Kari, youd better take it away. Take it far away. All right, as we look at whats happening here close to home we are seeing those fires burning in parts of the north bay. Im watching the weather conditions here because that plays a huge role in where we see the fires going as well as how fast theyre moving as we look at the glass fire and the weather conditions for today. Take a look at how nice and cool it is this morning. Upper 50s and we do have high humidity, a calm wind but its going to heat up again today and that, of course, will be of high concern. But cal fire posted this yesterday showing how many acres have burned and this year were just breaking all kinds of records. We have nearly 3. 8 million acres burned just this year. And on a normal year the fiveyear average is about 739,000 acres burned. Its really been a very bad season for us. We still are seeing these fires burning and the high fire danger continuing. So more smoke in the air as we look at our fiveday air quality forecast. Even as we go towards the end of the week improving slightly for the weekend as a new storm system approaches farther off to the north. We are going to get more of a breezy wind and thats going to increase our fire danger. As we look at these areas shaded in orange, a fire weather watch from thursday into friday afternoon. For the weekend we have some upper 80s so it does cool down a little bit for some of our warmest spots. But we are also watching that fire danger and the heat advisory before this week is up. And, mike, youre watching the roads. How is it looking for the commute . We have a backup. Well show that to you. The metering lights were turned on just before 6 00 in the morning. Your build off the maze. Its a smooth drive. Well keep it that way. We do have one issue. Highway 37 and, of course, the fire zone for the glass fire up there. We are looking to the south on the nimitz where we still have one lane blocked by a crash. More extra slowing through hayward. Thats minor. No more slowing and that morning rush cleared by 6 15. 6 21 right now. The rest of the bay moves smoothly. The volume builds across the westbound bridges. Back to you. Im laura garcia. And im marcus washington. Mike is keeping an eye on the commute. First meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast. The forecast really plays a role as firefighters try to battle it. Weve had some nice Cool Temperatures during the early hours, a calm wind and higher humidity. Those fires do continue to burn and so were still looking at smoke moving across the bay area making the air quality unhealthy especially in the north bay and inland parts of the east bay. You do want to limit your time out there and were going to have another day of some hot temperatures as we take it hour by hour starting out comfortable but already by noon were seeing some of our valley temperatures in the upper 80s and along the peninsula were mostly in the mid70s. Well take a closer look at this coming up. Mike, how is it looking for the morning commute . Its looking pretty grim around the bay. The bay bridge metering lights were turned on just before 6 00. All lanes there are filled in. You see green for everyone else. We zoom in to hayward and have a crash blocking one lane of southbound 880. Mild slowing there a lot lighter than before. Ive also circled the san mateo toll plaza. Still a little slowing there and, marcus, a live look at the san mateo bridge westbound taillights are your commute even though theres more traffic flow, flowing smoothly. Theyre nicely obeying the rules laid out before them. A lot of people were calling for that last night. The morning after the first president ial debate and those reviews not kind. Many on both sides of the aisle say it was low on substance and the 90 minutes was filled with constant interruptions and name calling. Wil knows hes a liar. Youre the worst president america has ever had. Ive done more in 47 months, more than youve done in 47 years. Many zeroing in on the president s refusal to condemn white supremacist groups. You want to call them give me a name . White supremacists. Proud boys, stand back and stand by but ill tell you what somebody has to do something about antifa and the left because this is not a right wing problem. The biden team says they expected this to turn no a freeforall and even practiced how he should not react. The president tweeted that it was two against one, him versus biden and the moderator. Up next for us the Vice President ial debate which will take place one woke from today. Covid19 certainly changed the rules for the president ial debate but it didnt lower interest levels. Instead of a packed watch party mannys hosted a virtual event. 100 people on one screen watching the debate. Many say they were frustrated with the candidates and the moderator for talking over each other. I think that was the most childish debate ive ever seen in my life. The most interruptions in my memory are going to be Chris Wallaces repeated interruptions of the president. It felt like the president was debating both Chris Wallace and joe biden. Joe biden had a guest at the debate. She spoke at the Democratic National convention linking President Trumps down playing of the coronavirus to her fathers death. He died of coronavirus in june. Scott mcgrew will join us with additional analysis in about ten minutes. We continue to follow breaking news this morning, the latest on the glass fire that continues to burn in the north bay. The fire has now burned more than 46,000 acres and is essentially out of control at just 2 containment. At least 80 homes in napa and Sonoma County are lost, not to mention the damaged property to wineries and hotels. More than 20,000 structures remain threatened. Heres the latest napa county evacuation orders from last night. West from highway 29 and 128. Also the entire town of angwin and the area of pope valley. We have a map showing you just how far this fire has expanded in napa and sonoma counties since it started on sunday. It was really another nervous night for calistoga evacuees. They are hoping firefighters managed to hold the line with the entire town still under those evacuation orders. Thats where today in the bays Cierra Johnson joins us live right now. Cierra . Reporter yes, good morning. Were back for morning two of our visit to calistoga because the town has evacuated and the firefight continues. Over my shoulder on that hillside has since been has since died down. There is the heavy presence of smoke here and at calistoga. As i mentioned that firefight continues as i was driving in. You see the hot spots and that uncertainty, why they have asked members of this community to evacuate. Now they are evacuating so the crews can focus on the firefight instead of rescue missions. We had crews spread throughout this Community Last night, and they tell us at one point the fire trucks can be seen racing to the hills again to knock down the fire that continues to burn in the town of calistoga. When neighbors return they will find their landmarks have been of land thrhe fire. Business owner has to say about the intensity of the fire here in calistoga. This is the life blood and the life force of making wine. Its still standing. Its still here. Were incredibly fortunate. Reporter and another individual that was fortunate was the fire chief of the san mateo strike team. Those fires weve been covering in santa rosa, specifically the skyhawk neighborhood, he was patrolling the area looking for hot spots when he was just missed by a chimney that collapsed during that fire. That gives you an idea of how dangerous the situation is not only those flames but some of the debris that can fall in this area. And, again, when i was driving in, i had to go through several checkpoints and i had chp deputy let me know that because of the hot spots there is the risk of falling trees so, again, another reason why members of the community have been evacuated because of the uncertainty of this fire. Cierra johnson, today in the bay. Be careful. Two more bay area counties this morning entering the next phase of reopening and for San Francisco limited Indoor Dining for the first time in months. Today in the bays bob redell is live for us in walnut creek. What does it mean for Contra Costa County, bob . Reporter good morning to you, marcus. The state of california is giving Contra Costa County permission to enter the red tier phase of reopening which every county except for sonoma has achieved as you can see on the map on your tv screen. Sonoma in purple tier. San francisco just moved into orange which means the spread of covid there is moderate. The only bay area county to advance that far so far. Coco and the others are red which means they have substantial spread. Contra costa county means things you see on your tv screen can reopen at reduced capacity. Were talking about indoor museums, movie theaters, malls and gyms. The county says outdoor playgrounds will reopen. The state is allowing all outdoor playgrounds to reopen in california with safety restrictions but its still up to the county to say okay or not. After 14 days in the red tier Contra Costa County will be able to resume inperson classes. The superintendent of schools says this is a, quote, positive development. She said its also up to schools to decide if they want to return. The county says its distributing ppe to schools to prepare for a possible return to campus and providing special training for teachers on safety measures. They can allow Indoor Dining and places of worship to operate at 25 capacity. We spoke to the owner of mccarthys bar who says they have challenges to reopen Indoor Dining including rather bizarre directives, she says are coming from the city. Another directive, tvs arent allowed to be on which doesnt make any sense at all. I dont think anyone will catch covid from watching football games. Reporter some gyms are not happy with the city of San Francisco. The state said they can reopen those gyms at 25 capacity but the city of San Francisco right now wont allow it. Reporting live here in walnut creek, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you, bob. Lets stay in walnut creek and check out our temperature trend as were starting out with the smoky sky and well have to deal with unhealthy air quality today but at least temperatures are cool to start. It will heat up quickly as we go throughout the day and by 1 00 were in the upper 80s as we head towards the upper 90s for high temperatures today. Well see a high in antioch reaching 99 degrees. 82 in observing. San francisco will see temperatures there in the low 70s while napa will reach 93. San jose heading to a high of 89 degrees. Still very hot, getting slightly hotter tomorrow so ill talk about a heat advisory going back into effect. Thats coming up in a few minutes. Mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute . Quite calm, kari. So were going to speak softly and hoping nothing bad happens as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza. We have a backup. As you would expect the toll plaza, the metering lights were turned on just before 6 00. No problem. The hov, three or more there. The maps, only the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. I mentioned three or more. The nimitz as well heading south through fremont and down to milpitas. Just a few days away theyre going to start charging. Back to you. Thanks, mike. 6 41 this morning. Still ahead on today in the bay the oakland as in doordie situation right now. Were going to give you a playbyplay coming up in a live report at 6 55. Plus you get the final word. Its hard to get any word in with this clown. Excuse me no, no, no, mr. President. Plus, we have highlights, if you can call them that, perhaps lowlights of last nights debate. Well go through it with you. Out to the big board this morning. Stocks are higher on Hopes Congress could pass some sort of Coronavirus Relief bill. Youre watching today in the bay. Right now at 6 44 we, unfortunately, are not done with the fire danger just yet. A new fire weather watch going up for the north bay mountains and around the glass fire all of these areas shaded in orange which begins tomorrow afternoon. Ill talk about the increasing winds, the low humidity and the hot temperatures that continue in the forecast coming up. And an hour after it was reported we still have one lane partially blocked south 880 heading through hayward. More slowing just past the san mateo bridge. That volume builds down to union city. Also san jose. We take a look at the headlights. No major problems, just a little bit of slowing between 680 and observing ro oakland road. Thanks so much, mike. It is 6 45. Were digesting last nights president ial debate as probably many of you are at home as well. And before we dive into this with scott mcgrew, reaction from lester holt and Savannah Guthrie probably sums up what most of you felt. The name calling that went to a new level, frankly, savannah, im at a bit of a loss for words. This was different, an allout grudge match, undignified at many times, cringe worthy. Loss of words. That pretty much sums up the reaction from a lot of people. It wasnt dignified at all. Lets bring in scott mcgrew. Honestly i would have turned it off if i werent paid to watch it. Already talk of not having the next three debates, this one went so poorly or at the very least the future moderators of the debate having some way of turning off the microphones so one person can talk at a time. Each candidate was given two minutes to react. Part of the time designated for bidens answer to a question. Health care at a much lower price he doesnt know how to do that. He has never offered a plan. He has never done a single thing. Gentlemen, you are both speaking at the same time. Moderator Chris Wallace not able to stop the two from interrupting each other. At one point wallace reminding the president his side agreed to allow biden two minutes of uninterrupted time but never actually allowed biden to speak uninterrupted. Biden for his part called the president a clown and at one point told the president of the United States shut up, man. Democrats had most feared that biden would lose his cool or make a bidenesque gaffe that he is known for. Perhaps because he never got the chance. Instead he spent a great deal of time ignoring the moderator and his opponent looking into the camera instead. Well be eager to find out the ratings on this episode because, we suspect, based on what people are saying on social media, they watch for about half an hour and then turn the whole thing off. Jake tapper of cnn called the debate a hot mess inside a Dumpster Fire inside a train wreck. Now the lowest point came when the president was asked to condemn white supremacy. Sure, he said, but then gave support to the socalled proud boys. I would say almost everything i see is from the left wing not from the right wing. What are you saying im willing to do anything then do it, sir. Say it. You want to call them what do you want to call them . White supremacists proud boys, stand back and stand by but ill tell you what, somebody has to do something about antifa and the left because this is not a right wing problem. Now on fox news this morning fox news they said donald trump blew the biggest layup in the history of debates by not condemning white supremacists. I dont know if he didnt hear it, but hes got to clarify it right away. Thats like asking are you against evil . Why the president didnt just knock it out of the park, im not sure. The next debate may be more president ial because the president ial candidates are not going to be there. Kamala harris will debate mike pence a week from today. Everybody is talking about this on twitter. Im sure you are as well. Lets join the conversation. Give me your reaction and find me on twitter scottmcgrew. Thanks, scott. The election is 34 days away. You can plan your vote ahead by going to nbcbayarea. Com. Of course were also posting ballot dropoff locations as well. It is 6 49. Os hot continuing. Yeah, weve seen that as well as all the fires burning across the state. We look at all the fires we have going on and producing a high amount of smoke and also burning a record amount of acreage. Cal fire posted this yesterday showing that this year weve been breaking all kinds of records and so far with 8,155 fires weve burned more than 3. 8 million acres across the state. Its just unbelievable when you go back and average it out.
