Donald trump and joe biden have run very different races these last couple of weeks. The president holding his mega rallies, joe biden doing smaller, more covidsafe events. With just seven days to go they are focused on largely the same handful of swing states that could decide this, starting right here in florida. With 29 electoral votes at stake, there is no bigger battleground than florida, the state President Trump now calls home. I voted for a guy named trump. Reporter and where he cast his own ballot last weekend, more than 5. 6 floridians have already voted early. Joe biden returns to the Sunshine State on friday. His lead in the average of polls here, just 1. 8, nearly the same margin President Trump won the state by in 2016. Motor city, usa. Reporter biden holds a stronger polling lead in each of the pivotal midwestern states once called the democrats blue wall. Biden leads in wisconsin, and pennsylvania. Donald trump won the states by less than a point each in 2016. The blue wall has to be reestablished. Reporter no state has seen more candidate visits than pennsylvania. Biden has been to the keystone state 11 times since his convention. Trump campaigning about eight times in that same period, including three rallies on monday alone. Pennsylvania gets it. Reporter three of the closest races in the country are in traditionally republican southern and western states where democrats are on offense. Biden leads by an average of 2. 4 points in arizona and by just 1. 2 points in North Carolina. Vice president mike pence travels there today to defend the state his ticket won by nearly 4 points in 2016. Georgia, where biden campaigns today, is the only battleground state where President Trump leads and there by less than a point. No democratic president ial nominee has won georgia since 1992. And there are relatively few voters left to convince. Early votes cast so far in georgia and North Carolina account for twothirds of the votes cast there in all of the 2016 election. And if you just want to know what state is going to keep us up late on election night, keep an eye on pennsylvania. They cant start processing, let alone counting all the absentee ballots until election day itself and they can still refuse absentee ballots up to a few days after election day. Firefighters are still in this local community trying to protect homes after the wildfire exploded, fuelled by those massive winds over the last 24 hours. Later on today were expecting those winds to continue to stay at dangerously high speeds as firefighters do their very best to hold their ground. Overnight the dreaded santa ana winds kicked up again with renewed force. Flames fuelled by cold desert air, racing across dry hill sides, putting First Responders at deadly risks. Two young firefighters critically injured in the blaze. One has 65 burns, both second and third degree. The second has 50 , both second and third degree burns. Both are intubated at this time. Reporter in the mountains outside l. A. , wind speeds hit 96 Miles Per Hour, the same intensity as a category 2 hurricane. This is really, really bad here. And i dont know how much longer i can do this. You get these singledigit humidities and winds like were experiencing, fires are going to move quickly. Orange county fire authority. Reporter traffic clogging escape routes, with more than 90,000 people in irvine alone under evacuation orders, some with little to no warning. I just have what i have in my car, which is not much. Reporter heavy smoke caused the faa to evacuate the control tower at John Wayne Airport and delay flights. Reporter its not necessarily the power and scope of these wildfires thats the most dangerous element out here. Its clearly the wind thats driving that. In Northern California where so much has already burned, power was cut off to around 1 Million People in hopes of preventing more devastation. From the winds in the bay area to santa ana in the southland, california is ones again under siege. Officials are still trying to determine the cause of this fire but they do say a local Power Company may have had some downed power lines and that may have been the cause for the blaze. Minnesotas governor is warning that the state is reaching a critical point, hospitalizations here are up 70 over the last month. Across the country, the rise in cases caused a steep drop on wall street. This morning, from minnesota to massachusetts, california to texas, the pandemic is hitting new milestones. Were tired, you know, were sick of covid19. We really are. Theres no end in sight. Reporter the u. S. Has averaged more than 70,000 cases a day for the past week and negotiations for another stimulus package have stalled, renewing fears on wall street. The dow dropping 650 points on monday, its worst day since early september. Winter is now here and we dont foresee the cases slowing down any time soon, unless people change their behaviors. Reporter covid cases in at least 44 states are up 10 or more in the last two weeks. No matter how you look at it, its not good news. Reporter about 41,000 people are now hospitalized, a 40 jump in the last month. We have lost a few people and its been hard, because we have cared for them for so long. Reporter among the biggest stie spikes right now is in new mexico. We tend to be seeing a surge of cases that represent the younger age population. Reporter doctors say thats not any kind of relief because those younger patients could end up spreading the virus to older, more vulnerable people. In el paso, texas, where hospitals are full and a nightly curfew is now in effect, this man is battling the virus and is struggling to breathe. I do worry because there are no beds right now. Reporter here in minnesota, hospitals like this one are busier and Public Health officials are warning people to try and limit community spread. Since june, there have been about 70 wedding related outbreaks here in the state. Savannah. Thank you. It will continue to race up through the southeast into the northeast and mix with some colder air and possibly cause the first snowfall of new england and upstate new york. But back down along the coast, were looking at storm surges, the greatest amounts 4 to 6 feet all the way to mobile, alabama. Nasa says it found water molecules on a sunlit area of the lunar surface, right there scientists had already discovered ice at the polar caps, but water spread across the rest of the moon would make it much easier for astronauts to live and work there. If you dont have to carry your own water, that makes it a lot easier because then you can carry other things so using whats there at the moon is a really good strategy for us moving forward. Reporter researchers made the discovery using a 9foot infrared telescope flying in a 747 above most of the earths atmosphere a few years ago we were onboard for an exclusive firsthand look. The telescope is riding on a cushion of air with 24 of these black air bladders literally absorbing all of the vibration from the plane that allows the telescope to lock on a distant star as if it were locking on a quarter with pinpoint accuracy. Reporter in this case scientists used the telescope to zero in on the moon. While the discovery is important, they did not find a lot of water the equivalent of a 12ounce bottle within about 35 cubic feet of lunar soil they believe the molecules come from solar wind or micrometeorites that bombard the lunar surface. The lunar environment is very, very harsh and so for water to exist on the moon is a pretty spectacular finding. But for life to exist, it would be extremely difficult. Reporter nasa astronauts last stood on the moon in 1972 3, 2, 1, ignition were on our way, houston. Reporter now set to return in 2024, more than 50 years later, could there be more water under the soil is there enough for humans and how easily can it be extracted . The moon is great at teasing us its right there in the night sky. Its almost like we could just hop right over there, but its difficult. Reporter difficult and full of mystery yeah, to be clear, they have not found puddles or big underground lakes, at least not yet. What they have found is hydrogen and oxygen they believe that those chemicals, those ingredients, rather, could be critical to future man missions. By the way, man and woman. The First Mission is going to be a male astronaut and female astronaut in just four years. The Human Mission tom, you mentioned future missions what about mars, does this have any application to that . Reporter so to mars to get there, they want to build a lunar base so they can go from the moon and then on to mars so if they have these components, they can not only hopefully be able to use it, mine it for drinking water, but also turn it into rocket fuel. Now, one week until election day, both candidates are making their closing pitch. President trump will hold three rallies in states, michigan, wisconsin and nebraska. Joe biden makes a pair of stops in georgia, a historically red state. The democrats are looking to turn blue for the First Time Since 1992. And the president is escalating his attacks that undercut the integrity of the election. Were watching you, governor, very closely in philadelphia. Were watching you. A lot of bad things. A lot of bad things happen there with the counting of the votes. Reporter twitter flagged a misleading tweet by President Trump monday that claimed there are big problems with mailin ballots across the country. In fact there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud. Even the fbi director just last week reassured voters that the election is safe and secure. The president is also calling for the final tally to be completed on election day. Thats not how it works. In pennsylvania alone, mailin ballots will be counted up to three days after november 3rd. Reporter craig, good morning to you. Here in the state of georgia, nearly 3 Million People have already cast an early ballot and about 30 of those are black voters. So in a state where trump and biden are virtually tied, it really underscores the importance of the black vote and why those comments from Jared Kushner are getting so much attention. With both candidates courting the crucial black vote, this morning team trump is playing cleanup after these remarks from the president s Senior Advisor and soninlaw, Jared Kushner. One thing weve seen in a lot of the black community, which is mostly democrat, is that President Trumps policies are the policies that can help people break out of the problems theyre complaining about, but he cant want them to be successful more than they want to be successful. Reporter bidens Campaign Surrogates pouncing. First of all, black people are not complaining. They are articulating the systematic racism in this country. Reporter and this dismiss ive approach to the issues that black voters care about is indicative of trumps callousness and disregard for the lives of black people. The white house says kushners words were taken out of context. This year the number of eligible black voters has hit an alltime high with both sides scrambling for their support. If young black women and men vote, you can determine the outcome of this election. Not since Abraham Lincoln has anybody done what ive done for the black community. Reporter among black voters there is no shortage of engagement. A recent nbc news wall street journal poll shows more than threequarters of all black voters plan to vote early. A group especially energized after months of protests over racial injustice. Is that what drives you to come out and vote . For the most part, yes, yes. Just to see people who look like myself who are just being attacked just because of the color of their skin. Reporter that same poll shows 91 of black voters back biden, while 4 support President Trump. Nia moore, a College Student in minnesota, is one of them. This is your first president ial election. Why are you supporting President Trump . When i just kind of look at what President Trump has accomplished or the things that hes promised in comparison to joe biden, the answer is pretty clear to me. Reporter in georgia, tony carter is also voting early, for biden. But he says that was not a given. You were open to both sides. Yes. Im not going to vote blindly because that doesnt mean somebody is going to be right just because theyre democrat so i have to listen. Reporter now, here in georgia, officials have been urging people to come out and vote early. Theyre hoping that it means more manageable crowds on election day. But for so many black voters, it actually goes deeper than that. Ive spoken with several dozen voters during this early Voting Period and they say after all of the trouble and backlog we saw during georgias primary, theyre coming out early to make sure nothing goes wrong. Theyre concerned with things like long lines or trouble with technology, and they say that theyre early voting to make sure they have a chance to troubleshoot and make sure that their vote actually counts. So maybe we had a few instudio guests, from snl because everyone has been tested in the building but its tough, you know, and we want to make sure we baby step and do it the right way. But its awkward with no audience my friend said its almost like swinging three bats. By the time you get the audience back, youll be hitting home runs i really loved what you did, and i know nancy, your wife, helped you a lot and the girls were stars of your show too being at home. That was such a gift, to do that at a time when all of us were home and everyone is a little anxious, just to have that, you said it, normalcy. Do you feel like it changed how you do the show . I felt like there was something so revealing about some of the interviews you would do. Like celebrities were more open. It wasnt about coming on and plugging something, it was like conversation. Yeah, it did, it changed it down to like an actual conversation and i probably would never be invited into Meryl Streeps home, but there i am having a conversation or whatever its more like you dont have to play for an audience, just tell the story. You can take your time, the interviews are longer and you really get kind of off the page and Start Talking, like you said, having a conversation. I really i felt like ive grown as an interviewer and even as the show its just evolved into a whole new thing you go, oh, yeah, its yourself. Just be yourself and i think that amped it up when everyone is at home, it just you see everyones true colors. Youve got so many cool things going on.
