The only one were worried about is north 101 at the lawrence off ramp. Still closed from the northbound side. Continue north to fair oaks and that will be your option. You have to head back and loop back up. Everything else moves very nicely. Back to you. High fire danger is back and communities across the bay area now in this waiting game to see if their power may be cut as soon as this afternoon to lower the risk. The Oakland Hills is where today in the bays Cierra Johnson is this morning. So far looks like the winds are calm. Reporter yes, good morning. It feels nice out here. No wind. Temperatures perfect. The folks here no stranger to psps. Theyre just waiting to see what happens when the shutoffs go into he can. According to pg e, a spokesperson, the shutoffs could begin as early as 6 00 p. M. And could impact as many as 33,000 customers. The Power Company and meteorologists will keep a close eye on the temperatures and the wind both two very big factors in the shutoffs. If both persist another 21,000 could see a power shutoff around 8 00 p. M. As weve been telling you for days now pg e has made it a goal to restore the outcome within 12 Daylight Hours after that event. They want to shorten the amount of time. They have made it clear they will work to restore power a little sooner. Theyve expanded their helicopter fleet. Those helicopters are used to inspect the damaged lines. Senators are questioning abortion rights, gun safety and health care. During yesterdays hearing barrett more than once cited the words of the late liberal justice she may succeed, ruth bader ginsburg, who in her confirmation hearing did not discuss how she may rule on future cases. That did not stop democrats from questioning barrett about roe v. Wade. Do you agree with Justice Scalias view that roe was wrongly decided . A followup out of gilroy, part of one neighborhood remains closed after a home explosion that left the homeowner with serious injuries. Neighbors were rocked by that blast, they tell us, which hammed on monday. The homeowner is still in the hospital. The bomb squad is looking into the possibility there might be more devices still in the home so neighbors are sheltering in place and say the earth shook there. Gilroy police notified the joint Terrorism Task force but it is not clear if the homeowner has any ties to terror. New research out of stanford concludes that america is nowhere close to herd immunity. The massive antibody samples from thousands of patients on dialysis across 46 states. It finds slightly less than 10 of the u. S. Has been infected. Herd immunity will happen when about twothirds of the population has antibodies. Keep in mind our normal High Temperature is about 75. Were way above that. I dont think well set any records but we have the high winds that will be setting up especially for our hills and that means that any fires could spread quickly. Well talk more about that coming up. I wanted to talk about the red flag warning and what that means because we throw the term out there very often and so its issued 12 to 24 hours in advance when we have very dry air coming in as well as some frequent wind gusts at 25 Miles Per Hour or higher. Here is a look at the relative humidity that were expecting for today. As we go through the forecast, here we are at 4 00 in the afternoon and it shows that the air will be critically dry in napa. Take a look at that. 8 relative humidity at 4 00 today and were seeing relative humidity numbers in concord, livermore. Still below that 15 criteria. We are going to see that especially in some of our hills usually during the overnight hours the humidity comes up. But. As we go through the day well see our temperatures heating up very quickly. Here we are at lunch time and were already at 86 degrees in concord. 80 in san jose and San Francisco will also be in the low 80s. Then well see some of these temperatures reaching into the 90s today and so its going to be very hot. When you throw in that along with the high winds and the low humidity that really makes those conditions ripe for any fires that do develop to spread rapidly. We have High Pressure overhead. Thats pushing this air down and also causing it to warm up. But once that moves out well have a chance to cool off next week and we do still see a storm track for the pacific northwest. We are going to be hot and dry the next few days leading into the weekend. But next week is looking so much better. We just need to make itth next very careful lets head over to you, mike. How is it looking for the commute . Its looking good, kari. Right now i want to point out the map behind me, the south bay 101, that crash cleared from lawrence. The Silicon Valley map, no problems again as youre traveling northbound. Thats what was going on, the car went off into a ditch. The rest of the roadways, 101 clear to or from San Francisco and throughout the north bay. The east bay, we only have one issue and thats on the grid. It is the oakland construction northbound 880 does show a little bit of slowing around 29th. The bay bridge itself moves very smoothly both directions and there are no metering lights, no backups. High fire danger. Another red flag warning just went into effect 30 minutes ago and we are tracking high winds, hot temperatures and possible planned power outages. We have Team Coverage up next. Weve been talking about the red flag warning including much of the north bay including some of the valleys but for the rest of the bay area its mostly the hills from the diablo range over toward the santa cruz mountains. Our wind at times in upper elevations gusting possibly over 50 Miles Per Hour and we combine that with low humidity and hot temperatures. Its going to be high concern as we reach up to 95 in parts of the east bay and north bay. Well talk more about this coming up. Mike right now has an update on the commute. Yeah, kari. Im still watching for any more slowing. I saw a couple blips where its circled on the map. The northbound side still has a crew thats registered there. Its been green the last 20 minutes. Westbound highway 4 also green after the earlier traffic break. I think that crash has cleared and no delays, though, out of antioch. The early commute hasnt been a problem and neither is the rest of the commute right now. Back to you. And a live look across the bay area right now as kari was just telling us that high fire danger is back and not just in one region. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson joins us live this morning in piedmont. The Oakland Hills may be one place on the verge of having power shutoffs. Reporter good morning. If you were one of those individuals at risk of having a power shutoff you would have gotten those notifications with email or text message yesterday, but the folks here in Oakland Hills no stranger to the psps shutoffs and now its just a waiting game for later today when they are supposed to go into effect. Shutoffs are supposed to begin around 6 00 p. M. It could impact as many as 33,000 customers throughout the state but here in alameda, solano and napa counties. Those temperatures, the humidity and the wind are factors in the shutoff. Another 21,000 could see shutoffs around 8 00. Two waves there. We spoke to some folks at risk for their power shutoff and hear what they had to say. I stick as much as i can in the freezer and do all i can. Reporter if you are at risk you would know so you could preserve some of your food and charging your phones and your other devices. But pg e has made it clear they will work to keep the shutoffs as short as possible, bring the power up when it is safe to do so. Theyve expanded their helicopter fleet so theyre able to check the deenergized lines for damage that is crucial in preventing any more fires in the situation. Cierra johnson for today in the bay. All right, good info there. Thanks, cierra. It is 5 33. In the next half hour judge Amy Coney Barretts Supreme Court confirmation hearing resumes. A live look at the u. S. Capitol right now where inside shell face more tough questions from senators. Yesterdays hearing went for more than 12 hours and democratic lawmakers are finding it tough to get the answers they want. Barrett spent much of yesterday promising the constitution will guide her decisions. California senator harris said she would question her on the aca. Judge barrett says she has not been influenced by President Trump. Im not here on a mission to destroy the Affordable Care act. People are scared of what will happen if the Affordable Care act is destroyed in the middle of a pandemic. Yesterday democrats saying some of their sharpest questions at her public opposition of abortion rights. A final senate vote could come within two weeks. A followup on the toppling of that father Junipero Serra statue outside Mission San Rafael in the north bay. That is all thats left. You can see the base of the statue defaced with graffiti. Activists tore it down on monday night. Catholic leaders organized another demonstration outside the mission. A Mission Pastor offered what he called a message of forgiveness for the protesters. We looked upon people that need to be loved. Opponents argued Junipero Serra was a figure head in the Mission Systems early efforts to oppress indigenous people. Mission san rafael was the coast miwok tribe. They cited six people in the toppling and they could face felony vandalism charges. A live look in san jose. One city in the bay areas largest county seeing major changes today. They enter the orange tier. Today in the bays bob redell reporter it could be. Restaurants here in palo alto and throughout Santa Clara County can now allow more people inside their establishments. The county has moved into the orange tier of reopening, which means restaurants can now operate at 25 capacity. Now the state is allowing 50 capaci capacity. Here is the owner of jack holders restaurant in san jose. Hes concerned that operating at just 25 capacity wont be enough to save businesses that are struggling. 25 for restaurants is not enough to make a living. Its really important limitation that weve put in place to help try to reduce the density, to help try to reduce risk for the community, and we will be out there with our Enforcement Teams ensuring that theres compliance. Reporter Santa Clara County is slowly loosening restrictions on other indoor operations as well including Church Services and movie theaters both now allowed at 25 capacity but no more than 100 people inside. Just across the street from us the stanford Cardinals Football Team will be allowed back on campus to practice starting today. This is video from last week when the team practiced at wood side high in san mateo. Stanford is scheduled to play the first game on november 7th in oregon. The first home game the following week. Like Santa Clara County Alameda County has moved into the orange tier of reopening. That county wont make any major changes not until october 26th when they will open at 25 capacity or 100 people, which ever is fewer, indoor malls will be able to open at 50 capacity. This years california edition of the Michelin Guide has announced it will not award its coveted stars or other usual honors. The director says the decision follows feedback from top chefs. He wants the industry to get back on its feet. Helping santa rosa firestorm victims make it in the bay. Funding approved to start rebuilding Affordable Housing destroyed in the 2017 tubbs fire. Santa rosa reached an agreement to use nearly 40 million to create new homes. The fire destroyed more than 5,000 structures in sonoma and napa counties. More than half of them were in the city of santa rosa itself. And now here we are talking about more fire danger as we look to the middle and end of the week, kari. Yeah, we know this red flag warning can understandably rattle a lot of nerves and were going to be here for you with all the information that we can get in passing it along to you. Lets get to the south bay with a live look outside in san jose. Its a clear start this week and our temperatures are in the low 60s. Those early hours will be the best time to get outside before it heats up. Were already at 84 degrees this afternoon and then well see our temperatures reaching into the upper 80s in the south bay, mid90s inland as well as 95 today in napa. Im circling at the bottom of our screen, that traditional slowing just showed up in the last two minutes. North 101 and 680 up to oakland road in to san jose. 101 approaching 85 a crash off the roadway. No injuries reported there. But notice the 152 sign there in the lower right that slowing a crash just cleared coming into our area. Better news heading into gilroy. A live look at the bay bridge. New this morning the Governors Office is out with a new report urging more restraint by Police Officers. That report the result of a special panel convened in the wake of the death of george floyd and the protests that followed more than three months ago. The report contains more than 3 dozen recommendations which include better communication and warning tactical weapons against crowd can escalate the violence that is meant to deter. Californias Largest Police unions are calling the recommendations unrealistic. To decision 2020. 20 days until the official election day. The Justice Department sued Stephanie Winston wolkoff claiming she broke a nondisclosure agreement by writing her book called melania and me the rise and fall of my friendship with the first lady. The lawsuit says the nda signed had no end date and she never gave a draft to the first lady. Wolkoff, who recently released a candid recording of the first lady, refutes the claim. If the Justice Department wins the suit all proceeds from the book will go to a government trust.
