President trump and former Vice President joe biden battled each other in town halls on two Different Networks on a night originally slated for a traditional president ial debate. With 19 days until election day, did those separate formats benefit americans . Reporter the president s town hall held in miami while former Vice President joe biden held his in philadelphia. Each had a distinctly different tone. In miami it was notably more contengtious. Here Savannah Guthrie asking about the president s covid diagnosis. It was only after the debate, like a period of time after the debate that i said thats interesting and they took a test and tested positive. Do you take a test every single day . No, but i take a lot of tests. Okay. And you dont know if you took a test the day of the debate . Possibly i did, possibly i didnt. In philadelphia a different tone. Here biden is talking about a National Mask mandate. You go to a governor and get them in a room and say ask people wear a mask. Everybody knows. And if they dont fine. Then i go to every governor, i go to every councilman, i go to every local official, say mandate the mask. Reporter on the issues similar questions were posed by audience members. This is the former Vice President addressing a question about the black community in america. And the answer is theres two things that ive demonstrated i care about my whole career. One is in addition to dealing with the criminal Justice System to make it fair and more decent, we have to be able to put black americans and just be able to gain wealth. Reporter President Trump praised a criminal Justice Reform bill by senator tim scott and said his precreation job numbers were a boom for the economy. A lot of people agree. I have done more for the Africanamerican Community than any president with the exception of abraham lincoln. Criminal Justice Reform. Reporter on the Supreme CourtPresident Trump avoided questions about hopes to overturn roe vs. Wade. I asked cal state east bay Political Science professor and nbc bay area political analyst larry gurston for their takes on the town halls. One of the weak spots i felt for joe biden were the opphics of him looking up to the voters whereas trump was on the same level looking eye to eye with them. Biden is the frontrunner. He can afford to be a little bit more embracing, if you will. Trump is down in the polls and hes got to find a way to get out of it. I think that explains a good deal of their approaches. Well, the pandemic a good focus of both town halls as coronavirus cases are on the rise again across the country. Tonight weve learned the number of covid cases in the u. S. Well, its not a bird or a plane, apparently its a man flying around with a jet pack. Pilots aboard a China Airline flight say thats what they saw when they got ready to land at lax. The faa is now investigating, but so far radar tapes show no jet packs or drones. Some experts say jet packs have limited fuel capacity so it couldnt have been a person, however it is not the first time theres been a sighting at lax. Six weeks ago an American Airlines flight also reported seeing a man with a jet pack. Well, the man wanted in the murder of his exgirlfriend in the south bay is dead tonight. Detectives say theres no evidence the man has extremist views, but they dont know yet why he had so many explosive devices. Okay, packing into an airplane and flying across the country is something a lot of us have avoided during the pandemic, but could you actually be safer than you think at 30,000 feet . Nbc news Kristen Dahlgren has more. Reporter tonight a new study may calm fears about flying. Researchers examine how simulated virus particles move through the aircraft both in flight and on the ground, conducting 300 tests in empty United Airline planes over 6 months. Using both masked and unmasked mannequins researchers released more than 180 million particles into the cabin. That would be equivalent to t number of particles produced by hundreds of human coughs. 99. 7 were filtered out within six minutes as fresh outside air cycled into the plane, made even cleaner by hospital grade hepa filters. In comparison researchers say it typically takes the average home 90 minutes to circulate similar particles in the air. The risk of getting coronavirus from planes is less than probably any indoor space i can think of. Reporter while the study couldnt take into account moving around the cabin, turning to talk to neighbors or eating, researchers say wearing a mask is the safest precaution. Tonight many fliers breathing a sigh of relief that the air theyre breathing on planes they be less risky than once feared. Kristen dahlgren, nbc news, new york. Today was the first day sfo passengers flying on united to hawaii could get a covid19 test. The drivethru test can be done up to 48 hours before travel. That cost 100. The rapid test costs 250 and results take about 15 minutes. A recent negative covid test is necessary to avoid the islands mandatory 14day quarantine requirements. The process here was pretty smooth. A little slow going in the morning, but i think as they progress theyll go a little quicker. Its worth noting some hawaiian cities are now pushing to have travelers take another test when they reach the island. All right, lets bring in our meteorologist jeff ranieri. Jeff, were under the dire fire conditions, so lets talk about how were going to see the changes over the next couple of days and impact to the rest of us, especially as were getting closer to the weekend. And i think were really in the clear here once we hit tomorrow afternoon. Well see those mountain gusts rapidly die down. But currently even though we dont have any wind at the lower elevations up in the mountains near about 3,000 feet we are still getting some 50 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts, and that really is the big danger overnight. We get a fire sparked and that would be able to spread really fast. If youre wondering why were still under the fire warning and other things, thats because of those high winds in the mountains up above 3,000 feet. Overnight 30 to 50 mile per hour mountain gusts, lower elevations not that bad. And the fire warning does expire at 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Let me show you that better in my wind forecast. 7 00 in the morning that red to orange color up here is the 30 to 40 mile per hour winds in the mountains tomorrow morning, and then watch how this fades as i advance the map. Youre going to be able to see things kind of shrink down here, and thats that wind starting to fade by tomorrow afternoon. Well gin here with some mostly clear skies. That northeasterly wind brings us fire danger also helps to prevent any kind of fog. Thats why well start off sunny with 60s throughout most of the bay area. The only exception is San Francisco which will begin at 59 degrees. Temperatures tomorrow dont really change a whole lot because that northerly wimbledon is so stubborn. Down here in the south bay its hot for us. 95 in morgan hill. Were looking 10 to 15 degrees above average this time of year. Keep your eyes over to oakland, 93 degrees. That heat continues for the peninsula. 90 in san mateo. Daily city, 81. San francisco, its uncomfortable. No ac, you dont want to be inside with 88 in the mission. So make sure to get outside, get some fresh air. My extended forecast drops temperatures down in San Francisco. Especially monday the sea breeze is back, some fog, down to a cool 68. And right here across the inland valleys my forecast begins to drop off once we roll into sunday. It has been so hot this summer. I did a tally today, took another look at the numbers. Livermore, 15 days at 100 and hotter since june. We also had the hottest september day, up to 111 degrees. Its the hottest weather we have seen since 2017. So i am so ready to get some rainfall in here. We might get some by about the second week of november, so anything but what weve dealt with that would be an improvement, right . Hopefully, yes. Thats coming up in a few weeks so fingers crossed for that rainfall. Thanks, jeff. Up next, booked solid. A San Francisco institution officially reopens its doors. A surprise waiting for guests this evening. And happening now you have about 35 minutes left to answer the 2020 census. Partitions are up inside and a new filtration system has been put in. In addition to good food guests were treated with a good surprise. The owner was waiting at the door to greet them. And in effect our biggest problem is i have to say no, and i hate to say no. Restaurants are not built to say no. The restaurant says its received 3,000 reservations just this week. And since its limited to only 25 capacity its booked up for several months. No travel without safety. Thats the message in a series of ad campaigns for californias tourist industry.
