You i am at 7th and webster. That is in china town. And it is still a very active scene. The street is closed to any and all traffic. And you can see behind me the f 5 alarm. Right now the fire is contained but theyre on the roof working to find any hot spots and work to see if theres any pockets of fire within the ceiling. I do believe we have a shot from the chopper above. I was told by interim chief that this building takes up nearly twothirds of this block here on webster. She said that at this point they believe that fire started in a dumpster. Now, several businesses primarily restaurants in this building were damaged. Right now she says she does not believe that there were any legal residences into this building. But she said shes proud of her firefighters. They had a difficult time with the visibility and some of the low points in that ceiling. Right now good news that fire is contained. Take a listen to what the interim chief had to say about this particular firefight. Im happy to say that we have no injuries to our fire crews. Everyone is still, as you can see, still on the roof. Weve got crews inside, but we did get it under control at 10 15. Reporter so, back at here live, you see those guys up there talking investigating looking at some of those potential hot spots on the roof. It is important to note she said some of these guys have had a very long day. Many of them were actually deployed to work on the wildfires and today was their first day back. Those guys having a very long day but theyre doing a very good job knocking down that fire. Cierra johnson for nbc bay area news. Much respect to those firefighters out there. Now in the south bay a street sign vigil becomes the crime scene in san jose. And now police are looking for the gunman who shot six people, killing two. Nbc bay areas kris sanchez is joining us live from san jose. And, kris, i understand youve learned about a possible incident, what may have happened before that shooting happened . Reporter yes. Now we know that there was another shooting that police investigated right at the same location where the other gun fire turned deadly. There is now a sixth victim in this. San jose police tell us that when their officers arrived around 10 00 last night they found five gunshot victims, and as officers were investigating they learned of that sixth victim that. Person and three others were treated at the hospital and are expected to survive. But, sadly, two people died at the scene where they were gathered at a streetside memorial remembering a friend. At this point investigators dont know if the shooting is related to that memorial or an active retaliation or related to gun activity or Gang Violence i should say. Only that it was the second shooting police investigated at that same spot last night. Heard five shots go off, then heard a bunch of screaming. There was a couple cars skirting, and then i went and told my wife lets shut the lights off and lock the doors. She said she had already heard some shots earlier. There was a call about an hour and a half prior to the 10 00 call. Were looking into that as well to see if its related to the 10 00 call. There were no victims or any indication of something happening with that 8 30 call. Reporter now all of the victims are adults. All of them men except for one woman. And the core on enter will release the identities after notifying their families. They are asking for the publics help in solving this crime. They do say that if there was a great public risk because there is a gunman outstanding, they would definitely let the Community Know to shelter in place and that at this point that is not the case. In san jose, kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. Good to know, kris, thank you. A live look for you at the Golden Gate Bridge right now. We havent seen a sight like this in some time. You might actually be able to go there, take a deep breath and not feel too bad about it. The extremely poor air quality is at long last improving now. But the bay area still in the midst of the 30th straight spare the air today. Bob redell is in dublin with more on the air quality there. Reporter as we wait for the morning fog to lift here over the hills in dublin, we are experiencing some of the best air quality weve seen in weeks. Right now theres a weather system offshore that is pushing out the bad air. Most areas are experiencing moderate if not good air quality. And it should stay this way. Really its going to depend if we have new wildfires or flareups from the current ones. The San Jose State University has decided to open its campus today. Not the case though up north in seattle. And i bring that up because thats where the giants were supposed to play the mariners. The air quality index in seattle was over 240, which is considered to be very unhealthy. So the giants flew back to san francisco. Theyre going to play their two games against the mariners at oracle park today and tomorrow. And here was the scene last night. You can see a number of people dining outdoors after weeks of bad air quality. And earlier in the day yesterday, a line of drivers waiting to get their cars washed from all that ash. Its not good for the paint, but its definitely not good for our lungs. And its a real reminder of what we are breathing in. I wanted to get it cleaned up. Reporter still today is another spare the air day. Its the 30th in a row. Its another record. The previous record was 14 days in a row. That was during the camp fire back in 2018. Reporting here in dublin, bob redell, nbc bay area news. Bob, thank you. New hew so out east, Hurricane Sally still packing a punch as she blows through the gulf coast. And you can see this reporter right there, look at that. That reporter almost being knocked to the ground by all of the wind and rain. This is in mobile, alabama. That wind was so intense actually keeping her upright. Hurricane sally still causing significant damage around the city including knocking over an 18wheeler. This was on i10 ripping a roof of that flower shop right there you see. So Nbcs Jay Gray is in mobile and he has more on the massive flooding and intense winds. Reporter hey there and thankfully right now a bit of a break from the rain. The winds are still gusting though. And you can see that behind me. You can see its still whipping the trees here and moving the lamp post back and forth a bit. As you move down to mobile bay, what youll notice is that the wind is still pushing the water here as well. White caps on the bay here. And you can see that mist of the water thats still getting pushed around. And these are conditions that are going to continue for a while, not only here but across the region. This storm making landfea gulf shores, alabama, just before sunrise, and bringing with it violent winds, a mounting surf thats really pushed the storm surge inland quite a bit there. And that storm surge added to the rain is going to cause, as the National Weather service has alluded to, historic flooding in some of the lowlying areas. Right next door in orange beach, they saw more of the same with the driving rain there. Weve got flooding in several areas that. Waters not going to go away any time soon. This storm has made landfall. Its just not real anxious to move away, that lingering slow progression is going to add to what are already difficult conditions here. Powerlines down across the region. We know close to half a million without power. And again this is something the areas going to have to deal with for the next several days. Im jay gray. Back to. Thanks, jay. We want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. So where is the storm right now, and how much longer is it going to affect the People Living in those areas . Its still in the same place it was earlier this morning. It has not moved. And some of those spots have gotten over 24 inches of rain. Just unbelievable. Because this storm is moving so slowly. And so thats what were expecting the rest of today. The forward speed of the storm only at 5 miles per hour. And then some of those wind gusts are at up to 70 miles per hour. So we are going to continue to see this impact parts of alabama and georgia. Then moving towards South Carolina over the next few days. Once again, the very slow nature is whats causing a lot of problems. And then we look to see what else is going on out there. We have hurricane teddy that is now moving over parts of the caribbean. That may be curving up toward bermuda over the next few days. Kari, thank you. You know what . Its a big day for bay area startups as not just one but two Companies Based here go public. Plus, we are hearing from the family of Breonna Taylor following a big settlement with the city of louisville. Why they say their fight is not over yet. And these actresses are sitting down with Kelly Clarkson today. Lets just say they have some really interesting ideas to spice up season 2 of the talk show. Were going to talk about that of course when you watch the Kelly Clarkson show that is coming up at 3 00. Welcome back to you. We are now hearing from the Family Dollar settlement with the city of louisville. Now this comes more than six months after taylor was shot and killed by police in her own home. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez has more on why her family says their fights not over yet. [ chanting ] reporter this morning the family of Breonna Taylor says the 12 million civil settlement is only a start. I dont know that you can put a dollar amount on her life. She was so much more than that. Reporter the city of louisville did not admit any wrongdoing by police. But the settlement does include several reforms such as changes to the approval process for search warrants, the hiring of social workers to go out on Mental Health calls, and incentives for officers to live and volunteer in the community. My administration is not waiting to move ahead to prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again. Does the union believe that the civil settlement is premature . In our opinion, yes. I think it would be logical to wait for an investigation to be completed and before a decision like that is made. Reporter it all comes more than six months after a botched raid at taylors apartment. Police were executing a search warrant looking for drugs. Officers said they announced themselves. Taylors boyfriend, who was also inside, disputes that. He says he feared an intruder was breaking in and fired his licensed weapon wounding an officer. Police returned fire killing taylor. Breonna taylor was in her apartment who had every right to sleep in peace and not have the Police Execute a dangerous i believe unconstitutional and unjustifiable noknock warrant on yet another black citizen in america. Reporter her family says no drugs were found in the apartment and theyre now calling for at least seconddegree manslaughter charges against the officers. Not only did they cause the death of someone else. They put other individuals at risk. Reporter one of the officers there that night has been fired. His attorney declined to comment. The other two are on leave. How important are charges for these officers . Its very important. Its the most important part of this. I understand that theyre police officers, but that doesnt make you above the law. That was Gabe Gutierrez reporting. So more businesses are reopening today in the bay area amid the pandemic. This is the states tier right here, the reopening tiers. The bay area stuck in two of those tiers, the purple and red. The purple which is the most restrictive orders and the red which allows several businesses to reopen inside. Now despite being in the purple tier, Contra Costa County is allowing more personal care, business, casino, and Film Productions to reopen outdoors. Not only a place reopening, in county, it just moved into the purple from the purple to the red. So businesses like nail salons, places of worship, and movie theaters, they can now reopen indoors for services. Now some people say that this news is a bit of a surprise for them. I didnt even know we were allowed to eat inside today. So it was a really pleasant surprise. And i think its a really great way to help support Small Businesses and kind of get back to things being back to normal, i guess. Now in a new tier, marin county must remain there for at least 21 days. Leaders in the big ten conference are approving a plan to resume football in a matter of weeks. Actually get outside and enjoy because the air qualitys getting a lot better. Its been so good to see the air quality improving. And many people in the south bay as well as the peninsula had some light rain this morning, some misting that also was helping to clear out the air. Were still left with some clouds in the south bay, but it is alsoe take a look at this live view with all of this sunshine it. Just looks so amazing, especially when you think back to a week ago when we were talking about how horrible the air quality was. So now that we are seeing all of these green sensors, its showing that we are looking at some clean air. Now its finally safe to go out and open up your windows, go out for a long walk, as well as enjoy more time outside. So as we go through this forecast, we will continue to see improved air quality at least for the next couple of days. So thats some really good news there. As we look at our temperatures right now, its starting to warm up just a little bit with some upper 60s in the south bay. Were at 71 in oakland and 70 in livermore. Concord at 76. When you compare this to yesterday at this time, we are seeing those temperatures a few degrees warmer up to about 7 degrees difference from Half Moon Bay up to the north bay. Going into this afternoon, expect it to be a nice one. But it will be a little bit warmer than weve had recently. And this will actually be the warmest day of the week because some cooler air is coming our way. As we look at morgan hillay, expect a high of 85 degrees. 77 will be the high in oakland. San francisco will be in the upper 60s today. And then as we go into the forecast, weve also been keeping a close eye on the wind speeds and direction. So with the southerly wind picking up today, its still going to be quite breezy into the evening. Once again thats helping to bring in some cleaner air, especially when we see westerly winds. Thats coming in off of the ocean, and thats going to help improve our air quality. Well get more of a westerly wind as this storm system passes just to the north of us as it continues to move away. Were still looking at a strong wind but also some cooler temperatures. This is also going to be very beneficial for the pacific northwest. Expect it to bring in some rain. Of course we know our neighbors to the north are also dealing with numerous wildfires. So with some rain in the forecast, thats definitely some great news for them as well. Take a look at our temperatures for the inland areas. Well reach into the upper 80s today. But then come down to the upper 70s by the end of the week, heating up again by sunday into early next week.
