I wanted to go over it because across the state weve had so many acres burn during this record season in 2020. Fires have burned 3. 6 million acres and if you do the equivalent 5,625 miles. And par weve seen an increase, its climate change. Our temperatures warming up and an increase of 2 degrees has caused more acres to burn and this includes last year. We had a record season just a couple years ago. We know that as we head into fall we get these diablo winds, hot weather and possibly an event this weekend. A high risk above normal fire season. For Northern California this will decrease once the diablo winds go away. And with the hot weather coming this weekend that had be of concern starting on sunday and more on that. Were also following the new details on a fast moving brush fire in belmont. It really threatened homes and is now under investigation this morning. Firefighters had to pour water on flames as they were approaching one enabled. They called in outside help in an effort just to save those homes. While crews worked, Police Officers knocked on 40 doors telling people to evacuate. Youll have to evacuate. We started seeing the flames and then the helicopters started coming and fire trucks and, oh, my goodness, it was hectic. As word of the fire spread people who live along the narrow, winding streets nearby packed up their cars and evacuated causing some traffic jams. The good news here is no homes were destroyed but two were damaged. The California National guard is now working alongside firefighters to try to help control the north complex fire. Theyre trying to mop up some areas to prevent that fire from actually spreading. So far that fire has scorched fearly 300,000 acres. A local rescue team from menlo park is helping fight the wildfire. Theyre not battling the flames. Theyre actually going into burned out homes trying to find anyone reported missing. Sadly 15 people have lost their lives in this fire. So sad there. In the south bay only 2 of people being tested for the coronavirus are coming back positive and just 109 people hospitalized for it. Those are the lowest numbers since late june. Santa clara county is in the red tier of the blueprint and has been for two weeks which means schools can reopen for inperson classes tomorrow though most are staying online. One doctor believes fewer people are going to the hospital because most covid cases are in young people who dont have as severe symptoms and testing is helping. We have done a better job at controlling infections in Skilled Nursing facilities and the vulnerable. Lots of testing there. I think we are doing a great job masking. Statewide the governor says the Positivity Rate is down to about 3 on average. We expect to hear an update later today on what counties are moving towards lighter restrictions. She was shot along with a 24yearold deputy who is recovering from home as well. The two were shot while sitting in their patrol car. The search for anyone connected to the shooting continues.
