Im assuming its still going well. Yeah. I think everyone is just so excited to have this exhibition opened. It was scheduled to open in march. We were ready to welcome everyone. But, of course, because of covid19 we had to close our doors. It has been some few months now just waiting. Were finally free to reopen for everyone to see and also for everyone to just enjoy the show. Talk about the International Treasure that you have right now at your disposal for the visitors to come and enjoy. A lot of what the exhibition is focusing on clothing, jewelry. All of these objects were locked away. It was after 50 years after the death. They were like a treasure for everyone. The objects help us learn more about the person behind the art. This exhibition really introduces us more. It is there until when . Actually, we havent released the news yet. We can assure everyone you will see it throughout the year. Then i think very soon we will be updating everyone. Very good. What is it about frieda carla . Everyone was clamoring for her. Women and little girls right now, clamor for her. What is it about her that transcends so many generations . I think she could show that despite all the pain she had to endure all along her life, she was someone that could overcome the pain and use that terrible illness she suffered during her life in paintings. Many people can connect with her. People with disabilities. But also people that have to suffer different issues. Who cannot suffer from any problem . I think thats the way that the people connect with her. I think thats why she keeps on being so successful. Her exhibitions nowadays. She connects with my little girls. Maria, i have been there. Is this a mini experience, where you are able to see thing u. S y havent seen before . Yeah. A lot is being showcased here on the west coast. Something different is a focus to san francisco. What a group we are joined by abe sanchez. And guy johnson, the son of maya angelou. Welcome to the show. Thank you very much. Thank you. We are here to talk about an official project you have been working on for a while, a song for cesar. We are happy about that. Talk about why it took so long and your vision, what you want folks to get out of it. Well, i guess the reason it took so long, we had a few bumps in the road. The vision kept us going. We worked on this project years ago. The purpose and vision was always it became farm workers. Whenever i think of bumps in the road and making this film, i say, you have to continue. Its for the farm workers and its to honor this great hero of ours. Thats been the primary purpose from the beginning and still remains that today. Light needs to be shed on farm workers. The contribution to our society and they are underserved, so to speak. Thats what keeps me going. As many years. Im pleased we have a special guest, my good friend guy johnson is here today. He was the impetus or what lit the match to start this project for us. Thats why i wanted to tell that story and have him on with us today. Thats where we began. Thats awesome. Lets place a short clip. We will come back and talk on the other side. See the man bending down with the shorthandled hoe this is a song as you are growing up, you see you are being asked to go and enslave yourself and get paid 90 corre 0 cents an hour. Talk about your work and experience in putting this together. You know, it started as a music video really. What happened was that we had a friend, who is a mutual friend of the three of us, who pulled us together. We had a meeting with i met abe for the first time and guy as well for the first time. We got together to put the song, which he had done with Jorge Santana, to put it to film. We decided to put together a sixminute music video. It went on from there. We produced a dvd for the cesar chavez foundation. Then for the next two or three years, we continued doing work, doing interviews to help supplement that video, that dvd. We really didnt know that we were working on a film. We didnt know we were working on a documentary. It sort of happened to us. 15 years went by. Here we are. We cant wait to see it and for its release. Mr. Krjohnson, the son of maya angelou, a legend in his own right. Mr. Johnson, your relationship with farm workers and the movement dates back decades as well. Yes. I think when we first met, there were already marches. I remember luis gaska we were at some place in berkeley. It was a fundraiser. Luis came and played some music with snooky flowers. Do you remember snooky flowers . A lot. Yeah. And they said, lets go to the march. He said, lets go to the march. We all got in our cars the next morning and drove up to 99. Wasnt it on 99 that they came from stockton . And i guess we joined them about 20 miles out. I made the mistake of not trying to find a bathroom first. That march was so long, because by the time i got to the gas station, the gas stations were locked up. They were not allowing anybody to make use of them. The spirit, the phenomenal spirit of the farm workers was really amazing. Because here with people who had been beaten. And i mean brutalized. Then they come out and they do it in a nonviolent manner. Cesar chavez was majestic in his leadership. A real hero. A real hero. Talk about the gentleman we heard from just now, guy johnson, the inspiration he was in your work. We embarked on it as a result of guy hearing the song. He said, you have to put video on that. I got a friend. Thats where the story began. We werent intending on that. Whats really important is guys passion for it and then he said, my mom has to see this. I will never forget. She gotta see this. His mom came to town. She was speaking. All of a sudden, maya angelou is sitting in his living room, turned on the tv, put it on the cd on a tape. He left and i sat there with maya and i was just in awe of having this great lady i admired so much view our piece. She sat there. To this day, its what inspired me in the making, because when she watched it she was rocking back and forth, watching it. Then i saw a tear come down her cheek. Then at the end, she clapped so hard. She had a big ring and it flew across the room. She looked at me and she said she loved the film. Said, what are you going to do with this . I told her, people have said, do a documentary, but that was out of our reach. We were happy with that piece for the foundation. She said, no, no, she said, you are going to do the documentary. This is not just your song, its my song, its the little boy over here in oklahoma or wherever different areas where the underserved, less privileged thats everybodys song. You do the documentary. At that point, i could do nothing but promise her i would do it. Thats really what inspired 15 years for me from the heart, 15 years. Then it evolved into this passion when it was for a great cause like guy mentioned, which that took over the next phase of the passion. Thats awesome. We are talking with the creators of a song for cesar. We will talk more on this great documentary. Stay with us. Stockton, there were a lot of issues where they wouldnt pay them. Where he back. Its behind you in the banner and its on the great guitar behind you, i remember i asked Jorge Santana why he always said yes to you and he always told me, because yes as far as performing with him. He said, i know his heart is in the right place and whatever he says we need to do, were going to do it. It goes to show the spirit for the united farm workers. Thank you. One thing when i touched on as we embarked on the journey, it was the people part of the movement that we got to start interviewing. What happened was the story just evolved. The story told itself. What happened also with musicians and artists, which guy mentioned earlier, snooky flowers and luis and many were on board supporting that movement. It kind of became a lot about the music and the arts, the theater supported the movement. Because it was such an important movement. It was really filled with the story about all the music and the arts. This just continued. It blossomed into so many aspects of the movement and what cesar ignited with that cause. If i may just interject, it wasnt that long ago that almost all of us had people working in the fields. I mean, black, asian, hispanic as well as white. It wasnt that long ago. So this movement struck to the very heart of where we are. I mean, people struggling in the fields in all sorts of uncomfortable positions. I have to tell you, i know a little bit about it, because i picked grapes in Southern France for six weeks. I had never really done that kind of work. But i ran out of money while i was in europe. There was that possibility. And when i saw it, it made me really aware when i came back home what the foarm workers wer dealing with. Grapes are easy. Its things like strawberries. I always say that farm work is probably the best job i ever had because it really humbles you. It makes you the person you are. You said the film took a turn at some point . It was definitely about the farm workers struggle. We wanted to tell a story about the things that guy was just talking about and also about the importance of figures like cesar and delores werta in the movement. We realized, this was a story that had been told in film before in different ways. It became clear to us pretty early on that what we had to do was tell the story about how artists, musicians, theater people, writers, painters worked together with the ufw, with cesar in supporting this movement, in moving the movement forward. A lot of things came together. Because we learned, in fact, that cesar himself was very much interested in culture and music and was a big jazz fan. Its like all the pieces kind of came together. As guy said, it wasnt that long ago and it was when people like Carlos Santana and john baez and the other people in the film were young people. Supporting this movement and using their creative talents, their arts to become a part of the movement. We are almost out of time. When can we see it . Well, we are pleased to say it will come out in 2021 in march. Because thats his birthday. Its the period of the year he is honored throughout the nation. Its a perfect fit to bring it out then. Watch for it. We have a Campaign Starting in november as far as prerelease to let people know. We want to get it out to as many people as we can, this awareness, especially in these times. Lets make a deal. Come back before it premieres and we will give you the half hour, because its worth talking about. Thank you all so much. Gentlemen, one more thing . Please. You realize the grapes of wrath was banned in the valley. It was about whites. This is about people of color. And this was a story that needed to be told. Really needed to be told. Well put, sir. Thank you so much. Thank you for the work you did. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for watching. We will see you here in a few weeks. Wet dishes . Residue . Spots . Its not your dishwashers fault. Simply add finish jetdry 3in1 to rinse dry and shine your dishes.
