Welcome back this morning on your health as we head into cold and flu season, were still in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. Thats right. So if youre feeling under the weather, how do you know if its coronavirus, the common cold, or the flu . Nbcs senior medical correspondent, dr. John torres is here to help us out with all of this. Doctor john, good to see you. Lets start off with the fact that its three weeks since labor day and we are seeing some new surges. So how concerned are you about that . Kristen, very concerned about this. If you look at the numbers, almost half the states are seeing increases. We would hope we would be down to around 10,000 cases a day by now and were starting to bump up to around 50,000 cases a days and once the cold weather hits, the coronaviruses will come back a lot mocooler, people will startg some sniffles, somecoronavirus. How do they know the difference . Peter, it can be hard to tell, at least initially, because the symptoms are almost the same. You start feeling under the weather, a little lowgrade fever, but then they start differentiating themselves. When youre looking at coronavirus, these are the telltale signs. One is the lost of sense, taste or smell, difficulty breathing, fever, those are signs you want to go to the emergency room if youre having problems, chills, congestion, abdominal issues tend to be one big things with coronavirus. With the cold, on the other hand, and weve all had colds from time to time, a lot are the sniffles, you rarely get a fever, sneezing, stuffy nose, sore threat and post nasal drip. If you have chest pain or breathing issues, you want to go to the emergency room. And throw the flu into this mix. How do you know if its the flu . Thats a great point. Especially between flu and coronavirus, its going to be difficult to tell. With the flu, fever is a big indicator, but body aches are probably the biggest differentiation between the flu and coronavirus, because typically you dont get that bad of body aches with the coronavirus. The vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal issues, but the biggest thing with the flu are those body aches, when people tell me they have the flu, they tell me they cant get out of bed for a couple of days, peter. When should folks be thinking about getting their flu shot . Should they be doing it right now . Kristen, now is a great time to get the flu shot, because the flu will start to move in, usually around the november time frame. And you want to go ahead and call ahead. This year, theyre going to have record numbers of flu shots. But you also have to realize, were in the midst of the pandemic, so its not going to be like last year where you can walk into a pharmacy or Doctors Office and get the flu shot. Call ahead to see what theyre doing. You want to get it before the end october. Think before halloween. And everyone 6 months or older should get it. It does take two weeks to kick in, so get it before flu season gets here, because thats almost too late at that point. And were actually doing that with our daughters today and this is my wife killing me if theyre watching, because we havent told the girls this is happening yet today. Oh, theyre cheering as they hear this. Yeah, exactly. This is not going to go well at home. So if you are feeling sick, it bears repeating. What should you do . So if you are feeling sick, one of the things to do is look at your symptoms. If your symptoms are something you can take care of home, certainly take care of it at home. If you dont know, if you havent been tested and you dont know if its coronavirus or flu or the cold, assume its coronavirus at this point. Because we are in a pandemic. So quarantine yourself. If youre going to your Doctors Office, call ahead, because you need to find out how theyre taking care of patients and letting you in. And try to get tested. Right now, theres an fda test to prove for the covid and flu, but its t get back. What theyre looking at that takes 15 minutes that can detect both of them. You want to call ahead to make sure that they have the accommodations and what you need to do before you go into the office. But more importantly, if youre sick, think coronavirus at this point until proven otherwise. So go ahead and stay home, avoid other people, so youre not spreading it. Better to be safe than sorry in this case. All right, dr. John torres, thanks for the great information, as always. And coming up, trading the dorm room for the beach, the mountains, and more. How some college try wayfair. You got this perfect. Youre welcome. I love it. Howd you do all this . Told ya wayfair. Lets talk dining tables. Yes blow it up. Wayfair youve got just what i need. College campuses have been the setting for some recent outbreaks of the coronavirus, as you know, with administrators cracking down on parties and even sending some students back home. But what about those students who never moved back on campus . It turns out, Remote Learning has some perks for some. Nbcs carl nasman has more. Carl, good morning. Reporter good morning. Yeah, i mean, universities nationwide, they are now for the most part back in session, but that does not mean that all students are back on campus. I mean, you touched on it. That Traditional College life, really the pandemic is affecting that and its pushing a lot of classes online. So some students this fall are offcampus. And i mean, way offcampus. Trading the dorm room for the beach or the open road. It sounds like a college kids dream. But this year, not as crazy as it sounds. Silver valley road. With tens of thousands of cases of covid19 on campuses nationwide, in barbados, less than 200 all year. The best thing about being here is the flexibility of being able to go out and not feel as if your life is at risk. Reporter these students are saving money, too, with the cost of renting a vacation house comparable or even cheaper than living on campus. And theres also something money cant buy. They want to enjoy the outdoors and have a college experience. We trust them and i think the truth will come through when they make the deans list. Reporter yeah, no pressure, the deans list. Thanks for that, dad. It was interesting speaking to these students, despite these beautiful locations where theyre studying right now, most of them, if not all of them said they actually do miss that campus life. And they cant wait to get back on campus, as soon as next semester, as long as it is safe, and of course, that is still the big question, guys . Carl, thanks for that. Dylan, can you imagine trying to convince your parents, hey, im going to do the hawaii mini course. Yeah, i dont think so. I was looking for being able to afford a can of soup in college, too.
