In his home state of florida. His Biggest Campaign day this year. Willie . Fighting for every last vote. Kelly odonnell in pittsburgh. Thanks. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. I know we are close when i see you at the big board. Talk about how you will watch on tuesday night. This gets confusing for a lot of people. Where will you be looking to see where this race is headed . Well, look, on tuesday night, im looking right here are this race is headed, many these three states in baltimore, which is florida, georgia and North Carolina. We will get votes from those three states. We will get we should get 95 of the actual total vote count. They seem to handle this well. Between georgia 7 00 poll close, florida, 8 7 00 and 8 00. If we call any of these three state blue before midnight, we will have an idea who won the presidency. North carolina could tell us who controls the senate, too. Let me show you the precarious path here for the president. Right now, if you look at wisconsin and michigan, that gets you put that blue and you look at the remaining undecided states. We will give him iowa and texas. As you can see here, he cant lose anything. He cant lose arizona. If you put arizona, biden wins. He cant lose florida. He cant lose georgia. He cant lose North Carolina because biden would win. He cant lose pennsylvania, because biden would win. As you can see here, willie, how quickly this map has shrunk for the president. In particular, this lack of strength here in wisconsin and michigan. Thats all on the east coast. You have some idea early on in the evening, perhaps. This gets confusing because of the way the mailin vote is counted in different states. How should people waf ttch the states . Take pennsylvania in particular. They not going to count anybody who voted by mail, those ballots will not be counted on tuesday night. Let me repeat, essentially, everybody who voted by mail in pennsylvania, those will not be counted until after the election day votes are counted. We know what polls have shown. A majority of election day voters are trump voters. A majority of mailin voters are biden voters. What you will see is a perhaps in pennsylvania this fairly significant lead for the president. Maybe 10, 12, 13 points. The mailin vote gets counted on wednesday, then you see it shrink, a little on thursday, it will shrink, more on friday. Pennsylvania officials claim they will get it done by friday and get us a number. I tell you, it would be a problem. However, theres a sken cenario. You have biden carries florida, georgia, North Carolina, even if we dont get those three states, theres a way for him to get this presidency even if those three states dont give us a vote count for days. We heard in kellys piece, the president raising questions about what may happen in the days while the votes are being counted. Its interesting, chuck. Thanks so much. We will look for more on meet the press which chuck looks to the final days with top pole ste sters fans out. Election day is in the middle of a Public Health crisis. More than 86,000 new cases saturday. Those come in a week that has seen recordbrebreaking numbers the United States. In europe, leaders are taking extreme measures to slow the spread. Boris johnson announced the uk will enter a nationwide lockdown next week for nearly a month. France and germany among the other nations taking similar steps. Lets bring in an Infectious Disease doctor at boston medical center. Its good to see you, as always. I laid out the numbers right now. You are so good at giving us a cleareyed Public Health physician perspective on where we are exactly, devoid of politics. What is your assessment of the state of coronavirus in america . Good morning, willie. Im frightened enough to give you a personal anecdote. I sat down with my parents last week to have a conversation about what i see potentially as the beginning of this surge. We see this frightening number. But whats more frightening is in most states its the beginning of the third surge. We are starting off at this very high point where in october, 47 states saw increases in their hospitalizations. Over the next month, with things like thanksgiving, potentially students traveling back home, families gathering, we will see an increased surge combined with the cold weather, which of course pushes the cases. I do want to make one point. The cases will increase. The amount of cases increasing will depend on us. I dont want to leave people without that hope. Americans are making two choices this week. They are choosing the person at the poll and the personal activity. Both will have an immense impact on the trajectory of the pandemic. If we put on the mask and do the physical distancing and dont invite extended family this year to thanksgiving, we could make a huge impact in cutting down the number of cases. We just saw in europe getting very serious. A National Lockdown put in place in the uk, germany and france doing their own versions as well. From your expert position, what do you think needs to happen as of today to avoid a potential disaster through the winter in . Iaspects that hurt us. There are different policies. The disinformation, as you said, the fact that we have lost a percentage of our population to not follow the simple measures such as wearing a mask because its politicized. The third is division. We havent been able to pass things like the new covid relief act, which would allow states to push businesses a little further about rolling back activities when they need to be rolled back because theres no support to do that. Of those, the most important i think we hope soon is disinformation, including the disinformation we get from this administration about the fact that cases are going away, which of course we all see they are not and the deaths go away which are not. If we can get everybody united for one action, bring those cases and numbers down, i think we can get to the other side. As you say, there may be good news coming on a vaccine, but a lot needs to happen before we get there. Thank you, as always, for your expertise on this. We appreciate it and were starting out in the 40s, another chilly day across the bay area at least for the first half of our morning. 47 degrees in walnut creek. Neutrogena® this week, the Supreme Court issued a pair of rulings, one for North Carolina, the other for allowed the states to count mailin ballots for days after the election. They are expected to play a big role in determining whether President Trump gets a second term or joe biden moves into the white house in january. How will officials count and certify the Record Number of mailin votes . How should you think about the numbers as they come in over the course of Election Night . Dasha byrnes has our sunday focus. Reporter Election Night could be more like election week. All thanks to these. This increase in absentee voting, thats a big difference. Reporter absentee voting is not new. Some battleground states like michigan and pennsylvania have recently expanded the rules, allowing more voters to use that option for the first time. That means, new hurdles for election workers. What are the Biggest Challenges you and your staff are facing right now . Just the volume of absentee requests. Its really putting a strain on resources. Reporter the process is old school and most steps are done by hand. Im putting the ballot with the envelope. Im adding instructions. Im sealing the envelope, putting it in the postal bin. My next door neighbor helping. Reporter handling returned ballots is no less labor intensive. She will look at the voter and look at the signature. Reporter one more verification and they are locked away until election day. Thats problart of the problem. Florida, arizona and North Carolina are already counting their absentee ballots and will likely have results on Election Night. Before the mustwin states of michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania, the rules dont allow those ballots to be counted until november 3rd. It took us three days to open and process 16,000 or so ballots for the primary. I will time myself here and show you the process. Timer is on. You put the envelope into the envelope opener. Put that through. Theres another envelope in here. The secrecy envelope. Open that as well. Put that through. Then you have the ballot in here which is all folded up and to scan it you need to get the creases out like putting a dollar bill through a vending machine. A little of this. The election director told me you can roll it, which helps. Once its mostly straightened out, then we will actually go and put it into the scanner to be scanned. Lets see how long that took. About 45 seconds for one ballot. Reporter with 8 million requests, michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin will likely leave the country waiting. Most paths to victory require winning at least one of those states, especially for President Trump. Even the high stakes cant change the speed. Its going to take some time, because everything is very methodical. Theyre just going to have to be patient. Dasha joins me from grand rapids, michigan. You are very handy with a voting machine. What a painstaking process. To add to this, some states are allowing extensions on absentee ballots. As i said a minute ago, pennsylvania, North Carolina can count votes received after election day. What does that mean for the final count . Good morning. That depends on how close the race is. Remember, those ballots have to be postmarked by november 3rd. The bulk will come in pretty close to that date. Those real straggler ballots that come in later, those will only make a difference in a close race. Its important to keep in mind that because in some of the key states the inperson vote will be tabulated more quickly than the absentee vote, there could be a situation where the election looks a certain way on Election Night and then the race takes a turn once that absentee vote comes in. Theres nothing or fraudulent. Its the way the process works. A great look behind the scenes of that process. Dasha, on the campaign trail. Thanks so much. Great to see you. Poll numbers like that, can only go wrong once in a blue moon. Thats jim carrey back as former Vice President biden on a new episode of saturday night live. Mcconaughey, the very name evokes the free spirited easy living all right, all right, all right philosophy of the actor we first met in 1993playi iplaying local legend in dazed and confused. Three years la s later he was ae start in a time to kill. He became a bankable romantic comedy star through the 2000s before taking nearly two years away from the business. He returned to earn an oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club and acclaim for the hbo series true detective. Last year, the 50yearold mcconaughey took another break, gathering the diaries he kept since he was 14 years old and heading alone to a remote cabin to look through the pages of his life. He turned them into a new book gree greenlights, a clollection of true stories. We got together over zoom for a virtual sunday sitdown. Was that daunting to go back through 35, 36 years of diaries . Were you worried about what you might find . Embarrassment, shame, both of which i had when i looked at them. But i found this. Some of the things i thought i would only be embarrassed about i laughed my butt off at. Some of the things that i thought i would be ashamed about i found that i had forgiven myself. What was the moment where you said, this is interesting and maybe cathartic for me, but i think its worth telling the world about . I found the more personal i got, the more relatable the stories i saw and felt assured that other people would see, oh, i see myself in that. Matthew mcconaughey grew up in texas with two older brothers in what he calls a loving home. But his memories of a happy childhood are mixed with stories of his parents Violence Toward him and each other. You say the love was real. It was bloody sometimes but never in question. When you are looking at Something Like that as a kid, do you know thats wrong . I was scared at the moment. But even then and immediately after that, i didnt ever question the love that mom and dad had or the love that they gave us. I tell these stories that are bloody and ugly, sometimes violent. Those were times where the love that we had that was never if question was most challenged but never had a chance of being beat. Probably most people read this and say, thats abuse, thats what im looking at, the way your father treated you sometimes is abuse. Did you not see it that way . Im in the in denial. My mom and dad are not in denial of it. I dont know its really fair for someone to tell someone else you have been victimized and you were abused. No, no, i wasnt. That isnt how i took it. I dont raise my children the same way my parents raised me. Every single time i got in trouble or got the belt or whatever, i earned it. My wife and i do more explaining. Lets debate this out. Today, my mom goes, you all talk about it too much. You painted a picture of this household you come out of. Where does the actor Matthew Mcconaughey come from . It wasnt really until after i got my first jobda dazed and confused. All right, all right, all right. You came up with that on your own . The there was not a word written for that scene. Who is wooderson . I said wooderson is about his car. Getting high. Slater is riding shotgun. About rock and roll. Then i heard, action. I looked up. All right, all right, all right. Sg you never could have known what had a would come. How often do you hear that . All the time. I get pictures. People have it tattooed. Very sensational bodies on their body. Its like a monument, the beginning of your career. Its fair to say that there are other films in between. But time to kill was the moment you became, forgive the term, a movie star. Can you see her . Imagine shes white. Over the weekend that a time to kill came out, my life changed over those two days. It was shocking. Everyone had a biography of me. I noticed that for me personally, my soul missed its anonymity. I put on a backpack and got out of dodge and went to places where people did not know my name and understand get my head and heart communicating clearly again to say, what is it i want, what do i want to do, what is it i dont want. Hollywood wanted him. In 2001, mcconaughey began a run of romantic comedies with bigname costars that cemented him as a Major Box Office draw. Are you okay . Are you okay . The wedding planner. Okay. Im going to the chateau. Get my own key to the kitchen to cook steaks at 3 00 in the morning. Did you like that run up until a point . In you book you say, i knew it had to end. I did. I gave myself license to enjoy it. Lean into your life that youve got, mcconaughey. Access and influence and fame. You will know when its time to get out. Around 2008 or so, you put on the brakes on things for almost two years. Im going to recalibrate. I knew where i wanted to go and what roles i wanted to do. They were not coming my way. I met my now wife at that time and was falling in love with her. We created our first child. Those were two really great anchors to have for me in my life when i chose to take a sabbatical from working. I entertained. Maybe hollywood never calls back. Maybe i will be a High School Football coach. After 20 months of nothing, no rohcom, no seeing me shirtless on the beach, where is mcconaughey . He is forgotten. Guess what . Now he just became a new good idea for a role like a lincoln lawyer, killer joe, paper boy, magic mike, mud, true detective. I unbranded in those two years. A combination of azt im suing you for attempted murder. You won the oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. That had to be gratifying to have it turn out that well. It was affirmation that what i was intending to do was translating. Those other things were me, too. I always said that. Romcom, i love them. People go, you know, this is now and that was then. That wasnt really you as a shirtless guy. Now you are showing us the true self. Thats bs. That was me, too, and still is. Those romcoms i was doing were paying the bills. No shame in the shirtless pictures. His book greenlights is available now. It refers to the moments in his life that looked like red lights or barriers but became green lights for him eventually. Subscribe to the sunday sitdown podcast to hear the full interview with Matthew Mcconaughey. Theres more in there for you. Find it on apple podcasts or wherever you get yours. What brought us to a place where facts and shared truth are in dispute. Harry smith has our sunday spotlight. Reporter to get started, lets agree on one thing. The earth is round. Perhaps you heard this during this seasons baseball playoffs. I had to battle half my team thinking the earth is flat. Reporter we would like to say you cant make this stuff up, but you can. I began to sense there was some kind of glitz in the information ecosystem, because people kept saying things to me that werent true. Reporter charlotte alter is a Senior Correspondent for time time. She interviewed nearly 200 people this summer in swing states. What is it like to realize that we live in a country with different views of reality . I was deeply alarmed, because i think american democracy relies on an inform and engaged electiorate thats making ration rationale decisions. Reporter for what she encountered on her trip was not tales of ships falling off the edge of the earth but for instance the pandemic is not real. I would say, what about more than 200,000 people that have died . They would say, i think its overblown by the media. Reporter antimasking, germ warfare, a crazy amount of disinformation served by social media with a side order of qanon. It wasnt that people necessarily believed things that were false. They believed a whole world of things that were false. None of us platforms are built for truth. Reporter this woman, the Research Director at Harvard Kennedy center on media politics and Public Policy says, theres a reason for this. The truth is boring. The truth is not very scandalous. So the Actual Technology itself is trained on sending you things that are outrageous. Reporter algorithms designed to keep you engaged with one purpose, to sell more advertising. Though the tech titans behind the machines have cracked down on purposely false posts, passage on the energy highway can be perilous, disinformation flourished. When it comes to political disinformation, we see these tactics to defame different celebrities and surrogates and politicians. As a result, its really hard to get true information. Its really hard to get to the facts. Reporter can a democracy exist in a world where truth cant be agreed on . We need to get back to basics when it comes to making sure that our Information Systems serve the broadest public interest, which includes making sure that theres room for timely, local and relevant information, which you dont get from the internet anymore. Reporter could we agree on that . We wonder if its too late. For sunday today, harry smith, new york. Harry, thank you very much. This week, we highlight another life well lived. On august 3rd of last year, a man walked into a walmart in el paso, texas, and started shooting. 23 people were killed. Into the collective grief stepped Harrison Johnson. He was the Senior Pastor at praise Temple Full Gospel Baptist Church where he spent 26 years. He grew up in el paso, a basketball star. One of 12 children with parents in the ministry. In the days and weeks after the walmart shooting, Bishop Johnson offered comfort to the people of the city. Most famously, to a man named Antonio Basco whose wife was killed on that terrible day. With no family to speak of, antonio asked a funeral home to put out the word to the public about a memorial service. Bishop johnson served as the director of the funeral home. He began a mission to give margie a proper goodbye. We love you. It was so great that the service had to be moved tie larto a larger venue. 3,000 people gathered to grieve for margie and for their city, with nearly 1,000 floral arrangements arriving from around the world. Look at all the friends you have. Our first high goes to a little dancing for democracy. Millions of early voters waited in line this week to cast their ballots, including me, for five hours in new york city. True story and well worth it. In philly, one group turned their wait into a celebration featuring the mississippi chacha slide. Thats how you vote, right there. That dance party was planned by a coalition called the election defenders as part of their initiative to bring joy to the polls. Mission accomplished. It went viral online with more than 7 million viewers. In new york city, they were treated to a show. This time by brooklyn universitieuniversity university. A couple of days later, voters in the same spot were treated to cookies from the man behind that mask, Actor Paul Rudd who came out in the rain to thank them for doing their part. Nice work, paul. There was a lot of that generous spirit in the long lines. Pro you probably saw it, too. Our next high is around the creative around yesterdays strange halloween. How do you trickortreat at a safe social distance . You start with a dad who devised the candy chute to deliver goodies. You may have seen this in your own neighborhood as the trend took off. Parents across the Country Building and decorating their own versions. Very nice engineering there.
