Put the diamond in the sun today, kari and blingbling all around. Yeah, were going to get a lot of sunshine today. Lets talk about things im watching in the forecast. We are still dealing with a lot of smoke in the area near the glass fire in the north bay so the smoke will continue today creating unhealthy air quality in the north bay. Were on a trend with cooler temperatures and that will continue throughout the week. Im also watching two storm systems that could bring us some weekend rain and it all depends on the track of those systems. But then as we take a look at our air quality for today once again its an issue for the north bay as well as inland parts of the east bay. Elsewhere we have seen some improvements and all of the green dots show you that we will still have some good air quality the next several days. So here is a look at those two systems. Doesnt really look like a whole lot out in the pacific. You can see the clusters and the clouds and weakening remnants of a hurricane that is now continuing to move closer and getting drawn in by an area of low pressure. As it does so it can enhance the amount of rain we could see with those systems and there will be several more moving across the Pacific Northwest going into the weekend and early next week. Some of our more robust computer models are showing the possibility of getting about a quarter to half inch of rain. Really good news but its shifting in a little bit further to the north. So im concerned about that, if that trend continues. We may miss out on some of those showers as it moves into far northern california. But thats something well be watching the next few days as our temperatures still once again will be cooling off. Were going from 90 today to the mid80s tomorrow. Upper 70s for some of our warmest spots inland. By the end of the weekend, the weekend is looking cool and breezy with more clouds than a chance of showers. Well be watching out for the chance of a shower in San Francisco as well with highs in the mid60s. How is the commute now rolling, mike . Kari, i had a big question mark about a big slowdown on the san mateo bridge. Ive been tracking it and well watch to see if it develops and it did. Look at the taillights jammed up from where our camera is just past the toll plaza west all the way across the flat section. Now the map shows you, again, this is the san mateo bridge westbound heading to the peninsula. The dumbarton bridge to the south. Thats highway 84. Great option for you. Now ive been scanning all the reports, checking twitter trying to find other social media shouts out to the bridge and whats going on. Theres no scheduled construction from what i can see. No incidents reported by chp. A smooth drive but you have your backup, of course, to the bay bridge toll plaza. No issues getting there but there is a crash in concord. Im also tracking south 680 and circling over near main street. Back to you. All right. Thank you, mike. Up next on today in the bay, nbc bay areaa reresponds. After a few more weeks david got his refund, 1,040. 56. We asked carnival and the agent what happened. The agency didnt get back to us but carnival did. It said refunds were delayed early in the pandemic but its caught up now. A spokesperson added we certainly appreciate our guests patience in an unprecedented interruption to our business. Kudos to carnival for stepping up. As for the travel agent, let me say this. Weve heard from lots of folks whose refunds have gotten hung up with various travel agencies. Some people faced unexpected fees. So if you decide to book through a travel agent, first ask them how they handled changes, cancellations, and refunds, and insist on seeing a list of possible fees up front. You can contact us like david did. Tap the responds option at nbcbayarea. Com or call us 888996tips. Thanks, chris. Straight ahead the time line for reopening. And thousands of evacuees returning home in the glass fire zone. Next, a live report on whats keeping many away as today in the bay continues right now. A very good Tuesday Morning to you. Thanks so much for joining us. Im laura garcia. And im marcus washington. Mike keeping an eye on that commute. Well get to that in a bit. Meteorologist kari hall keeping track of the forecast. Kari, it will be a nice one for us. Yeah, we do have a clear start this morning. Not as much fog as yesterday morning but were still on the cooling trend for the bay area. So as we check out walnut creek and our temperatures for this morning expect it to be at about 57 degrees in the next hour. We may get to 69 degrees at 10 00. At lunch time it is 79 degrees. Its going to be nice but there will still be some drifts of smoke and temperatures heating up today reaching up to 90 in antioch while Half Moon Bay will only see a high of 62. Well talk more about this and the possibility of some weekend rains coming up. Mike, how is it looking for the commute . Kari, ive been following this issue on the san mateo bridge. I think i found the source and a look at the san mateo bridge camera just at the end of the flat section, one of the cameras picked up a disabled rig over on the right shoulder, maybe blocking the slowing. Distracting folks narrowing down to two lanes at the high rise. The map shows you youre backed up on westbound 92. A lot of folks are already doing this but heading south down to the dumbarton bridge will get you past the san mateo bridge and thats whats causing more slowing in through hayward and union city for the 880 interchange there. Thats the Ripple Effect in the east bay that may send more folks to the bay bridge. Well check the toll plaza coming up. Back to you. Thank you, mike. A live look for you that morning at the white house where President Trump is now isolating. He went back to the president ial residence after being treated for covid19 at walter reed. This is video of the president walking up the steps to the white house. He then takes off his mask to address the American Public in a video tweet. Meanwhile democratic candidate joe biden is slamming the president s response to the coronavirus. Our scott mcgrew will have more of that coming up in about 15 minutes. Were also learning that a prominent Southern California pastor has announced that he has tested positive for covid19. After attending a september event in the rose garden. Pastor greg laurie is the head of Harvest Christian Fellowship in riverside and attend add prayer march in washington, d. C. , with Vice President mike pence. He also attended the rose garden ceremony announcing President Trumps Supreme Court nominee. Multiple people within the president s inner circle who attended the rose garden indoor outdoor event have tested positive for covid. Press secretary Kayleigh Mcenany and the two top assistants joining the list of several highlevel staffers also testing positive. Now to the south bay, live pictures from downtown san jose, and there is good news. Santa clara county getting ready to allow businesses to resume indoor operations. But when that will happen really still not set in stone just yet. Today in the bays kris sanchez is live for us with that possible time line this morning. Kris . Okay, well get to kris here we go. Reporter that could change as early as next week. And that news was as well received as a free dessert last night with some pretty large restaurants having to accommodate a fraction of the crowds theyre used to under tents outside. Santa clara county and San Francisco held the line a month longer than the state required but now may be ready to move forward. Here is what has to happen. New covid cases have to hold steady and the Positivity Rate must remain lower than 5 . If that happens restaurants could serve 25 of their indoor capacity or 100 people, whichever is lower, and the county could allow gatherings outside up to 200 people. Restaurants say theyre ready even if some diners say theyre not quite ready yet. And it really means a lot for us, too. We get to bring back more Staff Members for protective reasons as well even though theyre still taking precautions inside. It feels more safe for me to be outside. Reporter if you have kids you might wonder what that change could mean for halloween. At this point the county considers it a highrisk activity and is encouraging people to celebrate at home or put out treats for people to take in order to minimize contact. While Santa Clara County and San Francisco and other bay area counties are starting to move forward Sonoma County finds itself in a terrible distinction category, the fifth in the state. It is the top five in terms of transmission of covid19. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Thanks so much, kris. 6 35. Now to the glass fire in the north bay. Thousands of evacuees are back home and businesses are starting to reopen. Lets check in with today in the bays Cierra Johnson back in calistoga. Youve been up there covering this fire so extensively. Are you seeing a return to normalcy . Reporter we were out here for four days, i believe, last week. On the way in during those days you could see the ash falling from the sky. I could smell the ash. I noticed a lot of the delivery trucks were back on the road. Thats something i hadnt seen in my journeys at all. Something else we noticed here, businesses are reopening in calistoga, one of them being a silverado in the main stretch of town, that things are getting back to normal. When the folks do return things are going to look a little different because there has been a lot of devastation from those fires. We know of at least eight wineries that were destroyed or sustained significant damage including the famous castle but kari did mention we are expecting rain later this week which in any other situation would be frowned upon. Folks here pretty excited about that rain because it could aid in increasing that containment of the fire. Cal fire says its at more than 40 contained so some good news there. The folks here in napa making that return. Its a bit of relief following a week of uncertainty. Take a listen to what one person has to say about coming back. Its a relief, i guess. Being back in town is really great. Definitely a blessing. Reporter so its great to be home for a lot of folks but it is important to still be aware of your surroundings. That fire only at 41 . Theres still a lot of fires to fight and a lot of residual damage. Cal fire spoke with us yesterday and mentioned be aware of tree limbs and bases may not be as strong and theres a risk. Check everything, make sure everything is working all right and be aware of your surroundings. Live in calistoga, Cierra Johnson for today in the bay. Good advice. Well have to support those businesses when we can. Right now 6 38 Tuesday Morning. Kari has a look at our forecast. Pretty mild week ahead. Yeah, we are going to see much cooler air, very favorable weather conditions for more containment of the glass fire, but it is still burning as cierra mentioned so we are still seeing drifts of smoke coming through the north bay and then some of it moves into the inland east bay. Weve seen improvements in our air quality along the coast as well as the south bay where temperatures this afternoon will reach into the low 80s. Up to 92 for antioch today. 90 in concord and in napa today expect a high of 86 degrees. Were in the mid70s in oakland and some upper 60s in San Francisco. Well talk about those weekend rain chances coming up in a few minutes. Mike has an update on whats happening for that morning commute. Once again, kari, its whats not happening, the drivers are not moving smoothly west 92 is the route to avoid if youre heading to the peninsula from the east bay. Will use the dumbarton bridge instead of this. The Speed Sensors reflect why. Now substation five is basically at the end of the flat section, thats where the rig blocks one lane. I see from one of their surveillance cameras that a second rig has arrived. Hopefully that can clear from west 92. Take the dumbarton bridge as your alternate. Anywhere south is fine. To the north thats crowded. We may see more traffic. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Up next, why some Supreme Court justices are talking about the ruling that legalized gay marriage. The details next. Plus the very latest from the white house as well with the president s health and the campaign. To the big board this morning, the dow up mildly. We are waiting for the fed chairman to speak, and then well probably see some action. Plus are you ready to do the workout . Yes remember the jane fonda workouts in the 80s . Shes back with a new workout video but this time its about more than fitness. Well show it to you when we come back. Youre watching today in the bay. In the bay area, we believe in science. Traffic and air pollution will be even worse after the pandemic. Thats why we support measure rr to keep caltrain running. Which is at risk of shutdown because of the crisis. To keep millions of cars off our roads, to reduce air pollution and fight climate change. And measure rr helps essential workers like me get to work and keep our communities healthy. Relieve traffic. Reduce pollution. Rescue caltrain. [all] yes on measure rr. To wear a mask out in public around other people. Sure itll keep you healthy. But more importantly, i wont have to see your happy smiling face. Ugh. And if you dont want to wear a mask, ive just got one thing to tell you. Scram, go away. Ugh. Caring for each other because we are all in this together. So wear a mask and have a rotten day, will ya . Ugh. At 6 43 lets head over to livermore as we start out with Cool Temperatures this morning but then it will warm up for another hot afternoon with sunshine and at times some drifts of smoke. Well continue to see improvements throughout the end of the week. Well talk about that and rain chances coming up in the forecast. And do you use the san mateo bridge . If youre going west dont use it right now. You are getting the warning because this is whats going on or not going on. The map shows you why you use the dumbarton bridge. 880 slows southbound. That ripple is taking effect slowing heading down to fremont and newark on the nimitz as well. Thanks, mike. Its 6 43. To decision 2020 as weve been telling you President Trump has returned to the white house. Now, scott mcgrew, he will have to isolate there as he recovers from covid19. Thats certainly what hes supposed to do. Certainly has to is relative when youre talking about the president of the united states. After all, he did take the car trip he was criticized by many doctors for as nobody was wearing the entire ppe that they should have been. President trump left walter reed yesterday and then instead of going in the normal door of the white house he went up the outside steps. No doubt to show that he was feeling much better. Took off his mask and that had some people noting that. He was entirely alone when he did it. Later he posted a video urging americans not to be afraid of coronavirus. And i know theres a risk. Theres a danger, but thats okay. And now im better and maybe im immune. I dont know. But dont let it dominate your lives. Get out there. Be careful. We have the best medicines in the world. Theres a lot to be concerned about. 210,000 people have died. Its a big concern. I hope no one thinks its not a problem. Its a serious problem. I dont have mondays numbers but 1,860 died over the week. 887 on friday. 976 the day before. 937 the day before that. Now the president speculates he might be immune. We know hes not because he literally has coronavirus. Contracting a disease is the exact opposite of what the word immune means. Now he was diagnosed on thursday, so hes on day four or five depending on how you count it. Doctors with experience with coronavirus say the danger zone comes around day seven. Former republican candidate for president herman kaine died four weeks after his initial diagnosis. Kaine was 74 when he died. Thats the same age as President Trump, but kaine was also in remission for cancer. You saw the sound bite with joe biden. That came from a town hall he did with lester holt of nbc. Biden in that town hall said he regretted calling the president a clown at the debate. You notice not one single time that i can recall that he offered a substantive answer or criticism related to a policy matter. It was all invective, all personal, all things that have nothing to do with whether you change these peoples lives for the better. I did get very frustrated. I did get frustrated. And i should have said the clownish undertaking instead of calling him a clown. The Federal Reserve chairman will be speaking today about the economy. Ill be tweeting about that. You can find me on twitter. I am scottmcgrew. All right, scott, thank you. Well, it is official. Supreme Court Nominee Amy Coney Barretts confirmation hearing starts monday. Members of the Senate Judiciary committee will appear remotely due to the pandemic. The Supreme Court is not going to hear the case of a kentucky clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses for samesex couples. You might remember kim davis. Show said her religious beliefs kept her from recognizing samesex marriages. She was briefly jailed and sued by two samesex couples. Conservative justices clarence and alito agreed with the Supreme Courts decision to not accept davis appeal but still wrote about their objections to the Supreme Court case that legalized samesex marriages. Thomas wrote the ruling enabled courts and governments to ban religious people who believe marriage is between one man and one woman as bigots. Now to oakland and a live look for you at Oakland International airport this morning. Happening today covid19 testing begins there. Thats right. Yeah, we have much more comfortable temperatures and better air quality for much of the bay area. Expect those highs today to reach into the low 90s for some of our warmest spots in the inland east bay. Were up to 82 in san jose. 79 in palo alto with some low 80s in parts of the north bay. Thats where we also have more smoke coming in. Unhealthy air quality in the area near the glass fire and then for the inland east bay were also seeing some of the drifts of smoke coming in but green, meaning good, for the rest of the bay area. Im also watching a couple more systems coming in that could also continue to improve our air quality and possibly help with getting more containment on the fires to the north. We have a weakening tropical system that will possibly get drawn into this area of low pressure that moves in on friday and then theres another one right behind that that could bring in additional rain for saturday. Those two systems working together may bring us rain. Were watching the exact track of them and this system. This is hurricane delta. It will be moving into gulf of mexico and a category 4 before weakening as it moves closer to louisiana over the next few days. Looking at scattered showers but much cooler air. Our highs reaching into the low 70s end of the week. We gradually start to warm up. Nice to see cooler air, higher humidity. Highs here in the 60s. Youve been watching the commute. Where is it slowing down . Kari, lets show you where its slowing down. Its not a beautiful shot but is a surveillance camera. Were taking a look at this disabled big rig and another rig that looks like its pulled over there as well. Theres some flares behind and thats blocking the lane. The right lane westbound 92 mid span on the san mateo bridge. Sensors jammed all the way back and youll notice on the right side slowing 880 heading down to the dumbarton bridge which is your alternate to avoid highway 92 the bay bridge toll plaza is not seeing more traffic. Its seeing lighter traffic flow. The metering lights are still on but the bay bridge is getting lighter right now. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Back live now to the white house this morning. President trump is now isolating. We will be following the president s condition and the backlash hes receiving for going back home. More live coverage coming up on the today show just a few minutes away. Back here in the bay area i want to check in with today in the bays kris sanchez this morning live in san jose with some good news. Santa clara county is getting ready to allow some businesses to resume their indoor operations amid the pandemic, kris. Reporter hi there, laura. In order for the dining room doors to reopen, the infection rates here in Santa Clara County have to hold steady. Fewer than four cases per 100,000 people and the Positivity Rate less than 5 . If that happens restaurants could have 25 of capacity or 100 people, whichever is lower, and will allow outdoor gatherings up to 200 people. Restaurant managers say when they can open up they can bring back some staff but theres still room for people not ready to eat inside. So whoever is comfortable being inside. We still have room outside. Reporter so while theres good news in Santa Clara County there is bad news. Sonoma county is now in the top five counties in terms of transmission. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Kris, thank you. To the north bay calistoga and today in the bays Cierra Johnson where things are looking up for residents returning home. Reporter folks are making their way back and with that businesses are reopening. One of those businesses the first to reopen is the silverado pharmacy here in the town of calistoga. Now when folks do come back they will still see some devastation like one of the wineries that was damaged, but some good news we can expect a little bit of rain. There are two chances of rain so that will help in the firefight. Right now cal fire is saying that fire is at 41 containment so were on the upswing here in calistoga but when folks come back they still need to be cautious that there is still fire in the area. Be aware if theres any downed lines or any trees that could have been damaged. Be careful when you make it back home. Live in calistoga, Cierra Johnson for today in the bay. Thanks so much, cierra.
