The race to come up with a vaccine for covid is back on for astrazeneca, but not here in the united states. In fact, regulators are trying to figure out if they should follow in the footsteps and allow the trials to start again. They were halted last week across the globe because a man in the trials developed spinal inflammation. That man is doing better, and the uk has started its trials again, but here in the united states, its about having the right amount of accurate data before they move forward. Now, ucsf is one of the sites where those Clinical Trials were happening here in the united states. Theyre not resuming for right now. The u. S. Safety board wants to see the complete data before resuming trials. The astrazeneca vaccine is one of seven currently in the running to be ready for the general population sometime next year. The serious side effects of the inflammation really echoes the fear of a lot of people about being the first to line up for the first vaccine. I asked dr. Peter haan if we should be worried about being vaccinated. Id be the first to line up, frankly, go get that. Were in the mid of a pandemic. I would be willing to take it myself. Theres talk of a vaccine before the election. Is that realistic . Definitely not by november 3rd, november 1st, or the end of october. Its going to be a while before we can see the results of a vaccine. Im thinking of spring or summer of 2021. And dr. Chinhong says when that vaccine is rolled out, cdc guidelines says lit go to essential workers like dr. Chinhong who takes care of patients, military because theyre crowded together, and those with predispositions to heart and lung disease. Then it will make its way to adults or children with preexisting conditions. Thats why dr. Chinhong says we have to remain vigilant and continue with the three ws sh which is wearing a mask, wash your hands, and watch your distance with people. Thats until next summer. We get a lot of mixed messages. Dr. Chinhong and others have kept that consistent timeline thats next summer as a bestcase scenario. I know. Not what you want to hear, but its a good reality. This is a heavy time for so many of us, the pandemic, racial injustice, wildfires, and unhealthy air. Emotional for adults as well, what about the children . How much damage is this doing to them. We appreciate your good nerm. Youre a pediatrician. Will our kids feel the impact with all thats going on here . Thes season sli a l there lot of stress, but we can buffer that. The way we do that is, numb were one, selfcare. Thats not selfish. The number one ingredient for a healthy child is a healthy parent or care gifter and making sure that they are able to connect with their friends, making sure that they do have time to play, even if they cant go outside. You know, those buffering caregiving relationships really can make the difference between stresses that are tolerable. Doctor, you have four kids. Sometimes you get exhausted. I have two. What do you do . Try not to stress too much about the dings in the wall. Thats whats going on at my house. I would say for our kids, really our being there for them is so important. It really does make such a huge difference. You know, trying to find those activities that they can do inside. You know, for my littlest one, my 4yearold, 8yearold, legos has been what its been all about. Keep in mind that we will be able to get back out there soon. So making meaning of this, recognizing that this is another reason why its so important for all of us to recognize that climate change, right, is not not only affects our environmental but affects our health and its something that each of us can do something about putting forth solutions. Dr. Burke harris, your background is fascinating talking about good stress and bad stress. Is there such a thing as good stress for them to learn from here . Yeah. Well, stress helps us grow. Thats one of the critical things. Theres a lot of opportunity here for us to, number one, recognize our sources of resilience. It was so nice to breathe today. Smoke could come back later this week . Theres always that possibility if we dont get some higher containment because the winds are not going to stay in this same fashion for days on end. So i think overall most importantly, tonight through tomorrow, thursday and friday, we should be under this better air quality, and what a relief that is as weve all been saying. As you notice yourself, weve had 29 consecutive days of spare the air alerts. Thats the longest stretch ever. When you take a look, it was a recordsetting air with the spread the air alerts with most of the pollution. Goodbye bad air quality. Were seeing those changes weve been talking about now for over a week. So relieved this system has really panned out just as thought, and what we had been seeing on the weather charts its right offshore. Theres rainfall with it. The most important thing is the wind, getting the westerly east flow across california. I think were locked in for this better air quality tonight through fridays forecast, and also what about that rain chance . Look at all the fires happening up into oregon, half inch in portland and central areas of oregon. Thats going to be marked relief for the wildfires there. For euro rekarks total numbers are down, and for San Francisco, 0. 07 . Air quality, moderate through the next 12 hours with good levls at the coastline. As we look ahead into wednesday and thursday, im keeping with a similar forecast, and thats based on current fire behavior. If we see things change up, or flareup, that could cause air quality problems. Tomorrow morning when you look up, its not going to be smoke but cloud, even drizzle right here at the coastline. So some of prefrening air. Trivalley at 60. In San Francisco, thats where well have the best chance of not only fog but a few areas of spotty drizzle. Once we hit the afternoon, temperatures will rebound as we get some sun. 88, livermore, 86. San francisco holds in the 60s. And for the inland valleys. 77 by friday as that storm system finally moves over to northern california. You can see by sunday. Thats what could bring back some smoke. If we could get higher fire containment, we wouldnt have a problem. Well keep an eye on that, everybody else, keep an eye on that. Were going to be dancing in the streets. Thanks, jeff.
