And later, a new sunday sitdown with Drew Barrymore on living her life in the public eye since she was a little girl, and now hosting her own talk show. A new gig she is very excited about. I think i am ridiculously goofy and overenthusiastic, and i overtalk and i dance around and im a total spaz. And even station managers were like, wow, shes really enthusiastic when i got notes and stuff. Im like, oh, god, i know. A saent sitdown with Drew Barrymore, plus, another life well lived later in the show. Lets begin with the overnight news at least two of Vice President pence close aides including his chief of staff have tested positive for covid19. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is at the white house with an update as the surging Coronavirus Crisis remains at the center of the president ial Campaign Just nine days out from the election. Kelly, good morning. Good morning, willie. This new hot spot of positive covid cases centers right around Vice President mike pence. The white house did not go public with this information about a top staffers condition until after media reports, and has not yet provided a full accounting of positive cases. The vps office says that despite his potential exposure here, he will continue to campaign today, traveling to north carolina. And they describe pence, whose name is on the ballot, as a, quote, essential worker. Wearing a mask as he returned from campaigning very late saturday, Vice President mike pences office announced chief of staff marc short has tested positive for covid19. I did hear about him just now. I think hes quarantined, yeah. Nbc news also learned his outside political adviser tested positive days earlier as well, and this morning, an anonymous source tells the New York Times three additional pence Staff Members had tested positive, too. Nbc news had not verified that independently. He and the second lady have traveled, and he plans to keep his schedule. The new cases come as President Trump railed again testing in wisconsin. You turn on and say cases have jumped. Cases, because we do now, we did half the testing, we would have had half the cases. In north carolina, he claimed democrats are hyping the virus to hurt him. Covid, covid, covid, covid. By the way, on november 4th, you wont hear about it anymore. While joe biden made two stops in pennsylvania saturday. Stakes are high. Warning that virus danger will not end soon. Theres going to be a dark winter ahead unless we change our way. Biden supporters stayed in their cars as a covid precaution. His voice and anger rising against the president s claims biden would hurt energyrelated jobs. Im not banning fracking in pennsylvania or anywhere else. And i can protect pennsylvania jobs, period. No matter how many times donald trump lies. Barack obama as surrogate in chief, defended biden at a drivein rally in miami. Joe biden is not a socialist. What is true is hell stand up for ordinary people. On the trail today, senator Kamala Harris is in michigan. Joe and jill biden will do a virtual event, and joe biden will travel to georgia tuesday. Kelly odonnell starting us off at a rainy white house this morning. Kelly, thanks so much. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Good to see you. The debates are behind us. We rounded the turn. Theres some 60 million ballots already cast in this election. Nine days to go now. What will you be looking for over the next week and change . Look, its following them on their travel schedule a little bit. You know, one of the things you can hear campaigns tell you where theyre focused or you can watch where they go, and the travel schedule tells you more about either where campaigns are feeling confident or where theyre nervous. I think this will be the week that the travel schedule will reveal where theyre nervous. Look, you have a donald trump who is looking for a new path to 270. If michigan and wisconsin dont come through, hes searching for new states. Suddenly, theyre trying to get minnesota. Ill be curious to see, do we see him go back there this week . Joe biden has decided to go to georgia this week. Thats a bit surprising to me, to be honest. I thought they would steick to the four or five core states they need. That says something to me. Yeah, and Kamala Harris was in georgia as well. Theyre putting a lot of attention into the state of georgia. You mentioned wisconsin and michigan, chuck. Just a couple cases that have surging cases of coronavirus. President trump yesterday again saying were rounding the corner, were doing great. Had numbers obviously tell us otherwise. How much does covid19 play in these last 19 days nine days, excuse me. Look, this is the president has been trying to manufacture an october surprise. I think were staring the october surprise in the face. It is this new surge of covid cases, all coinciding with the last nine days of this campaign. You know, willie, this general election campaign, think about it. In fact, we were talking about it with our own staff. The last time i was up in new york city was supertuesday. You know what that was, basically the beginning of this pandemic. Also the beginning of this general election. Joe biden gets the nomination. This campaign started with covid and it looks like its ending with covid. Boy, super tuesday feels like a lifetime ago. Well look for much more on meet the press when chuck t talks to top Campaign Advisers for President Trump and former Vice President joe biden. On saturday, nearly 80,000 new cases of covid19 were reported in the United States. Nearly matching fridays alltime single day high. And now, Public Health experts are warning again that things will continue to get worse as we head deeper into fall and winter, with some states that made significant progress over the summer now headed in the wrong direction. Nbcs sam brock is in miami with more. Sam, good morning. Reporter willie, good morning. Florida right now is reporting infection numbers not seen since the summer. New york, new jersey, massachusetts are registering totals they have not hit since may. Even so, the midwest right now appears to be the most strained part of the country. As lines for covid testing stretch blocks in some states, the results are rocking regions big and small. We are no doubt whatsoever in the second surge. This is what it looks like. Reporter chicago now under a business curfew as illinois just cracked decision,000 daily cases for the first time saturday. And farther west in the heartland. Wear a dang mask when youre indoors. Were not asking you to sign up for the draft here. Reporter the dakotas ranking first and second for covid cases per capita in the country. South dakotas governor christy nome faces record hospitalizations in her state. He writes in an oped this week, if folks want to wear a mask, they should be free to do so. Similarly, those who dont want to wear a masktient be shamed into wearing one, and government should not mandate it. Dr. Anthony fauci said its time to demand more. If people are not wearing masks, maybe we should be mandating it. The u. S. With alltime highs. Saturday, 79,000 cases, with several states not reporting over the weekend. As states once showing progress are now flashing warning signs. Massachusetts exceeded 1,000 daily cases for the First Time Since may with new york and new jersey hovering near 2,000. Even so, some are skeptical. So much hype going around right now. For those who are dealt with loss its been devastating. Like Catherine Hernandez of arizona, watching her husband die from covid, the trends are all too real. Im not sure what i can do, but i sure wish something could have been done different. Reporter more than 224,000 americans have died from covid19 so far. That is a number, willie, that is projected by the university of washington to reach 510,000 by the end of february unless we adopt consistent mask wearing when were around other people. It could save 100,000 lives or more. Willie, back to you. Too many stories like catherines. Sam brock in miami, thanks so much. Judge Amy Coney Barrett is expected to be confirmed tomorrow as the newest justice on the United States Supreme Court on a party line vote. Alaskas republican senator, lisa murkowski, who initially had opposed the confirmation process, announced now she will vote in favor of barretts confirmation. And last nights game four of the world series had one of the wildest finishes you will ever see. Bottom of the ninth inning, the Tampa Bay Rays are down by a run. Man on first and second. Two outs. The rays batter at the plate is down to his last strike. Then this happened. Brett philips hits a single to right center field. Kevin kiermaier scores from second to tie the game as the dodgers outfielder chris taylor beats the ball. Motoring home all the way from first. Should have been out by a mile after he tripped rounding third, but dodgers catcher will smith drops the relay throw allowing him to stumble home heads first with a gamewinning record, tapping home plate. Final score, rays, 8. Dodgers, 7, in a wild finish. The series now improbably we are under a microclimate weather alert as two red flag warnings are expected to go into effect, the first at 11 00 a. M. This afternoon. Temperatures in the 70s but the concern will be the winds especially in through 11 00, fast forward to 8 00 p. M. And the entire bay area will be under a red flag warning. Power impacts may be likely, gusty winds upwards of 40plusmilesperhour. Week, i the beautiful moment when a High School Football team helps a teammate to stand and then to find the end zone under the friday night lights. And an heir to the british throne gazes longingly through the glass of a kfc. Well explain. Up next, our sunday focus on the polls youre hearing and reading about every day from the National Race to the battleground states. How much faith should you put in those numbers, especially after the last time around . Polls are like a gps that can get you into the right neighborhood, but not necessarily to the exact address. While campaigning this week in philadelphia for joe biden, former president barack obama warned biden supporters not to become complacent with public polls that show the former Vice President leading President Trump. Democrats carry with them the scars of 2016, when many of them thought right up through Election Night Hillary Clinton was a sure thing against the celebrity businessman and reality tv host. So how much faith should voters put in the polls and other key indicators this time around . Nbcs Geoff Bennett has our sunday focus. This time four years ago, Hillary Clinton held a fivepoint National Lead over donald trump. We know how that turned out. Doomsday for democrats. This time around, its joe biden who is ahead in the polls. A creeping sense of deja vu for democrats. This time, theres a difference. For starters, bidens lead is bigger than clintons was, edging out President Trump nationally and in nearly every battleground state. I never take anything for granted, so the polls show this a close race, but with having a steady lead. Add to that mr. Trump is an incumbent, no longer an outsider, now facing the worst polling position for a president seeking reelection since george h. W. Bushen 1992. Well, i watch polls, but the polls are fake just like the reporting. I think were winning. I think were winning big. Polling expert Dave Wassermann says polls arent meant to provide perfect predictions. Polls are like a gps that can get you into the right neighborhood but not necessarily to the exact address. Polls did a good job of telling us that democrats were going to win the house back in 2018. And they also did a reasonable job of illuminating the weaknesses for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Beyond polling data, there are other signs that can be read as indications of who will win. Democrats are pointing to enthusiasm in the final stretch of the race. With biden crushing the competition in fundraising. Bidens campaign and affiliated committees raising a record 383 million in september. Compared to nearly 248 million for team trump. On the flipside, republicans are pointing to what they see as a sign of potential promise the gop narrowing the gap with democrats in voter registrations in three critical states, pennsylvania, north carolina, and florida. Great to be back in my home state, florida. Republicans hoping that heavy turnout on election day will help propel the president to a second term no matter what the polls show. Beyond the numbers, the best indication of whos winning in politics is often who is standing by their candidate. And recently, some republican senators started to distance themselves from President Trump. Like senator ben sasse of nebraska, heard on a Conference Call with constituents. The United States now regularly sells out our allies und his leadership. He mocks evangelicals behind close doors. His family has treated the presidency like a business opportunity. Hes flirted with white supremacists. The president hitting back. Now we have this guy sasse who wants to make a stam. Little ben. Little ben sasse. The republicans have to stick together better. But for now, both candidates, their parties, and their supporters are left reading the tea leaves. And geoff joins me now live. Geoff, good morning. Good to see you. As you know, the paranoia among democrats about polls is palpable right now. What did pollsters learn from the experience of 2016 . As you point out in the piece, the National Polls in 2016 were about right. Youre right about that. In 2016, many pollsters especially at the state level didnt adjust their samples to account for a voters education level. That was especially the case, willie, in states like michigan and wisconsin, which clinton lost. As we later learned, donald trump won an overwhelming number of white voters without a college aeducation or as white voters with fouryear degrees broke for Hillary Clinton. But again, polls should not be mistaken for crystal balls. Theyre snapshots in time. That doesnt mean their serve no purpose. With enough snapshots, you can get a clearer picture of how the race is shaping up with nine days to go. Nine days left before we can ignore the polls and look at the actual vote. Fascinating piece. Good to see you. Coming up next, a sunday sitdown with Drew Barrymore. A worldwide start since she was 7 years old. Now beginning a new chapter in her career as daytime talk show host, and opening up to her audience and to us about her struggles. Then a life well lived. The heroic doctor who led and won the ambitious global fight against one of the deadliest diseases in Human History. As we head to break, our photo of the week. The world series in the time of coronavirus. Los angeles dodgers fans watched a drivein screening of game three of the series in the parking lot of dodgers stadium. With the games being played in arlington, texas, fans honked the dodgers to victory, donald trump is lying again. Joe biden will not raise taxes on anyone making under 400,000. She starred as an impossibly cute little girl named gernie, and the movie became one of the most successful and iconic in the history of hollywood. Drew is the first to say becoming that famous that young was complicated. For four decades, the public has watched her every move under the celebrity spotlight, from Great Success as an actor, producer, and director, to personal struggles splashed out into the open. Today, drew is the mother of two young girls and now the host of her own talk show. Drew joined me from her glittering new studio for a virtual sunday sitdown with her dog douglas at her side. Drew, so great city you. Thanks for doing this. Always so great to see you, willie. The official highly coveted Drew Barrymore show mug. Well, i happen to have the biggest mug in town. And its the willie geist mug. I think were the inverts of each other. Were white with yellow and youre yellow with white. Thats perfect. Cheers. Cheers to you. Congratulations on the show. Thank you. I cant believe were here. After more than 40 years on screen. Doing good. Drew barrymore is taking on a new role. As daytime tv host. Drew, this is the onemonth anniversary of the first day of your show. You know, we all feel like we have been in it for a while, so its actually nice to hear were a month old bah that makes us feel uyouthful again. The 45yearold launched the Drew Barrymore show in september after more than a year of developing the idea and then making some changes for the age of covid19. Our virtual friends. What was it like for you to finally go out and do that first real show . Well, apparently, i was really excited. Im surprised they didnt just come out and like explode all over the floor. I think i am ridiculously goofy. Overenthusiastic. I love everything i overtalk and i dance sxarnd im a total spaz. And even station managers were like, wow, shes really enthusiastic when i got notes and stuff. Im leike, oh, god, i know. Please welcome drew barrym e barrymore. I want to see what people are doing that isnt mean or cruel or that people arent angry about. Thats why i built in drews news to the pilot. I just want a good news channel. This is drews news. Comedy was a big part for me. Everybody gets to have fun in late night. Lets bring that to daytime. Its taco news day. In the ultimate comedy compliment, saturday night live already has taken an interest in drews new show. Its the Drew Barrymore show. How drew you do . My biggest fear with Chloe Fineman is that shes going to know how much i love her and not be interested in, like, touching me as an impersonation anymore. Hello to all my beautiful wild flowers. Im actually just happy she knows who i am, really. And by the way, nailed it. Its so true. She really has me down. As im like, you know. But the schedule of a daily talk show is no joke. As drew hustles to put on five new hours every week. Have you gotten into that rhythm over this first month . Yeah, absolutely. But i always feel like every day im going to get fired. Im positive of it. Its so intimidating because the more you care about something, the more youre afraid of it going away. Drew begins her new job with a builtin connection to the audience. Established over a lifetime in the public eye. She has been open over the years about her own struggles. Including the legal emancipation from her parents at just 14 years old, and her divorce four years ago from will kopelman, the father of her daughters, franky and olive. I mean, part of this job, as youre saying, is sort of opening up your life and being honest and sharing. Do you feel comfort wable with that side of it . I dont think i would have been able to talk about it as openly at first. Because i couldnt make sense of it. I really did not take divorce well. I took it really hard. But the good news is that his family and i sort of made the most important choice to be so together and united and connected that i guess what they call family. I know from not growing up with any family whatsoever that that was the last thing i wanted to do for my daughters. I think thats why i took it so hard. Was like, oh, the ultimate promise i wanted to make with you and for you was to have this amazing family. And i found them. And theres something not working that isnt livable. How tragic is that . It took me five years to be able to speak with strength, articulation, perspective, hindsight, and see everything we did right because when we were getting divorced, it felt like everything was just wrong. I think it applies to everyone who thinks that something will be forever. And its not. Its so hard. Its like, i dont think i have recovered from that. I dont know how to open that up again. Its like something closed, and it stayed closed. I think im equally as scared to find love again as i would be as if it never happened. We have mutual friends who talk about you as a mom to olive and franky and say youre just the best. How do they like mom as talk show host . Theyre really cool with things. It was interesting because when they were younger, this whole life of mine didnt sit as well with them. And now, its the exact opposite. And like divorce, things fell into place finally. But its amazing that, like, my kids and i are happy, because theres been a lot of times i really did question, like, will we be happy . And we are. So thats, like, chokes me up. My girls are happy. Im happy. I feel really lucky, also, just to have a job right now. And this is an incredible job. And the fact that were all here in the studio working is something that i just dont lose sight of on a daily basis. Drew, im so proud of you and so happy for you. Youre doing great. Thank you for having me on. I cant believe im on a willie geist interview. Like really. Youre a repeat guest, by the way. Theres a short list of two timers. Youre on it. I will two time anytime for you. That doesnt sound right but you know what i mean. I will double down. I will drink this giant barrel of happiness. Thank you, willie. Cheers, drew. I mean, it is a giant mug of happiness. The Drew Barrymore show airs every weekday. Check your local listings for station and time. Microclimate highs this afternoon will be in the low 70s, upper 60s, and then itll turn windy. And this is where our concern is. What to expect ahead, gusty winds, the winds will increase later this afternoon. Overnight into monday as well. Power impacts may be likely. Ahead on sunday today our highs and lows of the week, including the livingering breathing embodiment of the state of massachusetts becomes a viral store as she waits to vote at fenway with dunkies in hand. Bring out the bold™ earlier this month, Regal Cinemas announced the closure of its 536 Movie Theaters across the United States. The countrys second largest theater chain had reopened in august but low attendance and the postponement of box office draws like the latest james bond movie forced regal to shut down again. Now, a small handful of those theaters are scheduled to reopen. All of this while tens of thousands of employees wonder when or if they will go back to work. Joe fryer looks at the future of the movies in our sunday spotlight. Ironman. If the movie is the star, then the supporting cast would have to be the marquee that grabs our attention. Lets all go to the lobby the giant tubs of popcorn that blanket our laps. The cavernous dark rooms that cloak secret kisses on first dates beneath a flick eering tunnel of lights. But simply, its the theater that so often makes the movie an experience. I would go at least once a week, sometimes more than once a week. But for film student ezra, those regular trips to the cinema came to a screeching halt when the pandemic hit. So when that was taken away from you, pretty suddenly, how have you handled it . It was very difficult. Going to a Movie Theater was not just an escape. It was also a way for me to find emotional catharsis in things i was struggling with. The theaters are struggling, too. They warn 70 of small and midsized theaters could close permanently with more than 100,000 jobs lost if lawmakers dont come to their rescue with financial relief. 70 filmmakers signed that, including paul. Dont think of this as a hollywood issue. Think about these small businesses, these medium sized businesses, all the people they employ. People depend on their livelihoods from these Movie Theaters. Im ready to party. He directed hit comedies like bridesmaids and the latest ghost busters. Okay, power up. Movies engineered for packed theaters brimming with laughter. How worried are you about the future of Movie Theaters . Im very worried about the short term. Im not worry about the long term. People are always going to want that group experience. I dont worry about that. The short term, the theaters have to survive. This month, amc, the worldla theater chain, warned it could close from bankruptcy. We dont have a product. We get very, very small number of movies, for sure not the big blockbusters. One blockbuster did finally open, but domestically has only grossed about 50 million. Many others like wonder woman 1984 and the latest james bond flick keep delaying their premieres. Big studies likely wont release their big budget films until major markets like new york city reopen. No new york, no movies, we need to close. Thats as simple as this. As for ezra its my biggest fear right now, is that theaters might not be able to stick around because, like, this place has been basically my second home. And i want to still have that home to go back to. For now, hes relieved some theaters have reopened, offering that much needed escape to the place that makes movies magic. For sunday today joe fryer, new york. Cant wait to get back to the movies. Joe, thanks so much. This week, we highlight another life well lived. Late last month, the worldwide death toll from covid19 crossed 1 million. In the United States, more than 226,000 people have died this year from the virus. Those numbers are unbearable. But consider in the 20th century another virus killed at least 300 million people. An american doctor led the fight to stop it. Born in boston and raised in connecticut by a mother who took in german refugees during world war ii and a father who worked across the south for the naacp, dr. Michael lane finished his medical internship and took a ja job at the cdc in 1963. Still in his 20s, the epidemiologist began a crusade to eradicate one of the oldest and deadliest diseases in Human History smallpox. In 1967, the cdc began working with the world health O Organization on an ambitious smallpox eradication program. As the highly contagious virus tore through developing countries. It killed, by some estimates, up to half a billion people in the 20th century. Dr. Lane and his team traveled the world teaching along with the w. H. O. Techniques of prevention, treatment, and quarantine. And vaccinating millions of vulnerable people. Global infection rates quickly began to plunge. In 1977, 13 years after dr. Lane began his march across the globe, the last case of smallpox was detected in a hospital cook in somalia. The man made a full recovery. In may of 1980, the w. H. O. Publicly declared the world and all of its people have won freedom from smallpox. There have been no naturally occurring cases since. And smallpox remains the only Infectious Disease to have been eradicated. Dr. Michael lane, a leader of the Successful Mission to rid the world of smallpox, died on wednesday at home in atlanta. He was 84 lucky uhoh the magics disappearing sing along to help me fix it hearts, stars and horseshoes, clovers and blue moons, unicorns, rainbows and tasty red balloons grab your lucky charms and keep singing sprinting past every leak in our softest, smoothest fabric. Shes confident, protected, her strength respected. Depend. The only thing stronger than us, is you. It is time for the highs and lows of the week. And our first high goes to the recordbreaking enthusiasm of americans heading out early to the polls this election season. One woman in boston was particularly enthusiastic as she voted at fenway park and covered every last square on the massachusetts bingo card. I want to vote in some way because we have all been cooped up inside for a little bit. I got my dunkies, and im ready to vote for joe biden but i wish i was voting for bernie sanders. But its a team sport. That is either rachel drach reprying her character on saturday night live or boston area native laura eastoff. Shes got the accent, of course. Shes at fenway wearing a cam newton patriots jersey. She has a face mask with the logos of all four boston sports teams, and most importantly, shes proudly waving her dunkies. A dunkin iced coffee. As you can imagine, her interview with local station whdh went viral. Laura said she may have laid on the accent a little thick for the interview, but she is boston to the core. She even listened to dropkick murphy on the way to vote. Laura, you are massachusetts perfection. Our first low goes to another enthusiastic sports fan who found himself in the middle of the action during a Major League Baseball playoff game during a strange moment. On wednesday night, there Tampa Bay Rays took on the Los Angeles Dodgers in game two of the world series. In the bottom of the six, will smith hit a home run to left field right into the hands of a fan who makes a nice catch, but its what comes next that has everybody fascinated and confused. Lets go back to the home run. What . But why . Our guy looks for a second like hes going to toss the ball back, but realizes he wants that. So instead, he offers his glove to the baseball gods. Tossing it onto the field where it lands at the feet of rays left fielder randy orose arena. Looks like some of the synapses were not firing in the left field bleachers. Our next high goes to a beautiful moment for senior brady sprick during the second to last Football Game of his high school career. Brady, who played in platt, south dakota, was paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident during his freshman year. During the Fourth Quarter of the teams game against gregory almost exactly three years after bradys accident, his teammates brought him onto the field in his wheelchair. Then helped him to stand and score the last touchdown of their big win. Going to go first and goal for brady. He was actually an instrumental player. And brady is going to march into the end zone. Aided by the seniors. Wow. Bradys mother said the touchdown was doubly emotional because it came as a surprise to her husband, who was celebrating his 50th birthday. Brady had a long road to recovery. His family called the moment just the boost he needed. Way to go, brady, and great job by the coaches and players on both teams. Our final low goes to that feeling when youre on the outside looking in with your nose pressed against the glass of life, or at least your kfc, also youre an heir to the british throne. Prince william and Kate Middleton made an appearance on the streets of london to view portraits from kates photo project, but when a stroll takes him past the kentucky fried chicken, what is he supposed to do . He couldnt help but stop and drool over the offering, stunning a woman getting a finger looking good meal, and getting a look at a member of the royal family. Kfc dubbed the prince his royal thighness. General washington, i am happy to report the American Revolution is now complete. Hi sabrina hi jen hi. So youre the scientist here.
