Steve from rockefeller in the heart of new york city, its the tonight show starring jimmy fallon. Tonight join jimmy and his guests, Keira Knightley. Chelsea clinton. Musical guest tame impala. And featuring the legendary roots crew and now heres your host, Jimmy Fallon Jimmy hey, everybody thank you so much for tuning in thanks for watching the tonight show. My names jimmy fallon and that is the roots right over there, ladies and gentlemen. Lets get to the news and jokes. Well, guys, the big story is still the Supreme Court, and today it looks like the republicans cleared an important hurdle senator lindsey graham, the chair of the Senate Judiciary committee, now says the republicans have the votes to confirm president trumps nominee to fill Justice Ginsburgs seat before the election, before they even know who the nominee is jimmy thats right 51 out of 53 republicans are now on board while the other two stick out like masks at a maga rally [ laughter ] thats right, the republicans are really Backing Trump on this they were like, we got him through mueller, the impeachment, and that time he called america the united schess. were not stopping now. Now it sounds like a vote could be held in just a few weeks. Man, we havent seen republicans move this fast since mens warehouse had a closing sale seriously, you can Tell Senate Republicans are loving life right now. They havent been this happy since blue bloods started streaming on hulu. [ laughter ] its pretty wild the republicans are in favor of trumps nominee, and he hasnt named one yet. Even the people who got engaged on love is blind were like, dont you want to see who it is first . How do you agree to put someone on the Supreme Court before you know who they are . I dont even pick up a phone call when i dont know who it is unknown . I dont like four of those people [ laughter ] im not going to pick up right now. I still cant believe were letting trump make that choice hes terrible at hiring people everyone hes ever hired is fired or in prison, or in Steve Bannons case, almost both well, guys, last night in ohio trump held another rally and he said something pretty interesting about who the coronavirus affects. Watch this we now know the disease we didnt know it. Now we know it it affects elderly people, elderly people with heart problems and other problems. Nobody young below the age of 18, like nobody but it affects virtually nobody its an amazing thing. Trump said the virus affects virtually nobody. Then somebody in the front row sneezed, and trump hit the floor like he dropped his remote after trump made that comment, doctors and nurses wanted to respond, but theyre currently in the middle of a 4,000hour shift. It affects virtually nobody. How could he say that . Right now my entire staff is dressed like a bunch of welders who went scuba diving. [ laughter ] meanwhile, as covid cases begin to rise again in the uk, Prime MinisterBoris Johnson has decided to take action we are once again asking Office Workers who can work from home to do so unless we palpably make progress, we should assume that the restrictions ive announced will remain in place for perhaps six months jimmy yeah, people immediately promised to follow the rules because if they dont, Boris Johnson threatened to send them to america. [ laughter ] can we see Boris Johnson again yeah its not good when americans look at him and say, i wish we should someone like that. [ laughter ] well, listen to this i read that walmart is going to start delivering covid19 test kits by drone. Yep. The good news, theres a new covid drone from walmart the bad news, its being operated by an 85yearold greeter. Hold still. Here comes the airplane. Im no expert, but if you told me 20 years ago wed have flying drone delivering pandemic test kits to our house, id say things did not go awell. [ laughter ] some sports news on sunday, a few nfl coaches didnt wear masks on the sidelines. Now theyre being punished by the league check it out the nfl has dished out more than 1 million in fines for coaches not Wearing Masks on the sidelines on sunday. Three head coaches, seattles pete carroll, denver vic fangio, and san franciscos Kyle Shanahan each fined 100,000 jimmy 100,000 even for them, thats a lot of money. To put that into perspective, punching a ref is just 50 and an apology [ laughter ] yeah, over 1 million in fines or, as trump put it, virtually nothing. Yep, they want the coaches Wearing Masks. Meanwhile, the maskless players all ran back to the ventless locker room and showered together [ laughter ] well, this isnt good. After launching less than six months ago, the streaming platform quibi is now exploring a potential sale quibi actually announced they were for sale a few months ago, but no one saw it. [ laughter ] quibi failed when everyone was home doing nothing thats like offering water at the end of a marathon and runner is like, nah, im good. [ laughter ] im just extremely thirsty is all. Actually, i like quibi because its the only thing in 2020 that seemed to go fast. And finally, this is a strange anniversary. 60 years ago today president nixon ate half a sandwich in illinois listen what happened to the other half i picked it up and hopped on my bicycle and sped home i said, mom, ive got the sandwich that nixon took a a couple bites out of. I stuck it in the freezer, and thats the way it still is today, 60 years later. [ laughter ] jimmy and 60 years from now, his grandkid will show off trumps half eaten big mac [ laughter ] im just kidding he didnt leave half right jimmy we have a great show for you tonight. She stars in the new film misbehavior. Keira knightley is here. Plus her new book, she persisted in sports american olympians who changed the game is available now Chelsea Clinton is here. And weve got great music from tame impala. Give it up for the roots, ladies and gentlemen jimmy hey, guys. We have some very exciting news all next week we have the biggest band in the world on the show bts theyre going to perform a new song every night were going to be talking to them weve got some fun games planned, lots more and were kicking it all off monday night with a special musical performance with bts, me, and the roots. Yeah lets just say its going to be big. Questlove big. Jimmy its going to be explosive. Its going to be like tnt. Questlove boom jimmy its going to be i cant think of any other words, but its going to be big so tune in every single night next week. Its bts week on the tonight show. Its going to be fun [ applause ] well, i actually hear that trump actually met with a potential Supreme Court nominee yesterday. But get this it looks like trump is returning to his tv roots when it comes to his search for a a justice. Check out this trailer i saw the white house release earlier today. Hello im president donald j. Trump. I know everything there is to know about the law because ive broken it many times so i know what it takes to be a Supreme Court justice. And now one lucky lady is going to walk away with the job and endless power until she dies this is so you want to be a a Supreme Court justice. The competition wont be easy picking a Supreme Court justice is one of the most important things and challenging things a president ever has to do thats why im jamming it in by saturday maybe friday if i work without the tv on. This season im looking for a female judge who can live up to rbgs historic legacy and undo all of it thats right, a female judge, or as the producers told me not to call it, a judgette im talking 8s and above, folks, and she better wow in the swim robe contest, or shes going to get eliminated, let me tell you you want to be my nominee . Then you better share my values, which include, many of the values because as you know, im very much with the values. I have the most values ever in history. They say, how does he fit so much values inside its amazing if you want to be a great judge, study those who came before you, like judge judy, dread, and reinhold. And if you think what you have what it takes to be on my Supreme Court, send in an audition tape explaining how you plan to undo three laws. The more immigrant stuff the better, folks. Just swing for the fences and see how many lives you can ruin well write it in later if we have to. Probably not join my search for the next Supreme Court justice. And, you know, forget about anything else going on, none of which is my fault. So you want to be a Supreme Court justice, coming to peacock this spring. No, no. This fall. Heck, this friday if we can swing it melania, unplug my tv. Jimmy stick around well be right back with Keira Knightley, everybody imagine the places well go. Together. Expedia red, blue, 16 percent undecided. Here we are a nation divided. But 2020 had us shook. So we gave the world another look. And saw a future of differences celebrated. Every voice advocated. Just imagine the possibility. Of a world where we are we. You make my heart sing wild thing i. Think i. You know what i think . I think you owe us 48. 50. Wild thing. If you ride, you get it. Geico motorcycle. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. If yousausage is a great im deal like life. Ah. You get out of it about what you put into it. You put in quality and you gonna get out quality. And thats what we do with jimmy dean. You have a wonderful day alright. Only lexus asks questions like these, because we believe the most amazing machines are inspired by you. Experience the rewards of our curiosity. Jimmy our first guest is an oscar and golden globe nominated actress. She stars in a new film called misbehavior, which is in select theaters and on demand this friday. Heres the very talented Keira Knightley. Keira, thank you so much for coming on the show its so good to see you. And you thank you. Jimmy i love that room youre in. What room are you in im in the garage im in the garage, and my no, but this is so the garage got converted sort of to a studio, music studio, because my husbands a musician. Jimmy yep. But ive basically been told im not allowed to touch anything if im in here. Im like, i dont know what all of this stuff is but hes literally been like, you touch anything, ill know about it so ive kind of sat here like this in the garage jimmy no, yeah, exactly. Those little nodules and knobs and things that you go, oh, if you mess with one thing no. You know, i had to plug my phone in and thing, and hes like, what are you doing i mean everything is jimmy dont even look at it dont even look at it jimmy no its the room of terror. So im in here but the good news is that theres sort of soundproofing, so you wont hear whats going on upstairs, which is i think my 5yearold going completely ballistic because its bedtime and nominee is not putting her to bed daddy is putting her to bed, so the whole house is in carnage, and im locked in the basement, so its great. Jimmy everythings great congratulations by the way you had another baby since i last saw you yes jimmy how is she doing how old . Shes good. Shes like shes a year now, yeah you know, we went into lockdown when she was about 6 months, so shes had a very strange life. And, you know, and that sort of involved my then 4yearold, who turned 5 in lockdown, sort of running around her a lot, yogo out so shes running around her. And the baby, who i thought would be sat and very easy to look after for quite a while, at 9 months just decided to get up and start walking jimmy no which i didnt think was possible because her feet were like this it didnt look physically possible. Her feet were that big jimmy i love those babies, yeah, yeah i know that. Little tiny, you know big butts and like tiny little feet and i think at any other point if we hadnt been on lockdown, i would have been like, whoa, my kids a genius. As it was, i was just like sit the [ bleep ] down we are not ready for this as well jimmy come on. Just go back to crawling yeah, crawling. Jimmy skipped over crawling she didnt crawl at all we put her on her belly to crawl, and shed look at you like what the [ bleep ] are you doing. Jimmy this is ridiculous let me show you what im about to do and starts Walking Around yeah, so its walking jimmy we talked about your oldest daughters obsession with paw patrol last time. Is she still in that phase or no Something Else that phase is gone, and now its the beatles jimmy oh, how fun. Yes i mean, yes, it is fun its fun so she but its really obsessive. So it will be she knows all of the well, theres four films, which, you know, im a fan of the beatles, but the films arent that great. We watch the films on a loop so hard days night, she literally knows all the words to hard days night. Paul mccartney is her big one. Every time Paul Mccartney comes on the screen, she just screams. Jimmy she loves them i didnt even tell her that was a thing with the beatles that people scream she just has this natural reaction that she must scream at Paul Mccartney every time she sees him jimmy no way isnt that bizarre its quite weird. Jimmy how did you get her into it . Is that you or your husband . It was not me [ laughter ] it was the person that this belongs to jimmy yeah remember listening to like did she start off with like Obladi Oblada and go from there . We did a bit of obladi, oblada, and then, you know, you think, oh, its going to be yellow submarine, and its not her favorite album is abbey road, and oh darling is her favorite track shes deep in. Like shes deep in before that, last year it was it was kate bush, and she was so obsessed with kate bush that if we wanted to listen to everything else, we had to pretend that they were related to kate bush in some way so it was bob marley bush, and p. J. Harvey bush, and, you know, all of this . Its like sneaking the veggies in with food, yeah yeah, exactly you know, youre kind of getting it all in there. So now its only friends of the beatles. Were allowed to listen to friends of the beatles jimmy is other kids her age into the beatles or any idea no. So i think this has been a bit of a problem because schools have just reopened here. So shes just gone back to school, which, you know, has been tricky because at home, shes just been watching the ipad and having chocolate shoved down her throat to try and get her to do school work. Jimmy everyones doing yeah, thats not happening anymore. The other thing is that all of the kids obviously think shes a bit weird because theyre not into the beatles, and when she tries and she really has a lot of knowledge so shell talk about ravi shankar, and shell talk about sitar playing. Jimmy what that is awesome . I think thats what we managed to do during lockdown was create a beatles maniac, but maybe reading and writing not so much. Jimmy no hey. Look, you start with the beatles. Thats a good thats a good investment so far her record has been nine hours listening to them solidly. Jimmy wow. And, yeah yeah, its been intense. She does actually at the moment, shes saying what she really wants for her Birthday Party when shes 6 is a beatles Birthday Party and she wants sergeant pepper themed, and she wants to go as Paul Mccartney, which im so hoping happens but i feel like, you know, shes back at school and all the kids are looking at her like shes a freak and its going to be like princess sparkly Unicorn Party jimmy thats where im at too. Im at princess sparkly unicorn. You could throw in a cof obladis or obladas the walrus man will maybe come into the princess sparkly party at some point. Jimmy right . Why not. Why not jimmy i was reading you had an obsession growing up that wasnt as popular in other kids houses yeah. It was the godfather jimmy how did you get a hold how did you watch the godfather . Well, i was about 11 or 12, and i think, you know, it was back in the time when we had vhss, and my parents had the video. So i stole the video i think id watched it i really remember watching it through the banisters or the stair and being like, this is the best thing ive ever seen in my life so i stole it, and id watch it secretly but so much that i actually knew the whole thing off by heart. I was completely obsessed, and i lost friends over it because friends would come over. I would be like, weve got to watch the godfather. And they were obviously more interested in princess sparkly things jimmy who did you like being . Were you Marlon Brando were you al pacino no, i was al pacino i was michael corleone jimmy so you were closing your door and stuff . Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, you know, that kind of psychotic kind of quiet, brooding power i mean i loved it. Oh i mean literally when i was 11 power hungry 11, want to be mafia boss you can see it its obvious in my casting thats what i should be. Jimmy now im going to look more every time i look at your films, and be like, shes doing al pacino right there. I can see it yeah, yeah. Thats the al pacino moment. Jimmy can i tell you this is a real, true thing. This is before i was even researching you coming on the show the last two days, two of my friends, separate friends, told me that they watched pride and prejudice and how much they loved it oh, thats nice jimmy i go, thats so bizarre. I go keiras coming on like today. I just had these discussions with two separate people about how much they love it and they love the direction people were talking about joe wright, and i was saying how fun he is. Yeah. Jimmy because i hung out with him years ago and we had but im like its great. I havent seen it in so long, but its bizarre like youre on all these different lists of quarantine viewing am i . Jimmy yes. Oh. I mean i understand it with yeah, pride and prejudice because its so pretty and lovely, and you sort of want to, you know we all want to live in that land, dont you jimmy yeah you dont want reality yeah. No, no, we definitely dont want reality we want a nice party where everybody is lovely. Yeah, no, thats lovely because its funny because i didnt know that but i have been being recognized an awful lot Walking Around the street, and im not normally and its weird because ive got a mask on as well, so im not quite sure how people are recognizing me jimmy wow. Maybe its because im on these quarantine lists, which is great jimmy it is. I want to talk about your new film misbehavior. Would you mind sticking around for a few more minutes absolutely. Jimmy thank you. More with Keira Knightley after the break. Come on back, everybody. Knowing who we are is hard. Its hard. Eliminate who you are not first, and youre going to find yourself where you need to be. The race is never over. The journey has no port. The adventure never ends, because we are always on the way. [music playing] this is the feeling of total protection now that we protect your identity, mobile phone, auto, home and life youve never been in better hands allstate click or call for a quote today lcome back im talking to Keira Knightley kiera, thank you again for coming on. I want to talk about your new film, misbehavior. This is based on an incredible true story i didnt really know about this can you set up what happened for everyone who might not know yeah, no. I didnt know either so its based around the 1970s miss worlds competition which at the time was the mostviewed program on television. It was huge. Jimmy really yeah. The womens liberation protested and managed to stop the show they got in and they threw flour bombs and they really managed to put feminism on the map at that point. But it also happened to be the year, a first time that a woman of color had won miss world. So i thought it was a really interesting story, because its this collision of feminism and the intersection with racism, and i think it does it in a really interesting way because you go in thinking its going to have one very set point of view and its actually much more of a discussion between sort of multiple points of view. And you come out thinking, okay, that made me think about things in a different way. But obviously done in a very camp way, because its about the miss worlds competition jimmy you play sally alexander, who is a real person did you get to talk to her at all about this yeah, i did sallys extraordinary. Shes now a professor at one of the top universities in london so shes this incredibly intelligent woman. And i thought what was extraordinary was i really didnt know the story. And this is a group of women who really lived by their principles they believed something and they really tried to change the world for the better, you know, and i think so, so talking to her you really get that sense of how important it was to them, but also how much they were willing to sacrifice as far as their protest went. Many of them got arrested and charged and stuff like that. And, you know, i think its really amazing when you meet people who are willing to live by their principles. Jimmy youve been an activist, protesting since you were a kid i think i read somewhere where your soccer team protested yeah, i did we werent allowed to play soccer with the boys i think when i was about 11, i organized a sitin across the soccer field so all of the girls lined up jimmy this is during the godfather phase . Yeah, i think maybe that was influencing it in some way my michael corleone moment was sitting there stopping the football game. So we stopped the match. And actually, you know what we got . The games teacher said, okay, you cant stop from playing, but what would you like . Would you like a Football Team or your own, or a soccer team of your own . So we got a soccer team of our own. Peaceful protest we moved it forward. Jimmy they work, yeah. Jimmy this is a perfect time for this movie to come out, and hopefully it will inspire people to be active and get involved i want to show everyone a clip heres Keira Knightley in misbehavior. Take a look. I was thinking about looking at it from the point of view of women workers. Its a niche. You might want to rethink or at least refocus. Refocus how perhaps broaden the scope a a little you know, i saw you on tv. Sally was on tv. Oh interesting stuff, but dont let it draw you into a a culdesac, academically speaking your subject needs to have a a genuine relevance. Best to steer clear of more minority interests jimmy Keira Knightley. Misbehavior is in select theaters and on demand this friday thank you so much again for being here well be back with Chelsea Clinton. Stick around, everybody. Jimmy our next guest is a New York Times bestselling author, who has written this new book called she persisted in sports american olympians who changed the game which is available today. Here is Chelsea Clinton. Chelsea welcome back to the show thank you jimmy congrats on this book you know, i love these books i read them to my daughters. I love them. Theyre great. I want to talk to you about this congrats on all these. Thank you jimmy since the last time you were on the show i was just talking to Keira Knightley who had a baby as well you had another baby, your third baby im so happy congratulations. Thank you hes so cute and squishy and smiley, and he has no friends because were in covid quarantine im like, some day youre going to have baby friends some day jimmy some day, yeah he doesnt know any different. Jimmy nah, he wont know hes still too tiny. Absolutely have you and your kids been able to spend time with your grandparents who happen to be bill and Hillary Clinton especially this summer, we effectively created a quarantine pod with my parents, which was amazing just for the time that my kids got to spend with they call my parents grandma and poppop gardening together, aidan is obsessed with numbers and so was like super excited to find out that his poppop was like the 42nd president , like there was a number attached to him just made my dad that much cooler in his eyes jimmy oh, yeah so it just like was a a magical time together. Jimmy do they still spoil your kids . Yes, but it was harder with us, because, you know, like the one weekend when we just had charlotte and aidan, the only time mark and i have ever been away for like two nights from our kids and we go to our friends wedding and we come back and our kid had had pizza for breakfast lunch and dinner [ laughter ] and i was looking at my mom, im like, who are you . Jimmy a new yorker i got pizza once a week if i was really good. Three times a day, and she was like, im a grandmother. Jimmy exactly right. I remember my mom giving my sisters kids a pint of ben and jerrys each, or haagen dazs, each a pint with a spoon, and my sisters like, what is wrong with you guys . I know. Jimmy they can have ice cream, but, thats insane. I wasnt even allowed to have sugar cereal as a kid right . Jimmy when youre a grandparent all the bets are off, man and there was no apology. Jimmy then they go, bye, you take care. Theyre all hyped up now, here you go before we talk about your new book, id like to get your thoughts on the passing of Supreme CourtJustice Ruth Bader ginsburg. It was your father who nominated her to the Supreme Court. My father nominated her, and my mother first brought Ruth Bader Ginsburg to my fathers attention and so jimmy i didnt know that she was such a kind of, you know, important, powerful part of our countrys like story and history. You know, one of the things that i most admired about her, jimmy, was just her relentless commitment to, as she said, always be expanding the definition of we in we the people. Because when we the people was first articulated, most of the people in the United States at the time were actually not part of that pronoun and just her dedication as a a lawyer and then a judge and a justice to increase protections for people, you know, regardless of sex, disability, because she knew that would really create opportunities. And i remember, you know, when i was 13 and my dad nominated her, and my mom talking to me about how important she was. I was inspired by that, but admittedly i was also inspired because she was a girl and that she was going to be the second woman on the Supreme Court and that my dad was going to do that it made me really proud of both my parents at that age jimmy did you question that did you go why is there only two women . Yeah, i dont think i learned about Sandra Day Oconnor in school, and i didnt realize until my dad nominated Ruth Bader Ginsburg that she would actually be the second like i just think i thought, well, surely there had been more than one. And there hadnt been, and thankfully now there have been more than two, but we still have a long way to go to get to parity jimmy yeah, yeah, i believe so there are 42 days left until the president ial election, what are your thoughts as were getting closer to the election well, you know, jimmy, were speaking today on such a a ignominious day where we cross 200,000 americans whove died of covid, and i fundamentally believe that most of the people whove died would not have died had we had a more competent and compassionate, empathetic leader at this moment versus president trump, who is none of those things. And you know, so for me the next 42 days are just going to, you know, really be about doing what i can as a citizen to try to help persuade people to register to vote, theres still time to do that in most states, to ensure that theres a plan to vote, whether its to get an absentee ballot, to vote early, to show up and vote on election day and just ensure that people understand that it is the most important election of our lifetime that everything is on the line whether its kind of basic, fundamental human rights, voting rights, civil rights, the environment, gun violence prevention i know we often say, you know, every issue you care about is on the ballot, and maybe that hasnt always been persuasive to people, but i would hope today, with so many thousands of americans whove lost their lives and many millions more whose lives have been disrupted and who are grieving lost loved ones, that people realize elections have consequences and everything is on the ballot. And this election is going to have consequences for anything you care about jimmy what is the easiest way, and who are the groups that were going for when we say go out there and vote . Are they young people . Are they old people . I hope its everybody you know i certainly think just by definition, young people have more at stake in this election, because hopefully theyre going to live in the future for longer theyre going to live with the consequences of the election for longer, but jimmy, weve talked a lot about, over the years of being parents i would hope parents also feel like we have so much at stake in the election because of the future that we want, like, our kids and every kid to have and i think its hard now, theres so much misinformation and kind of meanness and pain, and so i understand why some people might think, ah, its just too much. Im going to opt out but i hope instead people think oh, gosh, i want there to be better information, i want there to be less pain, less suffering, you know we just got to persist, as you said the next 42 days to hopefully get to the other side, certainly, as i hope, not only joe biden and Kamala Harris being elected but democrats being elected up and down the ballot. Jimmy lets talk your new book she persisted in sports. This is the third in the she persisted series. I love sports i love, ive always loved sports loved like watching the olympics as a kid. It was the only time my parents let me watch unlimited television, so i watched every sport. And i loved playing sports as a kid. And i just have always found such like personal inspiration from watching the achievements and the persistence of women on the field, on the court, on a mat, in a pool and those stories have meant so much to me in my life that i wanted to share some of the ones that had meant so much to me either because my grandmother would talk to me about Wilma Rudolph and how inspirational shed been or because i remember watching Kristi Yamaguchi as a kid jimmy yes i love her on the ice and im just, im thankful that she persisted, had really resonated with Young Readers i was like, ah, we have to do sports next. Jimmy every story, you go, i cant imagine what its like to come up and be an olympic superstar and show the world that you can do it one of the best in here is the simone biles, olympic gymnast who is, i mean, shes unbelievable shes greatest gymnast of all time jimmy she is have you ever met she had creative moves that are now named after her. Jimmy have you ever met her . I havent met her ive spoken to her, but i havent met her. Charlotte, my 5yearold, is obsessed with her.
