The conditions on the fire lines are changing by the minute. In the past hour, theres evacuations in Sonoma County, as well. Crews are up against gusty conditions as they work to protect homes and vineyards. The biggest of the fires is the glass fire, which started early this morning. Its burning east of calistoga, north of st. Helena. Flames have scorched 2,500 acres and counting. Two new fires have started nearby. Look at this photo. A terrifying scene overnight. Flames are shooting up in the sky. This was taken at Crystal Springs road. Thats in st. Helena. Were starting to hear about the harrowing stories of people escaping these flames. Thom jensen is joining us from st. Helena. Reporter yes. Just on the north end of st. Helena. You can see the glow in the hills behind us. This is, you can see, is moving south towards the town of st. Helena. A short time ago, it jumped the highway here, highway 29, and is burning behind the culinary institute, on the other side of the highway. And it continues to move towards the downtown area of st. Helena. Wind gusts up to 70 Miles Per Hour, helped push the glass fires southward movement. A cal fire aerial assault that started early in the morning lasted all day. And helped save the davis state winery and several homes. The buckets are relatively small. I hope that we can put it out. Reporter he watched the firefight from a 145,000 squarefoot castle winery that he started to build in 1994. I tried to rescue everything of medieval origiorigin. Reporter he continues to worry about the Wine Industry in napa valley, the pan dem eck and the fires. Were down onethird or onefourth visitation. Reporter he is scared that the fire will scare away people from the hill. We are only on visitation. We have done that on my other winery and this winery. Reporter he and several of his employees are also concerned about their own homes and loved ones along Crystal Springs road, where the fire started early in the morning. We saw a lot of destruction there, but no burned homes. And so far, cal fire is not reporting the loss of any homes. Even since we had been pulled over here, along highway 29 tonight, a lot of people coming up to us and asking us if we were back in that area, in the burned area, and how their neighborhoods might be, asking about this glow up in the hills and whether or not any homes have been lost back there. I can tell you, there was a lot of concern, at least on our part, for firefighters back there. When this fire came over the mountain here, just about an hour ago, it moved very quickly. A harrowing drive out of the fire zone caught on video. This was recorded by a napa county sheriffs deputy early in the morning. Not just embers, but burning debris, raining on the road and the cars. Very dangerous there. The trees and the brush on the sides of the road, already fully engulfed. The Sheriffs Department posted a video with a warning. That warning, very important here. Never wait for the last second to evacuate. Just in the newsroom, this is new video tonight. The new fire along the napa county, Sonoma County line. Firefighters are so busy. But its around the napa valley state park. We will update this story throughout our newscast and online. The heat and the wind, firefighters are up against very tough conditions as they battled this fire. We hear about 70mileperhour winds earlier. Rob mayeda is keeping an eye on all of this. Weve seen gusts over 70 Miles Per Hour. Were seeing the second wave of strong, gusty winds arriving. You can see the impact of the fire over my shoulder. The time lapse pushing the smoke close to the ground. But long range spotting right there. You see that behind me. When the winds go strong, it takes the embers and throws them away from the fire front and sets off new fires. Unfortunately, this is the rapid rate of spread we see in the north bay, as the offshore winds pick up. The Current Conditions outside right now. No help from the weather. The winds are picking up. 90s out there. 14 humidity. Think about that. Its daytime dry and the winds are accelerating. Thats a top concern, heading into tomorrow morning, from napa county to the Sonoma County line. The wind speeds increase slightly towards sunrise. At the same time, humidity numbers are likely to decrease, heading towards sunrise. This is the night, in those areas, you want to stay tuned. Be ready and prepared. The red flag warning will be until 9 00 tomorrow night. Fire crews will have a hard time with the heat on the fire lines tomorrow. Weve been watching a line of fire progress throughout the evening. We keep seeing flares in those hills. Those are the hills just a little east of silverado trail, just outside of calistoga. For a good part of the afternoon, there were helicopters trying to keep that under control. As soon as the sun set, unfortunately, they had to ground. Of course, in the area through there, theres been a number of ev evacuation. Its worldfamous for fiwine. Tonight, napa valley is threatened by fire. The glass fire moved near populated areas. Among the properties that had to clear out, the meadowwood resort near st. Helena. Everyone has departed at this point. Were just getting everybody all of the luggage from people who were out and about and cant get back on to property. And getting all of the employees out. I am feeling for the firefighters up there in this heat. Theyre working hard. I have been watching the planes and the helicopters all day. Theyre hitting it hard. Im confident theyll get it done. Reporter paul lives nearby. He says the Sheriffs Department has been good about giving updates in nearby calistoga throughout the afternoon. Tourists and residents have pulled over to watch the fire in the nearby hills. And efforts by helicopter pilots to keep the flames at bay. But the afternoon heat and steady breezes have continued to push the glass fire along. Unfortunately, those breezes and the heat continues tonight, as rob just said. It feels like its about 90 degrees out here. And we can continue to see flareups from this line of fire that is in the hills, just a little south and east of calistoga. Well continue to keep an eye on this. I should tell people to make sure you have your cell phones handy. There are a number of updates, advisories on your cell phone, coming through about new evacuation warnings and orders. Make sure you read those carefully. They have detailed information. If you hear the sound, its time to go. Many people forced to flee their homes are headed to an Evacuation Center in napa. Thats where marrianne favro is. Reporter 300 people have come to this center today. Many of them received food and vouchers for hotels. If they choose, they can spend the night here at this church. For many of them, this is the second time in six weeks theyve been forced to evacuate. These three are no strangers to the evacuation process, and neither is their owner. They had to flee a month ago, when the complex fire got too close to their home. Early this morning, the glass fire forced them to get out. . Im thankful for the evacuation we had six weeks or whatever. It was a trial run. I figured out what i needed to do. I was more prepared this time around. I got stuff packed in the car. Reporter nicholas wells left his home this morning with his cat and a few things. Pillows and sleeping bags. Tonight, he plans to sleep in his car and volunteer to maintain heavy equipment firefighters use on the front lines. Nicholas hopes this is the last time he will be forced to evacuate this year. A woman got into his home through an unlocked door yesterday, grabbed the baby, carried the baby upstairs. Thats where montana and his wife confronted the woman and thankfully got the 9monthold back. The woman tried to hide at a neighboring home but was arrested and charged with kidnapping and burglary. Montana tweeted today, thanks to everyone who reached out. Scary situation but thankful that everyone is doing well. We are getting the first and most complete look at President Trumps texases. The New York Times reporting that it obtained the federal tax returns for the past 15 years. The return showing the president only paid 750 in federal income tax in 2016. He also paid the same amount in the first year of his presidency. The New York Times found that in 10 of the 15 years of returns they obtained, the president did not pay any federal income tax. The last update, it is at 2,500 acres have burned, 0 containment. 2,200 structures are threatened. The conditions are changing rapidly. Were following latest on the zogg fire in shasta county. Its burned several thousand acres. There are road closures in effect, as well. Its not clear how that fire started. Wind gusts up to 40 Miles Per Hour are helping it spread quickly. Unfortunately, when it comes to the wind and the humidity, not good news. The winds are expected to stay as strong as they are right now in the north bay and likely could increase slightly ahead of sunrise. We show you the conditions ahead of the glass fire burning along the napa Sonoma County border. It is taking a rapid run off to the south and west, to the eastern side there. If you look at oakmont and santa rosa, thats the way the direction is moving. You see the smoke showing up thats actually ash, thats falling from the fire. Thats what the radar is scanning, falling near santa rose sa. That gives you an arrow pointer where the fire could be headed next. Thats where the winds are pushing the fires. Look at the tremendous amount of smoke, as the offshore winds gave new life to the existing fires in the north. The glass fire, with heavy fires and smoke pollution. Well see a spare the air day tomorrow. The worst of the air quality will be around the inland portions of the bay area and the north bay into tomorrow. 9 00, were in the 70s. Lunchtime, in the 70s. And the north bay, the firefighting efforts will be tough. Were looking at tripledigit temperatures around monday. The sea breeze tries to come back tuesday. Relief for the bay and coast by midweek. But inland locations will have a tough time cooling down. Mid 90s through wednesday, trending cooler toward next weekend. A few weeks ago, we had to evacuate. We were out for seven days. Hopefully this one will be shorter and well have a home to go to. Reporter she was able to get her cats and photos, the things that matter. Cory got a call from a friend and decided to leave. I hadnt unpacked from the last evacuation. I grabbed my dogs and had things in my car. Reporter pam stopped briefly, away from the home she left, in the distance, smoke drifted up the hill. This is a tragedy. Not supposed to happen, you know . We havent had this many fires in my lifetime, so close together. I was just here for the hennessey fire a month ago. Reporter she knows flames are moving in. Shes a grower worried about the vineyard and worried about the home. I didnt believe it would get out of control that quickly. Heres a map showing the latest evacuation orders and warnings. Not talking about dogs and cats here. This is being set up at the napa valley horsemans association. They are asking people to bring feed, as well, if possible. Just as the fire caught people offguard, campers woke up to this scene early this morning. Out camping 4 30 in the morning. Campers rush to pack out of the flames. Some were confused. They didnt smell any smoke. They didnt think it was real. The orange glow lit up the sky and it was very real. Swift action, st. Helena hospital, as flames burned out of control. The hospital, a few miles out of the start of the fire. Out of abundance of caution, the hospital shut down and evacuated all of the patients. They made the move while they had time. There were 55 patients there at the time. We are very prepared for this. Unfortunately, we have been through this before. We have a Fabulous Team that does work on this. Were pros at it by now. Medical teams from San Francisco, and con Contra Costa County were working on the patients. Four Ambulance Strike teams and a bus to get everyone out. Neighborhoods near the hospital sprung into action. People were racing to evacuate. Many had things packed up, evacuating from the lnu fire. They were not expecting to leave so soon. Morning, about 4 00, with one of our neighbors, beating on our windows and doors saying, fire, fire, get out. We jumped up and had to evacuate last time. We were more ready then. Some say they are rethinking living in the area altogether. Air support has been coming in steady all day over napa county. Check this video out. This is a 747 supertanker dropping retardant over the flames. Theres so many vineyards and wineries in this area. The flames are threatening so many of them. You can see in this video from our sky ranger, earlier today, how close the flames are coming to some of them. Flames are jumping highways. New fires have started tonight. Thom jensen rejoining us from st. Helena. Tom, whats the situation where you are right now . Reporter youre right. The flames have been moving quickly on this hillside. Were on the north side of st. Helena. This is the charles krug winery right here. And the winds have died down a little bit right now. They were blowing steadily for hours and pushing the fire this way towards the town of st. Helena. The fire really jumped across the hills here. We had a lot of concern about all of the firefighters. My photographer, mike horn, and i, saw a lot of fire crews. This fire blew over the hills. We saw a lot of them coming out. And then, the fire jumped highway 29 here, across to the culinary institute, that was right across the highway, not burning at the institute itself, but in a heavily forested area behind the institute. And a lot of people in this area tell me they are concerned about that. That area back there has not burned for about 60 years. Its heavily forrested. Its really dry. The winds are picking up again right now. This wind picks up, its also still very hot tonight, about 94 degrees right now, as rob mayeda was talking about. The firefighters are not getting a break from the elements as they would normally get in the evenings. And this is becoming the new norm. The heat at night and no break from the fire activity. And thats what were seeing right now, live in st. Helena. Winds blowing up to 74 Miles Per Hour. You expressed your concern for firefighters during your previous report. Give us an idea what the firefighters go up against. Most people are leaving and getting the heck out of there. Those firefighters are running right into it. They are going up in the steep terrain, where theres a lot of forestation, dry like we were talking about. And tight roads. Its not easy to get in and out of. They had a lot of fire trucks back there. A lot of firefighters. And the fire just moved extremely quickly over the hillside, toward the town of st. Helena here. And we saw a lot of trucks coming out of there. Like i said, we sure hope everybody got out. We havent heard of any injuries right now. As of yet. Or any homes that were destroyed. We have seen a lot of firefighters rushing up there. We have seen a lot of ambulances and fire trucks with their lights and sirens on tonight. All right. Thom jensen, thanks very much. Were seeing more wind now than we had during the day in the ridgetop locations. Were seeing the combination of temperatures and the ash being connected on radar. Thats a scary sight to be seeing near santa rosa. The wind with the red arrow, thats where the fire front is pushing down, across the county line, towards oakmont and the east line there. Thats the area were seeing now. Stay tuned. If youre in those areas, you may have to make adjustments to the plants. And notice the winds. Theres no change in the winds all the way into about sunrise tomorrow, with the dry conditions, staying in the teens unchanged until sunrise tomorrow. That could keep the fire running to the southwest all the way to sunrise tomorrow morning. One person was killed and two others hurt this weekend, when a large tree limb fell on them in washington park. The person who was killed was from san mateo. The tree limb came down in the middle of a picnic. The other two victims are in the hospital tonight. The city is asking people to avoid n avenue near the park. The nfl is investigating the Las Vegas Raiders were possibly violating a covid19 protocol. This was the raiders celebrating the win in their locker room. An unauthorized person got into that locker room, which is not allowed, under the leagues strict covid protocols. Only 40 employees per team can be allowed into the locker room. Its unknown who this person is. But he or she went around several security checkpoints to get there. The raiders could be disciplined if a rule was broken. This is after jon gruden was fined 100,000. Theres three zones on this map youre looking at right now. People in the red shaded area are being told to leave immediately. That includes the area south of st. Helena road, west of the Sonoma County line and east of calistoga road. And north of los alamos. The yellow portion of the map is in evacuation warnings. Thats the area north, west and east of Santa Rosa City limits. Lets get to rob for more on all of this. All of the firefighters cant wait to hear what the latest is. Yeah. The latest right now, shortterm between now and sunrise, not what you want to hear if youre the north bay. Gusty winds and low humidity and daytime dry temperatures all the way to sunrise. Lets talk about the wind and the challenges that firefighters are facing. Tonight, the focus will be on that wind pushing the fire off to the south and west. Low humidity numbers. Unfortunately, the increase in temperatures, too. Well be watching that closely, as you look at the conditions right now. Near calistoga, theres smoke pushing south to santa rosa and oakmo oakmont. I put a red aerorow on this map. Thats where the location for the fire front or the nose of the fire is. Encroaching on highway 12, coming in off of the napa Sonoma County border. Ash and embers. Thats what the radar is showing, moving to the west and santa rosa and oakmont. Thats where the fire continues to move, based on its current speed. Heres the problem, as we go through the next few hours, look at the humidity hours at sunrise. A sign that the north winds are not going to let up. You get the daytime heating and hot temperatures, as well. Humidity numbers in the single digits. That part of the equation does not look good. Dry conditions. And look at the wind speeds. You got the winds up to 20 or 30 Miles Per Hour. Perhaps a sign of some better news, once we get past 4 00 and towards this time tomorrow night. You see the wind speeds are starting to relax. Thats going to help the humidity numbers. Well be watching that closely in that area in the next 24 hours. Were seeing a lot of smoke. Thats being pushed towards the major fires, that got new life today. You can see how the glass fire is pushing a tremendous amount of smoke in santa rosa to unhealthy levels. And some of that is getting down the peninsula, too. You might wake up to smoke tomorrow morning, as we have a spare the air alert. North bay, east bay, in the santa clara valley, thats where well see the worst of the air quality tomorrow. Hourbyhour, the temperatures. The conditions that the firefighters will be facing in the north bay, as we get into the 90s by lunchtime. And the hottest temperatures around the bay tomorrow, will be in Contra Costa County, napa county, and marin county. You have temperatures 100 degrees and hilltop winds and poor humidity recoveries at night. A 24hour cycle of dealing with the conditions of these fires. Some relief, may try to return by tuesday. Notice the trend here on the future cast. Thats what we refer to as the southerly surge. The low clouds coming to the coast. Thats a big drop in temperatures. We jump to tuesday, for places like San Francisco and the coast, were back into the 70s. Tuesday could be a turning point for the coast and the interbay. Notice inland, were in the 90s. The high pressure, while it weakens, isnt totally going away. We should lose the strong, gusty, damaging offshore winds, as we head into tuesday and wednesday. That will open the door for cooling. San francisco in the 90s, 10 to 15 degrees in cooling. Well see numbers above the 90s in midweek. And trending into the 80s next weekend. Shortterm, fire danger, extremely high in the north bay, as were seeing the wind speeds we dont think are going to relax all that much. After sunrise, the wind speeds may not come down.
