Democrats are promising a fight with confirmation hearings set to begin two weeks from tomorrow. We will have the latest in a live report and talk to chuck todd just ahead. In our sunday focus, a look at the Supreme Court confirmation process through the years and how it turned into a series of escalating partisan fights. Then our sunday spotlight. As the country takes a fresh look at who deserves to be honored with a statue, a visit to the sculptor, the historic figure who is helping to put new deserving figures on a pedestal. A new virtual sunday sitdown and a rare conversation at home with actor john cusack on his anticipated new series utopia. How he hears about the boom box scene from say anything and his resume of enduring classic movies. Its weird. Its like having your yearbook picture on cable all the time. Kind of strange. A sunday sitdown with john cusack plus a life well lived later in the show. Lets begin with President Trump making official his choice of federal Appeals Court judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court seat of the late Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg. Hearings begin in two weeks as democrats gear up for a fight. What can they do to stop the nominee . Kelly odonnell has more. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The president s announcement of his newest conservative nominee for the Supreme Court is effectively a starting gun in a race to get Amy Coney Barrett confirmed before the election. She will begin inperson meetings with senators this week on capitol hill. The announcement the president made was the first act in a Campaign Rally late night in ce into a campaign ed judge Amy Coney Barrett. To the United StatesSupreme Court. Reporter from a solemn duty to a rally punch line, the president played up the judges intellect. Better than biden. Wouldnt you say . She should be running for president. Reporter made an appeal to his base. Most important of all, she will defend your god given rights and freedoms. Reporter earlier saturday at the white house, the president emphasized the judges family. A mother to seven children. If confirmed Justice Barrett will make history as the first mother of schoolage children to serve on the u. S. Supreme court. Reporter at 48, she would be the courts youngest member. Justice 15 years teaching law scalia. She acknowledged the justice she would succeed, ruth bader ginsburg. She not only broke glass ceilings, she smashed them. Reporter on issues, she shows support for gun rights. On abortion, she said roe versus wade was wrongly decided and pledged to follow the constitution. I would not assume that role for the sake of those in my own circle and certainly not for my own sake. I would assume this role to serve you. Reporter joe biden responded with a statement that highlighted the judges track record of disagreeing with the u. S. Supreme courts decision, upholding the Affordable Care act. Top Senate DemocratChuck Schumer said democrats will make health care the center of their fight against her nomination. A vote for judge barrett is a vote to take away health care and its protections for over 130 million americans who now have protection against preexisting conditions. Reporter the president is looking for a preelection sprint. Its going to go fast. We are looking to do it before the election. Its going to go very fast. Reporter the Judiciary Committee in the senate has set october 12th as the starting date. It is a mult tiistep process, including inperson meetings, committee hearings, open testimony. Hoping to get that through the committee, which is led by senate republicans, by the 26th of october, a very narrow window for a full senate confirmation. Democrats say they are united in their opposition. But they have very few tools to stop this confirmation. Willie . Kelly odonnell starting us white house. Thanks so much. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. Theres so much swirling around this pick, Amy Coney Barrett, a respected and wellliked conservative judge. Joe biden and democrats will put the Affordable Care act there as hanging in the balance on her vote. Is there anything to kellys point that democrats can do at this point . They dont have the votes. All republicans need is a simple majority. You know, i think this is the dilemma they have. There is a part of them that would like to figure out a way to delegitimize this process. Maybe, for instance, one of the senators from connecticut is not going to meet with her. He wants to boycott the process. Not make it seem legitimate in the eyes of the public. If you make the centerpiece of your dont get to maybe litigate the issue of health care, litigate the issue of abortion rights. I think thats the dilemma here. I think on one hand democrats see an opportunity that they believe that her positions put her outside the mainstream of where the final voters that are undecided are sitting. I think thats the dilemma they have. I do think some would like to delegitimize the process. Does that take it off the issues you think can help you . Lindsey graham says hearings start two weeks from tomorrow. They are moving ahead quickly with this process. Lets talk about some of the president s comments this week about the electoral process, about the peaceful transfer of power. He walked that back a little bit but said a couple of times this week he would have to wait to see how things happen. He wouldnt agree to leave if he loses the vote. What does this mean for the time between november 3rd election day and a couple of days or maybe even weeks when mailin votes are still being counted . How is this going to play out . Thats what have a lot of folks in official washington concerned. You have folks at the pentagon nervous. Will the president invoke the insurrection act and drag the military into a disputed election or even if its not disputed, the president may claim its disputed. Theres fears that the president we know what this is. This is his vanity, its a distraction tactic, its ego more than it is some authoritarian trigger in him. It doesnt mean it doesnt have the impact of that. I think that is what has a lot of folks in town very nervous, willie, that what is the president willing to do . He crosses lines all the time. He may do it for nasa srcissist reasons. Thats the concern around town. We should underline the director of the fbi this weekend said, there is no widespread voter fraud that the fbi has seen. Lastly, the debate, two days from now, we get to see the two candidates standing next to each other, 90 minutes in cleveland tuesday night. What should we expect . Its going to be interesting. It could be asymmetric warfare, if you will. Doldlion things out there and almost dares you to pick and choose which one you have to respond to. The thing im looking for is joe biden, does he find a way like Ronald Reagan to dismiss it. There you go again and move on. Can he effectively do that . I think thats going to be his biggest challenge. Thats the only really tactic that the president has in debating. Just constant barrage of rhetorical attacks. He knows its coming. Dealing with them isnt easy. Chucke ed ttodd, thank you v much. A busy morning for you. Chuck is joined by h. R. Mcmaster who is out with a in ynew book. The biden harris ticket is getting an endorsement from dwayne johnson, the former professional wrestling hero turned movie star is making the announcement today in a social media video. Sunday i have never publically endorsed a president ial candidates or a Vice President ial candidates in my life, over my career so i figured, lets kick this conversation off this way by me officially publically endorsing you both to become president and Vice President of our great country. Thats fantastic. Thank you thank you it means a great deal to us for real. Thank you. Really. Thank you. Dwayne johnson endorsing joe biden for president. Johnson is known as the rock in his wrestling says, says he invites Vice President biden and talked about their fathers and the importance of earning respect by your actions. With his official nomination on saturday of Amy Coney Barrett to the United StatesSupreme Court, President Trump set in motion a confirmation process that already was contentious, even before we knew the name of the nominee. Senate republicans need only a simple majority to confirm judge barrett to the court, as democrats protest loudly about the timing of the process just weeks before election day. The circumstances are unique this time. But an ugly partisan fight over a Supreme Court nominee is nothing new. Casey hunt has our sunday focus. Reporter through the arc of us Supreme Court history, not much has changed. The court has always been contentious. Early confirmation hearings were not even open to the public. The first in 1916 lasted 19 days, longer than any hearing before or since. No one, including a judge, can be above the law. Reporter the partisan division we know in modern times really started with robert fork, nominated by president reagan. Ted kennedy went to the floor of the senate not long after the nomination was announced. There is no room at the inn for blacks and no place in the constitution for women and in our america, there should be no seat on the Supreme Court. Reporter he was rejected because of concerns he was too conservative. Supreme court politics, which had been removed from the cut and thrust of daily unfolding struggle for power and contro b nominee Clarence Thomas faced a contentious nomination. He would turn it to sexual matters. As far as im concerned, its a high tech lynching for up bla. Reporter he barely made it through. Most others nominated later, sailed through. President s tried to find consensus choices. That stopped with merrick garland. A decision requires me to set aside narrow politics to maintain faith with our founders and more importantly with future generations. Reporter nominated 269 days before the 2016 election the nomination should be made by the president thechcconnell refused to even hold a hearing and kept the seat open until President Trump nominated kneel gorsuch. The decision poisoned the senate. Whats the level of anger among democrats . We have come to expect this ruthless abuse of power from Mitch Mcconnell and the president. I watched it for four years. As far as im concerned, im angry, but i want to channel that. Reporter three democrats voted to confirm gorsuch. Just when it seeped eseemed it get worse was brett kavanaugh. He sexually assaulted me. This has been an orchestrated political hit. Reporter with republicans reversing course and racing to confirm President Trumps nominee before the election, theres concern about the high courts ability to be a neutral a political pawn is not a good look, especially going into a contented election. North offshore winds would be gusting at the hillside area for elevations of 1,000 feet, upwards of 40plus miles per hour. Were going to be seeing high temperatures and low humidity through this evening. Current temperatures now in the 60s and 50s. Winds overall throughout are pretty calm for the most part now but then will gust up into the afternoon and we are also now looking at a heat advisory in effect from 11 00 a. M. Today through 7 00 p. Did i listen to pop music because i was miserable or was i miserable because i listened to pop music . Thats john cusack starring in thefidelity. He wrote that movie and earned a golden globe nomination for best actor. The 54yearold cusack has been in gross pointblank. He can do big hits. Beginning with the famous teenage rolls of the 1980s, he made a career of playing the lovable outsider. Im so interested because you are so selective and have been over your career about the characters you play and the roles you atatake. I appear to be selective. I give you a charitable assessment. Too much credit. I appreciate it. His latest project, utopia is a rare venture away from film into episodic tv. Its adopted from a british series. We are talking about a p pandemic which we are going through now. You couldnt have predicted that when you were shooting the show or conceiving the show. Do you see all of the scenes throughout the show. Surreal is the only word to describe the fact what happens in the show, you look out your window and look at the television and read the papers and it seems like it seems too similar. Off screen, he always has been vocal about what he sees outside his window. Advocating again this Election Year for progressive politicians and policies. Theres an enormous amount of suffering out there. I can remember very clearly when my father passed away, it was very hard. I was aware that when the Insurance Company said were not going to pay for it, i could pay for it because im an actor.
