much. Reporter you got it friend. Comedian Dave Chappelle hosted the show with musical guest foo fighters. Its been almost 20 years since a Young Musician named Chris Stapleton left has small hometown of staffordsville, kentucky, and moved to nashville to chase the music city dream. For years he found it as a successful songwriter for some of the biggest names in town. But five years ago, the dream got bigger when stapleton released his debut traveler that won grammys and stoestablid him as one of the most distinctive voices in all of music. His 2017 followup album won three more grammys. Chris and i got together over zoom for a virtual sunday sitdown to talk about his latest record, and we were happy to be joined by his wife and bandmate, morgan. Good to see you, man. Thank you for taking the time. How much, chris, do you miss being occupy that stage right now . I miss it dearly, i miss being on stage with the guys, you know, just playing. Chris stapleton was on stage in texas playing the very first show of a longplanned tour when the world ground to a halt. You know, there were rumb rumblings of i dont know, maybe we should shut things down before we played the show. Before i got off stage, the nba had pulled the plug on things, kind of fullon shutdown which, you know, was a jarring thing to hear. We shut it down that night. You play one show, and at that point i think most of us thought, all right, were down for a couple of weeks, we didnt know. We tried rescheduling initially, and then when that didnt work, we said, well, lets just move it to next year and hope for the best. Time off the road has meant more family time at home. A 300acre farm outside of nashville we visited three years ago. Its where chris and his wife morgan are raising their five children, aged 11 to 18 months. So what has stay at home been like for you and morgan . Yeah, a lot of time with the kids. A lot of diapers and a lot of, you know, just fun. The amount of time that weve gotten to spend with our children this year is as it is for everybody else, you know, a big change. I always ask people if they picked up any like new hobbies, and im on the bicycle a lot more i hadnt ridden sense i was a kid. I got a bicycle and started taking off around the farm. Before the coronavirus changed everything, stapleton already had put the finishing touches on starting over, his fourth studio album set to be released on november 13th. This record i think is a lot of what was in my heart. Ive had different opinions rendered on whether or not this sounds like some of the older music or if its a little bit of a departure. Maybe its some of both. I dont know. Starting over so what, chris, does starting over mean to you . Just all these seasons in life, you know, and these periods where you actually have to do that. You know, you have to start over and find something something new or find a new way of doing things. And thats kind of what that song is. But theres hope in it, you know, theres hope in having to find a new way. And we wanted the song to feel that way. Starting over delivers the sound stapletons fans love. But one song called watch you burn puts the singer songwriter into new territory. It is stapletons fiery reaction to the mass shooting at a Country Music festival in las vegas three years ago and a message to the shooter who killed 59 people. Why did you want to write and record a song about that terrible night in las vegas . Well, i mean, lyrically that came at us kind of a a reactionary thing. Sometimes i write things purely for therapeutic reasons, you know. But certainly there was power, and we got the all voices choir on the end of it, and it took it to a whole new place. And it does things to me, you know, like when i hear that, i you know, it it moves me in a way. Its not a ballad, its not sentimental. Youre pissed off in that song. Yeah, a little bit. Its, you know you know, my wifes back there shaking her head, yeah, youre pissed off a lot in that song. I have anger issues. Im finding out in actual therapy that maybe thats true, you know. It makes me want morgan offers chris much more than moral support. She is his longtime partner on stage providing harmony with a powerful voice of her own. From the moment she wakes me up morgan, great to see you. Good to see you, willie. We figured you were talking to us anyway from off camera, lets just get you in here. So how do you feel, morgan, on the eve of a big album release . Kind of nerverackingment im not worried, im not nervous, i think it will be always well received and loved. I think people will feel about it the way i do. Especially songs like watch you burn and really kind of going for it which i know for you is a little nerveracking, a little like feels like youre putting yourself out there a little bit. Five grammys, five kids, and 5. 5 years since traveler, the multiplatinum debut album that changed their lives. Morgan and Chris Stapleton finally have slowed down long enough this year to take stock. Like that. Like a blink of an eye. And so much has changed for us. I mean, we were plugging along for a while in a very different rhythm prior to traveler. I feel like weve had a lot of change personally and professionally just since making that record. We had come up to new york to drive do some press the very first solo record that i put out. That felt like a big deal to me. Im in new york, im going to promote this album, and were playing a show in new york city. I dont know, that fairytale stuff. Kind of like, hey, i sold out at Madison Square garden. When you say that, that feels like making it. Weve got tonight do so many things, meet so many wonderful people. An jincredible journey so far. Our latest addition is now like into everything. Then our big kids are theyre 11 and 9 and whole new spaces for us as parents in that way, too. Our daughters 9 years old and wearing a sizenine shoe. Turning into a woman. Crazy to watch and navigate. You are my sunshine morgan, are you my sunshine, your cover is amazing. Do you sing it to the kids . I do. Its a speedier version they want to listen to it. They know how to talk to an alexa, even the 2yearolds very specifically requests it. Our youngest says, mama, daddy, and alexa. Says that anything to anything the shape of a cylinder. They do request mama music and daddy music. What do they ask for . You are my sunshine is high on the list. The second one thats high on the list dont put my love like real kind of beautiful music which is what i like to give to mama. When they want to rock, they listen to me. Second one to know high on my list, too. Thats a good one. Chris album starting over with the minimalist cover is available on november the 13th. It is really good. Dont forget to subscribe to the sunday sitdown podcast to hear the fulllength interview with chris and morgan stapleton. You can find it on apple podcasts or wherever you get yours. The second largest number belong the to President Donald Trump in this election. Those massive partisan numbers remind us the United States is a divided country. Pults Pulitzer Prize author john impeachable has been thi meac sunday spotlight. People sure showed up to vote. And lest we thought an election would provide clarity, provide an answer to the arguments america has been having with itself for many, it sure doesnt feel that way. I think i understand why people feel that way. My point of view is historically based which is both a vice and a virtue sometimes. Just because something has happened before doesnt mean its not happening again now. Were a very closely divided country in a perennial sense. We were divided patriot versus tory, north versus south, agrarian versus industrial, segregated versus integrated, archie bunker versus the age. Asqua aqua ri us. We have been defined by or decisions and moments of unity. As. Lets say that the president ial election turns out that the winner wins 50. 5, maybe close to 51 of the popular vote. Thats a higher number, the percentage, that harry truman, john kennedy, richard nixon, jimmy carter, Ronald Reagan the first time, bill clinton, george w. Bush, or donald trump won the popular vote. Close elections produce consequential presidencies. And close election as are far me often the rule than the exception. If to mend the tear in the fabric, suggests meacham, it will be from the bottom up. I think in many ways the shift we need to get to a moment where it doesnt feel so divided is we need a shift in our dispositions of heart and mind. Reporter defined he says at a minimum the things we can agree on. Is your soul hopeful today . My soul is hopeful because i dont think we have any alternative. I think that human nature suggests that we have to press on, as huck finn said, we have to light out for the territories, and we have to hope that tomorrow can be better than today. And what i try to think about is my sense of American History is that at every moment where we thought doom was at hand, we came through. Thats not a guarantee, but it does suggest that enough of us if we get our hearts and minds in the right place, if we respect reason, if we see each other as neighbors and not as adversaries, that there is a path to a more perfect union. Reporter the people said amen. For sunday today, harry smith, new york. Harry, john, a couple of greats right there. Thank you very much. This week we highlight another life well lived. On july 30th, 1965, president lyndon b. Johnson signed into law a massive new federal Health Care Program for seniors called medicare. An official name phillip lee was charged with making sure it worked. Lee was born in San Francisco, the son of a doctor who ran a Medical Clinic that served the poor and the elderly. Phillip made housecalls with his father and eventually became a doctor himself. He served as a young Navy Physician during the korean war. In 1965, dr. Lee joined the federal Governments Department of health, education, and welfare, where he focused on implementing the newly passed medicare program. Part of that job was to ensure that americas hospitals complied with the provision that required them to desegregate in order to receive medicare funding. The hospitals chose money over discrimination in facilities, care, and hiring. When dr. Lee started out, less than half of all hospitals were desegregated. By early 1967, some 95 were in compliance. Dr. Lee next became chancellor of the university of california San Francisco and later led an aggressive fight against the aids epidemic as Health Commissioner in San Francisco before joining the department of health and Human Services in the clinton administration. Dr. Philip lee who ensured health care for millions of american seniors and achieved hospital desegregation in the process died last week in new york city. He was 96 years old. In our first high, it goes to our smart, talented, and dedicated nbc news colleague steve kornacki. The sleepless maestro of the big election board and the man who inspired a new term cha charch trob. He stood constant guard at his touchscreen post explaining the numbers and taking only brief breaks for care and feeding. And a change of khakis. Msnbc kept a camera on steve even in commercial breaks, so viewers would be assured he had not left their side. Social media loving it using the hash tag track trackscore unanymous nasdaqy. Chrissy teigen tweeted and made a collage of steve, the background of her iphone. Former saturday night live star leslie jones also professing her love for steve in live election dmaecommentary. Steve core unanymousliy k this guy. I want reporters to shuffle and concern. I love this dude. We all love this dude. During our coverage early friday morning, i suggested we get steve a chair, he told us, quote, if i sit down, ill fall asleep. There was no chair. Steve carried us through this week. He truly is one of the best guys you will ever meet. Khaki sales understandably are through the roof. Our first low goes to another viral star of election coverage, the teenage son of Pennsylvania Attorney general josh shapiro who made an unintentional walkon cameo during one of dads interviews this week. Keep an eye on the doorway. Run to the Supreme Court as theyve indicated, clearly thats failed. They refused to intervene, ultimately now those ballots are going to be counted. Shapiro was live on msnbc talking about pennsylvanias election process when jonah wandered in, head buried in his phone, before looking up in shock and realizing, yes, hes on National Television. He then slowly backed out of the frame as if we hadnt noticed him. When buzzfeed politics editor matt berman tweeted the clip with the caption this bored child gets it, attorney general shapiro responded, im taking away his phone for 24 hours. In fairness, you never assume your dad is on national tv out in the living room. Im with you, jonah. Our next high to an ohio dad named Robert Carter who now is the proud father of five after adopting a group of siblings last week on National Adoption day. Im glad for those of you thank you. [ applause ] back when he was 12, the now29yearold carter was placed in foster care and separated from his own eight siblings. In 2018, he began fastering robert, giovanni, and chianti, and was determined to reunite them with their two sisters so the five children would not have to live through the kind of trauma he experienced. Last year robert found the girls. Mariana and makayla, and reunited the five siblings. Last week he officially adopted all five kids after a sixmonth process. Robert told us here at today, i get to be there for them for rest of their life, they never have to worry about being neglected or alone ever again. We are a family forever. Way to go, robert. That is a beautiful happy family. Our final low goes to a terrifying moment for a pair of kayakers in california who went out for peaceful whale watching and were nearly swallowed by one of the majestic creatures. Rest assured as you watch this, everyone is okay this morning. Whoa oh, my. Somewhere in the yellow kayak are Julie Mcsorley and liz cattrell who were surprised to say the least by a humpback breaching beneath them. Jewel whoa recorded the moment on her phone as it happened first saw a school of fish a little too close for comfort. Thats when a whale suddenly lifted them straight out of the water and out of their kayak. In video captured by nearby paddlers, it appears the kayakers are swallowed. Jonah and the whale style. Luckily they only capsized and walked away from the incident completely unharmed. Popped up, my head up, took a breath and looked for her. She popped up after me. We got back to the car, and i was shaking my shirt, and a bunch of fish came out of my shirt. Im glad we can laugh about it now. Things looked very dicey there for a minute.
