Moore needs to tell the world. What cautioned birds to change their tune . Soledad im soledad obrien. Welcome to matter of fact. You probably know about the battle in South Carolina between republican congressman Lindsey Graham and his democrat challenger jamie harrison. According to recent polls harrison who was once considered a long shot is in a dead heat with grateful but theres another fight in South Carolina a turf war. A battle for land and legacy. In a few days hundreds of properties in one county will be auctioned off. Dozens of those properies belong to the gullah geechee people descendants of slaves that still live on the lands. Most of it was bought by or given to free slaves after the civil war and was passed down for generations. As Jessica Gomez tells us during the middle of a pandemic the tax sale should be delayed. Along the showers of st. Helena and surrounding the marshes are whispers of the past. The stories of those to who have lived here for generations. My grandmother loved trees. Cynthia welch trying to keep her grandmothers yard and legacy alive. Maridown was the granddaughter of freed slaves who bought their home in the late 1800s. They worked hard to own this land to get on her dying breath she begged us please dont sell it. Welch, who was furloughed from her job at a hotel because of covid19 couldnt catch up on past due property taxes and was notified this summer her home would go to auction. I was living in fear every day. That this house could be taken. She is one of hundreds delinquent whrapbd offers r owners whose property is scheduled to go to the annual tax sell. After the kwraubgs that Property Owner has one year to pay back the highest bidder with interest. If they cant afford it they lose the property. Under mounting pressure to delay the auction until next spring county prosecution maria wall says unless state law is changed the county would be forced to collect there and next years taxes as well. That delay of the tax sale comes in some cases at a very steep cost to the Property Owner. We met teresa white ahead of the non profprofit at the histo penn center. It was one of the first schools for freed west african slaves. The gullah geechee went on to own were were the coastal land in beaufort county. Some were them are landing on land their families have owned since the 1806s. They have never lived any where else. An effort now to keep and that in the hands of the gullah people while retaining much of their cultural they are losing their property. Were of it passed down from generation to generation often with no legal deed and making it complicate and costly for heirs to develop and, vulnerable to outside investors. Next thing you know theres a big fabulous resort a subdivisi subdivision, a gate around it. Just to south on Hilton Head Island once mostly gullah a stark contrast to gullah neighborhoods. For many here the property taxes have become unaffordable. The pandemic making things worse. Gullah is an opportunity for us to have food for the soul. Hilton head Restaurant OwnerTim Singleton is back in business after shutting his doors three months. Once donating to help save other gullah land he is now the one delinquent on two other properties. Now i have a taste whatever people go through whether the stress and anxiety of losing your home or property. The conversation we are having about the property taxes. Tom davis represents were of beaufort county. Late last month he authored a bill that was passed in the state large giving those whose property were auctioned last year a 12 month extension to save them. The idea is give the families time to recover from what covid19 may have inflicted in term of economic status. Why the decision not to delay the october 2020. You have county and local governments that depend on tax revenue us and that would be extraordina extraordinarily disruptive. Im delighted to present you there check. Leaving teresa white scrape willing together donations to save as much land as they can. Im just ecstatic right now because i was worried so were that i was getting sick because i didnt know how i would pay for there. I always say theres always an angel somewhere. Cynthia welch receivering the same relief with just days to go. Saving her grandmothers legacy for now. I think shy is telling me what good job. You kept the house. Good job. In beaufort county, South Carolina, for matter of fact im Jessica Gomez. Soledad the tax sale moves forward monday. There are gro to cap property taxes on hick gullah geechee land. Senator davis says that is something he is going to look into when the life session resumes january. Next on matter of fact. I got covid, my father got k0e6rd. My mother. We have reached a grim milestone in the covid19 pandemic. It has killed more than a Million People worldwide. We wanted to look at the people behind the deaths and how one life lost touches so many other lives. Come through here. Im im currently a cleaner. You see a lot of africanamerican and hispanics doing maintenance. We have to rick ourselves so others feel comfortable. I got covid, my father got covid. My mother also got covid. My brother got covid and other sister. Six people in the family. My father was in the hospital for like almost three weeks and he passed away april 16. I lost everything. I lost the breadwinner for my family and my protector. I lost a big part of me. He made sure my kids were ok. He was my babysitter. He was everything to me. I think people have to learn that you dont take life for granted. In my Community People have lost jobs. My brother is laid off. In the United States this is the richest country but then once again it is the you highest in coronavirus deaths. We need more guidance aou through correct information. We have to wear masks and protect ourselves in order to protect the people we love. Soledad how are you doing . According to a recent kaiser study nearly half of all American Adults say covid19 is effecting their Mental Health trfrplt anxiety to eurtdability to feelings of hopelessness. While stresses are new many with chronic Mental Health challenges have been without their normal network of sup emerging Mental Health crisis with dr. Vaile wright senior director for Healthcare Innovation with the American Psychological association. Soledad dr. Vaile wright nice to talk to you. A couple of data points 50 of parents who were told between one and 10 your stress level they said they are between eight and 10. These are people with kids. Another survey found that 70 of people say the governments response to coronavirus is actually causing them stress. These numbers are quite high. Are you surprised . Honestly, we were shocked. We picked that parent with kids under 18 were experiencing a brunt of stress but we didnt realize just how severe it was. What was really interesting was that it was both fathers and mothers. When you think about the state pit was not just democrats or l. Republicans. It was across the spectrum. Everyone is concerned about how the federal response is impacting how we handle covid. Soledad how is that stress that you are talking about maybe not just stress in parents but people across the board, how is it manifesting itself is it people often report headaches, muscle tension, stomach problems, fatigue, along with irritability and frustration, maybe losing their temper, having a hard time sleeping or eating too much. It is our bodys way of responding to stressful and while it is totally normal we need to make sure wire managing it so it is north serious. Soledad what do you recommend for people who are struggling . We recommend that you focus on the things that are inside your control and that is your thoughts, feelings and behavior. Particularly the foundational four which is making sure you are eating healthy, getting adequate sleep, staying active and really maintaining social connection. That is often virtual right now because of our situation but it is critical because we know that is a huge reducer of stress. To do those four you have to have a routine. Routines bring structure and stability and they help us be more effective at what we are doing. Soledad how are you advising parents on how to see the signs of struggle in their kids . I dont think it is often younger adults and children dont have the sail coping reserves that adults have and they rely on you structure and routine to feel safe and skaourpbd they have lost that so it is important we talk to our children, ask them questions, be honest and open and be appropriate with them and model calm coping behavior. Because they pick up on our anxiety and our stress quickly. Soledad the george floyd case which obviously is not part of coronavirus but has layered on top of the whole coronavirus window we are in. Has brought incredible stress to very specific communities. For people of color are you seeing in your data increased stress from that combined with coronavirus . We are certainly seeing people particularly individuals who are in communities of color reporting significant amounts of stress about Racial Injustice and coronavirus. They are reporting higher stress related to being able to get healthcare resources, bake day to day things like food and a high amount of fear of getting the virus and their family getting the virus. Eurbsoledad thank you for your time. How do astronauts vote from space . First, good people can be biased. Would you take a test to measure your bias blind soledad at matter of fact we have never shied from tough conversations and with the Americas Division so apparent we are expanding a bit to have Difficult Conversations about race and social justice. We are launching a series of live streamed Digital Events called matter of fact listening tour. It will explore issues more deeply and introduce you to new voice and ideas and approaches. He is a best selling author and combat veteran and social entrepreneur. I spoke to him. Soledad nice to see you. Good to see you. Soledad you are of your famous book was the other wes moore and it was about you but not about you. It was another guy named wes floor but it was a look at access and opportunity. Tell me about that book. That book started where the day after i had received the raudz scholarship the Baltimore Sun was writing an article about my life and skwraoeurpbd how this local kid will challenges anded was getting a zip and at the same time they were writing a series of articles about four guys who walked into a Jewelry Store in a Armed Robbery pwofrpld an offduty Police Officer was killed and one person they were looking for was captured and tried and convicted was also wes moore. We were from the same areas and around the same age and both grew up in single parent households and had academc and disciplinary troubles coming up. The more i got to know him the more we became friends and more i realized how quick as a society we are so fast to congratulate or castigate. Without ever really being able to understand dynamics and pathways an journeys and opportunities and we become products of our expectations. Soledad today you serve as the c. E. O. Of robin hood and you are focused a lot on poverty and ending poverty. Explain to everyone how race intersects with poverty. Race is the most predictive indicator for life outcomes everything from income and wealth to Educational Attainment to practice alternatively mortality. The fact that we have a 101 racial wealth gap in this country is not because one family worked 10 times harder. The facility that right now a true statistic a white person recently released from prison has a better chance of getting an entry level job than a black person without any type of critical involvement so when we talk about the correlation between race an poverty and people say it is not race it is poverty. You cant separate them. If you look at not just the lift that we have to contend with but the still baked in infrastructure that we have to try to overcome. Soledad wes moore, so nice to see you. If you are wondering how to get ready for the listening tour here is what we would like you to do. Go to the project implicit web site, implicit. Harvard. Edu. Take the implicit Bias Association test. We talk about the test on the show and explain why all of us have blind spots when it comes to race. The learning tour the hard truth about bias will live stream on matter tv october 8. How do you vote when you are 200 miles above earth . Soledad welcome back. Have you figured out how you are voting, absentee, in person. Four americans plan to cast a ballot while in orbit. They are astronauts obviously and pending no launch delays they will arrive at the space station between october 14 and halloween just before the election. According to nasa it is a pretty straightforward process by email. Before flying they fill out a federal postcard application which is the same form that members of the military use for absentee voting while deemployment. Mission control emails them ballots on election day and they complete the ballot and email it back to tphrars which sends it to the various county clerks offices. Nasa has allowed voting from space since 1997. Still ahead. Pitch perfect. Songs. Really. She wanted a roommate to help with the cooking. But she wanted someone who loves cats. So, we got griswalda. That was not your imagination. Researchers studied sparrows in San Francisco in april and may and heard this. Pretty cool, right. During the shutdown the birds sang more softly and faster and lower pitch compared to recordings from 2015. On though they were quieter the songs traveled twice the distance because they didnt have to compete with humans.
