Live shows all through the election. Theres something so great about having snl live. Not that i can stay up for it but i like that its there. We want to begin this half an hour with a check of the headlines. We start with the fears of a new coronavirus wave as the number of cases across the country gets closer to 8. 1 million. More than three dozen states right now, many of them in the midwest, are reporting an alarming increase in cases as the death toll has now approached 220,000. It comes as pfizer announced it will not seek authorization of its vaccine until at least midnovember. Heading overseas, some breaking news overnight. A horrific attack in france. Several people have been detained near paris in connection with the brutal killing of a teacher in the middle of the street. The teacher was beheaded after showing caricatures of islams profit mohammed to his class. Police shot and killed the suspect after he refused to surrender. In baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers kept their playoff hopes alive after beating the braves 73 last night. There they go. And a high fly ball to left. Back at the wall, it is gone boom goes the dynamite dodgers catcher will smith hitting the go ahead 31 home run against braves pitcher will smith. The first time two players with the same name have faced off in the postseason. Will smith got the best of will smith. The braves lead the series 32. The astros avoided elimination with a 74 win over the tampa raiys. Both games are being played today to determine who goes to the world series. Also this morning, two College Football games wont be going on as scheduled today after a number of positive covid19 cases sidelined the players postponing those games. Its just the latest in a string of disruptions to hit some of the nations most wellknown teams. Nbcs kathy park is following this story for us. Kathy, good morning to you. Hey, kristen, good morning to you. Testing and Covid Protocols are all in place but players and even staff havent been able to dodge the virus. With positive cases climbing, there are growing concerns on how teams will be able to get the season over the goal line. This morning, the pandemic is putting College Football on pause yet again. Todays matchup between the Florida Gators and lsu tigers has been postponed to december. We have 18 current positives. We have another three walkons who are positive, so a total of 21 current team members. Covid also sidelining todays vanderbilt missouri game. With a spotlight growing on the safety of the s. E. C. Football season and its players, floridas hoecoach, dan mullen, walking back his comments after urging upwards of 90,000 fans to pack their home stadium. I certainly apologize if i offended people or anybody out there. Alabama tackling its own crisis with legendary Coach Nick Saban testing positive for the virus this week. While in quarantine, saban didnt stop working, monitoring practice and speaking to reporters through zoom. At this point im completely asymptomatic, feel fine. The s. E. C. Requires three consecutive negative tests before saban can be cleared in time for kickoff tonight but his results are still unknown. And despite the outbreak, the big ten and pac12 are still charging ahead. There were a thousand positive cases when students came back to alabama, but the Football Team kept practicing and playing and preparing for games. I think thats when you saw the pressure building on leagues like the pac12 and the big ten that decided to poef postpone t seasons. Theyre saying theyre playing through this. Football is back this fall, even with covid rushing the country. And while College Football continues to move forward with the season, unlike the nfl which is also seeing major disruptions with outbreaks, College Programs dont have the resources to protect their athletes like the pros. Kristen, peter, back to you guys. Kathy park, thank you. Check in with dylan right now. Dylan, none of those tailgates because nobody is really going to these games, but i guess you can do it in the backyard and still enjoy watching from home. Thats a good point. In some part of the country. In other parts we are still looking at really cold temperatures so i personally prefer to stay indoors anyway. The area im talking about right now is across the northern plains, the upper midwest, the Northern Rockies, all cold enough for snow. We do have Winter Weather alerts and advisories in effect for those areas. We could see accumulating snows as the snow continues to come down on the back side of this system. You can see across bismarck, north dakota, into fargo and even into central and northern minnesota we have some of that snow. Across the Northern Rockies as well. So its going to last most of the day today. And then on sunday were going to see it almost push into parts of the Central Plains as well, into nebraska it could be cold enough for some of that snow as well although we would see lessary couples lesser accumulations. We could end up with 4 to 6 inches of snow. So i feel like it was warm lately and now the and were still seeing elevated fire danger. Especially for the north bay mountains and the east bay hills. A reminder that that red flag warning will be in effect through about 8 00 a. M. Today and the on and off mountain gusts have us on a higher alert. A slight cooldown when it comes to the temperatures. Yesterday we saw some record highs and today in the low 90s for the south bay and mid 90s for the interior valleys and well get a little bit more 70s around the coast. And thats your latest forecast. Back to you guys. All right, dylan, im with you. I cannot believe were talking about snow. Thank you. Reporter should we get rid of the penny . Its one of those things where i think people get attached emotionally to the way things have been. Reporter and now the pandemic, oddly enough, has given advocates of eliminating the penny the perfect opportunity. Its time to retire the penny. Why do you think that is . The penny just isnt very valuable anymore. Inflation has eroded its value so much over time in the United States, a person earns about a penny every two seconds and so its going to take you a couple of seconds to even use a penny, then what do you gain from using the penny . Since our time is valuable and time is money and the money is not valuable, its time to stop using this money. Reporter each penny costs about two cents to produce. In fact just last year, the u. S. Mint manufactured more than 7 billion pennies at a loss of nearly 70 million. But this isnt just about dollars and cents. Since march, a lot of consumers have been staying home. Keep in mind, the red flag warning expires by 8 00 a. M. And then more details in a few minutes. Half moon bay is typically one of the cooler parts, so slightly shocking. Thanks. I know people who live on the coast and the peninsula you will need a fan. 24hour change look at Half Moon Bay, a 25 degree difference. We have had the onshore flow which is drying us out and helped to warm us up in Half Moon Bay yesterday at 82 degrees early on. I had a couple of viewers saying its 6 00 a. M. , it literally feels like im walking into the area with a heater thats what it felt like for a lot of the bay area. Good news in terms of the wind. This set to expire a 8 00 a. M. For the north bay mountains and the east bay hills but we want to remain on an alert because well, its dry out there. The humidity is low and any sort of brushfire can quickly start or spread much like what we have seen happen in the couple of situations. So as far as the wind speeds go though, notice in santa rosa and napa it will stay breezy through this afternoon and we get an improvement in to tomorrow, and we get the shift from the off shore flow to more of the on shore flow. The air quality forecast is going to be moderate and the bay area air Quality Management district did issue an advisory because, well, we could see some of the drifting smoke with the hazy skies. But on that day, alyssa knew what she was going to say. I wanted to tell him how his incarceration ruined my life, you know . Im going to tell him how hard it was, how it was all his fault. Im going to go and lay into him. Reporter alyssa was 9 years old when her father was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Like so many children of incarcerated parents, her life spiralled out of control. My childhood was honestly pretty rough because of it. Reporter thats what she was going to tell her dad in the san quentin visiting room. Except she didnt. And before i could even say anything he wrapped his arms around him and he said im really sorry i left you, i love you, and i take full responsibility for being gone. I should have been there for you. Reporter it was a moment that changed not just their relationship but the direction of her life. And explains in a round about way while on a recent friday hundreds of books were scattered across her backyard and thousands more still in the garage. You see, alyssa a 27yearold senior at uc santa cruz is the founder and director of a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families of the incarcerated particularly the children. I wouldnt have this passion and this drive for making a difference in their lives if i didnt go through what i went through. Reporter and in 2020, with covid shutting down inperson visitizations, that meant alyssa would have to get creative to keep families connected. I have a small idea, i thought, wow, what would happen if we sent books to children on behalf of their incarcerated family, because theyre not connecting as much right now. Theres no cost to participate. We received a letter reporter her small idea is growing into a big one very quickly. A Pilot Program at san quentin where an incarcerated parent can request a book be sent to their child has proven so popular, alyssa is expanding it to every prison in the state. I have heard it from so many people that have donated to us, i never even thought about the kids. Reporter alyssa knows first hand that children of the incarcerated can often feel invisible. I hope your morning off to the pretty good start, maybe making some breakfast. We have the sun coming out in walnut creek, great shot there. It will be another warm day but i have some good news at least when it comes to the concern for elevated fire dangers that we have seen in the past two days. We remain under a microclimate weather alert because its still pretty dry out there. And also that red flag warning did end up getting extended. A great shot of San Francisco. Clear skies there. San jose 61 degrees. Noticeably cooler this morning compared to yesterday. Look at that, nevada, 11 degrees cooler. Even in san jose two degrees cooler and the most noticeable one is Half Moon Bay. 25 degrees cooler. We have that off shore flow that sort of helped to warm us up and its whats keeping up dry and whats raising the concern for elevated fire danger. The red flag warning which was originally set to expire yesterday has extended to 8 00 a. M. We are 15 minutes away from that expiring in the north bay mountains and east bay hills. The winds are expected to diminish. And as far as the concerns for the heat, the heat advisory also expired yesterday but it will still be warm into the 80s and 90s. Definitely above normal for this time of the year. Its october but it does not feel like it. Not even around the coastline where its usually a lot cooler. Look at san jose, and San Francisco once again in the mid 80s. 85 degrees. Oakland, 88. Napa in the 90s. Concord, 95 degrees. Those winds again look at that by about 10 00, 10 to 15 Miles Per Hour winds. I want to talk about year air quality forecast because right now the air Quality Management district is saying well deal with moderate air quality from north bay down to the south bay and depending on where you live we have some active wildfires burning and we could get some smoke and that could change. Well be noticing oh, there we go. That is the graphic that i wanted to see. Sunday night football lets talk about the game on sunday. Its at levi stadium, santa clara county, perfect weather for the football. It helps that its an evening game, so kickoff is at 5 20. Could be near that 80, upper 70 mark at the start of the game. By halftime, mid 70s. By Fourth Quarter we could even dip down below the 70 degree mark. I think the players are going to love this weather. Because they dont have to worry about playing in upper 90s heading into sunday night. Over the next seven days, more of the ocean breeze tonight and then by tomorrow, look at the temperature difference. 70s in San Francisco. Even more noticeable by monday and tuesday. 68 degrees. Inland temps will drop down into the 80s as well. Kira . I would love to be able to ask jimmy g himself if he loves the weather once the game is over. Oh, we have to tweet him. Yeah.
