It started off as a quarantine thing and then it made sense for the character, and then i have it and its terrible i dont know what to do. It doesnt feel good i just did a scene with Queen Latifah and she actually held it and kept looking me in the eyes while holding and then when they called cut, i saw her face was kind of like, whoa, that was rough. [ laughter ] seth you have two daughters. How do they feel im always fascinated by a kids feedback on things like facial hair i got my kid here sunny, come here say hi to seth say hi see, thats sunny. Hi. Seth hi, sunny how are you . Good. I grew up in bedford, which is the a slightly nicer town than your dad is from. [ laughter ] hes got more buddies did you guys know each other when you little . I raised him i was a babysitter for him [ laughter ] i taught him i taught him how to be funny when he was a little boy. Seth he would come back and do a program, it was like a summer camp where he would come back and take kids who showed promise in comedy and would just take us out to the woods yes, sir. Yes, sir i really got seth going. Sarah silverman didnt listen enough all right, i love you. Get out of here. Tell seth thanks muah, i love you okay, go, go bye thank you seth bye nice to meet you yeah, shes nice, man her and her sister are very nice seth thats good you got two nice kids. But i actually i was thinking i watching this movie because your character hubie is has multigenerations of people in his hometown have bullied him. Yes seth and i think its a very valuable it must be nice to have your kids on set because the message is of course to be nice to people you know whats funny my two kids, they are so antibullying. Their generation is growing up calling each other on like, thats not nice you cant do that youre mean dont say that. Its pretty awesome. Whereas, our New Hampshire upbringing was full attack at all times. [ laughter ] seth yeah. I feel like when we lived through a new england upbringing, it was a real trial by fire. [ laughter ] we got our comedy chops from that neighborhood, man and but yes, it is hubie does get picked on a little bit too much and thank god things are gonna be okay for him at the end of the day but, wow he is good at ignoring the pain hes very good at that seth this is a halloween film did you had you long wanted to do a halloween film like this you know, seth, i did eight crazy nights for hanukkah that was maybe 15 years ago. So i was allowed my hanukkah movie. I dont really know what other holiday theyd let me make halloween, ive been celebrating my entire life and had the best time ever with it. So netflix was like, could you do a could you do some sort of a whats that called again a whats halloween again . Seth holiday oh, yeah, a holiday [ laughter ] that is right, man that was a dumb one for the set i wouldnt really that lets you know i havent been sleeping much but, yes, they wanted to do a holiday movie and i figured oh, halloween. Im allowed to do that one seth that was a you put me in a real weird situation there because i couldnt i thought i knew the word you were looking for, but i kind of couldnt believe it was the word you couldnt find [ laughter ] im really disgusting myself right and in front of my kid who is staring at me she is like, thats a baby word what dont you know right now . Im sorry about humiliating the whole family on that seth i dont know if you knew this about me because watching the movie, which takes place in salem, my mom grew up in marblehead. See thats incredible seth crazy, right . Yeah. That we lived there the whole time we shot a lot there. And what a town. Seth its amazing. I didnt want to leave there. Its the most beautiful water and the people are great we get to know they, like, they supermarkets we shot in and there was ice cream every yn did you used to go there a lot growing up, seth seth yeah, we went there all the time my grandmother lived right by abbott hall, right in the sort of center of town there and that town, its so beautiful there. Seth gorgeous. So you used to walk around there as a kid would you ride bikes there and stuff . Seth we i think we we rode some bikes. We walked around a little bit more cause i dont think wed bring our bikes. But we you know saw it in the movie and i had a real flashback. You have a scene in the Salem Witch Museum yes, yes. Seth and we used to go there and that plays scared the bejesus out of me. Of course that scared me as an adult and made me tense. And my kids didnt we shot a scene for a day there and everybody is like, could you please turn the music off . We get scared in there but everybody in salem and in marblehead and everywhere we shot in massachusetts, they were so happy they were great to us and also we brought halloween with us in the summertime so it was all over the town was decorations and stuff and it was a lot hotter than it usually is during halloween, but it was just really nice and nice memories we had. Halloweens the best holiday for sure its just guaranteed happiness and i wish it never went away. I hate when november shows up and youre like, we are done with that one . God seth yeah, true. cause there is a lot more cause i feel like you dont have any like family drama with halloween. Whereas like all of a sudden then you go into thanksgiving and christmas and hanukkah and its all family. That was a clip from hubie halloween, starring adam sandler the great june squibb, right can you believe june squibb threw that shirt on for us [ laughter ] seth and its by the way its the first of many shirts you make her throw on over the course of the film she was so cool june was, i think, 91, 92yearsold when we shot the movie. She would stay up every night with us. You know, cause its halloween and we did a million night shoots and we were all hanging out, 4 00 in the morning. June would kind of sit in her chair, chow down on ice cream. Theyd say, june, we need you. Shed put the shirt on, a new curse word would be on it. Shed go out there and do her stuff, knew everything, man. She was excellent. She is a very nice lady. Seth i have to tell you, you know, Mike Shoemaker is a producer on this show and you know shoemaker from years of working with him at snl. I started watching the movie in my office this morning and like two minutes into it i pause it and i went and got shoemaker and im like, you just have to come in. We have to watch this together and you know one of the things is you have built now this sort of sandler cinematic universe, which is, you start seeing the people that we have come to, you know, know that are your friends. Yes seth and its just so fun when quinn shows up and meadows shows up and kevin james shows up and then people who you know, buscemi, and its such a delight. And you guys just must have so much fun we do, man. Every day that its like we look on the call sheet and youre like, oh great, quinns here this week. And then kevin james stays the whole summer and schneider and buscemi, man hes the guys are all and tim meadows and maya and everybody is like my good friends. Like, they are all your friends too. So its a perfect, perfect time to make a movie with your buddies and its summertime and youre in marblehead and youre eating too much and its good. Seth and both daughters were happy to be in the film . Yeah. Yeah yes, yes, absolutely its, i mean, they love it they both like acting and stuff. But they also like its summertime so they also like when you wrap and get to go home and be with your friends and hang out my sunnys here, shes shaking her head no at me. She wants more she likes acting seth that is good. We were talking about how you liked halloween. You have some photos of your early days and who would help you make these costumes because this has a real diy feel to it right there. That is my dad wrapped me in the tin foil. That was, we got the robot mask and we said what can we we build around that and dad whipped out the tin foil and started piling it on and it stuck pretty good for about maybe a house or two and then we went with just the mask. [ laughter ] seth now i will say, i dont know about your neighborhood, but halloween in New Hampshire for me, you needed a car pretty much oh, thats bedford. You spread out more. We had houses we were right on top of each other like you know . But, how about you, bud . Was it did you, when you were a kid, youre younger than me, but when i was young, they made halloween every day was on a sunday. Seth yeah. You couldnt right seth absolutely. Youd trick or treat on a sunday, buddy. And then its over [ laughter ] seth yeah, we didnt get an extra day. No extra 31st yeah, yeah how about you, bud what did you dress up as, seth seth i think the most homemade one i had was one year i decided i wanted to be a pile of garbage this is i dont remember what i was trying but my dad, like, in that really great dad way, just cut out a bunch of pieces of paper and i was just very confidently Walking Around town as a pile of garbage. My grandmother, one year the garbage is excellent, by the way. What did your brother go as that year seth i dont remember. My brother, i remember one year, definitely Luke Skywalker. I think that was that weird thing. You both look like Luke Skywalker seth exactly so, i think my parents were trying to save some money on the costume. It was like, who do you look like already hey, you son of a gun you two had that i had to go as tevye every year [ laughter ] but, fellows, i also my my grandmother one year, they dressed me as dracula. My father put white on my face and my mother got the fake teeth for me they combed my hair back and then i had to wear the cape. And my grandmother was a seamstress and she made me a cape out of a blanket so i could keep warm in New Hampshire isnt that smart thinking . Seth thats very smart and it does. Its pretty cold by the time you have to go out and trick or treat in New Hampshire for sure oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. By the end it starts off nice, 3 00 or something and then all of a sudden New Hampshire it started to get do you remember whipping tomatoes at each other, like going into tomato gardens and whipping them and trying to hurt seth no. That must have aged out, the whipping of tomatoes that was a halloween tradition i think it was just, maybe it was acorns it was something, we threw something at each other. [ laughter ] seth i do remember like, a lot of chucking of food in my youth, but i dont remember tomatoes seth, could you whistle with the acorn . Seth oh, yeah, i could whistle with an acorn. Absolutely could you do this one [ whistling seth i think i could try i feel like i aspired to that. I dont know if i quite made it. I got it done, seth i got it done. [ laughter ] seth so, i want to say this movie is its so much fun its, you know, its not families can watch it. Its not a terrifying movie. Right seth i want to say and i know ive talked to you about how much i liked it because i think the scariest movie of last year, not a halloween movie, uncut gems was White Knuckle the whole time yeah, yeah. Seth and i tried to i watched it with my parents and, of course, you know they are huge fans of the sandman they couldnt do it. I think they are at age where they cannot watch something that intense for that long. I agree with your parents its too much. I know it is certainly my mother, my motherinlaw, anybody over a certain age its just like, oh that ending. That was too much. I didnt need to see that. I got yelled at the other day on the set here a guy telling me, man, why they do that to you at the end of gems like i have to defend that ending it had to happen [ laughter ] seth it had to happen. That was fantastic this movie was a delight and it is always just such a joy to see you. Thanks for being here, adam. Im excited to see you, seth. How are you, jason hey seth, nice to meet you i guess is what were doing. Seth it is lovely to meet you as well, and im so happy to have you here. How have you been . How have you been handling your quarantine oh, im living the dream. Im just [ laughter ] what did something change i never left my house anyways, so this is seth well, you know, some people have obviously used this time to pick up new hobbies. And i did read that you did want to be a magician back in the day. Was this something you recommitted yourself to . Did you have any skill for it back in the day . Arguably, no. I was very serious about it. I was one of those kids that, you know, like had the books, and had the kits, and went to magic camp and thought, oh, im the next doug henning. [ laughter ] and until i actually met other children my age who were already far superior to my paltry skills so i kind of left magic behind and i moved right around that time i was about 12 or 13 years old, and i moved from one town to another, and the first kids that picked me up were the theater kids and i started going to the theater a lot and i went, oh, thats an illusion the theater is an illusion ill do that that seems lucrative. And i switched over. Seth well, im certainly glad you ended up making that choice this film sort of satirizes hollywood, and the film industry, and how religion is depicted in films. And because it even was about religion, and before anybody had seen it, it did sort of draw some fire from commentators who maybe thought that you were going to make light of it. Yes i think perhaps the dollar sign in the logo might have somehow offended a few people of faith there was a sort of a i wouldnt say a big, but, you know, a moderate outcry among people of faith that felt the movie would be christian bashing. And i couldnt really speak to it at the time because i hasnt seen the finished film nobody had seen the finished film, which is what gave everybody the perfect right to weigh in on it, sight unseen and when i finally did see it, its actually very sweet i do not believe it makes fun of anybody of faith, but it does have something to say about people who take advantage of people of faith and thats more about what the movie is all about. Seth and i think thats certainly a more interesting thing to make a movie about. You have certainly played characters who have Different Levels of moral integrity over the years. Really . [ laughter ] seth and, maybe one of the best of all time my santa claus seemed like a jolly guy, but yeah, sure. [ laughter ] seth one that ive heard you still hear about is your role in pretty woman, which is i guess by loathed by certain people who see that film . Love to be loathed. Yeah, i had talked about it recently and i think that it went from an anecdote to a headline but basically what i was talking about is, when pretty woman came out, i was a working actor, but i was certainly not a recognizable, nationally known actor. And suddenly i would walk around new york and women in particular would spot me from about half a block away and venom would come into their eyes, and i had many, many stranger women to me come up and go, i dont like you i dont like you. And then we would laugh about it, but a few of them who really kind of bought the movie hook line and sinker, i had one woman who spit at me, not on me, but she spit kind of at me cause she was so disgusted by me and i had a couple of women, and it was playful it made it sound like it wasnt, but i had some women who playfully came up and punched me in the arm, smacked me in the head, telling me what i had done to that lovely girl was so inappropriate and i agreed with them in real life and in the movie, i surrendered. I immediately surrendered. Seth and i think is speaks to, you know, of course, it takes the same skill to play a villain as a hero and speaks to your skills as an actor that you landed that so well. Theres something despicable about me and yet somehow loveable despicable and loveable. Seth garry marshall, of course directed that film. I was lucky enough to meet gary a few times. And correct me if im wrong, gary met you when you were were you an usher . He told me a story about how he met you. Garry marshall that could be i dont remember that. Well, no i know what hes referring to, but i dont think he met me. Seth okay. When he had a play i went to Boston University and the theater students would usher at the colonial theater up in boston when prebroadway shows came out seth ah. And garry was directing a show called the roast, i think, about a comedian roast. And i was ushering for that, and i may have mentioned that to him, and now he went to his grave thinking he met me then. I guarantee you he did not [ laughter ] seth its working with someone like gary is, obviously, a thrill someone else that i imagine was a thrill for you, you worked with Stephen Sondheim. I did seth on a show, merrily we roll along, which theres a fantastic documentary about because this was not a show that ran for a particularly long time no. [ laughter ] it keeps coming back, not with the original cast. It is a remarkable show in many ways its ambitious as hell its never been a show that was critically or artistically very successful although it has this amazing life theyre making a movie of it right now with ben platt and beanie feldstein, but i think it keeps coming back because of steves work its this amazing score wrapped in a little bit of an enigma of a play seth what was i imagine you know, any time you work on a show of that magnitude as a young actor youre intimidated it must be even more so when youre working with Stephen Sondheim what was that relationship like . Yeah. Yeah, you know, i imagined in my wildest dreams i might get to broadway when i was 80 and at 20 im making my broadway debut with hal prince and Stephen Sondheim so its christ and moses im working with christ and moses and they couldnt have been nicer we were all kids they were lovely they were nurturing. They were very father like figures, but you know, im always going, oh, its Stephen Sondheim its Stephen Sondheim. And he radiates this genius that the rest of us do not have and i kept wanting to make small talk with Stephen Sondheim to bond our absolute imminent friendship and i remember saying to him, theres nothing you can say that isnt stupid so, i said to him if youve ever heard the score for a little night music, the first three songs in that show are called, now, soon, and later, each sung by different people and then amazingly they are all sung at the same time and they fit over each other and you hear snippets of the lyrics from each one that make it brilliant and i remember, you know, saying, hey, im going to have an artisttoartist conversation with steve sondheim. I said, steve, the first time you heard now, soon, and later sung over each other, were you like amazed that it worked . And he looked at me like i was from another planet and went, no. I knew it would work i knew it would work. [ laughter ] and that was my uphill climb for every conversation trying to impress Stephen Sondheim with something, anything that i could desperately grab seth im sure youre not the only person whos ever been in that situation i want to finish by asking i have two boys. You have two boys, 24, 28, a bit older than mine. How did they noahs 25, yes. Yes. Seth how did they respond . Are they fans of your work have they seen a lot of it um, i wouldnt say a lot. They have dabbled. Theyre dabblers they are duly unimpressed and uninterested with most of what i do in show business and in life. [ laughter ] im kind of a passerby. And the kind of perfect example is when my older son gabe was 12 or 13 seinfeld was in the thick of its success and he had never seen it. But, you know, he had gotten a lot of cachet, i guess, at school from youre georges kid, which i dont think thats a real opener but [ laughter ] and he said to me, you know, what is this seinfeld thing what is it dad what is it . So i sent him into the tv room with some dvds of a couple good episodes and he comes out i think he watched two and i said, what do you think . [ laughter ] and with all his 12yearold pride, he went, youre kind of an ass [ bleep ]. [ laughter ] and i wanted to go, you know this ass [ bleep ] is spending 40 thousand a year to put you through elementary school. So thank uncle jerry when you see him, you know [ laughter ] seth well, again he wasnt quite wrong on the read of the character.
