While older scientific models show a gradual sea level increase in recent decades, the latest satellite data shows seas rising exponentially around the bay area. That puts this entire Mobile Home Park several inches under water by 2030 if something isnt done and soon. What are you going to do if the water comes or when the water comes . Reporter around 400 miles of bay area shoreline we found more than a dozen projects that were meant to slow, stop or protect against the rising tides now put on hold or delayed all because of the covid crisis and its economic impact. Projects that have been delayed or halted include exporing ways to prevent frequent floods. By elevating the roadway and buildings and creating artificial reeves and sea walls. In one case replacing an outdated levee with a new environmenty friendly one. And the restoration project, the large largest wetlands effort meant to absorb rising sea levels. While some planning continues, most construction has stalled. We cant afford to lose a week a day, certainly not a year or two. Reporter the executive director of the San Francisco estuary institute. This is probably going to rob us 1 to 2 years out of that critical ten year window because local governments are simply going to be cash strapped. Does that worry you . It terrifies me. We have an enormous challenge ahead of us. A challenge that has no longterm funding thank tuesday the high coast of the covid crisis. And youll see over the past several years we definitely have had some increasing drought frequency and also strength. We do have that drought returning right now, moderate to severe which youll see over the past several years we have had more extreme droughts than when you compare it back to the 1890s and early 1900s. They were mainly mild to moderate. So of course this comes into play with our snow pack. A third of the states water comes from that snow pack, and youll see over the past few years for those increasing droughts weve had lower than normal no snow pack as opposed to the 80 years where we had well above average.
